GOJU NO SEIMEI NEWSLETTER OF THE

KOKUSAI GOJU KOBUJUTSU KENKYUKAI

EDITORIAL: Everyone Has the Right to My Opinion

This edition of Goju no Seimei is a little late, I had hopes of getting it out well before Christmas but I have been sidelined by the need for some surgery on my hip and some other issues – the pain killers made my head a no go zone for a few weeks – but all’s good now and I’ll soon be back to some light training – train hard, but please, LOOK AFTER YOUR BODY, it’s the only one you will get.

2016 was a big year for the IGK with many exciting times to be had. The highlights for me personally were the get together for Hanshi’s birthday and the running of the first IGK Kuatsu course with a number of people completing the first of the three kuatsu courses.

In the year ahead we will be travelling to Orange County in California for Gasshuku on the Memorial Day weekend at the end of May hosted by Roy Cadiente Kioushi with the possibility of a side trip to Purdue University in Indiana to visit Kevin Webb Shihan.

Keep your ears and eyes open for more details on this exciting trip.

As always, this newsletter relies on each of you letting me know what’s happening around the place so keep in touch.

Hanshi’s Birthday Bash

2016 was a milestone year for Tino Ceberano Hanshi. Not only did it mark his 75th birthday, it was also the 50th anniversary of his coming to Australia and teaching Goju-ryu karate, his Goju year As well as translating as hard/soft, goju can translate as 50: go 5 ju 10 To celebrate this significant event a two-day training symposium was held on the Gold Coast in Queensland over the weekend of 8 and 9 October 2016 with a party on the Saturday night for Hanshi’s birthday.

Kyoushi Alex and the Shihans

Sue and Remco Speekenbrink and Tim Hillman

The event was attended by not only IGK students from across the country and from Hawaii, but also by students and instructors from other styles, some of whom have known Hanshi for a very long time. The senior ranks of the IGK were well represented with Alex Alt KyoshiQld Shihans Jann AkiHawaii Noel PetersTas John RossVic Warwick SheilsACT John CollettSA Alan HeskethSA, Steve DareQld) Chris ClaytonQld Warren SmithNZ and 4th dans Remco SpeekenbrinkQld Sue SpeekenbrinkQld and Tim HillmanQld We were also honoured to have Professor Ray Lea 10th dan Hyou-ha Bankoku

Jujutsu Guros Elwyn Gabutero Doce Pares Eskrima and Colin Johns Shihan UMA Karate present.

Kata Training

Resistance Work

Training on Saturday started at 9am sharp “Goju time,” which is to say it started about 9.30am. After the initial welcome Hanshi took everyone through a warm up and basic drills. The training was then split into three stations that participants would rotate through. Various shihans were assigned to each station to deliver training on different aspects of Goju-ryu. Station one was Goju-kalis An integration of

Filipino martial arts with Hanshi, Shihan Chris, Renshi Sue and Jokyo Remco. Station two was Shihan Jan, Shihan Alan and Shihan Warwick who covered kata and kata-based drills. Station three was Professor Ray, Shihans JC and Shihan Steve who demonstrated locking and throwing applications from the kata Tensho. I know a lot the students really enjoyed watching Steve Shihan being thrown around like a rag doll.

Working on Bukedo

Saturday night was Hanshi’s 75th birthday party held at Alto’s with a Hawaiian theme, so plenty of colourful shirts to be seen. What a fantastic night! There was a live band and the food kept coming all night. Some special guests were able to make it along, including Richard Norton – one of Hanshi’s first students.

A 75th birthday can’t go by without some sort of special recognition. We managed to obtain all of Hanshi’s past black belts of significance and he was presented with a special gift on the night of these belts framed with a plaque under each noting its heritage. A special thanks to Greg Dries from the Redcliffe dojo for making this possible.

And what is a party without a cake? Sue Speekenbrink Renshi from Toowoomba arranged for a beautiful cake in the shape of gi top with the words “Gokurousamadeshita”ご苦労様でした which translates as “Thank you for your hard work.” Not only did it look good but tasted great as well. Again a big thankyou to Sue Speekenbrink Renshi.

