A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKOur readings, this Sunday, relate to healing. The Old Testament reading gives just a few of the horrible rules established by the Mosaic community to protect itself from leprosy. Lepers were ostracized by their families and community and considered “unclean.” Jesus stretched out his hand and touched the leper and said, “Be made clean.” Thus, the poor leper was healed physically and socially.

At the conclusion of Mark’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims what signs His people will accomplish; among them is laying hands on the sick, and they will recover. As a Church, we possess the wonderful capacity to be instruments of the healing power of Christ. The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is precisely the celebration of this healing. We celebrate World Day of the Sick this weekend. At the 5 p.m. Mass, this Sunday, February 11th, we will offer the Sacrament of Anointing to those who are seriously ill, physically, emotionally or spiritually.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2018. Masses on Ash Wednesday are 6:30, 8 and 9:30 a.m., 12:10 Noon and 6:30 p.m. The distribution of ashes takes place after the homily. The practice of wearing ashes comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. It symbolizes the dust from which God made us and the grief that we have sinned.

Ash Wednesday is a day of abstinence from meat and also a day of fast, that is, limited to a single full meal. All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence from meat. All those who are fourteen years old are bound to the law of abstinence. The law of fast binds all who are 18 years old and not yet 59.

    Weekday Masses: Monday & Tuesday 6:30 & 8:00 a.m.

    Wednesday 6:30 & 8:00 a.m. 6:30 p.m.

    Thursday 6:30, 8:00 a.m. & 12:10 noon.

    Friday 6:30 & 8:00 a.m.

    Saturday 8:00 a.m.

    Exposition & Benediction: Mondays at 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

    Confessions: Monday evenings, 6-7 p.m. (except March 26) Saturday afternoons, 4 to 4:45 p.m.

Stations of the Cross: Friday evenings at 7 p.m.

    INSPIRE

General Intersession: For strong and holy priests who can reveal God’s healing presence to those who suffer and mourn, we pray to the Lord!

Vocations: In today's first reading, the healing ministry of the priest is revealed in the Old Testament. In the New Covenant, priests heal in a variety of ways, most notably through the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Anointing of the Sick. Is God calling you to serve His Church as a priest? Please speak with your pastor or call or write Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113 or [email protected]). Be sure to visit our website: www.cdow.org/vocations!

Jesus’ compassion for the leper leads Him to heal the man of his ailment. It is this same compassion that leads Christ to heal each of us. His love goes beyond sympathy and shows how to truly be empathetic. His love for us is so profound that He feels our pain. He wants us to turn to Him so He can relieve this pain, and make us stronger. Are there things in your life that you currently

struggle with? Jesus wants to hear about them, and He wants to help. During these times we often need assistance to understand how the Lord is directing us. In these moments one should turn to a priest or spiritual director for aid and understanding. Jesus is always with you, and desires to help you on your path. Remember you do not have to do it on your own.

We know the words, “Where charity and love are found, there is God.” While we tend to focus on charity, especially at Parish Outreach, the love component is just as, if not more, important. Charity and Love go hand in hand in the way we approach our generosity, especially to the less fortunate among us.
Recently, we have seen those who are in need soliciting for cash assistance in the parking lot after Masses. While the temptation to help is admirable, sometimes a cash hand out isn’t always the best solution for those truly in need. To help address this, Outreach is now providing emergency food bags and information postcards in the back of the church during the weekends when we are not open. If someone expresses a need at Mass, please direct them to one of the ushers. They are trained to assist. Outreach is equipped to help those truly in need by meeting with them and addressing their needs in terms of food, and clothing, as well as other social services. Thank you for your continued generosity to our vital ministry.

MEET THE RCIA CANDIDATE My name is Kaitlin Repella, I have been attending St. John the Beloved church for several years with my fiancé and his family. I currently am employed at J.P. Morgan and work on the Global Wealth Management team. I am a very eager person who loves to learn which is why I will be starting Grad school in the fall working toward my MBA. As for hobbies,I take Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts classes. Since I have been attending St. John the Beloved Parish for several years, it began to peak my curiosity to want to learn more about the Catholic faith. Being raised as a Baptist we worshiped very differently even though they are from the Christian faith. I feel that God has spoken to me and guided me to the Catholic Church and that is the greatest gift that anyone can receive. I plan on raising my family in the Catholic faith which is why I wanted to become a member of the Church. The RCIA process so far has challenged me to look at faith in a different

way. For example the Baptists never prayed to Saints and now I understand that the Saints are important people who serve as “examples” for us. By praying to God and to the Saints as well, they can guide us through any obstacle that we are trying to overcome. The RCIA has helped me to be more comfortable at Mass by knowing where to find which readings will be heard on a particular Sunday and when to kneel, sit, and stand. Also I have learned a lot about the history of religion through the RCIA class which I find to be truly fascinating.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS: This year Ash Wednesday and Valentine's Day are both on February 14. How might we reconcile these two seemingly opposite themes? The Ash Wednesday reading beckons you to "Return to me with your whole heart. (Joel 2:12) The "me" can be God or the spirit of God within your beloved.

PARENTING POINTERS: Ash Wednesday is February 14. Prepare for Lent by talking with your family about how this can be a time of generosity and mercy (forgiveness). Think about ways your family can live more simply. *Provided by Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net
