Spring Flea MarketThe Oak Lawn Senior Citizen

Council will hold a Spring FleaMarket at the Senior Center on April28th and 29th. Hours for the two dayevent are 9 am to 4 pm on Friday and 9am to 1 pm on Saturday.

Thursday April 27th will be dropoff day for those who wish to donateitems. We will accept donations from8:30 to 5 on that day. Items that can beused include pots, pans, glasses, dishes,jewelry, plants, small appliances,knick-knacks and small clean articlesof clothing. Heavy furniture orextremely large articles cannot beaccepted. Due to lack of storage spacewe CANNOT accept donations beforeApril 27th.

Over the years many people havefound collectible and valuable items toadd to their own households. Come tobrowse and come to buy!

You will be required to fill out aninformation sheet before you purchase yourbracelet. This info will be put on the PoliceDepartment computer file.

You do not have to have a medicalpr~lem to purchase one of the bracelets.The purpose of the program is to obtainvital personal information, in an efficientmanner, in case of an accident oremergency.

Oak Lawn Senior CitizenCommissioner Harriet Niemiec hasbeen selected one of the 1999 SeniorCitizens of the Year by CongressmanWilliam O. Lipinski. Harriet wasnominated by St. Louis de MontfortSenior Club. She has served on manycommittees at her church. She is aEucharist Minister, a Minister of carefor the homebound, a volunteer atChrist Hospital, and a PADS volunteerfor the homeless.

A special luncheon was recentlyheld to honor Harriet and the othernominees.

Bus Service forOak Lawn Residents

The Village of Oak LawnSeniorlHandicapped bus is availablefor Oak Lawn residents on Monday,'Thursday and Friday between the hoursof 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

To use this bus you must have aspecial Village of Oak Lawn ID buspass. If you do not have this pass, stopby the Senior Center and pick up anapplication form. When you havecompleted the form, please bring itback to the Center. A pass will bemailed to your home.

When you wish to use this busservice, you must make an appointment24 hours in advance. Monday requestswill be taken on Friday. Call forreservations between the hours of 9 a.m.and Noon the day before you wish touse the bus. The number to call is499-7090

This bus will take you anywherewithin Oak Lawn and will also go toChicago Ridge Mall.

Mild ExerciseEvery Friday morning at n a,m. a

group of men and women meet at theCenter for a mild exercise workout.

The 45 minute session consists ofstretching exercise and working musclegroups while seated in a chair or standingbehind the chair for balance.

2000 Golf leagueThe Oak Lawn Senior Center

sponsors a golf league for Oak Lawnmen, 50 years of age or older.

The league meets for twenty weeksevery Tuesday at Old Oak Country Oub,14200 South Parker Road in Lockport.League play begins Tuesday, May 2.

Players who have been in theleague before should stop by the SeniorCenter, fill out an information sheet andpay the $6.00 registration fee (up $1.00for the first time in years!).

17th, our Income Tax Volunteers wereat the Senior Center preparing otherOak Lawn residents' tax forms.

Our volunteers spent 694 hourspreparing 752 individual state and federalreturns.

Coffee Time Programs are presentedon the third Monday of each month at10 a.m. Refreshments are served at theconclusion of each program.

On Monday, August 21st, DanaSullivan, an Audiologist from SonusHealthcare Company, will present aseminar on hearing loss and hearingaids. Issues surrounding the use ofhearing aids will be discussed, including current information on the latesttechnological advancements in hearingaid development. Literature will beprovided and a question and answersession will be conducted.

group of men and women meet at theCenter for a mild exercise workout.

The 45 minute session consists ofstretching exercise and working musclegroups while seated in a chair forbalance;

Every Tuesday and Thursdaymorning from 8:30 to 9:30 an exercise

class is held at the Senior Center.

Men and women enjoy the hour

long class which consists of aerobic,

floor and stretching exercises, and also

work with weights and bands.

The class lasts for 10 weeks and

costs $12.00 for the entire session.

Participants should wear comfort

able shoes and clothing and bring a matfor floor exercises.

A new exercise session will beginon September 21st. You may register

Volunteer IncomeTax AssistanceOffered atSenior' Center

Once again, the Oak Lawn SeniorCenter is offering income tax assistancefor'senior residents of Oak Lawn.

Volunteers trained by InternalRevenue Service agents will be availableto prepare SIMPLE income tax formsfor 2000.

Once you have received all theofficial and financial statementsrequired for Federal and State IncomeTax, you may call the Center at499-0240 to arrange for an appointment.

Before you call for your appointment,be sure to have the following documents:

1. Medical receipts in proper andorganized order so we will know whatportion was reimbursed by insurance.

2. Dividend and interest statements.3. Tax forms mailed to you-Federal

NationalOsteoporosisScreening

In an effort to reduce the nationwidesuffering caused by osteoporosis andosteoporosis-related injuries, the NationalOsteoporosis Prevention Society (NOPS)has instituted a program designed toprovide facilities with osteoporosisdetection. The purpose of this programis to alleviate the suffering associatedwith osteoporosis, such as hip and backfractures. On Thursday, January 25,2001, the NOPS will be at the SeniorCenter offering screening tests. Thetests will be administered from 9 A.M.to 4 P.M. and an appointment is essential.

