ADVISORY BUREAU FOR HIGHER STUDIES

The advisory Bureau for higher studies (ABHS) was inaugurated in the year 1999.

Ever since its inception, it is functioning as a separate wing with the prime notion to serve the

student community for getting higher studies admission in India and abroad. The main

objective of ABHS is to enable the students to prepare for the tests like GRE, TOEFL,

GMAT, IELTS, GATE, CAT etc. ABHS has the latest information, books and CD’s

regarding GRE, TOEFL, GMAT, IELTS, GATE and CAT. From this year onwards the

GRE and TOEFL training classes have been commenced in the campus.

ABHS is also organizing guest lectures and seminars to equip the students for pursing higher

studies .Various Workshops and seminars are handled by resource persons from IDP, USIEF,

Cambridge University, British Council and other higher studies agencies. Apart from this, the

students are exposed to the first-hand information from Associate Director, Deans,

Department heads and faculty members from many educational institutes like SUNY,

Arkansa State University, Swinburne University, University of Sussex, Illinois Institute of

Technology, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Denver, Pace University and

Southern Illinois University. The Academicians have visited our campus and also briefed the

students about the application process, scholarships and requirements in their respective

universities.

Our students have got admission into various top ranking universities in different

countries like USA, Australia, UK, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, Sweden and Singapore.

To name a few, University of Texas, Stanford university, NJIT, Carnegie Mellon university,

University of Massachusetts, Arizona State University, North Carolina state University,

Illinois Institute of technology, University of Pennsylvania, Concordia University, Leeds

university, Florida institute of technology, University of Birmingham, NUS, NTU, University

of West Virginia, MRIT, University of MTU, McGill University etc. The number of students

NGO ACTIVITIES

The current day society is plagued by poverty to an extent that it has numbed the lives of the orphaned and aged poor. Bereft of support systems,

they are left in abject misery. It is to their aid that the St. Joseph's college have meticulously planned and executed Non–governmental organizational activities, for the past one year. These NGO activities, a brain child of our beloved Managing Director are organized by young and emerging engineers of our college to make a difference in the lives of the marginalized and impoverished. The main aim of these activities is to

Promote the interest of the poor, Protect the environment Provide the basic social services, To relieve suffering & Undertake community development

These activities are funded from the management to work for social change so that we create a society in which our institutions and organizations are equitable and just and all people are safe, adequately fed, adequately housed, well educated, able to work at safe, decent jobs, and able to participate in the decisions that affect their lives.NGO activities were introduced in the college on the premise that students would evince academic gains from their volunteering efforts. BEST OUT GOING STUDENT AWARD Success is not the destination that we reach. Success is the quality of our journey. The

quality of the journey depends upon the goals we set the mentor we choose. The quality of

the mentor lies in appreciating even the smallest effort as appreciation is the only tool which

enables us to build the impossible. Mankind’s greatest achievements have come about by

constant encouragement. Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future if our efforts

are recognized. All we need to do is to appreciate and encourage the young minds as most

achievers are people who have made a strong and deep dedication to pursue a particular goal.

St. Joseph’s recognizes this dedication by awarding the student with “The best Outgoing

Student Award”. The most prestigious and most awaited award ceremony of the year “The

best Outgoing Student Award” for the year was held on the Achivers Day on 11th

of April

2015.

The students from various departments were nominated based upon various traits,

achievements or accomplishments

COMMUNICATION SKILL ENHANCEMENT

PROGRAM Centre for Training and Placement of St Joseph’s is largely responsible

and committed towards the identification and catering to the need of

training of students so that they are able to develop a good personality; and

assist them to find right job and help them place in right companies before

they pass out. We realize that in order to convert a raw student in to

employable graduate, several behavioral attributes need to be addressed in

addition to the development of technical skills. Some of the behavioral

attributes are good communication skills, developing positive attitude

towards work, and understanding of moral and ethical values.

Every academic year, our college has taken an initiative to improve the

communication skill of the students by organizing 48 hrs Communication

skill enhancement program. The aim of this program is to empower our

students to take up the future campus recruitment with confidence. All the

first year students are evaluated for communication skill by the expert

committee. Based on the evaluation students are categorized into three

levels andstudents are given appropriate training. This communication

enhancement program is conducted by corporate trainers from Strides,

Winspire, Vistamind etc.

