It was obvious McGregor did her home work well as she spot- lighted Marge’s achievements, which began in 1961 at Kona Lanes. Marge learned to bowl at Kona in 1961, via instruction by Jane “Tiger” Randel, and in 1962 she became interested and involved with the Orange County Womens Bowling Association. She became a Director for Kona and Mesa Lanes and then advanced to the office of O.C.W.B.A. secretary for eight years. In 1995, she retired and was awarded Life Membership. Marge was inducted into the Southern California Bowling Writers Hall of Fame in 1998. When Orange County hosted the WIBC Tournament and Con- vention in 1986, Marge met Mr. Noda, BPA member of Japan and proprietor of a 32 lane center. Mr.Noda extended an invitation to American bowlers to travel to Ja- pan and Marge recruited 24 bowlers to make a “Good Will Group” tour to Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. Marge’s special talents are of great value to ABC, WIBC, Mas- ters and Queens tournaments as translator and tour guide in the USA and Japan. Also, she is a great photographer. Throughout the induction ceremony, Marge displayed that incredible smile that can light up a room. George, her beloved husband, stood by beam- ing with pride and Marge appre- ciates how much he has supported her through the years. They have four daughters, seven grandchil- dren and a multitude of friends. The festive day of colorful bal- loons and picture taking con- cluded with hugs, congratulations, and refreshments of cake, coffee and punch being served on the oncourse. She was presented kodak moment album. ORANGE COUNTY–An- other member of our bowling family has passed. On 1-20-05, Elizabeth Ann (Beckie) Miller, joined the ULTIMATE team, “THE LORDS ANGELS”. LAS VEGAS–Steve Smith along time ABTA member, andvery fine bowler finally won hisfirst ABTA title and a nice$5,500 1st Place Check winningfrom the top seed of the top 32single elims and finally down-ing upstart Jo Jo Mateo in thefinal game for the first ever Or-leans Title.

Steve topped 500 entrantswhich generated great payoffsfor the bowlers who enjoyed itthere at the Orleans to be sure. This was the first Orleans OpenEvent for the ABTA which al-lowed new members up to a 208average and several joined usthere. We had bowlers from sixdifferent states participate.Hence they are now eligible forall ABTA Events.

It was just super at the Or-leans and everyone was treatedfairly as we had a separate (cut)Qualifying board each daywhich took 1 in 5 1/2 entrantsto the semis.

The scoring was contentiousand with separate qualifyingboards daily and the 500 entrantswe saw 103 Semifinalists taketo the lanes, as they qualified forthe semifinals in hopes of mak-ing the Top 32 single Elim fi-nals which are very exciting. The top 32 has 7 ladies guaran-teed.

In the Semis we saw SanDiegan Steve Smith hit up thelanes with a huge +155 whichcatapulted him to the Champi-onship match so he would sit outand wait for a winner to chal-lenge him for the title. In sec-ond was Las Vegan BerwynRemulla with his fine +151 andhe would sit out in the first roundof the finals and enter in the sec-ond round or top 16.

Losers in round one of thetop 32 single elims were MinhDang, Jing Lebaquin, ChrisRomero, Deborah Sanders,Mike Nakunz, Ken Seiple Jr.Romy Cajucom, GregKokanour, Ceazar Moore, DinoCantoria, Vic Hilvano, Scott DeLorge, Anita Smith (champ’smom) Claude Dottin, and TomasLicauco. They finished in 18-32nd places and got checks of$200.

In round two we saw MartyNakunz, Michael A. Morgan,Sol Cericos, Robert Mercado,Imee Ohorro, Bart Sanchez,Roberta Nakunz, and ErnieJuarez lose out and they cashedin 10-17th places and garneredchecks of $245.

Round three heated up as JoJo Mateo edged Tessie Sanicolas226-213, Bobby Alvarado gotby Darilyn Walker 191-178, Ja-son Choi bumped Chito Biel236,215, and Mike Galvansmacked Berwyn Remulla 226-160 so the losers of round threegot checks of $305 for the finebowling.

