Speciality additives for PVC

Page 2: Speciality additives

External additivesExternal additives provide metal release and particulate flow properties in the melt. External additives work at the metal / polymer surface interface to reduce friction to enable the polymer to slide. They are active in both the melt phase and the solid phase and can help deliver :

l Lower friction between the melt and processing surfacel Improved mold releasel Reduced adhesion of resin

2

Internal additivesInternal additives are designed to be highly compatible with the PVC polymer matrix, helping reduce friction from within the melt. They are active in the molten phase and can help deliver :

l Lower melt viscosityl Improved flowl Better mold fillingl Reduced energy consumption

Speciality additives for PVCCroda offers a comprehensive range of internal and external additives to improve the properties of PVC and other polymers. As well as being high performance lubricants, the range of additives from Croda can also be used effectively as dispersion aids for pigments, anti-static and anti- fogging additives and speciality plasticisers in various systems.

An additive can be classed as either an internal or external lubricant each providing different characteristics during polymer processing. Choosing an additive depends upon the polymer formulation, processing technique and final application. Dosing levels are usually between 0.5% and 2% inclusion and can be added directly to the resin or via a suitable masterbatch. This is dependent upon the formulation, final application and effect required.

Lubrication / Mold ReleaseVirgin PVC generates high frictional heat during processing which can lead to stability problems and poor performance. Choosing a PVC lubricant from the range below will help improve flow by lowering melt viscosity and reducing friction between the melt and machine surfaces.

As well as improving polymer performance, our products are designed to optimise processes by improving flow and aiding mold release. Choosing the right additive for your polymer can improve your polymer process.

Key Benefitsl Increased output efficiencyl Minimised machine wearl Reduced energy consumptionl Consistent mold releasel Improved surface finishl Less rejects and waste

Anti-staticPVC is a good insulator and has the ability to support high static charge. The Atmer range of anti-static additives can be added to the polymer in the melt phase or via masterbatch to give anti-static benefits during processing and handling.

Key Benefitsl Decreased static build-up in the polymerl Decreased attraction of dust, leading to superior quality and appearance of the partl Reduced risk of electric shock to employees and consumers

UV ProtectionIn sheet, film and bottle packaging, the unique patented technology of the SolasorbTM range provides superior dispersion and UV protection. Unlike the commonly used organic UV absorbers, the stable metal oxide dispersions are proven to deliver low migration and permanent UV protection.

The use of Solasorb can aid colour dispersion and preserve colour intensity over time, helping to maintain a constant colour of an article even after prolonged exposure to sun light.

Key Benefitsl Superior UV absorption and colour protection when compared to metal oxide powdersl Reduced re-agglomeration due to stable optimised dispersionl UV absorption in the same order as organic UV absorbersl Permanent, non-migratory and non-degrading

Syncroflex delivers coated fabrics for oilfield protective clothing

Croda were approached by a customer looking for a plasticiser to use in coated fabrics in oilfield protective clothing. The customer had experienced problems with traditional phthalates migrating out of the fabric when in contact with oils causing the fabric coating to crack dramatically, which reduced the working life of the clothing.

From the table below the customer was able to identify Syncroflex 3155 and Syncroflex 3114 as the products with the best oil extraction resistance. As a secondary parameter the customer also stated that they would like good detergent resistance, as the items of clothing could come into contact with them during cleaning. Again using the table they were able to differentiate between Syncroflex 3155 and 3114 based on detergent extraction with Syncroflex 3155 showing improved detergent extraction resistance when compared to Syncroflex 3114.
