F1 Round 18 + V8 Races 24, 25 & 26 - Abu Dhabi I Introduction

It’s a credit to the crews involved that there will be a full field of V8 Supercars on the grid this weekend as the category supports the Formula 1 circus offshore for the first time.

Garry Rogers Motorsport and Kelly Racing put in the hard yards between the Armor All Gold Coast 600 and the plane leaving for Abu Dhabi in order to prepare spare cars for Alex Premat and Karl Reindler respectively. Tony D’Alberto Racing also had a big task on its hands to rebuild its crashed Falcon, while the remaining battle-weary squads still had to undertake the task of tearing down and refurbishing their cars after the punishing event.

It’s extraordinary to think that the 2013 calendar has the Surfers Paradise and Yas Marina circuits hosting V8 Supercars events on consecutive weekends. The per unit cost of a Car of the Future may turn out to be below current levels, but it’s a big ask to expect teams to have spare cars prepared to the point that they can be finished in less than a day before being packed into a container for a fly-away race.

At least this time next year the teams won’t have to deal with quite such a heavy COTF build and development program as they’re currently facing. Three teams - GRM, the Holden Racing Team and Kelly Racing - have or are expected to test their Car of the Future cars while the race crews are away in the UAE. Having separate ‘test teams’ is not something we’re all that accustomed to in Australian motorsport before, and gives a clear insight into the drain that’s currently being placed on each team’s resources.

The post-Bathurst races in the V8 Supercars Championship always have a bit of a ‘staggering the end of a long season’ feel to them. Unfortunately this year, the workload for many may not much relent over the entire off-season...

For the first time ever, this weekend in Abu Dhabi sees the Formula 1 World Championship and V8 Supercars

Championship link up outside of Australian shores.

While the format for the V8 Supercars event, slashed from the twin 200km races seen at the Yas Marina Circuit in recent years to just three 65km affairs, puts the Australian class firmly in its place as a support category, the event is still a full points paying round.

Both categories head to the Middle East at a crucial time in their seasons. Just three events remain on both championship calendars, and it almost goes without saying that this weekend could play a significant role in the final result.

Crunch time for title contenders

Ferrari Formula 1 charger Fernando Alonso and Ford Performance Racing V8 Supercars pilot Mark Winterbottom arrive in Abu Dhabi with similar equations on their hands. If they are to overhaul the respective championship leaders Sebastian Vettel and Jamie Whincup, they’re quite simply going to need to start winning races.

Alonso has not won since the German Grand Prix in July, a full eight races ago. Likewise, it’s been a dry spell for Winterbottom, who last took the top step at Phillip Island in mid-May. Both have led their respectively championships this year but enter the final three races as clear underdogs.

“We know that we need to improve,” says

Alonso, who now sits 13 points behind Vettel after seeing his Red Bull Racing rival win the last four consecutive races.

“I think we need to bring some new parts to Abu Dhabi, hopefully improve a little bit more then competitiveness of the car, try to be a little bit closer to Red Bulls on Saturday and hopefully on Sunday as well. “Obviously three races remaining; championship is the main target so we need to recover some points and will be nice to finish in front of Sebastian in Abu Dhabi, whatever the position it is. And if we can win the race it will be even better – but for that we need to make a step forward. At the moment we are not able to win.”

me that it always comes down to a handful of points on the last race on the last day,” he says of the title fight.

“I’m predicting that this thing is going to be a dog fight until the end. The longer the year goes on, the more desperate the other guys will get, so I just have to make sure I just do what I do – focus and just drive the car as fast as I can.

“Three rounds doesn’t seem like much, but in my mind, there’s a long way to go. I’m just looking forward to doing what I do and going as hard as I can. To be honest, I don’t want the end of the year to come fast. I want to make the most of these last three events and hopefully my best race of the year is yet to come.”

Says Winterbottom simply of his weekend: “It will be tight but we need to win races and score more points than Jamie (Whincup) – that is our goal for the weekend.”

Winterbottom is perhaps better placed than Alonso to end his winless streak this weekend. The 31-year-old has scored three podium finishes in his four previous starts at the venue, with only a Safety Car debacle keeping him well down in the second race last year. The format change for this year, he says, could be the catalyst for a breakthrough victory.

“The sprint races will reward good qualifying and that has been our strength of late so hopefully that works for us,” he says. “Using the F1 layout means past results (at Abu Dhabi) don’t mean too much as the racing will be different. We

saw at Sandown in the sprint races the racing was frantic and that should be a good gauge for Abu Dhabi.”

Whincup, of course, has other ideas. The three-time and reigning champion has won six times since Winterbottom’s last triumph, including the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. Whincup has won three of the four V8 Supercar races held in Abu Dhabi, and more success this weekend could see his 218 point lead blow-out to near unassailable proportions.

Having come out on both sides of the end-of-season title fight each year since 2007, Whincup isn’t expecting to have it easy in the remaining races.

