JEFFERSON - Visi-tors to the AshtabulaCounty Fair will get apeek at country life, aswell as experience avariety of fun activi-ties, when the fair re-turns to Jefferson onAug. 9-14.

The fair can be amemorable experi-ence for any familybecause there’s a littlesomething for every-one: the fair food(since it’s only once ayear, it’s perfectly okayto indulge in cottoncandy, elephant earsand fair fries!), thedemolition derby andtruck shows, the ap-pearance by nationalcountry stars Josh Th-ompson and JamesWesley on Saturday, the many exhibits ofquilts, photos, draw-ings and other locallycreated and grownitems, the concerts, the games, the horseraces and the rides(many fairs make visi-tors purchase indi-vidual tickets for therides, but at theAshtabula County Fair, visitors receive unlim-ited rides with theiradmission).

Of course, the maindraw will always haveto be the animals. There’s something in-credibly joyful aboutwatching a child see apig or cow up close, for the very first time.Since these animals

Keeping upwith the fairWhile many events have been planned

for months, some are still being finalized.Emergencies also might crop up that ne-cessitate some changes.

To keep up with the latest on fair news, upcoming events, and details on what hashappened so far, pick up the Fair Dailieseach day at each gate.

The Fair Dailies, marked for each day ofthe fair, will include an updated scheduleand any news updates about events, lo-cation changes or other things visitors tothe Ashtabula County Fairgrounds needto know.

For events that change after the FairDailies are published, updates will bemade throughout the day via the publicaddress system.

Fair visitors can also check in with theAshtabula County Fair office, which is lo-cated in the front of the Grandstand bythe Midway.

The fair office hours vary, so check theschedule before visiting it.

For more information about the fair, phone (440) 576-0557.

have been lovinglycared for by a 4-H’er,many 4-H’ers will al-low the children to petthe animals and letmom or dad take apicture, which theywill look at manyyears from now andsay, “Rememberwhen...”

The AshtabulaCounty Fair is one ofthe only fairs to re-ward the 4-H’er, notjust the animal. Whilemany fairs only judgethe quality of the ani-mals, the AshtabulaCounty Fair, whenawarding the topprizes, favors evaluat-ing what the 4-H’ershave learned fromtheir project, includ-ing knowledge foundin a book, like parts ofthe animal, what to dowhen they suspect ananimal is sick, how tohouse the animal andso forth, and morehands-on knowledge, such as how well the

4-H’ers can show theiranimal in a ring.

Because of this as-pect, 4-H is one of themost fun and educa-tional youth organiza-tions. Youth meet newfriends, and they learndedication and re-sponsibility, especiallywhen their project in-volves raising a living, breathing animal. They take pride andownership in a varietyof projects, includingraising animals, sew-ing their own clothes, growing their owngarden, buildingrocket launchers andlearning archery. There’s a project forjust about any interestimaginable (contactthe Ohio State Univer-sity Extension Officein Jefferson for moreinformation).

But besides the ani-mals, there’s plenty ofother things to do atthe Ashtabula County.

The Tonny

Petersen’s Hell Driverswill put on a show onTuesday in the Grand-stands. This event is amodern day, travelingstunt show spectacu-lar. Motocrossrumbles through theGrandstands onWednesday, and theannual DemolitionDerby returns Thurs-day and Friday.

There will be plentyof rides and games onthe midway throughLisko Entertainment, and children also willhave plenty of con-tests to participate inon Kids’ Day. Kids’ Dayis on Wednesday, andchildren 14 years oldand under are admit-ted free to the fair onthis day.

Performances bythe Elephant Encoun-ter, Granpa CratchetShow and jugglerMark Hayward will beheld daily. Swifty theClown will be strollingthe midway through-out the week.

So come to theAshtabula County Fairfor a fun time, and letthe 4-Hers know thattheir hard work hasn’tgone unnoticed (youmight even bid on alocal, farm-raised ani-mal during the live-stock auction, held 3p.m. Friday at theMAC Arena)!

