A river by any other name In our last issue of Kingsmill Current, we announced our exclusive "Name the Lazy River" contest. Over 180 avid readers (and talented writers!) submitted clever name entries, but only one could be the winner.

When the River Pool Complex reopens for the season on Friday, May 26, we invite you to come say hello to the…Lazy James.

Congratulations to Sarah Poole from Easton, Maryland, author of the Lazy James and winner of our "Name the Lazy River" contest. We'd also like to give a shout-out to two other front-running submissions: Kingsanity Rapids and Relaxing Rapids.

Hi!I'm Lazy James

Try this Kingsmill Gardening Hack Want to pass on the pesticides but still get a gorgeous garden this year? The Kingsmill Landscape Team walks you through the must-try technique for Spring…SOLARIZATION.

"Solarization, as its name implies, uses the sun's energy to kill soil-dwelling organisms—including unwanted plants (bermudagrass), insects (grubs) and fungi (too many to mention)—that would otherwise overgrow, eat or infect a new garden," says Josh Despinis, Landscape Superintendent.

Although this technique is a go-to for the Kingsmill landscaping pros, the process is easy and inexpensive enough for homeowners to tackle on their own. Here's how:

Water the future garden area well

Lay a piece of clear painter's plastic over it

Seal the borders of the plastic with soil bags or other heavy objects

Wait for the sun's rays to do the hard work

Just like a car's interior, the sun will heat the plastic-sealed ground, getting hot enough to destroy plant parts (seeds, rhizomes and tubers), insects (both eggs and adults) and other harmful microbes. The soil should be sterilized when it reaches approximately 130-degrees Fahrenheit at a depth of about three inches. You can use a spare digital cooking thermometer to measure the temperature—just realize that the process takes a few weeks to complete.

If you're not keen on giant sheets of plastic laying across your yard for weeks at a time, pick less visible areas to give solarization a try (maybe in containers?). This way, you can grow a resort-worthy garden right at home to enjoy all season long.

Golf America's Most Historic 177 Yards

When you play Kingsmill Resort's River Course, you are truly following in the footsteps of legends—both in the game of golf and from our country's earliest history.

The course's 177-yard 17th hole stands squarely on the site where Jamestown's settlers first made landfall in 1607 (before moving one mile upriver to establish their new home in Jamestown).

Some of the area's rich past still remains, evidenced by the crumbled foundation of a pre-1776 colonial pub, remnants of a fort

from the American Revolution (that was put back into use during the War Between the States) and pilings in the river marking the original port at Burwell’s Landing. A Civil War cannon and flag still stand sentinel to mark this historic location.

Fast-forward to modern times and the River Course, host to 35 years of LPGA and PGA tournaments. There are even more living legends that have used Kingsmill as their stomping grounds. Former Presidents Clinton, Bush (43) and Obama all visited the resort to meet, relax, work and rehearse for big debates.

Want to write your own history on Kingsmill Resort's hallowed ground? Start planning your getaway today.

golf instruction

5

Using technology for better results Golf instruction traditionally involved a lot of guesswork. Students would describe their strengths, weaknesses and flaws (not always accurately), then instructors would try to visually assess their students (but it was easy to overlook subtle issues).

Fortunately, technology has come to the rescue. And Kingsmill's highly acclaimed Golf Academy has invested in best-in-class devices to help players improve every aspect of their game.

“Technology has helped us as instructors, and it has helped our students as they progress,” says Chris George, head instructor for the academy, which ranked among Golf magazine's Top 25 Golf Schools in America. George himself was named the #1 golf pro in Virginia in Golf Digest's 50 Best Teachers in America. “The best part is that [technology] eliminates the guesswork—it’s all data now.”

Take the TrackMan. This highly accurate monitor uses defense industry technology to track a player's swing—including attack angle, club path and face angle at impact, as

well as what the ball does after leaving the club—such as flight path, speed, spin and distance. TrackMan allows instructors to determine what's really going on, especially when used in conjunction with another technological marvel—the K-Vest.

“Let’s say a student comes in and wants to drive it farther,” says George. “We put them on the TrackMan, see that their path and ball flight is good, so the question becomes how can we get more ball speed without losing consistency? We move on to the K-Vest to see if they have a good kinetic sequence, and how we can improve it.”

For the short game, instructors can use the Cleveland Golf Wedge Analyzer powered by Swingbyte to match students to their perfect club. A tiny device called a SkyPro clips onto the shaft and records precise data to improve chipping. (Works for putting too!)

