Day of Reflection Understanding and Living the Creed:

David Endres will present a one-day reflection: "With Heart and Mind: Understanding and Living The Creed" at St. Charles, Kettering, on Saturday, August 10th, from 8:30-3:30 p.m. The day includes teachings,

Pastor’s Corner Have you ever seen the television show entitled “Hoarding‐Buried Alive?”  It is a show which takes the viewer into a home that is terribly cluttered with stuff.  With the help of professionals, the homeowner begins to clean their house.  A contributing factor to hoarding might be something any of us can fall into—affluenza.  Affluenza is a compulsion or pressure we feel to buy stuff believing that having more stuff and bigger stuff is better.  Affluenza happens when we confuse our needs with our wants and  desires.  Soon our possessions possess us.    For the rich man in today’s gospel reading, happiness was to be found in having more.  It’s not that possessions are bad.  Rather, it’s our attachment to them that brings us down.  All that the rich man was concerned about was his wealth.  All his thoughts and actions had to do with the accumulation of wealth.  There was a lack of commitment to anything else in his life.    As we set our personal goals in life it’s helpful to ask: “When you get to where you are going, where will you be?  The tragedy of this man’s life was not the abundance of his wealth but the  poverty of his values.  He had counted material success as the greatest goal in his life.”  He lived with the illusion that the more he had the happier he would be.  St. Paul reminds us “be intent  on things above rather than on things of earth.”    We heard the word vanity several times in our First Reading.  Qoheleth cries out “Vanity of vanities!   All things are vanity!”  You can hear him say “What’s the use anymore?  I work, I struggle, and I try  my best…and for what?” One way of understanding the word vanity is to look at it as an Illusion.   Sometimes the answers we give to the questions of life are not true.  They are like shadows that we chase after day in and day out.  Often we chase after things that we think will bring us happiness, but  in the end they fall short and leave us empty.      Jesus challenges us to help…not to hoard; to give…not to grasp; to grow rich in the sight of God rather than becoming rich for ourselves.  This message came across beautifully in a reflection from Martin  Luther King Jr.  

If I can help somebody as I pass along— If I can cheer somebody with a simple song, 

If I can show somebody that they’re traveling wrong, Then my livin’ will not be in vain. 

If I can do my duty as a Christian ought. If I can bring salvation to a world once wrought, If I can spread the message as the Master taught, 

Then my livin’ will not be in vain.    The goal in life is not to pile up more and more.  The goal is to love God with all your heart, mind and soul and to love your neighbor as yourself.  What are you piling up as you prepare for the future?       Fr. Angelo

Business Manager Position St. Patrick Parish in Troy is seeking a full-time Business Manager. The applicant must have a

strong sense of collaboration, organizational skills and a high degree of confidentiality. An

understanding of the mission of a Catholic Parish is preferred. This position assists the Pastor in

administration of the parish and school including; financial management and reporting, personnel

and benefits management, property and building maintenance, facilities operations, development/fund raising and other miscellaneous duties. A

degree in Accounting, Finance or Human Resources would be preferred. The candidate should have experience in one or more of the following areas: accounting, payroll, accounts

payable/receivable, facilities, development/fund raising, personnel and human resources.

Knowledge of accounting systems (Peachtree, ParishSoft) is a plus. Computer skills and