For a full scheduleand more details, seeinside this special sec-tion dedicated to theAshtabula County Fair.

And it is oh, sogood!

Food and beverageconcessions at theAshtabula County Fairline the midway of thefairgrounds. Imagineany kind of fair foodor carnival-type food

and it will probably besomewhere. You justhave to find it.

Bob Jones, fairboard member, saidthere will be, ofcourse, the standardsausage sandwichesand prime rib sand-wiches, favorites ofthe county fair visitor.Chicken and ribs din-ners are also part ofthe fare.

“There are greatgyros in pita breadthere. People will findMexican tacos. They’re good,” Jonessaid.

Other selections in-clude fried veggies, corn dogs and fudge,to name just a few.

Seek, and ye shallfind!

As a counter, goodold fashioned homecooked food just likegrandma or momused to make is avail-able on the fair-grounds.

“These meals canbe found at theJefferson Grange (res-taurant) along themidway. The JeffersonGrange also featuresbreakfast in the morn-ing,” Jones said.

Walk along the lineinside the JeffersonGrange restaurant onany given day of thefair, Aug. 9-14, andcustomers will see anynumber of whole-some, delicious foods. The Grange is well-known for its mashedpotatoes that literallymelt in your mouth.

The PlymouthGrange also preparesfood for fair visitors. Both granges havegood prices for theirfood.

“Our concession-aires help to keep theprices down to makeit a part of the familyentertainment,” Jonessaid.

Beverages are theperfect complementto fair food, and a va-riety is available upand down the midwayand the restaurants, aswell as the HolsteinClub booth and seat-ing area.

On the midwayFair food is funand delicious

The Holstein Club isa must stop. Manypeople rave abouttheir milkshakes. Astronger adjectivethan good may be ap-propriate. They alsohave ice cream cones.

“There is a variety ofdrink choices, lemon-ade, iced tea, water, pop and others,”Jones said. “The big-gest thing to remem-ber is that the people

work hard to bringfood and drink to thefair. I and others ap-

preciate what they do.There are about 35food vendors.”

JEFFERSON – Apopular family showthat gives AshtabulaCounty fairgoers a30-minute opportu-nity to rest their feetis popular with kidsand parents alike.

Billed as a “puppetshow,” GranpaCrachet’s show fea-tures a Muppet-like,one-man “old coot”who uses kid-friendlyantics to teach les-sons of safety first.

Again this year,Crachet will drum upaudiences for histhree daily shows inthe back midway bydriving. He will ex-change his tiny redf ire truck of pastyears, with “oldcoot.com” paintedabove the cab, for anold-time garbagetruck. He will drivealong the midwayand stop to chat withkids through a win-dow that is preciselykid-height.

But pedestriansare warned to becareful , becauseCratchet is not agood driver.

At the show, facingan audience seatedon bleachers, theMuppet-like charac-ter uses a few propson a small stage todrive home his mes-sage.

This year, an old-time garbage truckwill be featured atthe center of hisshow. Giving newmeaning to the term,“Trash in, Trash Out,”he will tell the audi-ence that people inthe U.S. produceenough trash annu-ally to fill 63,000 gar-bage trucks, or that iflaid end-to-end, alldisposable diapersthrown out each yearwould equal the dis-tance of seven tripsto the moon — andsmell bad, too.

Some fair-goersshould be fore-warned that Crachetgoes for the “gross”

factor, loving it whenkids in the audienceshout out, “Granpa! That’s gross!” as oneyoungster did whenthe old coot at-tempted to mix upturkey gravy andcatchup while mak-ing popcorn in aunique jet rocketpopcorn popper thatblew up in Crachet’sface.

This year, he will beautographing giant“Garbage In, GarbageOut” wall postersavailable at the end ofthe show. The back ofthe poster will bef illed with garbagetidbits and remindersthat what childrenput into their minds, bodies and hearts willeventually come out.