“The thing I have on my side is experience in this situation, and my experience tells

He adds of the weekend’s format: “If Sandown was any indication, it’s going to be pretty loose. If anyone thinks that a 12 lap race is going to be boring, they’re kidding themselves. There’s going to be action. It will be a wild weekend.”

And what of Vettel? The 25-year-old is closing in on his third consecutive world title - a feat only previously achieved by Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher.

While victory in the Indian Grand Prix was not only Vettel’s fourth consecutive victory, but the third consecutive race in which he led every lap, he’s refusing to get carried away just yet.

“If we speak about the world championship, obviously this was another good step for us, but still a long way to go and we have seen this year how quickly things can change,” he said after last weekend’s race. “There’s a lot more to come and we’ll try to take things step by step.”

Circuit DescriptionBuilt on top of the man-made Yas Island at a reported cost of $1.3 billion, the Hermann Tilke-designed Yas Marina Circuit held the distinction of hosing the first ever ‘evening’ Grand Prix when it joined the Formula 1 calendar in 2009.

The circuit added the V8 Supercars Championship to its calendar in 2010, with this year marking the first time the two classes have run on the same weekend. The change will see the Australian category taste the full circuit for the first time, having previously run on the 4.7km version.

turn 1Turn 1 is medium speed, around 130kph, leading into the high speed Turns 2 and 3 which should be flat out in qualifying and only something for the drivers to think about when they are on heavy fuel loads.

turn 2Turn 2 is a defining corner for set-up. You need sufficient front wing to eradicate high speed understeer and this defines

the Car

rear wingThe recent tracks - Suzuka, Korea, India have been a high-medium downforce level whereas Yas Marina is more towards a Monaco level of downforce - almost maximum because of the section between Turn 11 and 21 which is all very low speed with a lot of second gear corners.

BrakesThere are reasonable braking demands, especially into Turns 5, 8, 11 which have quite high speed approaches to the low speed corners. Temperatures will need to be monitored as will wear; these are not likely to be an issue, but more attention is paid to them here than at other tracks.

SuspensionThe kerbs are more pronounced than seen at some other tracks, in particular Turns 8, 9 and through the last sector. A soft car which rides the kerbs well helps here, but it’s a trade-off between having a soft car which will ride over the kerbs and one which is stiff enough for the driver to have a sharp change of direction which is necessary for the chicanes – 8-9 and 11-13.

tyresThe consecutive allocation of the medium

and soft compound Pirelli tyres should not present too many issues, with both tyres likely to suit the circuit – opening up the potential strategy permutations.

front wingTurn 2 is the crucial corner for determining how much front wing is used. More front wing is required here than for any other corner, so you need sufficient front wing for Turn 2 without causing too much detriment elsewhere..

engineThe day to night schedule makes ambient conditions vary significantly and grip levels, tyre warm up and air pressure will change. The engine needs to respond to this new set of parameters, so careful engine management and flexibility is crucial.

how much front wing is used as the other corners can all use less than this one.

turn 5Turn 5 has one of the bigger braking demands on the circuit, down from around 300kph..

turn 7Good engine pickup out of Turn 7 is vital for to enter the longest straight of the track. Turn 7 is a second gear corner, taken at around 70kph.

turns 8 - 9The fastest part of the circuit, at the end of one of the longest straights in F1 with a maximum speed of around 320kph. It’s followed by heavy braking down to second gear and around 80kph. The kerbs are used aggressively through Turns 8-9 so a soft car is beneficial here.

approaching turn 11Another long straight with a top speed of over 300kph which leads into a heavy braking zone for Turn 11. Turns 11-13 need a good change of direction from the car.

turns 11 - 21Between Turns 11 and 21 is all very low speed with a lot of second gear corners, very reminiscent of a street course without actually being a street course.

The race format certainly makes the strategy simple this weekend - take the lead off the start and then run

flat-out until the chequered flag!

Qualifying

The most interesting part of the weekend will be qualifying as each car’s three fastest laps in the 20 minute session sets the grid positions for Races 24, 25 and 26 respectively. I’m not sure how well thought through this concept was to be honest as on a 5.5km track you’re only going to have time to do either three lots of one-lap runs or two lot of two-lap runs. Effectively everyone’s slowest time in the session will set the Race 26 grid.

Where it could really come undone is if there’s a red flag. Usually the clock stops for

the first 15 minutes of red flag intervention, but because we’re running with Formula 1 that won’t be the case. With this format we certainly can’t afford to be losing time with a session stoppage.

tyres

We’ve been allocated 12 hard and 12 soft compound tyres this weekend, which is an interesting combination given that qualifying and two of the races need to be done on the softs. While we’ll be scratching for softs, chances are that we’ll be leaving with an unused set of hards. Seeing that they don’t get delivered back into the country until the 20th of December, we’ll likely be taking them off the boat and putting them straight into the bin...

track

The biggest difference for us this year is the time of day that we’ll be on track. Obviously we race with the Formula 1 guys at Albert Park each year so we’ve got some idea of how the track evolution is shaped by their Pirelli rubber, but the difference there is that we are on in the evening when

we race there. This year for example we only had one race that could be considered hot at around 35 degrees or so of track temperature.