PLUG OUT

In this edition of Plug out we have an article on current status of

FRIENDSHIP, an interview of an eminent personality by student editors,

Intangible inspirations and inspirations to become an entrepreneur.

FRIENDSHIP

By VIVEKANAND G III Yr E.E.E . Hello guys. I would like

to ask a question to all of

you...Could anyone be

there without having

even a single friend?? It

is impossible. Am I

right? So I wish to take this

precious opportunity to

depict about friendship and

how vital it is in each and

everyone’s life.

. To start with I have run

into many people who

could not be nice at times

and those who could be

really mean sometimes .

What is there being rude or

being mean? Is it really

that hard to trust the ones

you have talked over a long

time or you could trust

with full belief??

. I go through it every

moment in my life.

. For what I have said

above I am not judging

anyone but I'm just telling

you what I go through in

my life.

. And I try my best not to

let these temporary

hindrances to get me down

but it is so frustrating when

you try talking to a friend

you have never even talked

for over a month or a long

time and they end up

leaving without even

giving an ear for what you

have to say.

. I mean, I know and I

understand that we all have

lives to think about? Would

it really be so much harm

as to do that??...

. One should also not forget

that friendship is about

having wonderful moments

with your friends and

sticking to them no matter

what you do or what goes

on around you.

. And every day I mingle

with each and every

person who is in my friend

circle. I'm always excited

to see even their usernames

on the Instant Message or

whenever I get ready to

talk to them.

. At times I don't get any

replies, and there are other

times when they just end

up leaving after I try saying

hello. I understand if

everyone is busy, but why

this? Why leaving as

soon as someone else is

trying to talk to you?

. Again I am not blaming

anyone for this but it just

makes me feel bad when

people do that because it's

a sign to me and a sign

that everyone thinks I am

annoying or disturbing.

. Speaking of annoyance,

you may think that just

because I care about

friends makes me look

annoying. You know what?

Fine it does. But I have

respect for them.

. I show kindness, respect,

and all the love in the

world for them. I show

them that they mean the

world to me. I make them

gifts, I provide them

comfort, and I provide

them with answers

Page 58: St. JOSEPHS OLLEGE OF ENGINEERING PLUG INstjosephs.ac.in/departmentsite/eee/eee/MAG/MAG15.pdf2 Department of Electrical and Electronics St. JOSEPHS OLLEGE OF ENGINEERING PLUG IN

St. JOSEPH’S COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING PLUG IN

. They love coming to me,

so why can't most of you

be the same?

. I did not write this article

for any arguments or

gossip. The only reason

why I made this article is to

give you guys a lesson in

what happens when people

sometimes change their

perspective or views about

you.

. And even thoughts about

you but what you get in

return is a stab in the back

instead of a thanking you

or a reason why they end

up breaking your heart.

Friendships can increase or decrease through these Circles.

. I hope that when you

read this article you will

think about what

friendship means to you

and to everyone else. My

friendship means so much

to me that I will do

anything to keep my true

best friends besides me.

. And I will take the

liberty to be anyone's

friend and talk to them

and have fun or even get

to know them better. If

you ever feel down or

need a good person to talk

to, come to me or go to

anyone you may know

who trusts you the best

and who always knows

what to say in your hard

times.

. But what I would like to

say be careful in building

your friends circle. And

friendship is not an easy

relationship to maintain.

So I have shared with you

what friendship and

friends mean to me, my

perspective about

friendship, importance I

have given to it. And the

endless joy it has given

me and it still gives. I

conclude by saying “If

you have trustworthy

friends then you have

everything

Social

Trustable

Interview with Dr. Arogyaswami J. Paulraj

The student editors of

PLUGIN magazine had a

privilege to interview of

Dr. Arogyaswami J.

Paulraj Professor Emeritus

at the Dept. of Electrical

Engineering, Stanford

University. The excerpts of

the interview along with his

brief introduction and

achievements are

summarized here.

He was born in Pollachi

near Coimbatore, India. He

joined the Indian Navy at

age 15 through the

National Defence

Academy, Kharakvalsa and

served the Navy for 30

years. He received his

bachelor’s degree in

Electrical Engineering

from the Naval College of

Engineering, Lonavala,

India, and his doctorate in

Electrical Engineering

from the Indian Institute of

Technology, New Delhi.

Prof. Paulraj is the winner

of the prestigious 2014

Marconi Society Prize - the

‘Nobel’ prize of the

Information tech world.