Round four saw Jo Jo Mateoand Bob Alvarado go at it in areal good match and at the enda 7-10 split by Alvarado (BadBreak) and a clutch double byJo Jo won got the win 238-229and in the other match we sawChoi dig deep and best a tappedGalvan 226-161 so Michael, andBobby two of our Citrus BeltMembers were 4th and 5th and$400 each with a great showingat the Orleans and now wewould see Mateo, and Choi meetfor the right to bowl for the titleagainst Steve Smith.

In this game we had theyoung gentleman from DalyCity (Choi) and the new retireeMateo of Long Beach and theywere ready for a chance to winit all, and Choi led it off and af-

ter five frames it was Choi by 7scant pins and both bowlers hadonly one open but in frame eightChoi lost his shot and got a threecount and six out and Jo Jo hadthe lead by 10 pins and Choiwould need a double or help inthe final two frames and hethrew a perfect strike in the ninthframe, and as Mateo was fin-ished Jason would need the firstin the 10th plus great count forthe win but he went a bit widetrusting his shot and got a fivecount so Mateo advanced by a184/213-166/202 score and Ja-son was third at the Orleans and$1,000 with Jo Jo to have a shotat the title versus top seed SteveSmith.

The title match was set onlanes 3 and 4 and Steve electedto start the match and he did witha strike and it was on and Jo Jothen spared. Steve came back todouble, then Jo Jo was stayingclean through five frames but hehad one problem as Steve sparedin the 3rd then struck in frames4-5-6-7 to take a nice lead. Itlooked dim for Jo Jo but here hecomes right back with strikes inframes 7-8-9 and only trailed by8 pins (hcp dif.) and had achance to take the lead but in the10th came up high leaving the3-6-10. He then missed thespare (his only mishap in the fi-nals and Steve had the win as JoJo finished 190/219 and Steveended at 232/235 with his markin the 10th and the title went tothe power bowler from San Di-ego and also a $5,500 prizewhich was so deserving. Stevereally bowled well and he de-served this one but he will tellyou it was not easy as Jo Jocould have got him at the end.Well, Steve it is about time!Steve has been with the ABTAfor about 7 years and saw manyfriends, and even brother Scottwin! Steve and Scott now havesomething in common as theyare both ABTA/ Las VegasChampions as Scott won lastJuly at the Gold Coast. ABTA notes: Tournament Hi Qualifiers wereLarry Spires who blasted a big +174 and PrettyJoy Espiritu and Deb Sanders tied for the ladiesat +104, so they both get paid entries into anyregular ABTA Event.

The Optional Doubles were taken by two ofthe “Bowling Romeros” Chris and Gil and theirfine 1443 got them $200 and we paid 16 places, and $1,530 in the doubles.

Last up in the 3-6-9 roll off was Bobby Galvanand he missed the $1,300 so we will go for$1,500 this Saturday at West Covina Lanes inour One day event there.

The Match Series was drawn by Larry Spires, and it was matched by ABTA regular, the affablePeter Arsenault of Carlsbad and he collected acool $1,022 for his $2.00 entry and Pete wasbuying the beer. We will estimate the Series tobe $275 this week at West Covina.

The Match game 3 was Un matched as the299 drawn by Smith was unmatched. BillFigueroa’s 299 game was in game #2 so withthe carryover of $2,570, the Match Game willbe worth the cap at West Covina and $3,500 thisSaturday.

Chartingthe Champ Dennis Barrett lov-ing the lanes started with a sparethen posted a big five bagger, anine count spare in the seventhframe and happily swung out ona second five bagger posting abeautiful 269/291 for the Cham-pionship. Second place gentle-man also a lefty ArnoldCheesman swung out on a threebagger looking great but as fatewould have it stuck a seven ninesplit he didn’t convert in thefourth frame. Still in the huntlooking good he came back ona four bagger wanting to stretchhis strikes but settled for a sparein the ninth doubling in the tenthfor a very well shot 244/254 forsecond place. CongratulationsGuys. It was a fun match withlots of applause from Donkeelook-ee-loos for both lefties.Seeya at Cal Bowl Jan. 29-30'th.

by Tony RodriguezDOWNEY–Before we get started on the action in

the Brunswick Invitational, first, a little lesson in highsand lows. Last week I shot 770 to lead all scorers andmy team to a four game sweep. This week I not onlycost us a victory in game one with a split in the 10thframe, but failure to pick up one of the two remain-ing pins I couldn’t even salvage the tie.