The party went on late into the night with everyone having a great time, Hanshi even got to up to dance. Not surprising it was a group of Queenslanders who closed the bar – Chris, Maree, Steve and Debbie.

Hanshi, Master Lea, Warwick Sheils Shihan and John Collett Shihan caught talking story

Sunday saw a return to training with more group rotations. The focus in the morning was on Hanshi’s CAT system of training. Again we had three groups with each working on a different aspect of system. One group worked on hands with the resistance from elasticised cords, one group worked on kicks while working against an elasticised waist restraint to hold them back and the last group worked on sticking drills with focus mitts.

The afternoon session was broken into two groups that rotated between learning Tino Hanshi’s own creation, Kata Bukedo in Japanese or Daa’n Mandirigma in Filipino meaning path or way of the warrior and learning the Hawakan Single Tonfa

All in all the weekend was a great success with everyone coming together to celebrate Tino Hanshi’s massive contribution to the martial arts in Australia. At this point I would like to say a very special thankyou to Chris Clayton Shihan and Maree Clayton Sempai, whose hard work really brought the whole thing together.

Thanks in the main to the efforts of Greg Dries there were many photos taken over the weekend these can be found at:

TECHNICALLY SPEAKING: ZENPAKUSEN 前膊拈 FOREARM WHEEL THROW Ceberano Hanshi has often talked to us about the need to broaden our understanding of the “forgotten” aspects of our martial art in order to recover more of the “Classical” aspects of what was. He has talked about Gyaku-te, Karame-te, Katame-te, Nage-te etc.

Zenpakusen is an example of a nage-te 投げ 手 throwing technique that fits nicely with our

Goju-ryu karate.

There are many categories of throwing techniques as shown in the table bow:

CATEGORY: ! Forward ! Reverse ! Sacrificial ! Flying " Cyclonic " Take down " Come Along ! Lifting ! Winding " Locking

Zenpakusen is first and foremost a “cyclonic” throw, that is, it uses centripetal force to affect the throw and is therefore a very powerful technique. It also makes use of simple locking for control at the start and at the end of the throw.

Because a lock is applied at the earliest stage zenpakusen can be used as a “come along” to walk a person away. Equally, it can be used as a simple take down.

So let’s have a look at zenpakusen.

This technique takes it’s name quite literally from the mechanical aspect of the throw, which is to control the assailant’s forearm and then spin or “wheel” them around to throw them to the ground.

Zenpakusen is a very simple throw to learn and as it requires no weight bearing and uses cyclonic or centripetal power it is an excellent technique for the older practitioner and for those that are of a lighter build or shorter stature.

NOTE: Throws will be initially learnt in a “static” kata form before moving on to the more dynamic method described below.

DESCRIPTION OF ORTHODOX KATA

KEY POINTS 1. Pull semete’s the Attacker vertical forearm tightly into the chest

2. Keep the back straight until semete starts to fall

3. Maintain the kamate-zume until semete falls

4. Don’t let go of semete’s wrist so it can be used to manipulate semete in some form of follow up technique

Image showing method of capturing semete’s arm

1. Semete and ukete the defender face each other, semete in a left foot forward

stance and ukete in a right foot forward stance

2. Semete steps forward into a right foot forward stance and strikes at ukete with a right-handed chest-high punch

3. Ukete steps forward and a little to the left with the left foot and turns a little in a clockwise direction as he deflects the attack with a left-handed nagashi-uke followed immediately by a right-handed kaki-uke and captures semete’s arm at the wrist, converting the kaki-uke into Kaki-te and at the elbow by sliding his left hand over the top of semete’s arm to hook the bend of the elbow

At this point ukete forces semete’s wrist/hand into a variation of kamate-zume Sickle Hand Press for control

Images showing close-ups of the required arm and foot positions

4. Torite now steps towards semete’s centre with his right foot to place his own right foot between semete’s feet and as close as possible to semete’s right foot with the toes pointing to semete’s rear

Goju no Seimei ~ This Goju Life – 14 – Southern Summer 2016 Edition

5. Holding semete’s forearm firmly to his ukete’s chest with semete’s wrist still held in kamate-zume, ukete steps behind his own right foot with his left leg to initiate a fast counter-clockwise turn through about 135o to throw semete to the ground while maintaining a hold on semete’s wrist

NOTE: that at about one third of the way through the turn a slight bow forward at the waist by torite will increase the speed of semete’s fall The mechanics of the throw are such that as torite steps across behind to turn semete starts to move, then torite’s hips and finally shoulders turn accelerating semete’s movement along the way

6. As soon as semete begins to fall ukete reverses direction so that semetes elbow is locked agains ukete’s leg for submission

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS For safety in training ukete should take care applying the locks on semete’s wrist and must release the pressure as soon as semete submits.

