World Mission Sunday The Society for the Propagation of the
Faith is the Holy Father’s chief missionary arm, providing resources for more than 1,150 mission dioceses the world over. Through their efforts the
love of Christ touches the hearts of countless people in every region of the world. Grants from the Collection for
Latin America provide catechetical and lay leadership programs, youth ministry,
evangelization projects, as well as formation programs for religious,
priests, and deacons. The Collection to Aid the Church in Central and Eastern Europe supports seminarians, social
service programs, youth ministry, pastoral centers, church restoration and spreading the Gospel message through
the media.

Living Water: The Story of St. Gabriel the Archangel Church
St. Norbert College is pleased to announce a presentation of Still Point Theatre Collective’s new play, Living Water:
The Story of St. Gabriel the Archangel Church. This inspiring theatrical piece tells the real life resurrection story of a
New Orleans parish that banded together to rebuild their church and their neighborhood after the massive
devastation of the post-Katrina floods of 2005. Based on interviews with pastoral leaders and parishioners, the
presentation integrates music and liturgical elements as it conveys this real-life resurrection story. The play will
take place on Tuesday, October 22nd at 6:30 PM in Walter Theater, St. Norbert College, 100 Grant St., De Pere, WI.

Fr. Matt’s Corner: . . . The Lord has revealed to the nations His saving power . . .
Greetings to you, my dear friends in Christ. I wonder how often we stop to recognize the presence of God in our lives right here in northern Wisconsin. Sometimes we can easily see God’s goodness to us – in a peaceful moment during a beautiful autumn sunset, in a tree stand, holding our grandchild, watching our children strive and achieve greatness, pausing to pray before a scrumptious dinner, seeing the Cardinals advance to the NLCS or the Packers beating the Lions, visiting a friend, and so many other blessed times.
But sometimes, God’s presence is not so clear, and His blessings for us may not come in the way we would have chosen or expected. I might be tempted to say, “Excuse me God, but I think You made a mistake here. What You should have done is …”
I’m reminded of a little story of the man caught on his rooftop during a deadly flood. He cried out – asking God to come and save him. God then told the man that He would indeed come and would rescue him. Shortly thereafter, a rowboat came by, and the oarsman invited the man to hop in and come to safety. The man responded, “No, thank you. God is coming to get me.” A short time later, a helicopter came by and lowered a ladder, and the pilot instructed the man to grab hold and ride to safety, but the man again refused, saying, “Nope, God Himself said that He would come to get me.”
Finally, the waters rose too high, and the man drowned. When he saw God, he complained bitterly, “I thought You were coming to rescue me!” The Lord responded, “Well, I sent you the boat and the helicopter, but you refused … what more should I have done?” In the account of Naaman the Syrian, God’s prophet Elisha had told Naaman to go wash in the Jordan seven times in order to be healed of leprosy. Naaman – thinking that God wouldn’t work that way – complained that there were better rivers than the Jordan. But he finally consented, and went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times at the word of Elisha, the man of God. His flesh became again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean of his leprosy.
What we see is that Elisha’s command did not make sense to Naaman, but in the end, Naaman obeyed and – true to His word – God healed him. Sometimes, what the Catholic Church teaches might not be understood by some – it may even seem like nonsense. But the same thing happens today as in Elisha’s time: God keeps His word that is given through the Barque (Boat) of Peter. Those seven Sacraments really do what God says they will do – they reveal to the nations (and to us) His saving power. For This saying is trustworthy: If we have died with him we shall also live with him; if we persevere we shall also reign with him. But if we deny him he will deny us. If we are unfaithful he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.

Ask Father:
This week’s question: Why is Pontius Pilate named in our Creed?
Another great question comes to us this week – one that shows that you’ve prayed the Creed attentively (not just
plowing through the words). As such, I’ll attempt to give an equally attentive response, and, as always, it will be a pleasure to
do so. So, as always, thanks for asking!
The Creed – and I should point out that for true Christians, there are different forms of the Creed (Apostles’ Creed, Nicene Creed, Calcedonian Creed, and Athanasian Creed) – is a memorizable, shorthand version of the Truths of our Faith. It’s a little like an acorn in that it’s small and compact, yet when we study it and allow it to open up, we eventually find that it contains a huge majestic tree. When a person is baptized, she is given the Creed (which should be memorized) as a way to know the Faith into which we are baptized. Because it is meant to be short and memorized, there is no extra ‘fluff’ inserted; every word is crucial. There are five persons named in our Creed. Three of these Persons are God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), one is the Mother of God (Mary), and the fifth – as you’ve pointed out – is Pontius Pilate. So, you may be saying, “I can see why we mention God the Father; I understand why we identify God the Son; I get the need to name God the Holy Spirit – those three are God. But why Mary and Pontius? Are they so absolutely indispensable that they must be in the Creed?” Here’s the thing: what makes Christianity so very different from every other religion in the history of the world is our faith in the fact that God became man in the One Person Jesus Christ. Think about it … of all the million billions of persons in the whole history of the world, our faith centers on One single Person. Not only that, but this One Person entered human history at one single moment. Everything hinges on this one time and place and the particular individuals involved. Another way of saying this is that Christianity is not primarily a philosophy or a way of life; rather, Christianity is first and foremost a Church who connects us with the Person Who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. We mention Mary in the Creed because she is the particular woman through whom the Son of God came to us. It was her DNA that developed his particular human characteristics. We mention Pontius Pilate because he is the particular person in our history who oversaw the crucifixion of the Son of God – an actual historical fact that changed both the meaning and the fate of the entire universe. Christianity is based on these historical factual events – and that’s why these particular historical real persons are recalled in our Creed. Thanks for another great question.
