FAST FACTS

Faulk an All-Star?: Justin Faulk recorded two assists during Carolina’s 5-2 victory over Buffalo on Thursday. It was his sixth multi-

point game of the season. Faulk ranks in the top 20 among NHL defensemen in goals (T-14th, 7), points (T-17th, 24), game-winning

goals (T-3rd, 3), power-play goals (T-11th, 3), power-play points (T-16th, 9), shorthanded goals (1st, 2), shorthanded points (T-1st, 2)

and shots (T-9th, 109). The 22-year old blueliner is the third youngest player in the top 20 for points. Only Boston’s Dougie Hamilton

at 21 (23 pts.) and Florida’s Aaron Ekblad at 18 (23 pts.) are younger. Faulk, who skated in two games for the U.S. national team at

the 2014 Olympics, is looking to play in his first NHL All-Star Game.

Mr. 300: Hurricanes captain Eric Staal scored his fifth goal in the last six games in the second period of Thursday’s win over Buffalo.

Staal netted his 300th NHL/Hurricanes goal at Nashville on Tuesday. He is one of just four players drafted from 2001-2014 who have

scored 300 career goals (Kovalchuk, Nash and Ovechkin). Staal ranks first in games played (805), points (713), goals (301), assists

(412), hat tricks (13), shorthanded goals (16) and power-play goals (102) for the Carolina franchise since relocation.

Killing Them Off: Carolina went 4-for-4 on the penalty kill in Thursday’s 5-2 victory against the Sabres. The Hurricanes rank fifth in

the NHL in penalty-kill percentage at 86.6 percent. During the last nine games Carolina has not allowed a power-play goal and has

killed 26 penalties during that stretch. The Hurricanes have not finished in the top ten in penalty-kill percentage since they finished

seventh in 2006-07 (84.6%).

Winning January: The Hurricanes topped Buffalo 5-2 at PNC Arena on Thursday to climb to 3-1-0 in January. Last season Carolina

posted a 10-4-0 record in the month of January, their second-best January mark and tied for third-best month in franchise history.

The Hurricanes’ 10-win month was their first since March 2009.

Take It Away Now: Carolina’s 359 takeaways this season rank third in the NHL. Justin Faulk has recorded 30 takeaways, tied for

second among NHL defensemen. Andrej Sekera ranks sixth among NHL defensemen with 28. Carolina led the NHL in 2013-14 with

785 takeaways, 120 more than the team with the second-most (NY Islanders – 665). The Hurricanes have finished in the top five in

the league in takeaways in three of the last four seasons. They were fifth in the NHL in 2010-11 and finished second in 2012-13,

behind only the eventual Stanley Cup-champion Chicago Blackhawks.

Success In The Circle: The Hurricanes rank seventh in the NHL with a 51.9 faceoff win percentage. Jay McClement is 14th in the

league winning 55.9 percent of his faceoffs. Carolina finished the 2013-14 season fourth in faceoff win percentage at 52.6 percent,

marking the first time they finished a season in the top five of the league since the 2006-07 campaign (4th, 52.3%).

Ward Between The Pipes: Cam Ward stopped 18 of the 20 shots he faced in Carolina’s 5-2 win against Buffalo on Thursday. In 25

starts spanning back to Nov. 1 Ward has posted a 2.09 goals-against average and .925 save percentage. Prorated to the season,

those numbers would rank Ward fifth in goals-against average and eighth in save percentage among NHL leaders.  HURRICANES vs. BLUES SERIES NOTES-- Carolina trails all-time, 27-38-6-1 (72), including 16-18-2 (36) at home and 11-20-4-1 (36) in St. Louis.-- The clubs will meet twice in the 2014-15 season: at STL: Jan. 10; at CAR: Jan. 30.-- The teams split their two regular season meeting in 2013-14: 1-1-0.-- The Hurricanes have won seven of the last 11 games between the teams, including five of the last six at PNC Arena.-- Carolina has earned at least one point in five of the last seven meetings between the teams in St. Louis.-- Five of the last eight meetings have been decided by one goal.-- 14 of the last 15 games between the teams have been decided by two goals or fewer (one tie).-- Carolina and St. Louis have combined to score three goals or fewer in six of the last 11 meetings.-- Cam Ward is 5-1-1 with a 1.54 GAA and two shutouts in seven career games against the Blues.
