From Fr. Mark’s Desk: Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time: “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” During the Christmas season, we are given epiphany accounts of the Divinity of Jesus as he dwells among His people. The three magi, Simeon and Anna, the Wedding at Cana, the Bap sm of Jesus and others are encounters of the faithful with Jesus the Messiah. These mo-ments of epiphany are the cause of great rejoicing. In this weekend’s gospel, we see a differ-ent type of epiphany. The ability of those with an unclean spirit to recognize Jesus as divine is an epiphany, but this me from the sinner. The unclean spirit recognizes what is directly op-posite of their spirit. The bad recognizes the good and is fearful, because the good is more powerful than the bad. “Have you come to destroy us?” is a legi mate ques on in the pres-ence of the eternal. But it is not destruc on that Jesus seeks, but conversion. “Quiet! Come out of him” are the words that Jesus will use to restore the man to grace, free of sin. “Go and sin no more” would be the words Jesus uses later. Sin will a empt to hide from God but Jesus will go a er it and forgive it. The disciples, fishers of men, will be empowered to do the same. The theme of this weekend is to recognize our own sin, acknowledge it before God, and allow God to renew our spirit. “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts!” ~So, last weekend it was announced that Our Lady of the Ridge and St. Linus will unite as one parish with two worship sites (churches). The next decision of the Cardinal will be the ap-pointment of one pastor for the combined parish. Fr. Wayne, the current pastor of Our Lady of the Ridge, and I step aside so that a decision can be reached regarding what is best for the new parish. In this bulle n and on the parish website, there is a form to complete which re-quires your input. Please complete the form and return as directed. Our office can forward it, if that is easier for you. Thank you for your coopera on during this challenging and renewing

me. ~ Finally, the Annual Catholic Appeal is upon us. As you know, this appeal benefits many of the ministries of the Archdiocese including parishes of great need, evangeliza on, human dig-nity, priest educa on and much more. Of course, the pandemic has made this need greater. Your support is welcomed and appreciated. Have a great week! Fr. Mark Walter

The St. Vincent de Paul Society

LOVE IN OUR WORK In the Gospel today, we read that because Jesus spoke with authority his reputation spread through-out the surrounding region of Galilee. As his disci-ples, we can also speak with authority when we put our faith into actions by helping the poor and suffer-ing. Have you considered answering the call to serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?

Let us follow the command of Jesus Christ: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

—Bl. Bernard Lichtenberg

PLEASE NOTE: We are always looking for new members or volunteers. Leave your name and number

at the rectory.

Because of COVID-19 we have cancelled our Bundle Weekends.

Clothes can still be dropped off at the boxes at St. Gerald Parish

and the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store at 7010 W. 159th St., Orland Park

MORNING OFFERING O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I

offer You my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart,

in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, in reparation for my sins, for the intentions of all my relatives and friends, and in

particular for the intentions of Pope Francis:

FEBRUARY

Violence Against Women: We pray for women who are victims of violence, that they may be pro-tected by society and have their sufferings consid-ered and heeded.

We provide religious instruc-tion from 1st grade through 8th grade. Go to website for further information. Homework will be sent by

email for February classes. Schedule will be on the website. Come and encounter Jesus in Religious Education! For further information, please call the RE office at 708.636.4373.

The Women’s Center… In our nation approximately 1 million abortions are performed each year. The aborted babies aren’t the only victims. Their mothers, who in many cases were pressured into the abortion, are also victims. Sooner or later, they experience horrible grief and depression. At the Women’s Centers we try to ena-ble women struggling with problem pregnancies to give birth and save them from grieving later. SEEKING FAMILY ROOM DONATIONS We need diapers in sizes 4, 5, and 6; pull-ups in siz-es 4, 5, 6; boys and girls sleepers sizes 9 to 12 months; receiving blankets, new pacifier s, baby wipes, baby shampoo, and lotion: For more information, please call 773-794-1313.

MORE Care more than others think necessary. Trust more than others think wise. Serve more than others think practical. —Anonymous

Stewardship… Stewardship involves a willingness to give from the very core of who we are and what we have from sub-stance rather that abundance. “None of those who cry out ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of God, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21) Jesus made it clear that being stewards of our time, talent and treasure is part of the will of the Father. Stewardship of treasure asks only a percentage of income. Many people find that when they trust God and return a certain percentage of their income to the Church and other charities, they can live adequately on the rest of their income. “Always seek to do good to one another and to all.” (1 Thessalonians 5:14)

FALSE PROPHETS, TRUE PROPHETS In Deuteronomy today we hear that God’s very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God’s mouth. In Mark’s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God’s own voice, the Holy One of God. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. But in today’s Gospel we learn that Jesus’ fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn’t an authority because he was popular or famous. We also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that any-one can quote scripture, even against God’s purposes. And today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of reli-gious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God’s very words filling our mouths. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