Granpa mixes hispeddling of goodswith the giving awayof hugs, and there isusually no shortageof kids, includingadolescent boys, wil l ing to hugGramps at the end ofthe show.

They call him“Ohio’s premier bal-loon artist,” a manwho can create almostanything out of noth-ing.

Nothing but hot airreleased into a bal-loon, that is.

Swifty, that wackyclown, will be makingbirds, planes and justabout anything elseimaginable — andbeyond — at theAshtabula County Fair.

On the midway

Dressed in a color-ful get-up of a brightblue shirt, stripedpants, oversizedclown shoes, and ared hat, with clownmake-up, Swifty theClown is easily spot-ted walking up anddown the midway ofthe 2011 AshtabulaCounty Fair, stoppingupon request to cre-ate every imaginable

shape and creatureright before youreyes.

Almost like Santa in“The Night BeforeChristmas,” Swifty getsstraight to his work. With over 3,000 cre-ations in his reper-toire, Swifty is bestknown for creatingcolorful animals, flow-ers, and shapes.

According to hisweb site, “If you canimagine it, Swifty cancreate it.”

But most kids at thefair spot one ofSwifty’s creations be-ing carried, or evenworn, by anotherfairgoer, and askSwifty to make onejust like it for them.

Swifty’s alter ago isAllen Stray, of Novelty. In his clown get-up,he performs weekly atnumerous Clevelandlocations. He hasbeen seen on Fox8News, Mike Trivisano’sradio show on WTAM,and featured on thecountry’s top balloon

magazine, “BalloonMagic.”

Swifty credits his in-terest in balloons to alarge drawer of bal-loons of all sizes be-longing to his grand-father. The two begancreating after doingwhat kids normally dowith balloons -bouncing themaround and stickingthem to the wallthanks to the build-upof static electricity.

Stray has been per-forming since he wasin high school. At onetime, he dabbled inmagic, and learnedjuggling from a book,“Juggling for the

Complete Klutz.” Thatsent him into a mimetroupe for about fiveyears, and it was dur-ing those years thathe picked up balloontwisting.

The rest is history.Swifty will be show-

ing a mere fraction ofhis talents at the fair-grounds, however. Al-ways thinking ofsomething new tocreate with balloons,Swifty in 2004 createdthe f irst BalloonManor HauntedHouse to raise moneyfor a cancer center inRochester, N.Y. He re-peated the feat twoyears later, using

130,000 balloons andthe aid of 65 volun-teers.

Then, in April, 2007,a 12-hour ballooncreation borne of theimagination of Swiftyand a California bal-loonist took fourthplace in the WorldMaster Balloon Com-petition in Florence,Italy.

Back here at home, many lucky fairgoerswill be able to takehome a custom bal-loon creation theyhelped Swifty create, one that will last al-most as long asmemories of the fairitself.

JEFFERSON - Ifyou’re looking for freeentertainment guar-anteed to providelaughs, don’t missMark Hayward’s show, offered three timesdaily, at the BobBarnard Entertain-ment Center at the2011 AshtabulaCounty Fair.

After all, a guy whohas entertained on”David Letterman”cannot be taken tooseriously.

That guy is yo-yochampion MarkHayard, whose com-bination of comedyand object manipula-tion keeps audiencessecond-guessing ev-ery minute.

Hayward is billed asan adept entertainerwho can do a stageshow, table-to-tablecocktail party or ban-quet entertainment,or street shows at a

festival or fair.He will not bring a

street show to the BobBarnard Entertain-ment Center, but hisroutine will comeclose. He is so adeptwith a yo-yo that youmay head home andpull out of an olddrawer a yo-yo thatyou consideredworthless and juvenilemany years ago.

Aso good at play-

ing with toys, Hay-ward is a comedy jug-gler, a guy whose website claims that he waslost as an infant whileon a safari with hisparents through Zaire,in central Africa.

At some unknownpoint, as the storygoes, Hayward fell outof the vehicle, couldnot be found, and wasraised by chimps un-til he was 14, when he

miraculously reunitedwith his birth parents.Hayward still tells sto-ries of his adoptedparents, Coochie andBobo, from his days inthe rain forest.