The test is a painless, non-invasivetest which takes approximately 5 minutes.You will need to put your hand in a smallmachine and nurses will then give youyour results..... .. .. . .

Please bring your medicare card withyou and the test will be free. Ifyou do nothave a medicare card the test will cost$20.00.

Oil Painting &Crochet Classes

The Oak Lawn Senior CitizenCommission in cooperation with theOak Lawn Park District will offer twoclasses this winter.

These classes are for Oak Lawnmen & women 50 years of age or older.

All classes are held at the OakviewSchool, 4625 W. HOth Street. Classeslast for ten weeks and the fee is $15.00for the ten week session.

Classes are scheduled to begin thethird week in February.

Circuit Breaker2001

A new law now expands the CircuitBreaker program which helps seniorcitizens pay for some prescriptionmedicines and offers rebates for rent orproperty taxes.

Right now, seniors making $16,000a year and less can take part· in theprogram. The law that takes effectJan. 1 raises the amount to $21,218 fora single person and $28,480 for a couple.Circuit Breaker participants also willhave access to medicine for a widervariety of illnesses, including cancer,glaucoma and Alzheimer's disease.

Circuit Breaker forms should be outat the end of January 2001.

Cancer ClosetEvery Friday morning a group of

dedicated women come to the Center tomake disposable absorbent pads forhomebound or wheelchair patients.These pads are available to you free ofcharge.

The Village of Oak LawnSeniorlHandicapped bus is availablefor Oak Lawn residents on Monday,Thursday and Friday between the hoursof 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

To use this bus you must have aspecial Village of Oak Lawn ill buspass. If you do not have this pass, stopby the Senior Center and pick up anapplication form. When you havecompleted the form, please bring itback to the Center. A pass will bemailed to your home.

When you wish to use this busservice, you must make an appointment24 hours in advance. Monday requestswill be taken on Friday. Call forreservations between the hours of 9 a.m.and Noon the day before you wish-touse the bus. The number to call is499-7090.

We have arranged to have Maxdrive his 25 passenger bus downtownto view the lights, window displays andshop.

The bus will leave the Center at9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December13th and return to the Center at approximately 3:30 p.m. The trip will cost$11.00 per person and you will be onyour own for shopping and lunch.

Pace Route 835 BusOak Lawn to Chicago

The Pace Suburban Bus System hascommuter service between Oak Lawnand the Palmer House.

If you wish to go downtown to theArt Institute, to shop or just to browse,this is a fast and convenient form oftransportation to downtown Chicago.

A one-way"tickeUs_$3.15,obut ifyou use your RTA Reduced Fare Card,it is half this fare.

For a schedule, stop by the Center.This bus service runs only Monday

through Friday.

RTA PassesAvailable at theSenior Center


To be eligible for this card youmust be 65 years of age or older andshow proof of age. A current driver'slicense, passport or state of Illinoisidentification card are legal forms todocument your age. The RTA requiresyour social security number and arecent 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" color photoshowing your head and shoulders. Ifyou do not have a picture, we have aPolaroid camera and will take your picture for $1.50. There is also a one dollar processing fee.

The pass enables you to travel onpublic transportation at half the regularfare. .

Coffee Time 'Programs


In December and February theCoffee Time Program will be held onthe second Monday of the month due toholidays.

On Monday December 11th, the"Vintage Revival" will entertain uswith their music. You must have a ticket to attend this program.

On Monday January 15th, we willplay bingo for prizes and also have asing-along.

On Monday February 12th, VillagePresident, Ernest F. Kolb, will be at theCenter to talk about the progress andprograms currently being offered in theVillage of Oak Lawn.

Canasta PlayersEvery Thursday aftemoon at 1:00 p:m.

a group of people meet at the Center toplay Canasta. If you would like to jointhe group but need to be refreshed onthe rules and regulations, memberswould be happy to assist you.

Morning ExerciseClass

Every Tuesday and Thursdaymorning from 8:30 to 9:30 an exerciseclass is held at the Senior Center.

Men and women enjoy the hourlong class which consists of aerobic,floor and stretching exercises, and alsowork with weights and bands.

The class lasts for 10 weeks andcosts $12.00 for the entire session.

Participants should wear comfortable shoes and clothing and bring a matfor floor exercises.

A new exercise session will beginon Tuesday, December 5th. You mayregister by calling or stopping in at theCenter.

Mild ExerciseEvery Friday morning at 11:00 a.m.

a group of men and women meet at theCenter for a mild exercise workout.

The 45 minute session consists ofstretching exercise and working musclegroups while seated in a chair forbalance.

If you would like to join the groupplease call the Senior Center at499-0240. A new ses~ion beginsDecember 15th. There is a $10.00charge for a ten-week session.

National Eye CareProject

The National Eye Care Project(NECP) is a nationwide outreachprogram designed to provide medicaleye care to the nation's disadvantagedsenior citizens.

The NECP provides referrals forU.S. citizens or legal residents, age 65or older who do not have access to anophthalmologist they have seen in thepast. Callers who meet the eligibilityrequirements are mailed the name of avolunteer ophthalmologist in theircommunity. Participating doctorsprovide medical eye examinations andtreatment for any condition or diseasediagnosed.

Qualified patients receive treatmentat no out-of-pocket expense. Doctorsaccept insurance reimbursement aspayment in full for their services.

Uninsured Patients are providedcare at no charge.
