OUR MISSIONSaint Anthony of Padua Parish is a welcoming, loving Catholic community, centered in Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit.
Together we celebrate the liturgy in prayer and sacrament; we educate our children and adults in the faith; we support and reach out to those in need.
We believe the Holy Spirit is calling us to con-tinue: to love one another as Jesus loves us, to share the word of God and to serve both within and beyond our Parish family.

Observances for the Week of May 8, 2016 Sunday: Ascension Sunday; Mother’s Day Tuesday: Damien de Veuster, Priest; Día de la Madre Thursday: Nereus and Achilleus, Martyrs; Pancras, Martyr Friday: Our Lady of Fatima Saturday: Matthias, Apostle Next Sunday: Pentecost
The Ascension of the Lord
“They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy.” Jesus had just left the disciples. In a dramatic and supernatural moment, he had bid them farewell and then “was taken up to heaven.” One might think this departure would have left the disciples feeling very melancholy, but apparently it was not so. They were full of joy as they went back to the city where Jesus had told them to stay, “until you are clothed with power from on high.”
This, of course, is a reference to the coming of the Holy Spirit that would happen soon enough at Pentecost. But the disciples did not know the details. They only knew that Jesus was promising them the “Advocate” and some amazing power from heaven, and sending them off with a great mission to preach “repentance, for the forgiveness of sins... to all the na-tions.” And this filled them with joy, even while they waited.
What we often need to remind ourselves is that after the Ascension, the disciples were in a very similar position to us. They were no longer in the physical presence of Jesus. They no longer walked with him, watched him, or heard his voice. Now, carrying on the work of the Gospel was up to them. And so too, now it is up to us. The mission of preaching the good news to all the nations is our mission. And, thankfully, the powerful “clothing” from on high is ours as well.
So, like the disciples we have cause for rejoicing. Jesus reigns in heaven. His Spirit has come upon us. And we are en-trusted with the most noble and rewarding task of all, to share our faith with others and bring them to experience the joys of belonging to the kingdom of God.

Summary of the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love) from Pope Francis Chapter three: “Looking to Jesus: The vocation of the family” (58-88) The third chapter is dedicated to some essential elements of the Church’s teaching on marriage and the family. This chapter is important because its 30 paragraphs concisely depict the vocation of the family according to the Gospel and as affirmed by the Church over time. Above all, it stresses the themes of indissolubility, the sacramental nature of marriage, the transmission of life and the education of children. The Vatican Council II document Gaudium et Spes is widely quoted, along with Paul VI's Humanae Vitae, and St. John Paul II's Familiaris Consortio. The chapter provides a broad view and touches on “imperfect situations” as well. We can read, in fact: "Discernment of the presence of ‘seeds of the Word’ in other cultures can also apply to the reality of marriage and the family. In addition to true natural marriage, positive elements exist in the forms of marriage found in other religious traditions’, even if, at times, obscurely”. The reflection also includes the “wounded families” about whom the Pope – quoting the Final Report of the 2015 Synod extensively – says that “it is always necessary to recall this general princi-ple: ‘Pastors must know that, for the sake of truth, they are obliged to exercise careful discernment of situations’. The degree of responsibility is not equal in all cases and factors may exist which limit the ability to make a decision. Therefore, while clearly stating the Church’s teaching, pastors are to avoid judgments that do not take into account the complexity of various situations, and they are to be attentive, by necessity, to how people experience and endure distress because of their condition”.

My good deed for this week:
Sacrificial Giving 2016
I took care of mommy while she was sick. I helped make cookies. I cleaned my room. I helped clean the floor when I spilled juice. I helped my daddy empty the dishwasher. Our class welcomed our teacher back to class after she had back surgery. I cleaned my whole house. I helped nana decorate. I made my bed. I helped teach my sister. I made dessert for Easter.
Did We Take a Step?
Today’s reading contains the somber warning that Jesus is coming soon and will bring to each person the reward that his or her conduct deserves. Has my stewardship of the blessings entrusted to me been
such that I could respond joyfully, “Amen!”?

Over the years the parishioners of St. Anthony’s have been generous in supporting the work of the Life Center, a pregnancy care center for four locations serving Long Is-land in Deer Park, Hempstead, Massapequa and River-head. We thank you for your donation last year of $6,360. The work of the Life Center is always expanding. We need your help to ensure we have the resources we need to continue to provide the level of service that our clients deserve.
The Life Center is supported entirel by charitable gifts from people like you who call Long Island home. The baby bottle campaign is one of our largest fundraisers. Msgr. Mirro has given us the opportunity to invite you to join in that campaign. As you leave church today you are asked to take home an empty baby bottle and over the next several weeks to fill it with your donation and return it to church on Father’s Day weekend, June 18th and 19th.
You will find a prayer attached to the bottle and we ask you to say that prayer often, even daily for God’s blessing on the work of the Life Center and the precious men, women and children we serve.