In reality, Haywardhad an ordinary child-hood in Madison,Wisc., until being toldchances were likelythat he could grow upto be a baton twirler.Upset at the idea of afeminine profession,he was propelled tobecome a profes-sional comedy jug-gler, yo-yo performer, and all-around funnyguy.

In high school, Hay-ward received a Hum-mingbird Hol-Yo-Gram yo-yo in hisstocking at Christmas. When a high schooljuggling club wasformed, Hayward’s toymastery blossomed. He joined a highschool group, “TheWest High Jugglers.”While majoring in art

at college, he contin-ued to perform. Soonafter starting a gradu-ate degree inMetalsmithing at theUniversity of Illinois atUrbana-Champaign,Hayward was offeredmoney to do two yo-yo shows.

Answering his truecalling, Hayward soonleft school to becomea professional jugglerand yo-yo guy.

This “yo-yo” guy,

who holds the 1995Masters DivisionWorld Yo-Yo Champi-onship, will bring hisunique show to theAshtabula County Fair, combining yo-yoswith old favorites suchas juggling clubs andtorches. Tricks will in-clude the AtomSmasher, Boingy-Boingy, the BrainTwister, Walk the Dogand Rock the Baby.

JEFFERSON - Elephants are among the mostpopular of wild animals.

Tall and lumbering, they have been a boonto human labor and fascinating to watch aswell, delighting circus audiences and zoo visi-tors.

This year, Ashtabula County fairgoers willhave a chance to watch them perform andlearn more about the ponderous pachydermsat the “Elephant Encounter.”

Two elephants, Cora and Shannon, will per-form at three free shows daily in a ring by theFloral Building at the Fairgrounds.

Considered pets by owners/trainers Bill andCindy Morris, of Gibsonton, Fla., the couplewill show how each animal’s unique personal-ity shines through as she obediently performsin the ring or on special stands. The elephantswear tiny headdresses, with the initial “C” or“S” to add color to the show.

“Elephant Encounter” is more than enter-tainment. It is also educational, teaching au-diences the difference between the African andAsian elephant.

Cora is a 48-year-old Asian elephant weigh-ing 9,000 pounds, while Shannon, a 24-year-old African elephant, tips the scales at 4,500pounds.

The Morrises offer the show to prove that

these creatures are neither circus nor zoo el-ephants.

Instead, they are family elephants, akin topets, which have been cared for by the Morrisfamily for almost their whole lives.

The Morris family has been dedicated to thestudy and care of the elephants for nearly threegenerations. They use no leg chains or wireson the elephants during the show but conveycommands through authoritarian voices. Theyshow the versatility of the animal and theircapacity to respond to human affection.

“Elephant Encounter” offers the opportunityto see wild animals at the fair, in contrast tothe domesticated farm animals over at theother side of the fairgrounds.

So take advantage of the opportunity to getoff your feet, sit a while at the bleachers and

enjoy a circus-like show where trainers/own-ers display why they are so proud of their pets.

My experience with the Morris’ furthered myeducation about elephants in captivity. I amvery concerned about how elephants and allanimals are treated. I have seen both bad andgood treatment of elephants in captivity andin the wild. The Morrises are a good exampleof elephants in captivity receiving exceptionalcare. Their elephants are ambassadors for theeducation and support of elephants through-out the world. By reaching out to peoplearound the country, they open doors for newsupporters of elephants. These new support-ers can further help save the elephants’ wildhabitat, which is quickly diminishing, and fur-ther support better standards for care of cap-tive elephants.

Tonny Petersen firststarted performing inthe Jack Kochman HellDrivers, but he nowhas a thrill show of hisown.

Petersen was alsothe stunt show coor-dinator for the CharlieBelknap’s HollywoodShow, and he alsotraveled with the Im-perial Hell Driversthrill show.