Of course, students can boost these instructional benefits with video. “We want to see on-course footage, which is easy to get with a smartphone,” says George. “Once received, we can instantly send drills with voiceover comments. A student may only be here for three days, but we want to keep helping them improve. Through video, we can work on drills the rest of the year.”

a wedding For Every Taste Style

Kingsmill Resort is the riverside wedding destination where every bride's Pinterest board can come to life. "We can do whatever you can imagine," says Sarah Pease, Kingsmill Resort's lead wedding planner and "I do" dream-maker.

The resort has played host to ceremonies and receptions that run the gamut from Southern-style to Indian to Moroccan, and pulled off such personalized themes as Disney, Avatar, Star Wars and even the Big Top.

Since a wedding is all in the details, Pease and her team have fulfilled all kinds of requests. Standouts include a Rubik's Cube cake and a T-Rex groom's cake. They've arranged for horse-drawn carriage arrivals and pyrotechnic-punctuated receptions—from fireworks over the James River timed with the cake cutting to giant sparklers lining the path from the ballroom for the couple's big exit.

Of course, every couple cares about the food, and they'll find that the options are nearly limitless. The Kingsmill menu runs 28 pages long and offers everything from filet and caviar to sandwiches and wraps, all served up any way you please—plated, buffet, family-style or in specialty stations.

The Kingsmill team also caters to the wedding couple's every need. Staff members handle the transport of gifts to cars or the honeymoon suite. An audio-visual professional will ensure the music plays flawlessly. The bride and groom receive a complimentary two-night stay— plus another complimentary one-night stay for their first anniversary (complete with another cake to celebrate!). The photo opps are endless as well—so every Kingsmill couple gains a brag-worthy wedding album.

Bottom line? Pease says, "We cater to any kind of wedding…anything you want." To get started, give her a call at 757.253.3996 or explore more right here.

No two nuptials are the same

fun fact! Some couples like to follow the Southern tradition of burying a bottle of bourbon upside down to keep

the rain away on their wedding day.

Kingsmill works hard to restore native oysters During peak season, the resort's James Landing Grille serves over 35,000 oysters, a regional staple and clear guest favorite. With sustainability in mind, Chef Emily Woodruff and her team began working with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) last year to restore the oyster population in these native waters.

She explains how it works: "We provide thousands of bushels of recycled oyster shells to CBF to be cleaned, cured and placed into huge water tanks containing millions of microscopic oyster larvae, which attach themselves to the shells. Each recycled shell can become home to dozens of baby oysters, called spat. CBF then plants these spat-on-shells in rivers and the bay to grow and expand the oyster reefs."

These oyster reefs not only facilitate the growth of new oysters, they also provide a valuable habitat for numerous other organisms. Michael Gordon, Sustainability and Risk Manager for Kingsmill Resort, adds, "We always strive to provide our guests with sustainable choices on our menu. With [the oyster shell recycling] program, we're helping to enhance and protect the water quality and diversity of life in the Chesapeake Bay, a national treasure and the nursery for the Atlantic Ocean."

Do your part! Hit the James Landing Grille this season to enjoy some oysters. For online menus and restaurant reservations, start here.

Any time can be gelato time If you think gelato is just a fancy Italian name for ice cream, think again. There are some genuine differences between these two frozen desserts. Gelato maintains a denser, silkier texture and richer flavor through a preparation process that uses a lower percentage of butterfat, higher milk-to-cream ratio, less air incorporated into the product and a slightly warmer serving temperature.

Fortunately, you have a go-to gelato spot right here at the resort. Since the summer of 2015, The Mill has been churning out house-made gelato, ice cream and sorbet for all of Kingsmill's guests and on-site restaurants.

On any given day, The Mill features six frozen desserts from a rotating collection of 20 flavors. What's being served is decided based on the season, guest requests and overall popularity. The range of flavors is incredible— from staples like vanilla and chocolate to more locally inspired specialties such as black walnut & bourbon and Virginia salted peanut & caramel to exotic tastes like tiramisu and pink grapefruit & champagne.

When asked about his secret for making the gelato guests love, Executive Pastry Chef Uwe Schluszas said, "It all comes down to using fresh ingredients, keeping it interesting and offering a good variety."

To get your frozen treat fix this season, book your spring or summer getaway online and make plans to visit The Mill.

fresh FlavorsAmazing Asparagus When Executive Chef Justin Dallinger thinks spring, he thinks asparagus. "Growing up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, I was surrounded by farms. My family had four 40-foot rows of asparagus. We'd have it daily from late April through mid-June. By the end of the season, we were just fine waiting until next year to eat it again!" Chef Justin usually likes to keep it simple by steaming fresh-picked asparagus and just adding a little salt and lemon. But he's also sharing his favorite springtime asparagus dish with Kingsmill Current readers.
