• SRG Notes: Don’t let the location fool you! Also, since it’s next to the Boulder Marriott, this can be a great option for clients staying there. They have an outdoor patio as well.

Arabesque in the heart of Boulder in October 2009. The name, Arabesque, is a classical ballet position requiring a high expression of elegance and balance and is often used to judge the dancer’s level of skill. As a former ballet instructor, Manal has translated the gracefulness of form into her savory dishes.

• SRG Notes: A good example of Cultural Curiosity. Delicious food and an atmosphere that feels like you are eating in someone’s home rather than a restaurant. The small space could possibly be a problem for large groups. For your more adventurous culinary clients.

• SRG Notes: Very accommodating staff. Location can take large groups and will have an even better private dining space finished by the middle of June. A nice quiet spot with great service that is perfect for client dinners.

Black Cat

Each evening finds him in the kitchen crafting dishes on his daily changing menu. The same care goes into the restaurant’s award-winning wine list, boasting over 300 selections.

• SRG Notes: Eric is one of our Culinary Council stars and a very friendly host. Mention SRG when arriving and making reservations. As we constantly mention, this is a great example of More with Less, and Community Connected. Has received mixed reviews on service and food experiences, but the majority opinion is that it is a great place for clients. 7

Bombay Bistro

The Boulder Dushanbe Tea House

over 100 types of teas and a full bar. “This is a gift to the people of Boulder to make their souls happy...” The Tea House, which officially opened May 15, 1998, is a gift from Boulder’s sister city, Dushanbe, Tajikistan, and is the most significant and largest piece of Central Asian art and the only one of its kind in the western hemisphere. Handcrafted by over 40 Tajik artisans, the Tea House is a feast for the eyes with its vibrant colors, patterns, and furnishings. The Tea House features an eclectic international menu and teas from all over the world.

• SRG Notes: The Tea House is a fun, unique place to take clients. The service is normally quite slow, but the décor and style make up for it. This would be a great place for tea or coffee or maybe lunch, but leave dinner to a different restaurant. 9

Brasserie Ten Ten

• SRG Notes: Brasserie Ten Ten is a festive French brasserie with a great wine list, but is often too loud for large groups of clients. Service can sometimes be hit or miss. Can be very busy at lunch.

created by executive chef Ian Clark to our handcrafted cocktails, Centro is a restaurant that is fun, right down to your core. Our experienced and professional staff ensures a memorable evening as you enjoy a seat in our warm rustic dining room or at our indoor-outdoor bar while you munch on a blue-crab torta with avocado and spicy lemon or the day- long roasted chicken with hot rice salad, sweet molé, and sesame. If you are a vegetarian, try our mouth-watering chile-glazed tofu with apricot pearl couscous. And don’t forget to complement your meal with one of our amazing pisco sours or hibiscus fruit punch.

• SRG Notes: Centro is a fun, lively place for clients. Possible for large groups at their community table, just might be a bit loud. The patio is a nice option for larger parties and wonderful in the spring, summer, and fall, especially now that they have extended the awning. A great example of Cultural Curiosity. Definitely mention SRG—the head chef, Ian Clark, is a workshop regular, Culinary Council member, and married to our very own Bryce Clark. 11

Flagstaff House

Colorado’s premier dining experience. Owners Don and his sons, Mark and Scott, have created a unique fine-dining experience combining an award-winning wine list, exquisite food, and detailed service with the personal touch of a family-owned restaurant. The Flagstaff House Restaurant sits nestled on the mountainside at an elevation of 6,000 feet and was originally a cabin built in 1929. The Monette family has owned the Flagstaff House since 1971 and has greatly expanded the property, featuring floor-to-ceiling picture windows and several outside terraces.

• SRG Notes: Flagstaff House has one of the best views in Boulder and is known as one of the best restaurants. Unfortunately, the décor and style are quite outdated. It is possibly still worth a visit for the view, but other restaurants, such as Frasca, can deliver a formal dining experience with a better atmosphere. It is wonderful to head up to Flagstaff when the weather is nice so you can enjoy the food from the terrace. Old-school cuisine, GREAT wine list, very formal.

Frasca Food and Wine

cuisine and culture of Friuli, Italy. The menu changes seasonally to make the most of current harvests and the freshest produce, herbs, and spices. It favors products from the best local farmers and purveyors and reflects Friulian sensibilities about ingredients and proportion according to weather, climate, and calendar. And above all, it is Friulian. Each dish is inspired by the sophisticated flavors and international influences of the area that are at once quintessentially Italian yet unique to this extraordinary region. Frasca is the creation of master sommelier Bobby Stuckey and chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson. Their shared passion for Friuli-Venezia Giulian cuisine and fine wine is reflected in the exquisitely prepared fare and a comprehensive wine list boasting over 200 varieties.

