From Fr. Mark’s Desk: Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is bap zed will be saved.” In Acts of the Apostles, there is an account of Paul and Silas praying and singing as they are imprisoned for proclaiming Christ. “Suddenly there was an earthquake…and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened. When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, since he supposed that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted in a loud voice, ‘Do not harm yourself, for we are all here’.” This passage is significant in that what contained Paul and Silas in the prison, wasn’t the chains and bars of the prison but their faith, that in preaching and living the Gospel they would be led home. Many people live their life in a prison of sorts, a life they cannot ‘control’. Yet, faith in God provides a freedom in the midst of imprisonment. The Ascension of Jesus reminds us that neither the cross, the grave, or human me/space can contain Jesus. Where he is going, we follow. In other words, our lives are not contained by our space/ me/situa on/suffering; but are freed in the eternal life of Jesus, the eternal love of the Father, and the eternal gi of the Holy Spirit. This weekend we honor all Mothers living and deceased. We give thanks!! I thought the following passage from Psalm 5, was a good prayer/reflec on for our Mothers. “Then all who take refuge in you will be glad and forever shout for joy. Protect them that you may be the joy of those who love your name. For you, Lord, bless the just; you surround them with favor like a shield.” One of the great blessings that happened to me five years ago, when I arrived at St. Linus was the opportunity to meet a young man from the parish, Ryan McMillin. Ryan was studying at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary discerning the possibility of priesthood. In the past five years, in addi on to forming a friendship with him, I have come to see the Holy Spirit at work in his life. I firmly believe his gi s will benefit the Church greatly. It is with great happiness that I can formally announce Ryan’s ordina on to the Diaconate, which will occur Saturday May 12th, 2018. Ryan intends to be ordained a priest in May of 2019 with his First Mass being here at St. Linus. Please keep Ryan in your thoughts and prayers as he con nues to serve the Church. Have a great week!! Fr. Mark Walter
