    Groups 2 & 3

We can often use either can I or can you to make the same request.

For example, Can I see your identification? is the same request as Can

you show me your identification? Rewrite the questions to make the

same request in a different way.

    1. Can you give me my badge?

    __________________________________________________

    2. Can I get your signature in the logbook?

    __________________________________________________

    3. Can I check your purse?

    __________________________________________________

    4. Can you show me your drivers license?

    __________________________________________________

Group 3: Writing about Security Protocol

Write about the security protocol for your building. Write about the

steps that you take to check-in with security every day. Do you have to

show your badge or do you scan it? Do you sign a logbook or do you clock

in? Do you go through a gate or a door when you check-in? What

happens if you forget your ID? Do you think the security protocol at

your worksite is sufficient? What could be improved?

VOCABULARY: Circle any security terms you do not know. Then compare with a partner.

Which of these terms could you use at your workplace?

    check-in unlock logbook gate signature

scan sign-in sheet protocol clock in clock out

    ALL GROUPS: Conversation Strips

Cut out the conversation strips and have students work in pairs to put

the conversation in order. Have students identify which sentences are

said by the Janitor and which are spoken by Security. Give fewer strips

to lower levels. When they are finished, students can role play the

conversation in pairs, with higher levels expanding the roleplay beyondthe strips. Lower levels can copy their conversation in order onto

another piece of paper. Ask some pairs to present in front of the class.

    Hello, I need my badge.

    Can I see your identification?

No problem, here is my ID.

Thank you. Heres your badge. Can you please sign?

    Ok, where is a pen?

Heres one. Now you can go in.

Thank you. Have a nice day.

    Level 3: Reading Continued

    By Juan Molina

I was the janitor for the offices of Local 1877 in Oakland. I was

getting toilet paper for the bathrooms in another room when I heard a

loud crash. I thought it was a lamp breaking. I ran into the room and

saw broken glass. There was a man who was using a big rock to break

the window. I think he wanted to steal the computer.

I called 911 and the police came. One of them spoke Spanish, but

not well. I called Patty, the office manager, and she spoke to the

police too. We called the owner of the building, but he never came.

We had to leave the window broken, with just cardboard to cover it.

You get scared when something like that happens. You dont know

what to do. It was ugly. Now I always try to come early and work

fast. That way I can finish before it gets dark.

Theres a lot of crime in this area. And the organizers work very

late. I think thats one reason the union is moving its offices.

Unfortunately, when they leave the owner will probably hire a non-

union company. Im going to lose my shift here. Luckily, I still have

    another job during the day.

    Level 3: Past Progressive

When we tell a story about something that happened in the past, we give the contextof

the situation using the ingform of the verb.

For example, in his story, Juan describes the context of the break-in using the ing form:

I was getting toilet paper for the bathrooms in another room when I heard a loud

    crash.

Context = Juan was getting toilet paper

Fill in the following sentences with the ingform of the verb in the past. Make sure you

    use was!

Example: I was cleaning the windows when I saw a suspicious man.

    1. I __________________ (take) out the garbage in the computer lab when I

    noticed a computer was missing.

    2. I __________________ (vacuum) in the lobby and I saw someone trying to

    break-in to my friends car.

    3.

Manuela __________________ (wash) the windows on a ladder when she fell and

    broke her leg.

When we use the ing form for we, you or they, instead of was, we use were. Fill in

the following sentences with the ing form. Be careful with was and were!

Example: We were driving to work when we got in a crash.

    1. We __________________ (have) a safety meeting when there was a fire alarm.

    2. You __________________ (dust) the computers in the computer lab when you

heard a loud crash in the room next door.

    3. I __________________ (eat) lunch when I heard someone calling Help!

    4. Enrique and Maria __________________ (talk) when suddenly a client had a

    heart attack.

    Level 3: Past Progressive Continued

Decide whether to use the ing form or the simple past in the following story.

    Be careful with irregular verbs!!

I have been working on the night shift at Microsoft for five years. One night I____________________ (mop) the bathroom floor when the building

____________________ (start) to move. The earthquake

____________________ (last) for three minutes, but it seemed like forever.
