Colorado Avalanche: Media Notes
ROAD WARRIORS The Avs suffered their first road defeat of the season on Tuesday night in Carolina. The Avs began the year a league-best 6-0 awayfrom home, matching their longest road winning streak to begin a season in franchise history (also 2011-12). That 6-0 run fell one shyof equaling the franchise's longest road winning streak at any point of a season. The record is seven straight from Jan. 10 to Feb. 7,1999. Colorado actually won seven straight road outings dating back to the end of the 2012-13 campaign, which matched the overallfranchise record for consecutive road victories (including multiple seasons). The Avs and Blues (15-for-15) are the NHL's only perfect PK teams on the road. Overall, the Avalanche's penalty killing ranks among the NHL's top five at 88.7%(47/53). The Avs had been the No. 1 ranked PK unit for two weeks from Oct. 22 to Nov. 5. NET EFFECT Colorado leads all NHL teams in save percentage (.944), while ranking second in goals-against average (1.76), goals allowed (30) andgoal differential (+25). The Avs have held the opposition to two goals or less in 15 of their 17 games. The Avs began the season byholding their opponents to one goal or less in each of their first five games, becoming the first team in NHL history to begin a seasonwith five straight wins while allowing no more than one goal in each game. JIGGY STARTING STRONG Jean-Sebastien Giguere has won each of his first five starts, matching the longest winning streak to begin a season in franchisehistory. Giguere, who has allowed just five goals total in those five games, is now one shy of tying his career-long winning streak of sixgames done twice before (last: Oct. 21 - Nov. 4, 2008). Giguere is tied for first in the NHL in shutouts (2) and would lead all netmindersin goals-against average (1.00) and save percentage (.970) if he had enough games to qualify. All-time, Jiggy ranks 45th in NHLhistory in both wins (256) and appearances (580). He is tied with Tom Barrasso and Sean Burke for 37th place on the NHL’s all-timeshutout list (38). Among active netminders, Giguere is sixth in games, seventh in shutouts and ninth in wins. LONGEST WIN STREAK TO BEGIN A SEASON, FRANCHISE HISTORY 5 J.S. He finished 7-1-0 in October, which was the highest winning percentage (.875) by an Avalanche/Nordiques goalie in the month ofOctober. The previous mark was .800 by Patrick Roy in October of 2000 (7-1-2). Varlamov won his first five starts this year, matchingthe franchise record for the longest winning streak to begin a season. Varly allowed exactly one goal in each of his first four starts, becoming the first goaltender in Avalanche/Nordiques history to accomplish that feat. RECORD START BEHIND THE BENCH Patrick Roy has guided Colorado to a 14-3-0 start, the club’s best record through 17 games in franchise history. Roy was the firstcoach in NHL history to win 14 of his first 16 career games and one of only two coaches in league history to win 12 of his first 13 (MarcCrawford 1994-95). Roy led the Avs to a 6-0-0 mark in his first six games at the helm, tying the NHL record for consecutive wins by ahead coach to begin his career (Mario Tremblay 1995-96 Canadiens).
