2013 Canada-Wide Science Fair

Team BC, comprised of 73 participants from 13 regions throughout BC and the Yukon presented projects at the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) held in Lethbridge, Alberta from May 11 to 18, 2013. Participating in three categories – junior, intermediate and senior based on school grades 7 to 12, BC and Yukon students received 8 gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze medals as well as 11 special awards and 43 scholarships for a total of $110,400. Projects included Fatal Factors - a study that researches

determining factors of prevalent diseases of today, theorizing the traits of a future superbug; Sensing the Way - a navigation device that gives the blind independent movement, greatly reducing injuries and Heated Header-Ache - a discovery that concluded soccer balls exposed to lower temperatures possess more concussive potential during a header ball.

Team BC at International Competitions

Taiwan International Science Fair

Kevala Van Volkenburg from the Northern BC

Regional Science Fair and Keltie Murdoch

from the East Kootenay Regional Science Fair

have returned home big winners from the

Taiwan International Science Fair, held

January 29th to February 5th in Taipei,

Taiwan.

Keltie received 4th place in her category for

her environmental engineering project, Geo

Air a system that circulates air through

underground pipes into a home’s heating

system greatly improving its efficiency at not

only heating but also as a cooling system

during the summer months. Kevala also

received 4th place for her project, Finding a

Better Brain Booster, a study which

demonstrated that short periods of aerobic

exercise improved student’s academic

performance in reading and mathematics in

contrast to other strategies which were much

less effective.

The students were accompanied by Ms.

Sandi Lavery, Faculty at the University of

Victoria’s Teacher Education Program in

Cranbrook, BC and Past Chair of the East

Kootenay Regional Science Fair.

Google Science Fair

Ann Makosinski, age 15, of Victoria, BC was

selected as one of four Canadian Regional

finalists for the Google Science Fair. A

student at St. Michael`s University School,

Ann represented the Vancouver Island

Region at the 2013 Canada-Wide Science

Fair winning both a gold medal and the

Energy Challenge Award for her project The

Hollow Flashlight, in which she invented and

built an innovative device that converts body

heat into light.

Ann was also chosen as one of 15

finalists to be nominated for the Scientific

American Science in Action Award. The

award honors a project that makes a

practical difference by addressing an

environmental, health or resource

challenge.

On June 27, 2013, 15 finalists will be

chosen to present their idea at the Google

Headquarters in California followed by a

celebratory event in September.

Good luck Ann!

Innovation Exploration

Hosted by the Science Fair Foundation BC and supported by BCIC, the Innovation Exploration (IE) Program provided student participants with education and career development information as they were engaged in exciting activities led by science outreach organizations and post-secondary institutions. These experiences helped them to discover opportunities available in science and technology careers. This year’s program took place in Vancouver, BC on October 25-26, 2012. Participants were the students who represented BC at the annual Canada-Wide Science Fair, the Taiwan International Science Fair and the USA Intel-International Science & Engineering Fair. They explored education programs and facilities at two post-secondary institutions, Simon Fraser University and BCIT; engaged in a fun networking activity at Telus World of Science; conducted interactive medical simulations at the Centre of Excellence for Simulation Education & Innovation (CESEI) at Vancouver General Hospital and interacted with science fair alumni at the closing dinner at The University of British Columbia’s Museum of Anthropology.

PMC Science Fair Fun Run

The 14th annual PMC Science Fair Fun Run is the

Science Fair Foundation’s largest fundraiser and

the largest timed 5K Run in BC. It was held

Sunday, May 26, 2013 and was well attended by

over 1,300 participants.

It has received generous support from Vancouver’s

leading companies and institutions including

representatives from high-tech, biotech, financial

and legal communities as well as local universities

and schools.

This year’s run raised nearly $40,000. For the past

14 years the Run has raised over $600,000 for The
