Focus Ver se

Suddenly, it’s spring and early summer and

the yard demands work. Mowing, mulching,

removing leaves from flower beds, planting

perennial and annual flowers, planting some

of the garden and then mowing some

more…… I don’t know about you, but in my

house, that just adds to an already full

week. But, it’s good exercise! Sure!!!!!!

This month is a time to celebrate

graduations (congratulations) and Moms

(with our love) and the ending of the school

and AWANA year. It’s a time to enjoy

barbecues, picnics, baseball games and

summer activities (and mow more grass).

Vacations are nearing and plans are being

made for those (and mow more grass).

Many activities are clamoring for our

attention and time.

Some things require regular routines (like

mow the grass). About this time of the

year, if you’ve made a commitment to read

the Bible regularly, you may struggle with

time to do so, with more and more things on

your calendar. The Bible doesn’t scream

“read me” but inside each believer we know

we SHOULD read it, but is there enough

time?

A few suggestions could be helpful at this

time of the year:

Youversion has reading plans for a few

days, month, or annual plans.

https://www.bible.com/reading-plans

You can also get a notice sent

to your phone or pad or laptop

that will remind you – and

that really helps.

Our Daily Bread is an online

daily devotional -

http://odb.org/

One other thing to consider is

your financial stewardship

during the summer months.

Many have found that online

giving is a great way to give

regularly and safely. Just go

to the church website http://

www.southridgechurch.org

and click on the $ at the

bottom of the page to create

an account. It’s easy and safe

and begins a regular pattern

of giving.

This month ends the AWANA

year and THANKS to the

AWANA team is appropriate.

Back in Sept. 2014, many of you

made commitments to help kids

in AWANA under Dave Ellis as

COMMANDER. WOW and

PRAISE THE LORD. Regularly

about 40+ kids each week, and

lots of workers have been

faithful this year – THANK YOU

and THANK GOD. With the

ending of the AWANA year,

there are opportunities on

Wednesday night for you to

grow, after having helped kids

for several months, including

adult Bible study every

Wednesday night at 6:45 PM.

Youth ministry continues each

Wednesday at 6:30 PM.

This past month, God brought

Travis & Lori Hopkins and Rick

and Tracy Six into the fellowship

of the Southridge family. And,

God has been bringing new guests

every week to Southridge. I am

confident that God is moving

among us in new ways and am

grateful for the privilege to be

called your pastor.

The mission of the JC Champions Mentoring Program is to encourage and support our students through positive one-on-

one relationships.

A mentor is a trained adult who, along with parents, provides a young person with support, coun-

sel, friendship, reinforcement, and constructive example.

The program takes place exclusively during the school day in 20 to 40 minutes sessions.

Mentors are good listeners, people who care, people who want to help young people bring out strengths

that are already there.

A mentor is not a foster parent, doctor, social worker, disciplinarian, tutor, cool peer, or ATM.

JCPS will provide you with training, support, & guidance throughout each step in your mentoring relationship.

To MENTOR can 659-3234 or 659-3488 To TUTOR call ABLE at 636-5558.

Bet you didn’t know. . .

Almost everyone knows “Jesus Loves the Little Children” but few of us have sung the three verses that

go along with that chorus. Nor do many realize that it was orginally a Civil War ballad.

Verse 1 Jesus calls the children dear, Come to me and never fear, For I love the little children of the world, I will take you by the hand, Lead you to a better land, For I love the little children of the world

Chorus Jesus loves the little children, All the children of the world, Red and yellow black and white, All are precious in His sight, Jesus loves the little children off the world

Verse 2 Jesus is the Shepherd true, And He''ll always stand by you, For He loves the little children of the world, He's a Savior great and strong, And He'll shield you from the wrong, For He loves the little children of the world

Verse 3 I am coming Lord to Thee, And Your soldier I will be, For You love the little children of the world, And your cross I'll always bear, And for you I'll do and dare, For You love the little children of the world

George Frederick Root was born into a large family in Sheffield, MA in 1820, and showed signs of musical

genius. By age thirteen, he boasted that he could play thirteen musical instruments. As a young adult, he taught

music in Boston and New York, and he also composed music and served as church organist. In 1855, he offered

a song called “Rosalie, the Prairie Flower” to his publisher for the hefty sum of $100. Root’s publisher, not

thinking it worth that much, offered Root a royalty plan instead. In time, Root grossed thousands of dollars from

“Rosalie” which helped establish him financially.

The outbreak of the Civil War deeply affected George, and he immediately began using his gifts to

advance the Union War effort, writing a host of patriotic songs to rally the morale of the North. As a serious,

classical composer, he was embarassed at the simple martial music coming from his pen, so he signed them

with the name “Wurzel” the German word for “Root”. Among his most popular pieces was a ballad, entitled,

“Tramp! Tramp! Tramp!”

In the prison cell I sit, Thinking mother, dear of you, and our bright and happy home so far away, and the tears They fill my eyes, ‘Spite of all that I can do, tho’ I try to cheer my comrade and be gay. Chorus: Tramp! Tramp! Tramp! The boys are marching, Cheer up, comrades they will come and beneath the starry flag We shall breathe the air again of the free in our own beloved home.

After the Civil War the melody remained popular, but the words were dated. A minister named Clare Herbert Woolston, a lyricist whom Root occasionally used, wrote new words and a Chorus, and that’s how a Civil War ballad about a soldier in prison became one of the most popular children’s choruses in history.
