Through Christmas plays and presentations, thekids get to get up and actually take part in the wholeChristmas experience

“It’s easy for kids to relate and identify with theChristmas story,” Barnhart said, adding that it’simportant for the church to let the kids know thatChristmas is more than commercialization.

“I think it’s because kids have that natural tendencyto want to be involved and be active.

The kids get excited about it. They love to be a partof it and act it out and get dressed up,” he said.

NEW YORK (AP) — At a timewhen so many people are out ofwork, New York City’s holidaywindow display designers aresafely employed — and happyto give a gloomy public arespite.

Design work on the elaboratecreations at the city’s biggestdepartment stores often beginsa year in advance and pays offin oohs and ahhs.

“At a time when the economy is hurting so much, you need to have some joy,” saidPatti Solomon, who recentlyflew in from Atlanta for someholiday sightseeing.

“You can look at those windows and remember childhood memories,” she saidas she stood in front of SaksFifth Avenue’s windows, whichshow a fashion-conscious girl’sjourney in stunning, one-of-a-kind dresses in vignettes.

Many of the city’s shopfronts sparkle this time of year, but Saks, Macy’s andBloomingdale’s draw the largestcrowds. The creations rangefrom highly stylized installation art pieces to moreidealized vignettes of days goneby. But they grace the windowsfor only four to six weeks.

Animatronics provide anabridged visual version of“Miracle on 34th Street” atMacy’s, the department storewhose Santa Claus was thebasis for the classic film.

As people pass by onSeventh Avenue, scenes fromthe movie are revealed throughsets that collapse or slide. Theyare made of laser- and hand-cut paper in more than100 colors combined withmechanically controlled, animated figures. The projectrequired 7,084 hours of workfrom 14 paper artisans.

Designer Paul Olszewskiworked with an animation company to give his windows a

“more cinematic and theatricalfeel.”

“I always push technology, but I also wanted to combine anartistry with it, too,” Olszewskisaid.

Macy’s window displays areassembled off site and theninstalled as finished pieces byforklift, he said. But Saks, whose window design team isled by Julio Gomez, assemblesits displays on site, piece bypiece.

Working in a confined window space can be challenging, especially whenthe materials include treebranches, wood paneling, linoleum, garland and paper.

“My background is verymuch hands-on sculptural, welding, carpentry, paintingand all of those things havepretty much come in handydoing this,” Gomez said.

Bloomingdale’s and Macy’sspokespeople declined tocomment on the cost of theirholiday displays; a call to Sakswas not returned.

The artistry that windowdesigners put into their displays is dedicated to all thepeople who walk by every day,Gomez said.

“It’s a very unselfish thingthat we are doing here,” he said.

Bloomingdale’s decided togo all out this year and produce holiday windows using morethan 100 LCD screens createdby a team of computer graphicartists, lead designer JackHruska said. It shows a stylizedwinter scene in which a birddecorates trees magically as itflies past.

At the Macy’s “Miracle on34th Street” display, the awe ofthose creations was evident inthe eyes of a little girl.

When her parents asked thecentral question of the movie —“Do you believe?” — shereplied, “Yes,” her eyes fixed onthe windows.

NYC window displays give reason to rejoice

CROWDS ADMIRE the holiday window displays atMacy’s flagship store in New York City, N.Y. The window displays are assembled off site and then installed as finished pieces by forklift. Many of New York’s shopfronts sparkle this time of year, but Saks, Macy’s andBloomingdale’s draw the largest crowds.
