In my lifetime I have either experienced or witnessed major displays of “nature’s power,” including hurricanes and storms,

earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions that affect air travel, the tsunamis that killed many in Indonesia and Japan in the past

couple of decades, and if we include today’s events, a global pandemic. The thing about all these events is that they remind

me of how small and insignificant I am and how little I can do to prevent or manage these situations. Yet, as massive as these

forces might be, there is something a lot more powerful and terrifying, and yet, infinitely more merciful.

This weekend we will read about the time the prophet Elijah was able to witness the presence of God. For a little context, the

prophet was not doing well in his mission as a prophet, despite successfully demonstrating the great power of God against the

priests of Baal, he was still persecuted by the queen. From his perspective he was fighting a losing battle, as most of the

prophets faithful to God were killed and he thought he was the last one. He was fully aware of God’s power, but he couldn’t

ignore the circumstances that he was going through, and as such it became difficult to have certainty that he had God’s

support. If we consider life today, some have wondered if the pandemic and related issues are a sort of divine punishments,

a manifestation of God’s anger to a sinful people. God could certainly mete out judgment in that manner, but his power is not

manifested in destruction, because anything can destroy, but rather in creation and maintaining said creation. It is for this

reason that God showed his presence, but he was not in the strong wind, nor the earthquake, nor the fire, but rather in the soft

whisper.

My dear brothers and sisters, as terrible as the pandemic and all the other things that 2020 has been giving us, let us not be

distracted from that gentle voice of God who calls us to have faith, to not be afraid. Much like the prophet, we might feel

overwhelmed, tired, or just fed up with our new reality. The news cycle does not help as it is always showing more and more

calamity, more scandal, more things to be upset with. This is not to say that these things are not real, but the more we fill

ourselves with the same cycle of worries the more, we make the troubles our only reality, and like the prophet, we might fall

in a despair that makes us believe that our efforts are for nothing; that there is no hope for the future; that we are alone.

Therefore, it is important that we take this period of isolation as an opportunity to try to listen for that quiet whisper. After

you have consumed an adequate amount of information, disconnect yourself from that and occupy your heart and mind in

other things, hobbies that calm you, activities that enrich you for the future, quality time with your loved ones to remind you

that you are not alone, prayer to center you and allow you to see God and his love in your life. We cannot focus on the storm,

or we will be swept away by it, rather focus on the Lord who is our rock that will save us from the storm.

patient and kind.

Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our

hearts.

We come to you with confidence,

knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother,

health of the sick and cause of our joy.

Shelter us under the mantle of your protection,

Keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to

know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