Due to some quirk in the

Nobel rules, Nobel’s are

not awarded to engineers.

Paulraj joins a very select

group of top IT pioneers

such as TIM BERNERS-

LEE (World Wide Web),

VINT CERF (Internet),

LARRY PAGE (Google

Search), MARTY

HELLMAN (Public Key

Cryptography) AND

MARTIN COOPER (Cell

Phone). We are indeed

proud to have an Indian

born scientist to be so

honored.

N R Narayana Murthy,

executive chairman of

Infosys, said, in a release

by Marconi Society,

"Paulraj's brilliance and

perseverance have

revolutionized wireless

technology bringing a

lasting benefit to mankind."

Before he migrated to the

US in the early 1990s, he

was well known for

pioneering the

development of sonars for

the navy. Paulraj is the

founding director of

laboratories Centre for

Artificial Intelligence and

Robotics, Centre for

Development of Advanced

Computing, Bangalore, and

the Central Research Labs

of Bharat Electronics.

After moving to Stanford

University, he built the

world's leading research

group in MIMO, and

founded two companies in

the Silicon Valley to

develop MIMO. In today’s

wireless world, faster data

transfers and multimedia

downloads is taken for

granted - it is indeed thanks

to a new technology called

MIMO (Multiple

Input/Multiple Output).

And for that, we have to

thank Prof. Paulraj who

brought this revolutionary

idea to the world of

communications.

Ms. Josephine (J) student

editor interviewed Prof -

Arogyaswami Paulraj (AP)

via email and the excerpts

are given below:

J:Can you explain

MIMO ?.

AP: MIMO (Multiple Input,

Multiple Output) antenna

technology is perhaps the

most important

breakthrough in wireless in

recent decades. MIMO

effectively multiplies the

frequency spectrum, an

extremely limited resource.

A 4x4 antenna MIMO radio

commonly used today

quadruples the amount of

allocated radio spectrum;

and this leverage will reach

10s if not 100s of times in a

few years. MIMO is now an

essential element in all new

wireless systems such as

WiFi and LTE (4G) cellular.

MIMO works by creating

Page 60: St. JOSEPHS OLLEGE OF ENGINEERING PLUG INstjosephs.ac.in/departmentsite/eee/eee/MAG/MAG15.pdf2 Department of Electrical and Electronics St. JOSEPHS OLLEGE OF ENGINEERING PLUG IN

St. JOSEPH’S COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING PLUG IN

parallel channels from the

transmitter to the receiver.

This also requires

appropriate coding at the

transmitter and decoding at

the receiver.

J: What is the impact

of MIMO today?

AP: Many Billions of

MIMO enabled wireless

devices are already in use.

Every smart phone or iPad

uses it. More than a 2.8

Billion chips with MIMO

were sold globally in 2014.

MIMO will have even

bigger role in future

systems like 5G.

J: Why did you face

early scepticism on

MIMO ?

AP: This was indeed

natural. Many ideas get

proposed claiming huge

break trough’s and most of

them are indeed wrong, so

kepticism is needed. Also,

perhaps the combination of

my own newness in the

wireless field in US and the

huge gains I was claiming

made it harder to convince

people.

Also, I did not provide a

sound mathematical proofs

since I was trying to arrive

at a most general theory -

this has still not been done

today, 20 years later! If I

had tackled proofs of

narrower problems in

MIMO theory, I would

have been successful and

made things easier for me

and others!

J: Although India is

the fastest growing

telecom services

market, we still

depend on imports

totally. How can we

change this?

AP: This is indeed the

subject I sometimes talk

about in India. This is too

big and too important a

subject to discuss properly

over the telephone. But

global leadership of IT

technology like computing

and communications is

very difficult to achieve

and requires huge

investments, emphasis on

excellence, nurturing of top

talent, and consistent and

long term policy focus. We

need to radically rethink of

how we can succeed in this

goal.

J: Any advice to

young engineering

students (and their

parents)?

AP: The opportunities for

success in engineering are

limitless. With so many

new technologies such as

biology, robotics,

information, nano and

energy making rapid

progress, many doors are

opening for innovative

thinkers, risk takers and of

course, you need drive and

persistence. Engineering is

a great career, particularly

for people who think

outside the box. Apart from

the usual rewards of impact

and recognition,

engineering careers can

also offer good financial

rewards.

J: On behalf of the

editorial team I thank you

for spending your

valuable time with us for

this interview. We wish

you all success in all your

future endeavours.

