Meeting Wanneroo Tavern

President Norm: welcomed all members, Kaye Douglas, exchange students Anson

and Akin, and our Guest Speaker for this evening Past District Governor Rob Lyons

who will give his presentation on Rotarians Against Malaria or RAM for short.

International: Debbie Singh; Debbie is going up to Burma in 3 week’s time and she

has been collecting things to take up there including some funds for the renovations

and she is holding a fund raising event at her house on the 6th October Sunday

afternoon with a Thai Buffet and some drinks plus some costume jewellery for the

cost of $25.00 and all proceeds would be going to their fund. She was aiming to

raise $15,000 but has had to be more realistic as she is working full time so her

target is $10,000. The club has been asked to come forward with some funds for

this cause.

The swap meet has been on hold waiting for Clive Bain to come back from his

holiday as they were both involved in the discussions. They would be aiming for a

fortnightly event starting in November and the Edmund Rice volunteers have been

organised.

Youth Director: Owen; RYLA is coming up this year and the Geraldton Clubs are

showing some interest as they have had a great success in the past plus an

enquiry from the Kimberley’s also made contact. Owen has not approached the

Wanneroo High School as yet especially as they are our link school to see what

programs we can get involved in there.

Anson gave his talk on what he has been doing for the last week. He has been in

Australia for 2 months and 3 weeks. Last week he said it was terrible weather and

said that he had helped Jan Duffy to cook many potatoes. Many many potatoes. He

couldn't understand why they were cooking so many. He found out that they were

for the homeless people. He explained that Laurie at dinner time had come up from

the garden where it was very cold and wet and he was very cold. Anson realised

that Laurie must love his plants very much.

Akin said good evening to everyone and said he has been in Australia for 1

month. He wants to watch the Dockers play on Saturday. He went for Turkish

meal at a hotel last Saturday night and then went to his friend’s party for Rotary

Club. He hopes to play football next week and said he is very happy.

Owen explained that next week is farm week so we will check on how President

Norm is after the week.

President Norm made mention that both exchange students are now giving talks

without any written notes.

Very good effort by both of them.

President Norm explained that the Turkish meal at the hotel was; lovely soup, lovely

main course and lovely desert but words could not describe the foul coffee.

Vocational: Neil Cook; Next week we are at Paul's Winery so if anyone has any

guests that they want to invite please let Neil know so that he can organise the

catering for the evening. All chairs are o.k. but also advise Jacob about numbers.

Page 4: Rotary bulletin 12 2013

Dolphin Wishing Well: Clive Bain; he has been away but the takings have been

very good over the current period. We have installed a storage box for all of the

cleaning materials.

The Hillarys club poured the cement base for it and we are going to mount it. Clive mentioned that we have also received the 2 District Grants, one for the

Kingsway Football club and the other for Banksia United for uniforms etc. President Norm mentioned that Banksia United and the Kingsway Football club can be incorporated into the 4

th week meeting.

Debbie Singh mentioned that the Banksia United are going to have a formal awards night on the 6th of November so everyone will receive a formal Invitation from the coaches and it will be held in the Carramar Community Centre.

Raffle: We had a false start as the duty officers did not organise the raffle

butts to be available.

First Prize: Kaye Douglas Second Prize: Bill Kell

Attendance: Bill didn't have the sheet but Phil guessed it to be about 85%

Sergeants Session: Duty Officers, Raffle Winners, Bill was fined for his old

cafe of 12 years ago, charging $5.10 for a coffee, Andy was absent, Claremont

supporters, Phil had to fine himself due to borrowing money for the evening

and also for not returning something to Clive. Clive for being on holiday, Neil

paid last week so he was let off except for leaving his change at the bar, the

late Andrew for being late. Paul admitted that he too had to borrow so he

contributed. Owen explained how he pushed the envelope by going onto the

roof to replace some broken tiles. Unfortunately the rain started again so he

had to stay put until it stopped. Colin admitted he is a closet Dockers supporter

now they are close to the finals.

Chairman: Laurie Duffy; Laurie explained it was his great pleasure to

introduce Rob Lyons a current Rotary member at the Kalamunda Club and

also a past District Governor and is married with 3 sons and a daughter. He is

going to talk to us tonight about Malaria and what we can do about it.

Guest Speaker: Rob Lyons talk started with looking at the rubber gloves that he

had placed on the tables for all members to remind members that even if they are

Post Prostate to pass the message onto the younger members of the population

about the awareness and to

get checked. In regards to Malaria he had a lamp that blinked every 30 seconds

and that represent a child under 5 will die of malaria somewhere in the world. At

the conference about malaria it was discussed that a couple of things need to be

done.

We have to develop a vaccine as there is none available presently that lasts more

than 1 month. The target is by 2015 to have one that would give a 50% protec-

tion to last longer than one year and then by 2025 to have one that will have an

80% cover and to last longer than 4 years.

The other thing is the Rotary organisation has agreed to purchase $100,000 worth

of mosquito nets to distribute.

Page 5: Rotary bulletin 12 2013

The mosquitos have the malaria in the blood and they are most attracted to people with

smelly sox.

It is only the female of the species that bites. The female needs the blood to supply their

eggs. The males only suck the juices of plants etc so is not the problem.

The World Health Organization provide mosquito nets that are impregnated with

insecticide. The mosquito nets cost about $10.00 each.

It is the acknowledged fact that when Polio has been eliminated the main thrust will be

to attack the malaria problem. Rotarians Against Malaria R.A.M. has an Adopt a Village

Program which is a sensible, affordable and attractive initiative for clubs to make an

impact on village health by helping to prevent families from being bitten by mosquitos.

It is easy to participate and our club would receive acknowledgement with details and

statistics of the village we adopt and will be displayed on the Adopt a Village Website.

Nets are available in single, double and family sizes.

There is an established infrastructure on the ground to survey village needs, receive

and distribute nets and to supervise the follow up re-dipping. Funds are controlled and

distribution is done effectively through the Rotary Network.

There are many other things to be done to keep the mosquitos away from humans by

reducing the pools of water, streams and water containers where the mosquitos breed.

Rob became involved in the RAM project initially by going to the Solomon Islands to

build a home for the microscopy people working there on malaria. This house is still

standing today.

Rob closed his speech by asking if we could adopt a village. It is a massive project that

needs to be supported with this great humanitarian program.

During question time Tom Drinkwater mentioned that during the 11 years in Malaya we

lost as many national servicemen as bomber Command did in the Second World War.

186,000 died of dysentery and malaria. A very sobering thought……

Vote of Thanks: Neil Cook; Neil remembered as a boy that someone that returned from

New Guinea after fighting in the war suffered from malaria and every now and then he

would be bed ridden and he was never able to overcome the disease until the day he

died. The treatment used to be and I believe still is with Quinine.

Neil expressed the hope that our club can contribute in some way in the future for this

great project.

Neil presented to Rob our engraved glass in our appreciation for his talk this evening.

Page 6: Rotary bulletin 12 2013

President Norm complimented our hard working waitress Chanel on the great meals of

crumbed lamb cutlets and chicken dishes and to pass on our appreciation to the chefs.

17th November is the next Rotary Leaders Institute and is hoping we can have

some members attend this. Also Andy Anderson is not going to be President Elect

via Ian Hutton for next year and for members to consider who could be put forward.

President Norm closed the meeting thanking all members and guests with the singing

of our National Anthem.
