TOURIST ATTRACTIONS NEAR THE HUNTING AREA
FRANTIŠKOVY LÁZNE
When Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was staying in Františkovy Lázně, he described the town as
“heaven on earth”. To this days the smallest settlement in the famous West Bohemian spa triangle
– the other two points being Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázně – still boasts elegant neo-Classical
colonnades, well-pruned parks, an agreeable ambience and a feeling of tranquillity, rest and
relaxation. Come and see for yourself if the words of the famous German poet still hold true, and
enjoy some time in the town that gave the world its first mud spa. Locals began to notice the curative
properties of the local springs around five centuries ago.The spa town itself, however, was only
founded in the 18th century by Austrian Emperor Franz I, after whom it is named. At its zenith
people like Johann Strauss, Prince Metternich, Kafka and Beethoven came to take the cure.
7
In Františkovy Lázně you can put yourself in the capable hands of no less than 20 cold mineral
springs, top-quality natural mud and gases with curative properties. All of these are used in the
treatment of the muscular-skeletal system, cardiovascular disease and, in particular,
gynaecological problems, including infertility. However, the graceful spa houses also offer
enjoyable wellness procedures, which are guaranteed to return your lost vitality, rejuvenate the
body and de-stress the mind. It’s not just Brussels that uses the symbol of a little boy – Františkovy
Lázně does too. The West Bohemian boy’s name is František and he is said to have miraculous
powers. Locals believe that if a woman touches his statue in a certain place, she is guaranteed to
become pregnant. Not far from the well-known statue you can drink from the František Spring.
Strolling along the main avenue, don’t forget to stop by at the House U Dvou zlatých lvů (At the
Two Golden Lions) where Beethoven stayed during his visits to the town. If you like a bit of watery
fun, why not enliven your visit with a splash around at the Aquaforum, where both indoor and
outdoor pools, water slides, whirlpools, water caves, saunas, hydromassage and beach volleyball
courts await.
CHEB
The West Bohemian city of Cheb is one of the oldest and historically most valuable Czech cities. It
is also a place that witnessed one of the greatest conspiracies in Czech history. Due to the large
number of magnificently preserved historical sites and its unique medieval atmosphere, Cheb is
one of the most beautiful cities in the Czech Republic. The city’s history is inextricably linked with
the figure of Albrecht von Wallenstein, who remains one of the most controversial figures in Czech
and European history. The merchant, politician and military commander gradually worked his
way to becoming one of the most powerful personalities in Europe in his time. His power began to
reach such proportions that even the emperor feared him. Based on unsubstantiated charges of an
attempted power grab, he had him assassinated. It happened in 1634 in the Pachelbel House on
Cheb’s main square. Today you can see an exhibition here on the life and death of this important
army general. When you walk through the medieval square in Cheb, your eyes will immediately
fall on the city's symbol – Špalíček. This picturesque group of eleven medieval merchants’ houses
grew up here as early as the 13th century. Looming over them are the soaring twin towers of St.
Nicholas’ Church. Do not forget to explore the grounds of the castle, which has been standing
here for more than 800 years. You will see a preserved section of the Romanesque fortifications,
including the Black Tower, and the castle chapel.

KONOPIŠTĚ CHATEAU
Konopiště Castle, founded as a Gothic fortress, was inspired by French fortresses with
a symmetrical layout of the towers, several entrances and drawbridges. Thanks to many
modifications, it was gradually converted into a romantic chateau with luxuriously furnished
interior modified for the everyday life of the aristocracy. The owner of Konopiště chateau and the
founder of the agricultural buildings surrounding the chateau including the Stará Myslivna (old
gamekeeper’s lodge) was Austria’s Archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este, the heir to the Austrian-
Hungarian throne and the nephew of Emperor and King Franz Joseph I. He used Konopiště
Chateau as the residence for his three children and wife Sophia, from the Czech noble family of
Chotek. He significantly rebuilt the chateau at the end of the 19th century and also made changes
in the outlying lands.
Konopiště Chateau
The heir to the throne was not only a passionate hunter and collector of hinting trophies,
but also an art collector. Franz Ferdinand was a passionate hunter and collector.