Petersen is most fa-mous for raising and

balancing his car ononly two wheels andalso for his high-speed reverse spin.

The Hell Driversthrill show includesprecision driving ofbrand-new automo-biles, high-speed re-verse spins, deliberatecrashes and trickytwo-wheel driving.

During the thrillsshow, the audiencewitnesses spectaculardriving feats up closeand personal in a fam-ily-friendly atmo-sphere. No Holly-wood special effectsor computer gener-ated illusions are usedin the live actionstunts.

Motorcycles arealso part of the showas riders fly through aburning barricade of

“The TonnyPetersen’s Hell Driversweaves an automotiveartistry of daredevildriving and signaturestunts featuring high-flying, gravity-defyingtheatrical perfor-mances in this time-less production,” ac-cording to the HellDriver’s website.

Petersen hasteamed up withJohnny Wisner, who isboth a stunt driverand producer forTonny Petersen’s HellDrivers.

The show offershigh-speed drivingand intentional carcrashes that will leavethe fans on the edgeof their seats.

Justin Bellinger isalso part of the act asWrongway the Dare-devil Clown. Bellinger, aka Wrongway, is of-ten found communi-cating and banteringback and forth withKramer during theshow.

“Justin returns for

Curtis is famous fordriving his DodgeAvenger and drop-ping through f ire, along with otherstunts such as thedeath-defying Auto-Bats. Curtis takes careof business both inthe spotlight and be-hind the scenes.

“Watch the nation’stop stunt drivers per-form a series ofbumper clicking crossovers with brand newDodge Avenger auto-mobiles while negoti-ating narrow, confin-ing ramp elevations. The sights, soundsand smells that haveentertained genera-tion after generationof thrill show fans hasbeen rejuvenated witha sense of heritage fargreater then any pro-duction has achievedin recent years,” offi-cials said.

JEFFERSON - Therich tradition of thedemolition derby willonce again be return-ing to the AshtabulaCounty Fair on Thurs-day, Aug. 11, and Fri-day, Aug. 12. Thedemolition derby willstart at 7:30 p.m. onboth nights, and ad-mission to the grand-stand will be $4.

The Nation-wideDemolition Derbytakes place in the in-field of the track infront of the grand-stand.

There were 53 driv-ers who participatedin the demolitionderby last year, includ-ing 15 compact cardrivers. There werefour heats in thedemolition derby, andthe top three in eachheat advanced to thefeature event. Eachdriver qualifying re-ceived $25 and a tro-phy.

Last year’s winnerof the demolitionderby was MikeScwentker, whoedged out Brett

Bentley.The f irst night of

the derby is open toall Ashtabula Countydrivers. Local driverslike that the first nightis closed to outsiders, and they enjoy drivingin a county fair atmo-sphere in front of theirfamily and friends. The fans in atten-dance love seeing thecars run into eachother and their favor-ite driver smashingand damaging theother cars.

One of the bestparts of the demoli-tion derby to a lot ofthe drivers is thepreparation of the car.The drivers have tofollow certain require-ments to keep theircar legal for competi-tion, but they haveplenty of say in howthe car looks.

The driver gets todesign their car any-way they want, fromthe number of the carto the color scheme. Some of the driverseven go as far as hav-ing a theme everyyear for the car.

The cars are in-spected prior to the

race to ensure all driv-ers have compliedwith the rules. Most ofthe vehicle modifica-

tion is for safety pur-poses. All of the driv-ers are given a list ofrules pertaining to thepreparation of theircar, along with theirentry form.

The second night isopen to anyone, anddrivers from aroundthe region like theevent because it isconveniently locatedand offers a drivingchallenge.

Pennsylvania and NewYork to compete forthe prize money.

One of the mainrules for the event isthat drivers are re-quired to continue tomake contact withother vehicles as longas they are able andthe last car able to runis the winner. Alljudges’ rulings are fi-nal, and judges are inthe pit area and sign-up area ensuring driv-ers don’t try to slipanything past that givethem an advantage.