In Abu Dhabi we’re expecting it to be 40 degrees or more when we’re on track and it’ll come down into the 30s when the F1 cars are out. Qualifying at 9:30am and racing at 3:00pm will mean about 20 degrees different in the track temperature, which will take a very different car I would have thought.

Brakes

The combination of running in hotter ambient temperatures and running the longer configuration circuit means that it’ll be quite a lot harder on brakes this year. Using the full back straight gives you a 270km/h to 50km/h stop into Turn 8, and you’ve got another ‘sixth-to-first’ braking area into Turn 11. Even though each race is only 65km I think they’ll be extremely hard on brakes.

Russell Ingall will rack up a career milestone in Abu Dhabi - his 500th Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship race start.

The 2005 V8 Supercar champion will bring up the ‘500’ in Race 25 in Abu Dhabi (the second Saturday race) and remains the most experienced driver in the current field.

His 500th race start will come up in Ingall’s 217th ATCC/V8SC event.

The Supercheap Auto Racing driver sits 12th in the V8 Supercars

Holden’s VE Commodore is closing in on a special milestone in the history of the Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship.

The VE and its current VE II model have won a record 97 ATCC/ V8SC races since it was debuted at the 2007 Clipsal 500 with victory in the hands of Todd Kelly and the Holden Racing Team, left.

Three more race wins will see it become the first model to hit 100 race wins in the history of the ATCC/V8SC - a clean sweep in Abu Dhabi would bring up the century.

Prior to this weekend’s event in Abu Dhabi, there have been a total of 50 V8 Supercars Championship races held on foreign soil outside Australia.

Those races have been held since 2001 in New Zealand (Pukekohe and Hamilton), China (Shanghai), Bahrain and Abu Dhabi with the United States to be added next year with the Circuit of The Americas.

Jamie Whincup is the most successful driver with 12 race wins overseas clear of Greg Murphy (nine), Garth Tander (seven), Mark Skaife (five), Todd Kelly (four), Jason Bright and Mark Winterbottom (three each).

The most successful team has been Triple Eight (13), clear of HRT and Kmart Racing/HSV Dealer Team (12 each), Ford Performance Racing and PWR Racing (five each), Stone Brothers Racing (two) and Kelly Racing (one).

DID YOUKNOW ?

V8 Supercars Championship leader Jamie Whincup holds a 218 point lead over Mark Winterbottom heading to Abu Dhabi, but it’s his record at fly-away races that must also have his rivals nervous.

The three-time V8 Supercar champion has won three of the four races at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi (in 2010 and 2011, right) and finished on the podium in all four of them.

He also has a brilliant recent strike rate in the Middle East, amassing eight race wins from his last nine starts since 2008 across both Abu Dhabi and Bahrain.

The battle for the V8 Supercars Champion Manufacturer award looks set to go down to the wire in 2012.

Holden is attempting to claim its third straight Champion Manufacturers crown and

Whincup has won more races than any other driver in the championship in 2012 - eight - and a pair of pole positions on the Gold Coast has moved him to the top of the chase for the Armor All Pole Position Award, which he has won for the last four years straight.

favourite to win a fifth consecutive Grand Prix. The 25-year-old German has led every lap in the last three races having started on the front-row on each occasion.

Red Bull’s recent qualifying dominance, locking out the front-row for the last three races, has effectively shut-out its opposition from the outset. Mark Webber has used his improved starting positions to score two of his season tally of four podiums in the last two races, with his third place finish in India coming despite a KERS issue.

A one-two finish would be just the ticket for Vettel’s championship campaign this weekend.

championship fight at Yas Marina. The Spaniard dragged a second place finish from his Ferrari in India despite proving unable to qualify among the first two rows for the sixth time in seven races.

The team insists, however, that it has not turned the development tap off of its current car, a statement at least partially proven by the exhaust upgrades it has brought to recent events.

The Orrcon-backed pilot clearly needs to start beating Jamie Whincup if he wants to enter the final races with a realistic shot at championship glory. Winterbottom’s double-podium on the Gold Coast was the result of some magnificent disaster-recovery, but thirds won’t be enough from here on in.

A 10th place finish for Fabian Coulthard and co-driver Nicholas Minassian on Sunday in Surfers Paradise is the only top 10 that the three-car squad has scored since Sydney Motorsport Park in August. The Gold Coast weekend in fact saw Coulthard drop out of the top 10 in points - a deeply disappointing development after a highly encouraging mid-season run for the Lockwood entry.Jason Bright used a mix of fuel strategy and speed to star in Abu Dhabi last year. A repeat podium finish will likely be too much to ask, but top 10s for either Bright or Coulthard are far from out of the question.

With such limited pre-race running, this could hurt the former Dunlop Series runner’s chances of qualifying higher than the bottom couple of rows.