Stephen Hawking - An Intangible Inspiration

- Sakeenathul Kubra.K., Assistant Professor, EEE Department.

“The best and most

beautiful things in the

world cannot be seen or

even touched – they must

be felt with the heart”. ”I

can’t change the direction

of the wind, but I can

adjust my sails to always

reach my destination”.

The legacy of Stephen

Hawking is well

portrayed by the above

quotes of Helen Keller

and Jimmy Dean. Stephen

Hawking – a

personification of

simplicity, brilliance and

will power against all

odds was born on January

8, 1942 in Oxford,

England to Frank and

Isobel Hawking. When

Stephen Hawking was

involved in a minor

accident, all the American

TV networks were on the

phone to his publisher

Bantam for a lowdown on

the story. Anything about

Stephen Hawking is

newsworthy. But Stephen

Hawking is no ordinary

scientist. His book A

Brief History of Time

has notched up worldwide

sales in the millions.

Interesting thing is that

Hawking’s book deals

with a subject that is so

far removed from the

normal bedtime reading

that a normal person can

understand little. At the

age of 21, during his final

year at Oxford, Stephen

Hawking was diagnosed

with a rare wasting

disease called motor

neuron disease

(amyotrophic lateral

sclerosis) which had

symptoms like increased

clumsiness, slurred

speech. At that time

Hawking was given a life

expectancy of two years.

Problems worsened over

the decades leaving him

paralyzed, speechless and

breathing difficulties

requiring ventilator.

Despite all these

disabilities, Hawking in

collaboration with

Penrose (Fellow

Professor) extended the

singularity theorem and

proved that universe

obeys the general theory

of relativity. His studies

then extended to second

law of black hole

dynamics, quantum

gravity, quantum

mechanics and proposed

the four laws of black

hole mechanics. Hawking

has received numerous

awards and recognitions.

In 1974, he was elected a

Fellow of Royal Society.

Other than that he has

won several awards viz.,

Adams Prize(1966),

Eddington Medal(1975),

Hughes Medal(1976),

Albert Einstein

Award(1978), Albert

Einstein Medal(1979),

Wolf Prize in

Physics(1988), Prince of

Asturias Award for

Concord(1989), Fonseca

Prize(2008), Presidential

Medal of Freedom(2009)

and Special Breakthrough

Prize in Fundamental

Physics(2013). This list

still continues. Stephen

Hawking stands as a

symbol of human triumph

of his survival with the

strength of accomplishing

more than just most of us

would just dream about.

Stephen Hawking reminds

us that “One has to do

the best in whatever

situation he is in”.

Inspirations to become an Entrepreneur

Dr. S. Arunachalam, Associate Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronics

According to an article

by U.S. Department of

State /Bureau of

International

Information Program

an Entrepreneur is

more than starting his

own business. To some

economists, the

entrepreneur is one

who is willing to bear

the risk of a new

venture if there is a

significant chance for

profit. Others

emphasize the

entrepreneur’s role as

an innovator who

markets his innovation.

Still other economists

say that entrepreneurs

develop new goods or

processes that the

market demands and

are not currently being

supplied.

Entrepreneur‘s believe

anything is possible.

They see an

opportunity when

others see

impossibility. They take

risks, stay focused and

believe nothing is

unrealistic. They

embrace childlike

wonder and curiosity.

They take flying leaps

into the unknowns.

They contribute to

something bigger then

themselves. They Do,

Create, Learn and

Grow. They believe it’s

never too late to star

living a dream.

Successful

entrepreneurs come in

various ages, income

levels, gender, and

race. They differ in

education and

experience. But

research indicates that

most successful

entrepreneurs share

certain personal

attributes, including:

creativity, dedication,

determination,

flexibility, leadership,

passion and self-

confidence.

Entrepreneurship is an

attractive career choice.

But many decisions

have to be made before

launching and

managing a new

business, no matter its

size. Through careful

analysis of

entrepreneurs’

successes and failures,

economists have

identified key factors

such as Motivation,

Strategy and Realistic

Vision for up-and-

coming business

owners to consider

closely.

This article is aimed to

inspire students about

entrepreneurship and

to develop skills to

excel in spotting

market opportunities

and as a result change

the way the people live.

Wishing you all come

up with innovative

ideas and successfully

navigate the murky

waters of business

ownership.

All the best!
