St. Elizabeth-St. Brigid ~ October 26-November 1, 2014 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Exodus 22:20-26 This passage from the book of Exodus enjoins all to adhere to specific religious and social laws. It urges all to act with justice and compassion towards others. Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:5c-10 Paul praises the Thessalonians for receiving the word of God so eagerly and totally. Word of their faithfulness has spread throughout Macedonia and Greece; they have become a model for all Christians. Gospel: Matthew 22:34-40 Matthew recounts the incident in which a lawyer, seeking to entrap Jesus, asks, “Teacher, which commandment of the law is the greatest?” With simplicity and authority, Jesus responds that the first commandment is to love God with one’s entire being; the second is to love one’s neighbor as oneself.

“Whoever sacrifices to any god, save to the Lord only, shall be utterly destroyed.” –

Exodus 22:20

Do you put other “gods” before God? Is your love of money, power, status or some personal possession greater than your love for God? If so, you may want to pay attention to the scripture reading because you are not going to like the outcome. The good news – it’s not too late to put God first in your life.

ACT NOW TO STOP ASSISTED SUICIDE IN

NJ – VOTE NO ON A2270 A2270, a bill allowing assisted suicide, was released by the NJ Assembly Health and Senior Services Committee and could be posted for a vote in the full Assembly at any time. This bill would allow a person who has a terminal disease to request a prescription from a physician for lethal drugs that would end their life. Terminal disease is defined in the bill as an incurable and irreversible disease that has been medically confirmed and will, within reasonable medical judgment, result in a patient’s death. Please ask members of the Assembly to vote “NO” on A2270 if it is posted for a vote in the Assembly. Our duty is to assist those who are dying – not kill them. Go to https://voterschoice.net/NJCC/home to contact your legislators.

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION UPDATE Month Five – “Mommy felt me kick today!”

I am 5 months old now. I’m 12 inches long and I weigh about one pound. I

am really getting big and mommy can now feel me kick and move around!

Hey! Someday maybe I’ll play soccer! Thank you for praying for me! Your spiritually adopted baby weighs over one pound now, and his mother can feel his movement. Before this time he was too small for her to feel. Although he swam with ease in his watery world, he needed to be big and strong enough to kick hard against the outside wall and dent it – the inside wall of the uterus has little feeling. We are mid-way through the pregnancy now. Your prayers have helped your baby’s mother continue with her pregnancy and seek the help she needs.

Prayer for All Human Life God of infinite love,

open wide our hearts and minds that we might be

worthy advocates for the voiceless and vulnerable. Give us the courage of will

to remain vigilant to the unborn. The generosity of heart

to offer support to the sick. The constant desire

to be present to the elderly. The abundance of love

to be committed to the disabled. The perseverance to seek

and find the lost and forgotten. Lord and Giver of life,

in your love and mercy, keep us safe in your care

as we strive to offer comfort to others in your name. May we always keep before us

the challenge to recognize the face of Jesus

in all those we meet. Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.
