SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION

The notion of shepherd calls forth strong and manly qualities. He must have courage in the pastures of the Orient. Wild beasts often attacked his herds. When Saul doubts his strength, David says to him: “Thy servant kept his father’s herds at pasture, and often a lion or a bear came and snatched a lamb from the midst of it; and I went out after him and struck him, and took the animal from his mouth.”

This image of the brave young shepherd well suits Christ, the victor of Eastertide who stands amongst us today and says, “I give my life for my sheep.” In it all the images of the good shepherd from the Old Testament are fulfilled. He tells us that he is the fulfillment of the promise “I am the good shepherd.” And now it is clear as well why this image of the shepherd belongs above all to Eastertime. It has often shown full of promise on the long road of the Pasch, from the beginning of the fasting season to the great week of suffering. But it was first the Passion which revealed the Lord properly as the good shepherd of his sheep. A hired shepherd whose sheep are not his own has not love’s courage to risk death for them. The Lord says, “He has no concern for the sheep.” When he sees the wolf come he leaves the sheep alone and runs off. His only concern is for his pay, not for the beasts themselves. Evil shepherds such as these were the leaders of Israel whom the prophet Ezechiel accuses, and whom Christ found in places of authority when he came to visit his flock.

Christ is the good shepherd, the real shepherd. The sheep belong to him; he has created them. He is God’s Logos through who all things are made. All things are his; they have fallen from him, and yet he loves them. He comes as a shepherd and wounds himself for this miserable flock. He fights with the wild beasts, with hell and sin, and death, to snatch these sheep, led astray, from Satan’s mouth. He does more than any human shepherd does. He throws himself to the attackers, so to speak, in place of the sheep.

ATTENTION ST JOHN PARISHIONERS — MAY 8, 2016First Holy Communion will be celebrated on

Sunday, May 8, 2016 at the 8:30am Mass.We have seven children in Jamie Thelen’s second grade class, who will be making their First Communion. Pews will be reserved for the families (one pew per family)—so seating will be at a premium on that Sunday. Be advised that the 8:30 Mass will most likely be very crowded as it is Mother’s Day, May Crowning and First Holy Communion!

Dear Parishioners,

Christ Jesus has loved us so deeply as to make Himself available to us for the Celebration of the Paschal Mystery at Holy Mass, for reception of Holy Communion and for adoration of His Divine and August Presence in our Church’s tabernacle. As you know, and as we all strive to honor, when we walk into a Catholic Church we walk into God’s Temple and are in His Divine and August Presence. The Church says that as soon as we enter into the Church we genuflect to recognize and honor the Divine Presence of the Most Holy Eucharist. Reverence and awe is our reaction to this great privilege of being in the presence of God Who makes His dwelling among us. The Catechism teaches:

"1387 To prepare for worthy reception of this sacrament (The Eucharist*), the faithful should observe the fast required in their Church. Bodily demeanor (gestures, clothing) ought to convey the respect, solemnity,

and joy of this moment when Christ becomes our guest.”

To help us reverence our dear Lord and to teach our young ones the reverence due our Lord, let us be careful to: dress well for Holy Mass, not bring any food or drinks into the Church (including gum), spend time in quiet prayer before and after Holy Mass, make sure we provide for a quiet atmosphere before and after Holy Mass out of honor for our Lord and to assist others who wish to pray. If we could make our visits quietly in the vestibule or outside before and after Mass we can build up the atmosphere of reverence and awe and help our young ones learn to honor the Temple of our Lord’s dwelling. Thank you for your help in this. God bless!  Fr. Arnsparger

FAITH FORMATIONAttention ALL Parents, Teens and Youth of the Parish All youth and teens of the parish are reminded and encouraged to be modest in their speech, dress and behavior. To be modest is to be free from conceit and vanity and is to be humble and respectful, not only to self but to others. As spring and warmer weather are now with us, all youth are expected to be respectful in their attire—whether at Mass, in youth programs and at any church function or event. When attending Mass, ALL are encouraged to wear his/her clean, neat and respectful “Sunday best.” For parish programs such as adult education, parish mission, fellowship dinners or events your attire should be “nice casual.” For FF classes and Youth Group your attire (clothing) may be casual but should always be respectful:

All clothing (male/female) should be modest as befits honoring the body and reverencing God. We thank you for your cooperation and efforts to provide a respectful environment in and for the parish. — Theresa Fitch, Director of Faith Formation and Youth Ministry

Modesty is one of the Twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit, which are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, chastity. Modesty in dress and behavior pertains to both genders. May we each strive to be a virtuous example of modesty for others to emulate.