SUMMARY Zenpakusen is a simple, powerful throw that works very well for a goju-ryu practitioner. Once learnt and understood it can be varied to a number of different applications.

The description above all sounds pretty confusing but when you are shown the techniques involved and practice them until you are able to apply them naturally with power and control you will find they are in fact very simple.

WHAT’S NEW AROUND THE IGK:A sneak peak at the near future

This article is a revision to the one that appeared in the last issue of the newsletter as there have been some changes to what was going to be implemented at that time.

I that article we described a new badge which celebrated Hanshi’s fifty years in Australia.

On review Hanshi has decided that this badge will be used for purposes such as letterhead and other “formal” documentation.

There is still a need for a new design to show clearly who is an IGK member or not. There are a couple of reasons for this.

1. There are former members of the IGK that use one of the many old badges, and

2. At a recent training night in Queensland five variations of the IGK badge were to be seen!

What follows is a partial extract from the soon to be available IGK Karate Dojo Handbook Volume 1 for Students and Teachers.

KISHO: 記章 INSIGNIA BADGES

The badges and other insignia identified below are the only ones to be worn by members of the IGK without the express permission of the headmaster.

These badges are available for purchase from the headmaster. Alternatively artwork can be supplied.

IGK BADGE Traditionally karate Kai-ha 会 派 Associations descended from Master YAMAGUCHI

Gogen Hanshi 山口剛玄 1909 - 1989 have commonly used a badge with the fist and/or

laurel wreath elements.

Images showing examples of the IKGA Gojukai badges

Indeed, since it’s inception the IGK, the Kokusai Goju Kobujutsu Kenkyukai 国際剛柔古武術

研究会 International Goju Classical Martial Arts Research Society has used a badge that contained those

elements.

Images showing examples of the old IGK badge

Unfortunately, a number of individuals and organisations that are not affiliated with the IGK insist on using this or very similar badges. As a result our headmaster took the decision to develop a new badge in order to distinguish genuine IGK members from those fraudulently using our symbols. The new badge is shown below:

The new badge includes the following design elements:

FIST: A retained element consistent with our traditional links to Yamaguchi Gogen Hanshi

LAUREL WREATH: A retained element consistent with our traditional links to Yamaguchi Gogen Hanshi

3 COMMA KAMON: This was the symbol of the former King of Ryukyu Okinawa and is symbolic of karate’s origins on Okinawa

GOJU-RYU KANJI: A retained element of the old IGK badge

RIBBON BELOW: A retained element of the old IGK badge but now providing a banner for “Goju-ryu” in Kanji

This badge, at around 7.5 cm across should be worn of the left breast of the uwagi.

There are three authorised versions of the badge:

CERTIFIED KODANSHA: Certified Kodansha, that is, holders of the Godan grade or higher are entitled to wear a version of the badge that has the individual leaves and the background of the fist embroidered with GOLD thread.

CERTIFIED YUDANSHA: Certified Yudansha, that is, holders of the Shodan-ho, Shodan, Nidan, Sandan and Yondan grades are entitled to wear a version of the badge that has the individual leaves and the background of the fist embroidered with SILVER thread.

CERTIFIED MUDANSHA AND UNCERTIFIED MEMBERS: Certified mudansha, that is kyu grade members, uncertified members and Associate members are entitled to wear a version of the badge that has the individual leaves are embroidered with RED thread.