• SRG Notes: Frasca is one of the most well-known and most respected restaurants in Boulder. Mention to the hostess that you are with SRG. Bobby Stuckey, the sommelier and part owner, is a great charmer who is on our Culinary Council. The wine list is incredible and Bobby always has a great suggestion. (The staff are all very knowledgeable as well). The full menu is $70 per person for four courses. You can also order à la carte. Appetizers are $15 each, pastas $20, and entrées $36. There is a space that can comfortably sit 8–10 people in the dining room, but any more people and we suggest looking elsewhere (or paying for a private room, which is also an option).

Hapa

• SRG Notes: Hapa is a very modern and funky sushi spot. For more conservative clients and serious sushi connoisseurs, I would suggest Sushi Tora or Kasa, but if your client is young and funky (and possibly a hipster?), Hapa is a wonderful place. Be aware that some of the names of the sushi rolls are awkwardly sexual. Service is frequently lacking.

Happy

• SRG Notes: Happy has a wonderfully eclectic menu but can sometimes be a bit too much for unadventurous eaters. But if your client is interested in global fare, this is a great spot. Mention SRG and say hi to John Mark, the Manager, as well as Mark Stoddard, the head bartender, when you arrive. I would suggest having everyone start with one of Mark’s cocktails–he is one of the best bartenders in the country and a member of our Culinary Council, as is Sam Proia, the head chef, and John Mark. Happy can accommodate large parties with plenty of notice, but has a minimum amount requirement to rent the lounge area for larger groups.

Jax Fish House

that features fresh fish flown in daily, a live raw oyster bar with up to eight different varieties of oysters on the half shell, innovative entrées, extensive wine list, creative house-made vodka-fruit infusions, local minibrews, eclectic local art, and friendly, knowledgeable staff all in a fun and funky atmosphere. Favorites include jumbo lump crab cakes with red pepper louie, fresh Alaskan king crab legs, filet mignon of ahi tuna, Alaskan halibut and New Zealand bluenose. Live Maine lobster, Florida stone crab claws, soft-shell crab and Maryland blue crab are all available in season. Come into Jax and get hooked.

• SRG Notes: Jax has some of the best fish in Boulder and is a great place for oysters. The main issue is that it is always very loud and frequently feels cramped due to its small size. Again, mention the SRG connection when making reservations. 16

Jill’s

the St. Julien Hotel in Boulder, Colorado. The cuisine is eclectic and draws its inspiration from the western Mediterranean region. The kitchen is run by award-winning chef Jason Rogers, whose culinary pedigree has led him to work with such notables as Todd English and the James Beard Foundation.

• SRG Notes: Chef Daniel Cofrades is a regular at our workshops and loves to see us in his restaurant. Tell them you are with SRG when making the reservation and have the host tell Daniel that you are in the restaurant. He will normally make a special visit and/or send out a special dish.

John’s Restaurant

award-winning restaurant, that opened in 1975. John’s serves classic and contemporary dishes that blend French, Italian, Spanish, and American cuisines with skill and finesse. Dishes may appear on the menu inspired by influences of the American Southwest, Louisiana, Caribbean, and Asia.

• SRG Notes: John’s is a very small, intimate restaurant. Tell them that you are with SRG when making the reservation. They will do whatever it takes to fit your needs and always show wonderful gratitude for our business. They do not have a bar in the restaurant – all alcohol is table service.

Kasa Japanese Grill and Bar

• Short Description: Kasa Japanese Grill and Bar is a yakitoria, featuring specially prepared skewers of meats and vegetables. Kasa is proud to introduce old family recipes into their sauce repertoire. All of their sauces and dips for yakitori are made from scratch. They also feature prestigious quality meats and organic vegetables, as well as the use of an expensive charcoal called binchotan, highly prized and used by top chefs to emphasize the taste of the yakitori.

• SRG Notes: Very friendly owners and excellent sushi.

The Kitchen

• SRG Notes: The Kitchen is a great example of Community Connected. The community table in the downstairs portion is the best bet for large groups, yet can be a small issue because it is a long rectangle and prevents the whole group from interacting. Monday nights are community nights and the large table is unavailable. I would not suggest trying to fit a group larger than six upstairs as it can be loud and the layout would be too crowded. They have a great wine list and great food. 20

L’Atelier

• SRG Notes: L’Atelier is a very formal eating experience. The room toward the front thatis surrounded in red glass is the best bet forlarge parties. Chef Radek is a character, enjoy!

• SRG Notes: Can easily hold large parties. The move to the 29th Street Mall has caused this restaurant to lose some of its independent/unique feel.

• SRG Notes: Great for any dietary restrictions, and the food is so delicious that even your carnivorous clients will be happy.

Lucile’s Creole Café

Come on in and enjoy a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice or a cup of Southern Louisiana-style chicory coffee. Try the beignets—New Orleans-style donuts served hot and sprinkled with powdered sugar.

• SRG Notes: Lucile’s is a Boulder favorite with lines out the door on the weekends. During weekdays it is significantly less cramped, but is still very crowded in the adorable little house. This is a restaurant that is worth a visit for the experience—unique and cute, but often crowded and loud. An excellent place to take a very Southern client!24

Mateo

• SRG Notes: Mateo has had a variety of chefs in the past few years and has found one who really works in Kelly Kingsford. The dishes are wonderful and the wine list is great. The patio is nice during the summer and is tucked away. Service can sometimes be hit or miss.