One of the mostimportant parts of thederby for drivers is tostay off the logs, be-cause once they get atire or two over it isnearly impossible toescape.

The derby is com-posed of several indi-

vidual heats and onefeature with cashprizes going to thewinners of each heatand a grand prize go-ing to the winner ofthe feature.

Fair board mem-bers caution that alldrivers must be oldenough to have avalid Ohio driver li-cense or license fromtheir particular state.

The Nation-WideDemolition Derbyputs on between 75and 100 demolitionderbies from Maythrough November in18 different states. The Ashtabula CountyFair usually sees be-tween 50 to 100 driv-ers each night. Thosenumbers don’t in-clude all of the friendsand family who helpin the pits.

JEFFERSON - Josh Thompson, song writerand singer from the Nashville area, will be theSaturday night grandstand performer at theAshtabula County Fair on Aug. 13, along withguest star James Wesley, another up-and-com-ing country singer. Thompson grew up in Mil-waukee in a working man’s family, then gothis first guitar at 21. His father owned a con-crete business which Thompson worked inbetween going to college to study forestry andwildlife management.

He liked writing music and recruited somebuddies to form a rock band doing gigs inMichigan’s Upper Peninsula at music festivals

and backwoods bars. Thompson, after twoyears in college, decided to take off for Alaskato take a wilderness guide course using hisskills from books and hunting on hisgrandfather’s farm as a kid. With no job pros-pects, Thompson came back home. He beganto write more country music, then headed toNashville in 2005. After seven months of writ-ers’ nights, networking and his first attemptat co-writing, Thompson said he landed a pub-lishing deal with Ash Street Music.

In April 2008, Thompson signed a manage-ment deal with Creek House Entertainment’sJulianne Drennon.

“She believed in me enough to pitch mysongs free of charge,” he says.

He continued to write country music and

got a label deal. More recently, Thompson hasopened for artists including Brad Paisley, EricChurch, Jamey Johns and Hank Williams Jr.

“I love feeding on the crowd. I love to getthem rowdy and get rowdy back. I like to puton a show, turn around and beat the drums alittle bit-literally,” Thompson said.

Thompson professes his love for the blue-collar, honky-tonk crowd. His newest releaseis titled, “Way Out Here.”

“The men and women that, like it says in‘Beer on the Table,’ pretty much work theirbutts off all week and like to have a good timeFriday night, because that’s who I am—a work-ing guy that got lucky enough to get a record-ing contract,” he said.

Guest star with Thompson is James Wesley, who grew up in Mound Valley, a tiny commu-nity in southeastern Kansas. Wesley says hef irst discovered country music in hisgrandmother’s record collection of songs byMarty Robbins, George Jones and Ray Price.

Wesley was encouraged to sing by hismother, who would hear him singing in hisbedroom with the door shut. She wanted himto sing in church, so Wesley started singing inthe family church, then taught himself to playa guitar, an old Stella practice model.

By his late teens, Wesley was singing in lo-cal nightclubs and considering a career inmusic. He moved to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where he performed in nightly music and va-riety shows. He got married to wife Mindeeand they have two children.

Wesley and his family followed a dream, sell-ing everything including their home in Arkan-sas, then headed to Nashville Music City cir-

cuit. He took a construction job to support thefamily and met songwriter Rodney Clawsonand producer Dan Frizsell. The trio began re-cording together with their work being noticedby Broken Bow Records.

Wesley signed with the recording companyand released his first song, “Jackson Hole” as

Fair board memberEverett Helfer is ex-

Helfer ’s wife,Betty, won the ap-pearance last Janu-ary in a drawing at acounty fair conven-tion in Columbus.

“They put on ashow themselves atthe hotel, and wesigned up for thedrawing during theday. At the end of theshow, they drew thename of my wife,Betty,” said Helfer.

The Robinsonswere excited aboutcoming to Ashtabulaas well. They are wellacquainted with theHelfers, who haveheard the talentedfamily sing everyyear at the MahoningCounty Fair inCanfield. Helfer hadbeen trying to getThe Robinsons in-volved with theAshtabula CountyCovered Bridge Fes-tival, but it simplynever worked out.