14
Trophy Corridor in Chateau Konopiště
During a tour of the chateau, you can admire his valuable collection of weapons, the so-called Este
Armoury, which is one of the largest in Europe. Franz Ferdinand also had an extension built
comprising one room to hold more than 1,000 portraits of St. George, with which he allegedly
wanted to beat the similar collection owned by the King of England. The Great Trophy Corridor
bears testament to Franz Ferdinand’s passion for hunting. The archduke killed almost 300,000
animals during his life. The representative lounges with exceptionally valuable Italian cabinets,
the Great Dining Hall with ceiling paintings and the living room of Franz Ferdinand’s family will
provide you with an insight into everyday life at the chateau. When visiting the chateau, you must
make sure to have a look around the extensive chateau park with free-roaming pheasants,
peacocks and quails. The pleasant aroma of the Rose Gardens and their greenhouses make them
the ideal spot to have a rest in an estate that belonged to a man that had a lead role in the European
history. Infact on June 28th, 1914 Franz Ferdinand and his wife, the Duchess Sophia of
Hohenberg, were assassinated in Sarajevo. His death was the pretext for the outbreak of the First
World War. World War Two also influenced history at Konopiště, with the SS headquarters being
established here.
KARLŠTEJN CASTLE
Karlštejn Castle holds an absolutely exceptional position among Czech castles. It was established
by the Czech king and Roman emperor Charles IV as a place to store the royal treasures,
collections of holy relics and the crown jewels. The very impressive layout of the castle buildings
from the settlement outside the castle walls right up to the Imperial Palace and the towers rising
over it will captivate you with their ingenuity. In the castle Chapel of the Holy Cross, you will then
merely contemplate the pictures of Master Theodoric in silent wonder. Set out for the most-visited
castle in the Czech Republic and discover the treasures it has hidden for centuries!Karlštejn Castle
was completed in 1365 and apart from its beautiful decoration, it also stands out among the others
for its stepped layout according to the importance of individual parts of the castle.
15
Karlštejn Castle
At the lowest point, you will find the settlement outside the castle walls with the Burgrave’s Palace
and its originally designed well, the two-storey Imperial Palace spreads out above this with the
bedrooms of the king, his court and noblewomen, on the next level, the smaller Marian Tower with
chapels reaches for the sky and at the very top you will find the dominant Great Tower, in which
the Czech royal treasures were supposed to be stored. Climb from the pikes to the gold and precious
stones! The Chapel of the Holy Cross located in the highest High Tower enjoyed such esteem that
Charles IV entered it barefoot as a sign of humility and had it fitted with three iron doors and nine
locks. Its decoration is inspired by the description of Heavenly Jerusalem in the biblical book of
Revelations. The chapel was used as a repository for the crown jewels and held Charles’ collection
of the remains of saints. The chapel with four windows, partially glazed with precious stones, cross
vaults with profiled ribs, frescoes from the life of Christ and 129 unique panels depicting the saints
by Master Theodoric make a visit to this sacred room a truly ethereal experience. Apart from
beautifully furnished rooms, you will also find duplicates of the Czech crown jewels at Karlštejn
as well as the crown jewels of the Holy Roman Empire, not to mention a well 80 metres deep where
raising and lowering of the well buckets was accomplished by a wheel which used to be trodden by
people. Karlštejn has been a great muse for artists since time immemorial. According to one legend,
Karlštejn Castle was intended only for the secular and spiritual needs of King Charles IV, so
women were forbidden from entering. Another legend tells of a blind musician who used to play
the lute accompanied by his faithful dog. The Prince of Brunswick was visiting once with
a treacherous butler who wanted to poison the nobleman. He passed him a goblet with poison, but
the prince offered this to the blind lute player to slake his thirst as he had been playing so
beautifully all day. The faithful dog did not let his master drink from the goblet, jumped onto his
lap and drank it himself.
