Social Work is the profession of hope—fueled by resilience and advocacy. Social Workers matter because they help
millions of struggling people every day dream differently. In the United States, more than 650,000 of these highly
trained professionals know how daunting and immobilizing life’s tragedies and obstacles can be. But they also wit-
ness the sheer determination of countless individuals and families to achieve different lives. Sometimes, all it takes
to help people get on the right path is guidance toward what is possible. Other times, social workers are an immedi-
ate lifeline in crisis—providing access to resources and new life options. Those served by social workers possess
many strengths that keep them fighting for a better future despite personal and systemic barriers to success. They
climb toward what is possible rather than simply accepting what the current situation may be. Professional social
workers help combine these client strengths with effective personal and public advocacy.
With these ideas in mind, the NASW-AL Chapter presents:

NASW-AL Chapter Contact
Come and join us as we honor and celebrate the National Association of Social Workers-Alabama Chapter’s Distinguished
Service Award Recipients Tony Walker and Joyce Greathouse on September 27th at our 2013 NASW-AL Chapter Annual
State Conference which is being held at the Renaissance Riverview Plaza Hotel in Mobile Alabama.
“The best way to find yourself is to loose yourself in the service of others.” - Mahatma Gandhi
Let us commemorate them and their service.
Joyce began her social work career in 1956 as a caseworker for Children’s Aid Society in
Birmingham. Since then, she has continued her career as an advocate for child welfare and
social justice. She believes that social workers have a unique opportunity and a role to play
in events and politics. As chair of NASW PACE, she was instrumental in establishment of
the NASW PACE Student Advocacy Day. Since retirement, Joyce has taught English clas-
ses and served as a volunteer immigration counselor through her church’s ministry to inter-
nationals. She has also served on the Jefferson County DHR QA committee, her neighbor-
hood association, the boards VOICES for Alabama’s Children, Jefferson County Develop-
ment Council and the Children’s Aid Foundation. From the University of Montevallo she
has received the Alumni Achievement and Distinguished Alumni Awards. Additionally,
she has been awarded with NASW-AL Chapter, NASW-AL Chapter’s Birmingham Unit’s
Lifetime Achievement, and the University of Alabama School of Social Work Hall of Fame
Awards.
Tony has been retired from active social work practice for about 13 years. And, although
he has a rocking chair, it is rarely used because he has stayed busy. Most retired social
workers continue to do volunteer work, travel, spend time with family and friends or pur-
sue activities they never had the time to do. Since his retirement, Tony has remained in-
volved in both his community, the profession of social work, and with social work educa-
tion. Three organizations have been the focus of his attention and energy. Serving on the
board of the Capri Community Film Society, he was actively involved in raising funds
essential to achieving a long sought community goal of buying the historic theater. He has
also been an actively involved with the University of Alabama School of Social Work
Board of Friends where he served as chair for two terms and was instrumental in the en-
dowment of scholarships, the Lahoma Buford Peace Award (for teaching) and supporting
other needs of the school. Tony was asked to serve as Interim Executive Director when a
vacancy occurred within the NASW-AL Chapter and he worked with our cur-
rent Executive Director during an orientation period.
Tony graciously accepts the National Association of Social Workers-Alabama Chapter’s
Distinguished Service Award on the behalf of every person who has ever proudly worn the
title of "Social Worker" and who has done so much to make a difference in the life of a per-
son in need. He stated, “Our world is a better place because of what each SW does.”

2013 Annual State Conference Registration A Nation’s Fabric
Our national fabric is comprised of many diverse lives. It is vibrant and strong because it has been woven from the stories of
people from every continent into a compelling narrative of struggle, renewal, and success. Each thread helps make a brilliant
tapestry that continues to be the envy of the world.
Stronger Safety Nets
Resilience and determination alone cannot overcome all crises, but weaving those strengths with targeted advocacy often can.
The Social Work profession has a distinguished history of not only providing social safety nets to the most vulnerable, but
also challenging systems that impede social mobility.
Positive Futures
Stories of hope in the face of tragedy share a common theme: better times are ahead. Illness, loss, abuse, and poverty shape
our lives in profound ways, but how we learn to deal with each circumstance can determine how much those experiences de-
fine our limitations—or our opportunities.