Final tally Them 896- Us 895. I guess it’s just likemy Daddy always told me, “Son, sometimes you getthe bear and sometimes the bear gets you.”

Pro Approach/Downey (14-2) took 3 fromThreadworks (11-5) on the strength of DroopyDrapeau’s entrance into the 700 club. Carey Matkincontributed nicely with a 691.

Aside from all the extra curricular activities thematch was close with the outcome of games one andthree being decided on the last ball. These teams getto try it all again next week.

Etonic and Royal Alliance also matched up wellon the pair next door with three nail-biters of theirown. Etonic bagged three big ones 893-907, 876-846,830-822.

Armando Zavala displayed his liking to the gener-ous supply of lane oil with a gimungous 245,279,247-771. The Alliance’s Vayle Floria(739) and RamiroGarcia (670) gave it their all, but barely squeaked outa win in the opening game. Moving over to the nextpair, Rebacks Plumbing (10-6) took three games fromLinder Ins. (8-8). Jason Carillo hit the jackpot (777)enroute to the session’s high set.

Rookie Scott Slocum flexed his muscles to post asolid 708. Linder Ins. shot decent and managed toput it all together in game 2 to avoid being swept923-803. Nick Smith and Wesson fired a solid 712 tolead his team.

Strolling down to the next pair, ( Boy, this posi-tion night, every night, really keeps you on your toes.To win, you have to beat the hottest teams comingyour way every week) Team Storm (10-6) after stum-

bling out of the gate is making their move at the halfwaypoint on the backstretch. Arnold Cheesman (691) and NoliValdeleon averaging 175 on the year, shooting 651 heldup their team for a 3-1 thrashing of Exacticator Vise.

Bowler’s Depot Lake Forest (9-7) took advantage of ashaky start victory in game 1 to demolish Western Pacific(5-11) by over 500 pins on the night. Chris (solid) Oakes(715) and Miami Vice Don Johnson (681) teamed upnicely for the slaughter.

Turning to the “B” Side, ( Imagine my best Gomer Pyle)Surprise, Surprise! Transcontinental Logisitics won 4more. Not in any spectacular fashion, just everyone do-ing the right things at the right time. Steve Schroederbowled the team’s low game on the night, 194. (Yawn,Ho hum) Steve Brode (691) led the scoring. And theTransloggers just Keep on Truckin’.

TD Rowe (12-4)just moved into the lead for the round(Trans Log is already in. Non-round winners vying for ashot don’t have to be ahead of them to take the round. Butthey may have to somehow win some games from themto outlast the others competing for the “B” Side). JulioVasquez (726) led the Rower’s who handed the broom toJC Spas.

A masterful 289 in game three netted him a stack ofcash as he took the side pot for $110 and the Super foranother $350.

Boulevard Brakes (11-5) didn’t need many as they putthe skids to Freek Racing. JC Crane (641), MikeCammarata (685), Jason Hoppe (go lucky) ( 668) and GregNeuer (694) enjoyed a strikingly rich evening. Next weekthey battle a tough Strike Connection team, whom by theway also have won a round, in an attempt to stay near theleader board to capture the round.

Good luck to all next week. It’s turning out to be apretty exciting round. As always, the public is invited tocome on down and enjoy some of the best league bowl-ing competition has to offer.

Special kudos to Levi Slocum for the 7-10 split con-version!

