A Fond Farewell

The NAMI MC Thrift Shop has been a fixture in our community since 1984. It has provided a place for employment to many, one employee has been with the NAMI MC Thrift Shop for over 19 years. It has been a place to volunteer and give back to the community, annually volunteers give over 5,000 hours of service a year. It has been a place where people can donate previously loved items and benefit a cause they believe in. It has also been a place where those who cannot afford to shop elsewhere can get the clothing they need.

It is with a heavy heart that NAMI MC’s Board of directors have come to the unfortunate conclusion that the NAMI MC Thrift Shop will be closing on April 23, 2016. Despite substantial efforts made on the part of the NAMI MC Board of directors, staff, and volunteers the Thrift Shop has been operating at a net loss of revenue for several years that can no longer be sustained. The cost of the Thrift Shop and all the good it does had to be weighed against other NAMI MC programs and the future of our organization. (story cont’d on page 4)

NAMI MC Program ListFrom the NAMI MC Executive Director

Dear Friends of NAMI MC,

I am personally deeply saddened by the board of directors’ recent decision to close the NAMI MC Thrift Shop. The store has accomplished a lot with the help of community partners and we’ll be sad to see it go. The closure is not due - in any way - to the hard work of NAMI MC staff, NAMI MC thrift shop staff, and our wonderful volunteers. Please help me brainstorm next steps for our great thrift shop staff members and let me know if you think of any resources that could help.

Despite the closing of the store I know NAMI MC will pull ahead with your help. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and there are so many exciting events happening!

April 25th 4:30 - 8:30 pm @ Pike & Rose Chipotle fundraiser - 50% of sales go to NAMI MCApril 30th @ Bethesda Flanagan’s Harp & Fiddle Bar - 10% of sales and $5 cover charge for the Cathy Ponton King Band goes to NAMI MCMay 5th 5 - 8 pm @ Bethesda Kendra Scott - 20% of sales go to NAMI MC. Free cupcakes & champagne and free raffle to win a $195 necklace!May 21st 9 am @ Baltimore Inner Harbor NAMI Maryland WalksJune 23rd - 26th @ Quicken Loans National Golf Tournament - Volunteer to sell concessions and see all the action for free!

I also want you all to keep a lookout in your mailboxes for our 2016 Heroes Save the Dates. I am very excited to announce that this year we will be honoring long time NBC4 News anchor, Jim Vance who has a very powerful personal story to tell. This year’s Wayne Fenton Memorial Award honoree is Thomas O’Connor, a mental health care provider who has gone above and beyond in the true spirit of Dr. Fenton. Purchase tickets and meet them in person at Heroes 2016 “Hope Starts Here” on Thursday October 6th at the Bethesda Marriott. www.namimc.org/heroes

Lastly, if you are interested in applying to be on the NAMI MC board or have someone to recommend, please e-mail Nancy Wolf at: [email protected]. New board members will be elected at our Annual Meeting on July 14th!

Warm regards,

Stephanie RosenNAMI MC Executive Director

Farewell to the NAMI MC Thrift Shop, Cont’d By Stephanie Rosen

Important Dates:April 8th – Last day for donationsApril 9th – Going out of business sales starts, 75% off everythingApril 23rd – Last day for shopping

Since 1984, the NAMI MC Thrift Shop has been a major source of funding for our programs to educate, support and advocate for all affected by mental illness. The Thrift Shop has helped sustain NAMI MC’s 23 free programs over the years. In the 1990s it provided the seed money to launch four other successful Montgomery County non-profits including Housing Unlimited, Jobs Unlimited, Cornerstone Montgomery, and Plan of Maryland. Sadly times have changed and we as an organization must change too.

The store has accomplished a lot with the help of community partners and we’ll be sad to see it go. We are deeply saddened by this decision and wish things could be different. In the meantime, please help us brainstorm next steps for our great Thrift Shop staff members. NAMI MC has arranged for a workshop to be given by the Cornerstone Montgomery Vocational Director to assist our staff in finding new employment. Please let us know if you think of any other resources that could also help.

In the meantime be sure to shop the store before Saturday April 23rd and save big!

Advocacy Day Report By Elyssa Diamond

NAMI MC participated in NAMI Maryland’s Annual Advocacy Day in Annapolis on February 25, 2016. We had a record number of participants from Montgomery County - 23! Attendees participated in a morning Legislative Briefing with NAMI Maryland, then met in small groups with their respective Delegates and Senators. Together, we visited all 32 legislators from Montgomery County! Participants used the power of their personal stories about mental health to persuade legislators to support three key pieces of legislation. Many participants had attended the NAMI Smarts for Advocacy Training at NAMI MC in February, which prepared them well for different advocacy roles.

This year’s legislative priorities as determined by NAMI Maryland included: 1) Protecting mental health funding through the “Keep the Door Open Act,” 2) Ensuring both Walk-In and Mobile Crisis Services in all counties, and 3) Ensuring that the Affordable Care Act is Implemented in Equitable Ways for People Living with Mental Illness. Jessica Honke, NAMI Maryland’s Policy and Advocacy Director, will continue to update us on the progress of these three bills. Please contact Elyssa Diamond, NAMI MC Advocacy & Latino Programs Coordinator for more information at [email protected], or (301) 949-5852, ext. 103.

Good Luck Megan!

I wish you and everyone involved with the organization only the best. It’s been such a joy and honor working with everyone here. As Garrison Keillor of the Writer’s Almanac puts it, “be well, do good work and keep in touch.” - Megan Pauly
