KAIROS PRISON MINISTRY

COOKIES & PRAYER VIGIL The St. Anthony Prison Ministry is supporting the

November 2-5, 2017 Kairos Prison Ministry weekend at Tyger River Correctional Institution in

Spartanburg County. During the weekend, a Ministry Team will present a short course on Christianity to 24-30 prisoners selected by the

warden, and distribute cookies each day to over 1,000 inmates. St. Anthony Prison Ministry members will participate by helping to organize a round-the-

clock prayer vigil to support the weekend and by helping in an area-wide effort to obtain thousands of

homemade cookies. Parishioners are invited to participate by signing up to pray in support of the weekend during one of the designated time slots, and/or by baking cookies to send into the prison

with the Kairos Team. The acceptable cookies include chocolate chip, oatmeal, peanut butter, molasses, ginger and sugar cookies. (No nuts,

raisins or icing) Cookies should be between 2 and 2 ½ inches in diameter. Cookies should be brought

to the social hall on Sunday, October 29, 2017 no later than the beginning of the 12 Noon Mass.

A Prayer Vigil Sign-up Sheet is located in the church lobby. Included here is a site whereby parishioners may select a time to pray. It is not necessary to pray for an hour but earnest prayer should give thought

and devotion for those experiencing Tyger River #26.

STEWARDSHIP Is Tithing like Tailoring?

Garments often need tailoring. The wedding garment in Mt 22: 12 represents the repentance, the

change of heart necessary for entrance into the kingdom. What change of heart, what tailoring do

we need - especially regarding our finances and tithing? Whatever it is, God will supply our need.

We can do it. We can do all things in Christ.

PRAYER OF THE WEEK Shine Through Me

Dear Jesus, help me to spread Your fragrance everywhere I go. Penetrate and possess my whole

being so utterly that all my life may only be a radiance of Yours. Shine through me and be so in

me, that every soul I come in contact with may feel Your Presence in my soul: let them look up and see no longer me--but only Jesus. ~Saint John Neuman

SAINT OF THE WEEK

Saint Teresa of Avila

October 15. Saint Teresa of Avila lived before and during the Council of Trent. Having experienced the

Reformation, she felt a need for reform, but took things in a different direction than the Protestants.

Teresa set an example for present day reformers.

WEEKLY REFLECTION 'Abundant Blessings'

...how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?

- Luke 11:13

Often I hear the cry, "If God is with me, why does he not answer my prayer?" Parents with suffering

children, victims of violence, people with devastating illnesses all cry to God for help.

Some turn away from God in anger; others persevere in faith.

Such agonizing moments deserve more than a

simplistic response. These can inflame more than quell spirits in pain. Human suffering deserves to be

fully acknowledged and peoples' losses grieved. Jesus himself does not give a simple answer. But he

does assure us that if we ask, we will receive the Holy Spirit. This is likely not what we asked for, but more than we could imagine. The Spirit will sustain

us in our sufferings and, moreover, provide unrequested, abundant blessings.

Lord, in our great need, send us your Spirit. In your

overflowing generosity, may this Spirit give us strength to endure and a taste of your infinite

blessings.

- Msgr. Stephen J. Rossetti
