CHRIST, THE KING The selection from the book of Daniel presented in today’s first reading was part of an attempt to weave a vision of ultimate success for the Jews under persecu-tion. Exactly whom the author had in mind when he re-fers to “one like a Son of Man” is hotly disputed by scholars today. The fact is, we simply do not know if the author meant anyone in particular or if this is a collec-tive, figurative image of Israel’s triumph. What we do know is that the early Christian community seized upon this passage and recognized it as a messianic prophe-cy, a foretelling of the ultimate triumph of Jesus as the Christ of God. The Lectionary’s juxtaposition of this text with today’s Gospel narrative of Jesus before Pilate is a wonderful example of how the liturgy “layers” passages with new meaning by inserting them in a particular con-text. The celebration of Christ the King allows us to hear these passages with a new depth of meaning in light of our contemporary understanding of how, in Jesus and his resurrection and ascension, we have seen the fulfillment of Daniel’s vision of ulti-mate deliverance. The veiled admission of Jesus before Pilate that he did indeed have a kingdom “not here” takes on new meaning against the cos-mic vision of Daniel, who allows us to glimpse the “Ancient One” on his heavenly throne.Copyright © J. Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of Your servant, St. Junípero Serra, and for all the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, That Your Kingdom might extend to the ends of the heart. Help us to walk in their footsteps as missionary dis-ciples. Guided by their example, may we be always faithful and courageous in proclaiming the Gospel of Your Son, Jesús Christ our Lord. Father, look upon Your family here in Los Angeles with mercy. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Despite the fact that the feast of Christ the King was established less than a century ago, it has already undergone a shift in focus. When Pope Pius XI estab-lished this feast in 1925, nationalism and fascism were on the rise. The pope intended that it be a “vehicle for spiritual teaching,” one that would recog-nize the ultimate authority of Christ over all political and social scheming. The last Sunday of October was chosen as the date for the feast because of its proxim-ity to the feast of All Saints, those men and women who bore witness to Christ’s reign in so many different ways. The calendar reforms of 1969 moved the feast to the last Sunday of the liturgical year. There, in the context of November’s focus on the end times, Christ’s sec-ond coming at the end of all time is highlighted. The threefold cycle of readings also expands our imagina-tions in regard to this feast. In this year’s Gospel, Christ stands before Pilate, whose own power blinds him to the truth of the Lord’s kingdom. In a world where oppression still holds sway over too many peo-ple, this feast is somehow still as timely as when Pope Pius XI first established it.—James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

To baptize a Child under the age of six years, parents should register the child at least two weeks in advance and bring his/her Birth Certificate or Certification of the Hospital. Baptisms are performed the Third Saturday of the month at 12:00 noon. Registra-

tions are made during Office hours. Only the mother or father may register a child. Note: Godparents, if they are a couple living to-gether must be married by the Church. If Single, must be Catholic, baptized, confirmed and have received First Communion. (At the moment the Pre-baptismal classes are not being taught.)

Para bautizar a un/a niño/a recién nacido a seis años, se requiere que sean registrados con dos semanas de anticipación, presentar Acta de Nacimiento. Puede presentar el

Certificado del Hospital solamente si el niño/a no a cumplido el primer año de edad. Los Bautismos son cada sábado a las 12:00 md. El tercer Sábado del mes, la ceremonia es en Ingles solamente. Solamente el papá o la mamá pueden registrarlos. Los Padrinos, un hombre y una mujer, solamente una pareja, deben ser mayores de 16 años y haber recibido los 3 Sacramentos: Bautismo, Primera Comunión y Confirmación. Si son pareja, deben ser casados por la Iglesia, de lo contrario deberán ser solteros sin compromiso. Para registrar, favor de pasar a la rectoría durante el horario de oficina. (Por el momento no se están impartiendo las clases prebautismales; )

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE .El 23 de noviembre de 1927, un pelotón de solda-dos conducía al jesuita mexicano Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez al paredón de fusilamiento. Uno de ellos le su-surraba “perdóneme”. Miguel le respondió que no sólo lo perdonaba, sino que le daba las gracias por darle la oportunidad de dar testimonio de su fe derramando su sangre por Cristo. Días antes había sido arrestado y acusado de intento de asesinato contra el presidente mexicano Álvaro Obregón. En realidad su delito era el de bautizar niños, bendecir matrimonios, llevar la co-munión a los enfermos y escuchar la confesión de los arrepentidos. Miguelito nació en 1891 y entró al noviciado jesuita en 1914, al mismo tiempo que el gobierno mexicano comenzaba una persecución en contra de la Iglesia. Debido a esta situación, Miguel tuvo que hacer su for-mación religiosa fuera de México. Apenas pudo, regresó a su nación como sacerdote e hizo su pastoral a escon-didas, sabiendo muy bien que podía ser martiriza-do.Miguel decía a sus amigos que al morir iría al cielo y si se encontraba con santos resecos, bailaría un jarabe tapatío hasta hacerles sonreír para Cristo Rey. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. CRISTO REY La selección del libro de Daniel para la primera lectura de hoy forma parte de un intento de tejer una visión del éxito final de los judíos perseguidos. Exactamente qué tenía el autor en mente cuando se refiere a “uno semejante a un Hijo de hombre” es muy disputado por los eruditos de hoy. El hecho es que, simplemente, no sabemos si el autor quiso decir a alguien en particular o si se trata de una imagen colectiva, figurativa del triunfo de Israel. Lo que sí sabemos es que la primera comunidad cristiana se apoderó de este pasaje y lo reconoció como una profecía mesiánica, un anuncio de la victoria final de Jesús como el Cristo de Dios. El contraste que hace el leccionario de este texto con la narrativa del Evangelio de hoy de Jesús ante Pilato es un maravilloso ejemplo de cómo la liturgia da a ciertos pasajes nuevas “capas” de significado mediante la inserción en un contexto particular. La celebración de Cristo Rey nos permite escuchar estos pasajes con una nueva profundidad de significado a la luz de nuestra comprensión contemporánea de cómo, en Jesús y su Resurrección y Ascensión, hemos visto el cumplimiento de la visión de Daniel de la liberación final. La admisión velada de Jesús ante Pilato que, efectivamente, él tenía un reino pero “no aquí” toma un nuevo significado con la visión cósmica de Daniel sirviendo de fondo, que nos permite vislumbrar al “Anciano” en su trono celestial. Para el mes de Noviembre  Intención Universal .-Oremos para que las personas que sufren de depression o agotamiento encuentren el apoyo y que 

la luz les abra los ojos y sane el  Corazon de la vida. 

SABIAS QUE? A medida que entramos en la temporada navideña, durante la cual muchos de nosotros pasaremos tiempo con familiares y amistades, los padres de familia deben recordar prestar atención a los niveles de comodidad de sus hijos, especialmente cuando se trata de afecto físico. Queremos que nuestros hijos sean amables y considerados, por eso es tentador pedirles que den abrazos y besos a familiares y amigos. Pero cuando los niños están nerviosos o son tímidos, o sim-plemente no quieren, es importante respetar sus límites personales y les enseña una gran lección sobre el consentimiento de quién inter-actúa con ellos y con sus cuerpos. Los padres de familia pueden sugerir alternativas, como el “high-five” o chocar mano con mano, o chocar los con los puños.
