They shall name him Emmanuel

With just a few days to go before Christmas, we get to the true heart of what the mystery of the Christmas season is really all about. Unlike St. Luke, St. Matthew begins telling the story of Jesus’ birth through the eyes of St. Joseph, rather than Jesus’ mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary. What’s most powerful here, is what is being fulfilled. St. Matthew quotes the prophet Isaiah, who we’ve heard from every Sunday this Advent: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” That bears repeating: “God is with us.” I’d recommend spending time in prayer with just those words. This is what God the Father saw fit to give to us – His own Son…to be with us. This is really amazing and powerful stuff. That God, the almighty, the omnipotent, the omniscient, the eternal, the immutable, the transcendent, the impeccable saw fit to, as St. Paul says, empty Himself and become man. God loves us and it is out of love for us that He does this. So, in these final days of the Advent season, how can we make our own final preparations in our hearts for God to really be with us.

Blessings for a wonderful holiday season. I am happy and looking for-ward to celebrating my first Christmas with all of you this year.

Peace, Fr. Jason Johnston

REFLECTION

When he discovered that Mary was with child, Jo-

seph resolved to end their engagement with as little

disgrace as possible. But obedient to the voice of

God, he changed those plans and became instead

the protector of the child Jesus and His mother,

Mary. God grant that I may be as open to the leading

of the Holy Spirit!
