Questions about the Eucharist Our Sunday Visitor: An excerpt from 'The Gift of Faith'

Edited by then Bishop Donald W. Wuerl, Thomas Comerford Lawler, and Ronald Lawler, O.F.M. Cap.

(Reference: Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1322-1405; 1536-1589)

1. What is the Holy Eucharist?

The Eucharist is a sacrament, a sacrifice, and a sacred banquet. Under the appearance of bread and wine our Savior Jesus Christ is entirely present in this sacrament, body and blood, soul and divinity. In this sacrament He offers Himself in sacrifice to the Father, and is received as spiritual nourishment.

The word "Eucharist" means thanksgiving. Our Lord in a most special way gave thanks to the Father as He offered it. Moreover, the Eucharistic sacrifice is the most excellent means we have of expressing our thanks to God.

2. Why is the Eucharist the center of Catholic life?

The Eucharist is the center of Catholic life precisely because Christ is the center of all our life. In this sacrament Christ gives Himself totally, that we might share His life and be bound together in His mystical body.

"No Christian community can be built up unless it has its basis and center in the celebration of the Most Holy Eucharist". "For the Most Blessed Eucharist contains the Church’s entire spiritual wealth, that is, Christ Himself, our Passover and living bread" 3. Was the Eucharist foreshadowed in the Old Testament?

Yes. In every age God taught mankind to hope for salvation. But in the divine plan salvation was to be achieved only by the sacrifice Christ offered of Himself upon the cross, a sacrifice that is made present now in all places through the sacrifice of the Mass. The sacrifices of the old law could not of themselves bring salvation, but they could and did foreshadow the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

The Eucharist as sacrifice was symbolized in a special way in the sacrifice of the Paschal lamb, at the time God was about to lead His people from the slavery of Egypt and guide them toward the promised land. The Eucharist was represented by the manna given to sustain the people of God as they wandered through the desert to the homeland that God planned to give them.

Gospel Reflection

GOSPEL: Matthew 14:13-21 This miracle is told six times in the four Gospels. This underlines its importance in the life of the early

church. Only Matthew mentions that Jesus decides to go to a quiet place after he hears of the death of John

the Baptist. Jesus most likely has to be aware of what happens to those who ‘speak truth to power,’ but

Jesus’ quiet time is interrupted by the crowds hungry for his teaching. Matthew tells us that when Jesus sees

the large crowds, he feels compassion for them. Jesus’ need for solitude is overtaken by his care for the

people. When Jesus’ disciples encourage him to let the people go so they can buy some food before the local

deli closes, Jesus challenges them to give them something to eat. We can almost hear the disciples say, “You

must be kidding, Master! How can we feed thousands of people?” Jesus goes on to feed the thousands with

a few loaves and fish. Matthew, writing several decades later for mostly Jewish Christians, sees what Jesus

did as a fulfillment of how God fed their ancestors in the desert. Also, for Matthew, this miracle points to

the Eucharist. The gestures and words are like those used at the Last Supper: “He took bread, blessed it,

broke it, and gave it to them.” The twelve leftover baskets point to the superabundance of what God offers

us, his people.

GOD BLESS EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED, WORKED AND VOLUNTEERED IN SUMMER PROGRAM!

THE STUDENTS LOVED MUSIC CLASS AND SNACK THE MOST, I’M GUESSING, BUT IT WAS WONDERFUL

St. Joseph Parish, August 2, 2020

Your Will, St. Joseph Parish and You

One important way to help St. Joseph Parish is to remember the parish in your will. The church’s mission throughout history has been aided, boosted, and propped up by people leaving a portion of their estate to the church. It is another way to prac-tice your stewardship of treasure, in addition to the Sunday offering. Nowadays it is common for Catholic funeral notices to mention a suggested dona-tion to hospice, or to some other medical institution or society. While this is a good and noble thing, unfortunately, the church is not mentioned. In fact, the church is usually not remembered by the friends or family of the deceased, nor is it mentioned in their last will and testament. I know that many of you have other charities that are worthy of leaving money to, including, of course, your children and grandchildren! Because the need of the church is great, I would ask you prayerfully to consider counting the church as one of your children in your estate. Maybe some of you could do even more. Again, please prayerfully consider this, and, if it seems right and just to you, please change your will to remember the church. For questions or assistance, please call the parish office at (513) 941-3661. Yours in Christ,

Fr. Andrew Umberg
