Welcome to the Spring 2008 edition, the very fi rst edition of Goju no Seimei ~ “Th is Goju Life,” the journal of the Kokusai Goju Kobujutsu Kenkyukai, the International Goju Traditional Martial Art Research Society.Th e journal is here for the benefi t of you, the IGK members but it can only succeed if you all chip in to keep us informed about what is happening at a local level. EDITORIALAgain, welcome to the fi rst edition of Goju no Seimei ~ “Th is Goju Life,” the journal of the Kokusai Goju Kobujutsu Kenkyukai, the International Goju Traditional Martial Art Research Society.I can’t say it more plainly than I have on the front cover, this journal is here for your benefi t. But it will not be successful unless each and every one of you make a contribution to it each quarter (probably.) Don’t leave it up to the seniors, or expect that Hanshi can do it on his own, he can’t, we can’t. It’s up to you to make it real!Speaking of making it real. Th is has been a consistent theme of Hanshi’s the last few times I have spent time with him. Make your Goju-ryu real, the principle of hakushin (reality) making your kata and other dojo practice pertinent to the real world. In other words practicing each technique as though it was for keeps ~ how you practice, is how you perform in Jissen (real combat) ~ remember it’s your life, or the life of your loved ones that you might have to protect. If you need to, expand your training to add expertise in: Katame-waza (locking) Kaeshi-waza (reversals, of holds etc.) Kyusho-jutsu (lethal atemi or pressure point striking) Nage-waza (throwing) Osae-waza (controlling) Shime-te (strangling) Torite (grappling)But always remember to enjoy what it is that you are doing.I hope you enjoy Goju no Seimei and I look forward to hearing from you, births, deaths, marriages, it’s all important in the Goju family.

My very best regards,

NEWS FROM THE IGK SHIHANKAIDo you know what the IGK Shihankai is? It is a group of senior members of the IGK, Shihans, that meet with Hanshi to help him guide the development of the IGK. What we teach and how we teach it.There have been two Shihankai meetings in 2008. Th e fi rst was held in Brisbane at Sinn Chew’s business premise over the week end of 5-6 April.A big thank you to Sinn for making his offi ce available to us.There was much discussion both technical and administrative about the development of the IGK. Included amongst the many issues discussed were:

Dojo affi liation and the issuing of dojo registration certifi catesDevelopment of a new, consistent kyu grade certifi cate that is similar in style to the dan grade certifi cateHanshi also challenged the Shihans with fi nding, learning and showing him the value of bringing non-traditional Goju-ryu kata into the IGK as supplementary training.

The meeting was followed by a workshop at the University of Queensland dojo where Hanshi introduced the seniors to the fi rst section of kata Suparinpei.

Suparinpei ~ Under control?

Not really!

NEWS FROM THE IGK SHIHANKAI CONTINUED

The second Shihankai meeting was held in Melbourne on Saturday 2 August at Gary Chisholm’s business premise ~ a very big thank you to Gary for making the space available to us.Hanshi again talked about the need “to make it real” and to think about enriching the syllabus beyond the traditional Japanese, sports oriented way. There was also agreement on the need for an IGK world wide web presence and for a newsletter ~ and here we are!

Business DevelopmentFollowing the formal Shihankai meeting Vincent Busuttil and his right hand man Jeff gave a presentation on options for growing your dojo. All in all a very thought provoking session ~ many thanks to Vincent Shihan and Jeff !The following morning Sinn Chew from Queensland, Garry Fraser, Gary Chisholm and Vincent Busuttil, all from Melbourne underwent a grading. After several hours of pain and looking much the worse for ware all four were successful in being promoted. The day was rounded off by attending a grading for senior members of Vincent Shihans Bushinkan dojo.

After the Ordeal (L to R) Vincent Busuttil Houbai Shihan, Gary Fraser Shihan, Garry Chisholm Shihan, Hanshi, Alex Alt Shihan, John Collett Shihan, Sinn Chew Shihan

SOME TECHNICAL STUFF

Have you ever been in a training session when the person taking the class has said something like “No! your doing that wrong, I said to use KAKATO not SOKUTO” and you have thought to your self “what on earth is he talking about.”

Maybe this diagram showing the Japanese terms for the various parts of the foot and leg will help.

It might help to know the terms used for the diff erent parts of your uniform as well.

If someone calls out ~ “OK, let’s practice Sode Dori” this diagram will help you understand that they intend to practice escaping from a sleeve hold.

ALL ABOUT HANSHI

Hanshi leading training: Spring Gasshuku ~Muramurrang Resort

We all hold Hanshi in the very highest esteem. His knowledge and technical excellence are unsurpassed, his name is a catch phrase for all that is good in the martial arts, both here in Australia and across the globe.

This was proven to me personally recently when a chap I know in the UK said to me, “Chris Rowe was telling us about Tino Ceberano at a workshop the other day --- Is he really that good?” All I could do in response was puff out my chest and say; well, type actually because it was an online conversation; “Yes, he is!”

The down side of this for us in the IGK is that Hanshi is in great demand and is constantly travelling both here at home and abroad.

Just a few of the events he has been invited to in recent times include:

To lead sessions at SENI, the huge annual martial arts expo in England

To teach police and military personnel in Poland

To teach at the prestigious BudoSai at the Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre in England – looks like this years event has been postponed so we might see a little more of him!

Hanshi has also been off ered, and accepted a role as a Director of the Kokusai Kobujutsu Kenkyukai or International Traditional Martial Art Research Society, an organisation made up of some of the worlds great martial arts masters. In this role Hanshi will be visiting the World Karate championships in Tokyo this November to meet with his fellow masters.

As you can see the calendar below is quite empty. We need your input to fi ll it! So let us know what you have planned for the year ahead.

THE NAMING OF GOJU-RYUMiyagi Chojun Sensei’s senior disciple, Shinzato Jin’an, the man being groomed to take over Goju-ryu after Miyagi Sensei if only he had survived WWII, gave a performance of Goju-ryu kata at the All Japan Martial Arts Tournament which was held to celebrate the Coronation Ceremony of Emperor Showa (Hirohito) in 1930.

After his performance, Shinzato Sensei was asked which school of karate he belonged to. Shinzato Sensei could not answer that question for at that time there was no need to have a name for each karate style. On his return to Okinawa he told Miyagi Sensei about the encounter. Miyagi Sensei thought about this problem for a while. Finally, he decided that it was necessary to have a name for his martial art in order to promote and spread his art and also in order to cooperate with other schools of Japanese martial arts.

Miyagi Sensei named his art “Goju-ryu”, meaning “Hard and Soft School” after the precepts of traditional Chinese kempo. Miyagi Sensei was the fi rst master among the diff erent schools of karate to name his art. Although Miyagi Sensei called his art Goju-ryu, he seldom used the name nor did he put a sign with “Goju-ryu” written on it at the dojo.

In 1933, the art of Miyagi Sensei was formally registered as “Goju-ryu” at the Butokukai, the Japanese Martial Arts Association. Miyagi Chojun Sensei chose the name “Goju” from the third line of the Kempo Hakku a poem expounding on the eight precepts of quanfa found in the Okinawan Bubishi, a book on Quanfa or Chinese boxing. Th e line reads “Ho wa goju no donto su. ”

The following are the “Eight Precepts” in Chinese and their translation in English.
