Bishop Lenten Appeal (BLA) – Catholic Charities

Peace and good! As you know, the theme for the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA) is “Steadfast in faith and joyful in hope.” As you reflect upon the donation you have made/pledged or what type of donation/pledge you should make to the BLA, I invite you to reflect upon the ways in which the BLA embraces the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy which are actions we can perform that extend God’s compas-sion and mercy to those in need.

Catholic Charities – Supported by the BLA Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington (CCDA) fulfills the Church and Diocese of Arlington's mission of charity to anyone in need by providing compassionate, competent and professional services to strengthen and support individuals, families and communities based on the recognition of the val-ue and dignity of human life. CCDA fulfills its mission in nu-merous ways including family counseling, adoption services, immigration services, jobs, ministry, prison ministry, food pantries and family transitional housing. Over the past year, our parishioners have participated in and financially supported the following ministries of Catholic Charities:

• The St. Lucy Project, with 3 food pantries and a refriger-ated truck, provided nearly 1.2 million pounds of food to the hungry and needy in our diocese.

• Christ House Men’s Shelter and St. Margaret of Cor-

tona Family Transitional Housing Shelter empower men, women and children in need. The men and women received counseling, case management and employment skills necessary to reenter society.

• The Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic, established in

December of 2017, has provided basic medical care to nearly 500 uninsured patients.

• Prison Ministry serves those in our communities who

live on the margins and experience material and spiritual poverty – including those in prison.

These are just a few of the ministries which our parishioners participate in, as well as prayerfully and financially support. Bishop Burbidge shares: “As we serve the poor in word and deed, may we open ourselves to the source of true love and hope, Jesus Christ. Guided by His Holy Spirit, may our works of charity bring us and all those we serve closer to God and one another."

Parish Response: On March 16, Bishop Burbidge an-nounced via a video message that until further notice, all public celebrations of the Mass are canceled throughout the Diocese.

Bishop Burbidge has asked pastors to keep churches open to the public, so that those who choose to pray, are welcome to do so in the presence of our Eucharistic Lord, while keeping a safe distance from one another and not exceeding the 10-person limit. With public celebrations of the Sunday Mass canceled, the faithful are encouraged to devote time to prayer, observe Mass on television or the internet, and pray the Rosary along with other devotions.

The Diocese co-sponsors a televised Sunday Mass with the Archdiocese of Washington. It takes place at the Basilica Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington and is available at 10:30am on Sundays on two local TV stations as well as online. Go to ArlingtonDiocese.org/TVMass for more information or to view the Mass.

Diocesan Catholic School Response: Diocesan Catholic schools have canceled all school-sponsored international travel through June 30, 2020. All domestic overnight travel from March 11 through May 1, 2020, is canceled.

With regard to school closures, schools are following Governor Ralph Northams's directive to close for the following two weeks. Those closures are in effect through Friday, March 27. Some counties have announced closures that extend beyond the Governor's mandate, and our schools will follow the dates of closure in the jurisdiction they normally follow for weather re-lated closures.

Let us continue to pray for all who are suffering from the coro-navirus and other illnesses and diseases at this time. Let us also pray for our health care professionals who are caring, serving and monitoring this illness. St. Joseph, pray for us!

The Parish staff wishes to thank the following parish minis-tries: We wish to thank the parishioners who have made their pledg-es and donations to the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA). Your pledges and donations will assist the Bishop in his com-mitment to provide the means for the diocese to share the “works of mercy” to those in need. For the parishioners who are still reflecting upon their pledge/donation to the BLA, we invite you to reflect upon the ways in which the BLA embraces the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. “Steadfast in faith and joyful in hope.” We wish to thank our parishioners for their understanding dur-ing this global health crisis. We wish to thank our SJS administration, faculty and staff for their dedication to our students. We thank each of you in ad-vance for your patience and flexibility in the coming weeks. We wish to thank our SJS students and parents for their coop-eration in moving to a virtual courseroom environment. We thank each of you in advance for your patience and flexibility in the coming weeks. We wish to thank our SJC staff for their dedication for over-seeing the safety, health, and well-being of our faith communi-ty, buildings, and grounds. We thank each of you in advance for your patience and flexibility in the coming weeks.