Chip Willett Wins The Regular DivisionTitle in the WCST-Luster-Cote-Ebonite

Singles at AMF-Bowlium LanesDoug Johnson is the Super Senior Champion

By Dick SandersMONTCLAIR — Our first WCST Singles Tournament for 2005,

turned out to be a big success, as the original format of two divi-sions worked out very well for the first time since the end of 1999.The Regular Division Title was won by CHIP WILLETT (Vista),and his 4th WCST Championship. He had qualified 2nd on Satur-day, and rolled the only 300 game of the tournament. Starting out38 pins behind National PBA Champion and 11 Titles in the WCST,Ron Winger became a see-saw battle between both bowlers for thelead especially after game 6 of the 10 games bowled. Chip rolled2410 for the 10 games, and won 9 of the 10 matches he bowled.Ron rolled 2380, but won only 5 of his 10 matches. The differenceof the tournament was Chip beating Ron by 112 pins. Chip was upby only 28 pins going into the position match, Chip beat Ron, 277to 223.

National PBA Champion, and 14 WCST Titles, Barry Gurney, bowling his first WCST Tournament in two years made a big movein the final 4 games, by bowling 1050, winning all 4 of his matches, and finishing in 3rd place of the tournament.

Russell Booth, started in last place and finished a very strong4th, beating Joe Staton by one pin.

The Top 3 places in the finals: 1st, Chip Willett, $1000.00, 2nd,Ron Winger (Westlake), $750.00, and 3rd to Barry Gurney, (W. Hills),$600.00. 21 checks was paid out for this tournament with the origi-nal two divisional format returning to the WCST.

The year starts with a pay-off of $7,530.00 for 55 entries, 42seniors and 13 super seniors. Total over-all pay-offs for 216 tour-naments is $2,378,553.00.

Our Thanks to our sponsors, Jan and Sue Niblett of Luster-CoteInc, their 16th WCST sponsorship and the addition of $500.00 tothe prize fund, as well as our all around coverage sponsor, EboniteInternational, now in their 2nd year of sponsorship of the WCSTtournaments. They donated two more bowling balls, that were soldat the tournament site. There is $575.00 in the end of the yeartournament fund, as the goal will be $2500.00 added for the finalsingles tournament of 2005.

We also like to thank, Mr. Tim Berry, the GM of the lanes, avery hard working man, and his workers who helped us in everyway possible to make this tournament the success that it was. Tim,since taking over as GM, has brought back a lot of business to thiscenter. 33 bowlers enjoyed the $5.00 special sandwich and softdrink or coffee special after the 1st 5 game block on Saturday. Thanksto Jerry the lane maintenance man for all of his help also.

We have new bracket people, and for the first time out did agood job. Marilyn Nelson-Gray, and her husband Rodney will beat most of our tournaments in So. California this year.

SUPER SENIOR NEWSDOUG JOHNSON (Long Beach), will turn 77 years of age on

JAT Farm Clubby David Gordon

SAN DIMAS - ChaparralLanes hosted the last regulartournament of the 2004-2005season of the JAT Farm Club. Now two tournaments ago, thegroup cranked it up to over 180average for all. But this pastSunday, the thirty-sevenbowlers turned up the heat evenhigher.

Now there could be severalreasons to running up a 188.94tournament average, the highestaverage of the season, and youcan take your best pick. 1) Theyenjoyed the feeling two tourna-ments ago so much they wantedto keep it going, 2) It was thelast regular tournament of theseason, 3) Many were gettingready for the move up to theOpen division next season, 4)The center shoot was very fa-vorable, and 5) I was absentfrom most of the tournamentbecoming a grand-father. I be-lieve it was the last reason, butdon’t get excited, I’m not goinganywhere for long.

Now imagine you’re bowl-ing the JAT Farm Club and youaveraged over 199 and didn’tmake the cut. Now that’s aneye-opener and prompts you tocome back a little better. Hereis how they did it.

The qualifying high gamecame in from newcomer RickyHoohuli with 223-275. Wel-come to the Farm Club. Otherswith reportable high scores wereTyler Hirashima 268, JamesHawkins 231-266, J.D. Pelow224-256, Aarik Torres 221-248,Natalie Jimenez 245-229-225,Jimmy Sandusky 226-245, SeanKinrad 244-236, J.R. Monteith234-244, Brian Gonzales 241,Matthew Harris 235-221-224,Jasper White 235, JavierHernandez 235, Brittany Page235, Casey Landers 234, JeremyGlover 226-233, April Lebaquin

232, Kevin Wilson 228, DaytonCrossley 227, Tommy Neuzil222, Matt Cormack 221 andRyan Aguilar 220. What a greatlist. The leader after five gameswas Harris at plus 90 while ittook a minus 3 to dance somemore.

