One only needs to visit with Tolbert for a short time to feel the same deep love for our 16th President. “I havebeen greatly influenced by the ‘moral code’ Lincoln lived by,” Chisum said. “I’m not a Lincoln scholar, and I’mnot a historian. But I love Lincoln and what he stands for. I read constantly about him, and when you studyLincoln as much as I do, it becomes part of you.”

Before moving back "home" recently, Chisum served as chairman, president and CEO of the Abraham LincolnPresidential Library Foundation. He will share stories and pictures of the items in the Lincoln collection that hepurchased.

Rotarian Tolbert will be introduced by Judy Kelfstrom.

It is appropriate that the lead project of ourCentennial International Service focus is theclub favorite of layettes for Nicaragua.Chairman Sharon McCabe and her ablecommittee have acquired all the necessaryitems to fill the bags, purchased the bags, and are planning an evening for clubmembers to work together to assemble the100 bags to be shipped to Nicaragua.

Jim Kite, founding director of Hope and ReliefFoundation, was keynote luncheon speakerto our club and the delegates of the LargeClub Conference and spoke about the verysuccessful layette project, in which our clubhas been involved, that serves pregnantwomen in Nicaragua who were found waitingin parks outside of the hospital to have theirbabies. The layette project grew out of Hopeand Relief Foundation's efforts to establish amaternity waiting house. The layette bagsprovide necessary goods to care properly fortheir newborns. By providing this type ofcare, the group is able to ensure that thenewborn children are properly cared for, thatthe infant mortality rate has declined to zeroin that particular area, and that the childrenlater go to schools and become self-sustaining and contributing members of thecommunities.

Membership Recruitment Campaign Kick-offThis Wednesday, the membership committee will kick off arecruitment campaign. We need your help!

A few questions and answers:

Q: Why do we need to recruit new members?A: A Rotary Club is a continually evolving organization. Membersexperience life and/or job changes, move from the area, or for otherreasons can no longer be active in the club. In order to maintain thelevel of service to the community that we wish to make, it’s critical tocontinually add new people who share the ideals of Rotary.

Q: Who is eligible to become a member of the Rotary Club ofBeaumont?A: Community members of good character and good business, professional and community reputation, and:

Serve in a management or executive capacity of a business orprofession and have discretionary authority over his/herschedule; orRetired from any such position; orA community leader who has demonstrated a commitment toservice and the Object of Rotary; orA Rotary Foundation alumnus (former GSE team member,Ambassadorial Scholar, etc.) who lives or works in SoutheastTexas.

Q: What can I do to help?A: This Wednesday, bring names of people who you think wouldbenefit from being a member and who would be an asset to the workof the club. Each table will come up with a list of potential newmembers.

Dear Friends:

I have a confession to make. When I first learned I was going to the Large Club Conference in Beaumont,Texas, (where the heck is that???), I had some serious reservations. I kept thinking about all the other ways Icould use those four + days. Beaumont was not the easiest place to get to....it took three plane flights plus a 90minute bus ride. I was skeptical, to say the least, when I stepped off that bus last Thursday. Then, the magicbegan. I was immediately impressed with the friendliness and organizational skills of the Beaumont Rotariansand the staff of the Elegante' as we checked in. I quickly learned that I was going to be a part of a fun, wellorganized, high energy conference in a first class facility. I loved every bit of my Beaumont experience:

Michael Clayton was a classy host/moderator throughout. The breakout sessions were well organized and beautifully managed by the Beaumont volunteers. Each

moderator was a good listener and kept the sessions moving along. The food was fantastic.....and there was a ton of it! I still close my eyes and see those delicious brownies,

cookies, cinnamon rolls, pretzels, etc.The hotel staff was friendly and on the ball. Our keynote speakers, Jim Kite and Joe Wiegand were simply outstanding. They were inspiring, entertaining

and thought-provoking.The transportation was well thought out and highly organized. The social events were fun and run very smoothly.

So, all in all, it was a fabulous conference. But wait, the number one factor that made this a conference toremember......the hospitality of the Beaumont Rotarians was simply over the top! Every single member of yourclub presented the very best face of Beaumont, Texas. Y'all blew me away with your warmth, your charm, yourwillingness to go above and beyond. You were the pinnacle of a truly outstanding conference. Y'all made theultimate difference between a really good conference and one that was first class in every way. I am so glad to
