TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14 God became very angry with the Israelites for worshiping a molten calf and making sacrifices to it. The people had so quickly violated his commandments that he planned to destroy them. But Moses pleaded with God for mercy and God relented. Second Reading: 1 Timothy 1:12-17 Paul considered himself a former blasphemer and persecutor, and expressed his gratitude for the mercy Jesus showed him. Paul felt that he was a perfect example of Jesus' patience toward sinners and his desire to reconcile them with God. Gospel: Luke 15:1-32 The Pharisees grew angry because of the Jesus' compassion toward sinners. In response, Jesus tells of a son who squandered his inheritance, then returned to his father and asked to be treated as a hired hand. The father rejoiced, angering his older and more obedient son. The father explained that everything he owned belonged to his older son; but he had to rejoice for the son who was lost and had been found. Dear Msgr. Puleo and St. Elizabeth-St. Brigid Parish, On behalf of the SMA Fathers, I would like to sincerely thank you for the warm welcome and hospitality afforded our missionary work. We are grateful for the opportunity to share our mission, to spread the Gospel in Africa and among the African peoples, with congregation of your parish. Your welcome allowed us to raise $5,100 to continue this mission of evangelization. With your support we can continue spreading the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ to the neediest people of Africa. God bless and keep you. May his light shine upon you. Rev. Anthony K. Kroir SMA

SPREADING THE WORD

“Everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:33 When we first hear this statement, it seems that Jesus is making an unrealistic demand upon us. How can we renounce all of our possessions? We need them to live. However, what we must renounce is the belief that they belong to us. Everything that we have belongs to God alone. All of our resources are entrusted to us not only for our own use, but also so that we can help others. Once we renounce the idea that we possess or are entitled to anything, it is much easier to share the many gifts that God has given us. Then we truly are His Disciples.

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION

Month Four ~ “I had a dream today!” Thank you for praying for me. I’m

bigger and stronger now. I’m about 6 inches long and I weigh 4 ounces. When Mommy goes to the doctor, she can even listen to my heartbeat! I hope that one day I will run and play with friends like you.

Well, your little baby now weighs six ounces. She has fingernails and eyelashes. She has her own unique fingerprints, which will remain the same until she dies. Her taste buds are working. Her sense of hearing is developing and present at 14 weeks. There are no major developments anymore. At this month rapid eye movement (REMs) can be detected—a sign of dreaming. Your spiritually adopted baby is already well formed, internally and externally. All she needs now is time to gain weight and grow strong. What a miracle she is!

Please remember to pray Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen’s prayer for those children yet to be born

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn child that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.

PRAYER FOR OUR COUNTRY AT ELECTION TIME Loving God and Father,

watch over our country in these times of confusion and apathy.

Keep us caressed in your merciful care, even though we have failed to remain vigilant, in respecting human life from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death;

in recognizing all people as equal; in recognizing the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Remain with us, Lord, in the days ahead. Protect us in our greatest needs.

Protect our protectors in their military service. Protect our families; our neighborhoods;

our cities, towns, states and nation. May our flag fly high

and our prayers even higher, reaching the One who loves us the most -

to keep us safe and secure for the spiritual battles yet to be won.

Give us leaders in our country who, we pray, will respond generously

to your Divine Providence, for the greater good of all men and women who live in our land,

and for all generations to come.

Through Christ Our Lord, Amen. By Reverend John G. Hillier