Match play started off thesame way as Cormack broughtin the tournament high game.Just a little something called aPerfect 300, his first. Matt thenwent on to add a 267, congratu-lations. More high scores fromMichael Fukuda 269, Harris248, Torres 227-227-247,HIrashima 241, White 247-237,Glover 231-233-224, Jimenez224-225, Monteith 224, Hoohuli223 and Sandusky 223. Torresmade the most of match playgoing from 15th on in to the fi-nals. And you guessed it,Cormack was now the leader atplus 286.

The finals started off with 5thseed Fukuda (+177) meeting upwith 4th seed Glover (+196). Inthis match, Fukuda was just toomuch and looked like he wasgoing to give us our second per-fect game of the day. In the end,Fukuda 298-277 and advancedto meet 3rd seed Torres (+209).Fukuda advances one more timewith a 211-164 win and now met2nd seed Monteith (+232). Hereis wall came up as Monteithclaimed this match 225-186.Now in the final match we haveMonteith versus Cormack withboth trying to revisit the cham-pion circle. When it was all overMatt Cormack held on to a 223-208 victory and his second ca-reer Farm Club title. Once againcongratulations Matt.

Our next tournament will beon February 6th at BrunswickCovina Lanes. This will start ourseason ending special tourna-ments, with this one being theJAT Doubles tournament. Themajor restriction to this tourna-ment is that NO TWO TITLE-

HOLDERS can be teamed to-gether. Title-holders is definedas any title obtained any seasonin any JAT division.

Bowlers started emailing/calling in your doubles teams,to any JAT director. We are lim-ited to 50 teams and have al-ready signed up about twentyteams. The doubles sign-upsheet will also be available nextweekend at both Stars locations.

So until then, get your restand heal those wounds. Workon your game and be ready forthe excitement. I’ll see you intwo weeks.

MOUNTAIN TIMEBy DICK STOEFFLER

LAS VEGAS, NV — Theoretically, Ol’ Steff is on a twice-a-month column schedule during our current medical endeavors. Thus, this is a short “bonus”, or, “is that miserable #@*$^& here again?”Just a couple fast notes:

* Hidden in a crevice of a recent Bowling News was the mes-sage: “Carol Mancini, Editor/Owner of the paper will receive theprestigious Alberta E. Crowe Award in Tulsa next April.” The honoris bestowed by the National Women Bowling Writers. No head-lines. No nothing’. But then, that’s Mother Mancini. Always a su-perb job, but as usual, behind the spotlight. Congrats, Carol, it wasmost deserving. (It is also a token for having to sort out and censor“Stuff from Steff!” Prior winners could well have been Alan Post,Joe Lyou and Bob Johnson. Hey! I gotta be good for something!)

* Major kudos to Marge Miyoda on being inducted into theOrange County Hall of Fame at La Habra “300” Bowl on 1/15/05.Marge was not only one of the most worthy to ever be named tothe Hall, but she was one of three ladies who somehow saved thesuper-sized Jim Dressel, Bowlers Journal Editor, in mid-fall fromthe stands at the U.S. Open telecast at Fountain Bowl. It wasn’t anissue in the H of F vote, but it was an epic feat. His weight and aperfect score in bowling (one game, not a series as some suggest)are in the same neighborhood. Having him falling on you wouldmake anyone cringe...but not Marge and friends! Marge has doneso much for our sport, I couldn’t list it all in the pages of this issue.

* The PBA Sunday morning talk show...er...occasional bowlingactivity show, sunk to a new level on Jan. 16 with one of the sillieststrikefests ever on TV. Viewers are tuning-out en masse.

* So...to Marge and Carol, congratulations! To the PBA...wakeup! Fix the show! If you can’t figure it out, call me. We have lots ofexperience.