The Med

locally owned Med has been offering a menu that brims with Italian, Spanish, French, and Greek cuisine. The extensive menu boasts tapas, fresh salads and seafood, paella, pastas, grilled and organic specialties, wood-oven pizzas, and house-made desserts. Over 40 wines by the glass and lively tapas hour every day from 3:00 to 6:30. Open daily at 11 a.m.

• SRG Notes: A very busy and bustling restaurant with impressive popularity. It has grown significantly in the past years and can sometimes have a chain restaurant feel to it. The Med has a huge menu that will appeal to all—the food court of Boulder restaurants. It has won many awards and has one of the most extensive happy hours in Boulder (until 6:30).

Mountain Sun Pub and Brewery

in October 1993. The inspiration was the thriving pub and microbrew scene of Oregon. Their beers have won medals across the globe, including six gold medals at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, the world’s largest beer festival.

• SRG Notes: The Mountain Sun has a very casual and pub-like atmosphere. Their great beer would be a draw for easygoing clients who are into microbrews. There is often a crowd and long wait to get a table, live music, and a lot of noise. While waiting for a table, it can sometimes be uncomfortable as the entire crowd is cornered into a small space by the busy bar. The Mountain Sun does showcase the hippie, outdoorsy, beer-loving side of Boulder. The head brewer and owner are members of the Culinary Council and came to SRG to give a beer-making presentation last summer. 27

backdrop with Boulder’s hip and contemporary dining scene, Oak at Fourteenth is a stylish neighborhood restaurant featuring local and seasonal new American cuisine in a friendly and professional atmosphere. Chef/owner Steven Redzikowski’s seasonally inspired menus are focused around Oak’s one-of-a-kind oak-fired oven and grill and offer selections from Colorado’s abundant agricultural landscape. Oak is proud to feature locally grown vegetables, locally sourced meats, sustainably raised seafood, and house-made pastas. Oak also offers a variety of creative hand-crafted cocktails and hand-selected artisan wines and beers that are the perfect addition to every element of our cuisine.

• SRG Notes: Oak had a wonderful opening with a great menu, great wine, and great cocktails. Unfortunately, they had a fire that closed them down on March 9. They should be reopening soon. Head bartender and owner Bryan Dayton (formerly head bartender at Frasca) and manager/owner Annie Polk are both members of our Culinary Council.

We seek inspiration from Colorado and other states and regions to ensure reliable sources of top-quality producers and artisans, utilizing both common and more modest ingredients such as wild herbs, and foraged produce and mushrooms, in new and distinctive contexts. Any craft relies on the process as much as the end result, so making our own cheeses, breads, pickles, charcuterie, smoking our own meats, and making our preserves seasonally is an important aspect of who we are.

• SRG Notes: The Pinyon is a new restaurant to the Boulder scene and a great one to try out. There have been mixed reviews on food, but as they work out some of the kinks, it is constantly improving. Head chef Theo Adley is a member of our Culinary Council. 29

(read: incredibly fancy) prosciutto slicer in North America.

• SRG Notes: Pizzeria Locale is a fun and festive restaurant done with a Napoli flair. There have been mixed reviews on the pizza and there is no happy hour, but the wine list is impressive and the atmosphere is fun. Not great for large parties.

• SRG Notes: Q’s is a wonderful place for clients. The wine list is impressive and the food is always fantastic. For parties of 8–10 the main dining room is wonderful and for even larger parties, the “porch” is a perfect fit. Head chef and owner John Platt as well as the wine director Sarah Moore are on the Culinary Council. You can rent a private room and have Q’s service for meetings (great service and AV equipment available). Mention that you are with SRG when making reservations.

• SRG Notes: Radda has wonderful hustle and bustle during the evenings, but can be very loud. Good food (although there have been mixed reviews), but be wary of noise levels. The patio has beautiful Flatirons views. The owner, Matthew Jansen, also owns Mateo and is a member of the Culinary Council.

Broadway, 4580 is a great mix of casual urban sophistication. Everyone who walks through our doors is our valued guest and many of you have become our valued friends. The restaurant and bar are surrounded by walls of windows on three sides, offering guests stunning views of the foothills and beyond.

• SRG Notes: Martin, the owner, is very friendly and outgoing. Mention that you are with SRG when making reservations. The private dining room is wonderful for any group, up to 30 people! 4580 has probably the best gluten-free options in Boulder. Martin can be quite chatty, but has wonderful intentions and will do whatever it takes to give you what you need. There have been some mixed reviews on the food and the service, but generally it is very good. Martin is on the Culinary Council, as is the bartender, Michael Crouch.

• SRG Notes: Bradford is a member of the Culinary Council and is very personable. Evan Faber, the beverage director and manager, is also on the council. They have become known for their unique cocktail program (you pick ingredients from a list). For larger parties, ask to reserve the entire lounge area downstairs. If it is not available, we suggest looking into other restaurants as the top floor can be too loud and crowded for a large group.