THE BEER MUZEUM IN PLZEN
Words such as pils, pilsner or pilsener are known the whole world over. We have the brewery in
Plzeň to thank for the creation of this legendary lager. If you are a fan of this amber nectar, Plzeň
is a place you absolutely must visit. Behind the historical gates, two breweries await you with beer
that is the family silver of the Czech lands. So “Cheers”! The city of Plzeň exudes the history of
beer and a medieval atmosphere. Whether you visit the Plzeň brewery, the Brewery Museum or the
16
pubs in Plzeň, wherever you go, you will feel the living history which dates right back to the 13th
century. The right to brew beer was granted to the citizens of Plzeň all the way back in 1295 by
King Wenceslas II. However, the quality of the beer fluctuated significantly and a city councillor
even had 36 barrels of bad quality beer poured away. This provided an impulse for foundation of
the new “Citizens’ Brewery”. The first batch was brewed in the new brewery in the 19th century by
the gifted Bavarian brewer Josef Groll from Vilshofen. A combination of Saaz hops, the soft water
in Plzeň and lighter malt was a great success and kick-started the legendary production of Plzeň
beer. During a tour of the Plzeňský Prazdroj brewery, you will pass through the authentic
surroundings of the place where the world famous lager Pilsner Urquell is made. You will view an
exhibition of the ingredients used, the historical and current brew house and bottling plant. A true
delicacy is then a tasting session of unfiltered beer, tapped from oak barrels. The next time
somebody asks you where it was that you tasted the best beer ever you will certainly remember
Plzeňský Prazdroj. During a tour of the second of the Plzeň breweries, Gambrinus, you can have
fun in the interactive arena. If you want to become a true beer expert, training in how to tap and
care for beer awaits you. You can round off the whole tour in the traditional Czech brewery
restaurant “Na Spilce”, which is located on the premises of the former fermentation cellar.
KŘIVOKLÁT CASTLE
Dense forests, massive rocks, mysterious castles and ruins as well as the wide and
calm River Berounka flowing through the whole of the Křivoklátsko and Rakovnicko
region – this is how you could describe one of the most beautiful regions lying on the
border of Central, West and North Bohemia. Get to know this emerald gem of
Europe – the Protected Landscape Area of Křivoklátsko – and discover the history
of the Gothic Křivoklát Castle. In this region intersected by a great number of cycle
paths and hiking routes, hops of the highest global quality and with a subtle aroma
are also cultivated. Křivoklátsko and Rakovnicko are dominated by the River
Berounka, which was created by the confluence of four rivers near the city of Plzeň.
You can visit natural formations along its course such as “Little America” and “Big
America”, the Skryjská Lake reservation and museum of fossils, the magnificent
Křivoklát, Žebrák or Točník castles and last but not least the Celtic centre in Chateau
Nižbor. A dominant feature of the area is one of the oldest of Czech castles, Křivoklát,
which apparently got its name from its crooked foundations. The extensive and
17
magnificent castle was a representative seat of Czech kings hidden in the deep forests
which served as royal hunting grounds. The most valuable part of the castle, with its
monumental round tower, is the Royal Hall, the largest in Bohemia after the
Vladislav Hall at Prague Castle. The Füstenberg Library
will amaze you with its books numbering almost thirty thousand. One of the towers
called Huderka was used to hold the legendary alchemist Edward Kelly, whose
unsuccessful attempt at escape ended with a broken leg. You can explore an extensive
hunting collection in the Great Tower. Cultural events and traditional markets held
at Křivoklát will provide you with an insight into the crafts and products made by
the inhabitants of the Křivoklátsko area.
KUTNÁ HORA
St. Barbara Cathedral in Kutnà Hora
Kutná Hora, the city of silver, is deservedly attributed the other name “national
treasury”. This is to say that its wealth helped to ensure the boom of the Czech Kingdom.
The centre of the city was included in the Unesco world heritage list in 1995 thanks to
its historical importance and architectural gems. All of the streets, houses and churches
exude a long history full of important events. The symbol of Kutná Hora is the unique
late Gothic Cathedral of St Barbara. The Wallachian Court became the centre of
economic events, seat of the rulers and the royal mint, in which the first groschen were
already being minted under the reign of Wenceslas II, who called in experts to Kutná
18
Hora from the Italian city of Florence and started a currency reform. Apart from the
exhibition of minting coins, you can also visit the “Museum of Uncovering of the
Mysterious Face”, where you will get to know criminals, witches, heretics and arsonists
in the cellars of the Wallachian Court as well as their judges and executioners. A visit
to the Cathedral Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. John the
Baptist and the world famous Ossuary of the Cemetery Church of All Saints is an
amazing experience in its own right. However, the late Gothic Cathedral of Saint
Barbara is a unique building, thanks to which your visit to this royal city will become
a powerful experience. This architectural and church gem was built by the local
master builders over the course of more than 500 years.
