SAINT RITA OF CASCIA CHURCH  3

REV. MSGR. RICHARD KREKELBERG

Dear Parishioners and Visitors,

Calming our StormsFrom Today’s Gospel—

 The disciples:“TEACHER, DO YOU NOT

CARE THAT WE AREPERISHING?”

 Jesus:“WHY ARE YOU TERRIFIED?

DO YOU NOT YET HAVEFAITH?”

Truly, Jesus’ calming of the storm isa precious image to all of us. “Jesus, please calm the storm of mybesieged family.” (There were a lotof those prayers left at our Shrine ofSt. Rita this past Feast Day.) “Jesus, please calm the storm of ourterrorized, high-tech war-torn

world.” “Jesus, please calm the seasof the human body politic thatgenerates fear and discontent here inour country and around the world.” —Or, what’s the particular stormyou want Jesus to calm and say BESTILL! But if we want to applytoday’s gospel image to our currentstorms, then we have to apply hisresponse as well: “Why are youterrified? Do you not yet havefaith?”

Don’t you just hate it when life is anabsolute mess and someone (likeme) says, “Just have faith”? It seemslike such a lame answer. It seemslike, I just told you that my life is in

the toilet and all you had to say was“Just smile and flush it.” I guess thefeeling is that there just has to besomething more to Jesus’ ownresponse—and of course, there is. After all, Jesus did command andthe storm and seas did calm down.

You could say, that for those who were the victims of slavery in thesouth, most of the sea is calmed(certainly not by the wave of a wand). Or, name your choice ofdisaster or human tragedy of the lastdecade, and there will be elements offirst responders and enduringhelping hands that represent somedegree or some form of calming. Tocarry the point further, imagine thatmoment or moments when calmcomes to someone who has beendiagnosed with a life-threateningdisease or, perhaps, after a 7.1earthquake. My experience as apriest is that all calming comes only when faith, hope, and love kick in. And all too often, in the face ofpanic with a family, my parish, afriend, or myself, I too ask, “Do you(I) still not have faith?”

So what is this faith?

Biblically and religiously, theanswer is: the faith that Jesus theRedeemer and Savior remains withus at all times and in all situations;

the faith that just when we are trulysorry for our sins and commit toamend, our sins are truly forgiven;and the faith that, if the ultimatehappens, the doors of heaven areopen to us (you know, “the betterplace”).

But the practical answer is:  thefaith, hope, and love enough to bethere for the other person orpersons in their time of need.Remember the Gospel man “whofell in with robbers”? Calm came tohis storm when a man of faith andhope simply loved and saved him— the Good Samaritan. It’s always thesame. How many times does ithappen, though, that the victim, theperson in the hospital bed, for

instance, is the one who has thefaith, and the one who winds upcalming everybody else downaround him or her? Think about it.

I am convinced, and as a friend ofmine likes to say, “I am unanimousin this!” that God means for us tocalm each other’s storms with thepower of faith, hope, and love that we were baptized with. We arecalled to calm each other’s fears withour faith. We have the God-given

power within us to say BE STILL!

 —Msgr. Richard

Saint of the Week

St. John Fisher

1469-1535

John Fisher is usuallyassociated with Erasmus, Thomas More and other Renaissancehumanists. He was a man of learning, associated with the intellectuals andpolitical leaders of his day. He was anaccomplished preacher and writer andeventually became chancellor atCambridge. He was made a bishop at35, and one of his interests was raisingthe standard of preaching in England. With the coming of Lutheranism, he was drawn into controversy. His eightbooks against heresy gave him a leading

position among European theologians.

In 1521 he was asked to studythe question of Henry VIII’s marriage. He incurred Henry’s anger by defendingthe validity of the king’s marriage withCatherine of Aragon and later byrejecting Henry’s claim to be thesupreme head of the Church ofEngland.

In an attempt to be rid of him, Henrysummoned John who was in feeble

health, to take the oath to the new Actof Succession. He and Thomas Morerefused because the Act presumed thelegality of Henry’s divorce and his claimto be head of the English Church. They were sent to the Tower of London, where Fisher remained 14 months wi thout tr ia l. They were fina ll ysentenced to life imprisonment.

When the two were called to furtherinterrogations, they remained silent.Fisher was tricked, on the supposition

he was speaking privately as a priest, and declared again that the king was notsupreme head. The king had himbrought to trial on the charge of hightreason. He was condemned andexecuted, his body left to lie all day onthe scaffold and his head hung onLondon Bridge. More was executed two weeks later.

Q: My neighbors are asking me about what is happening atSt. Rita. I wasn’t able to attend any of the Town Hallmeetings so am not sure what to tell them. What is thebest way to answer their questions?

A: Good news! We will be having at least one more TownHall meeting—probably this summer. Watch theBulletin for date and time and please invite yourneighbors to attend with you. In the meantime, let yourneighbors know that we are not increasing the size ofour school. Phase One of our Master Plan calls for usto renovate our church and Msgr. Gara Hall, and tobuild a new building to house meeting space and a youthcenter. Later phases will relocate our ministry andparish offices and replace school buildings withbuildings that are seismically sound, energy efficient andproviding a better environment for learning.