“They were hap-pier than Betty, be-cause they knew us,and are delightedabout coming toAshtabula County,”Helfer said.

Patriarch Jackie

Robinson agrees.“Mr. Helfer has

been precious to us,and we are excited tobe a part of the Fair,he said.

The Robinsonshave been singingfor over 30 years, ever since PrincetonUniversity graduateJackie, a formerteacher, and his wife,Mary Ruth, begansinging to studentsin their home.

“The students saidwe made them feelbetter,” Jackie says onthe web site.

After singing infor-mally across NewYork state, they wona talent contest atthe New York StateFair. The rest is his-tory. Jackie gave up

his teaching career, and the couple soldtheir home and be-gan a musical careerthat has taken themto national televisionand a lucrative con-tract with ChevronOil.

Robinson singersinclude son, Mark ,and daughter—in-law SharronRobinson, and a thirdgeneration. Markand Sharron’s chil-dren, Andrew, 7,Michael, 4, and two-year-old Samanthawill be on the tour aswell. Andrew sings“God Bless America”and another oldsong, “Tell Me YouLove Me, Katie Kline.”

“ E n t e r t a i n i n gpeople means lovingpeople, sharing ourlives, laughing to-gether, cr ying to-gether and beingfamily together,”Jackie says.

The evening be-fore the family takesthe stage, the Helfers— who celebratetheir 46th weddinganniversary over fairweekend — plan tomake the Robinsons’f irst visit toAshtabula Countymemorable. They willescor t them on adriving tour of thecovered bridges, es-

JEFFERSON - TheKiddie Tractor Pull willbe available onceagain at the AshtabulaCounty Fairgrounds. The pint-size tractorpull will be held onSunday, Aug. 14, at 2p.m. in the 4-H Build-ing Expo Center.

“Bob Flack , a[former] fair boardmember, started thepull 20-plus yearsago,” Fair Board Presi-dent Larry Kotnik said.“He ran the KiddieTractor Pull for severalyears.”

The event will givekids who are tooyoung to reach thepedals of a real trac-tor but not too old tocomfortably sit and

pedal a toy, bike-pedal-operated trac-tor a chance to pullsome weights.

Flack developedthe tractor pull andhad the idea to havethe kids pull a sled.

“[Flack] built thesled we use for theevent,” Kotnik said.“It has a little weightthat the sled pulls upas the child pedals, just like the regulartruck , tractor andsemi-pull sleds. Thepull always draws acrowd.”

Like in the regulartractor pull, the childwho pulls the sled thefarthest wins.

“They try to do itthe entire length. Wemeasure as far as theyget on the track. Ifthere is a tie, we put

more weight on thesled and have a pulloff,” Kotnik said.

Unlike a regulartractor pull, the KiddieTractor Pull in a sensemeasures the child’sstrength.

The kids participat-ing in the pull will bedivided into fourclasses, girls fouryears old and under, boys four years oldand younger, girls andand boys f ive yearsold and girls and boyssix years old.

“The girls do itseparately, then theboys compete,” Kotniksaid.

No child will leavethe event emptyhanded, as everyoneis recognized for theirefforts.

“The winners of thetractor pull will win atrophy and ribbon fortheir efforts,” Kotniksaid. “Each child willreceive a ribbon forparticipating.

The tractor usedwas bought at a localtractor supply storeyears back and it hasbeen in use ever since.

“We bought ourpedal tractor from an

Kids’ tractor pull set for Aug. 14

area tractor supplystore several yearsago. Usually any farmequipment dealerwould have them tobuy,” Kotnik said.

The tractor pull is apopular attraction for

kids and adults alike.“The kids have got

farming in their blood.A child might comeup and want a John

Deere or an Interna-tional tractor to drive,”Kotnik said. “Ourpedal tractor is a Min-neapolis Moline.”