AROUND THE DOJOS: THE CLAYTON’S GO TO JAPAN AND OKINAWA

Rather than a look at the Toowoomba Ronin Koreijo dojo 浪人これ以上道場 of Chris Clayton Shihan we have a brief review of some of the sights that they took in on their trip to Japan and Okinawa in May 2016

It was not until we went to Tokyo to the Sengaku-Ji Temple that we could say one site was enough for the day. We had read on many websites over the years and again on Trip Advisor that Sengaku-ji temple is well known throughout Japan due to it being the resting place of the famed 47 Ronin of Ako. One comment said it would take about 20 minutes look over the cemetery and there was a small museum to see as well.

We looked at the temple and took photographs at the temple gate. We then looked at some of the associated facets to the story of these Samurai. Such as Lady Asano’s donated plum tree dedicated to those 47 who loyally avenged her husband Lord Asano. Another plum tree was dedicated to Chikara, Samurai son of the leader and former Chief retainer to Lord Asano, Oishi seventeen at the time of the attack on Lord

Kira who committed seppuku two years later as he was not permitted to do it at the same time as his Ronin comrades due to his age.

Some of the graves of the 47 Ronin

We then purchased incense and went into the 47 Ronin section of the cemetery and placed incense quietly at each headstone. From there it was into the museum we saw artefacts of the attack on Lord Kira and a further display across the way and up some stairs where each member of this loyal band of warriors was depicted with a wooden statuette, 47 in all. We were surprised at how many older Samurai there were. One member was 77 years old. You are not permitted to take pictures of the statues, but we feel that the images of these warriors will be permanently tucked away in the album of our minds.

After seeing and taking this all in, Maree and I sat in the shade to decide if we wished to do more while in Tokyo we were staying in Osaka after taking 3 hours plus to get here on the bullet train. But we both had a strong sense of not needing to do anything else; being at Sengaku-ji was enough in its self, sort of satisfying if you will. We hopped back on the bullet train and travelled back to Osaka, content with our efforts. Sengaku-ji is that kind of a place.

ON TO OKINAWA Where we visited the World Okinawakan Karate and Kobudo Association dojo of ZAHA Masanori Sensei a senior student of NAKAMOTO Kiichi Hanshi. We loved the class and the people. The other senior instructor was a really strong lady and we were introduced to her first, then the students. After we had trained for an hour or so, they asked us to watch class for a while, and we noted their relaxed manner of training. Not suggesting less effort, quite the opposite, more so the teaching and practicing is fluid, effective yet still relaxed. Quite similar to our Filipino experiences.

Zaha Sensei and his dojo members

Zaha Sensei insisted on driving us all the way back to our hotel in Naha. We were very humbled and stunned by his generosity, considering we had only just met. When I mentioned Zaha Sensei’s gesture to James the owner of the famous Dojo Bar, he matter of factly replied “that’s Okinawa.”

It is safe to say that Okinawa has left a deep impression on us. We practiced the things that Zaha Sensei had taught each day at our favourite training spot near where Miyagi Sensei himself had taught. Something I will always remember as one of life’s martial arts memories.

Next we visited Hokama Hanshi at his Karate Museum in Nishihara.

Some of the weapons at his museum

Chris and Maree with Hokama Hanshi

As Hokama Hanshi hand brushed calligraphyfor us he initially spoke on it’s meaning, before long we were asked to show him various techniques of Karate and Katsu-ho according to our understanding. Next we were invited to sit and for the next hour or so, we were privileged to sit with a Goju-ryu master and have him share his insights into the hard/soft way. I have recorded these lessons elsewhere, but will never forget that hot afternoon in Nishihara, as the ink dried.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

SOME THOUGHTS FROM OUR FOUNDER The founder of Goju-ryu karate, MIYAGI Chojun Sensei was a wise man, not just because of the wonderful martial art that he bequeathed to us all, but because of the way he saw the world that we live in and the way that he guided us to live.

Below you will find some of his thoughts.

PATIENCE BY MIYAGI CHOJUN 1888 -1953 "You must, above all, learn the art of true and real patience. Follow the WAY of patience to the seventh power and never be in a hurry to learn.

Always think first and avoid acting rashly. Never harm anyone or let yourself be harmed."

PRECEPTS OF GOJU-RYU BY CHOJUN MIYAGI It should be known that secret principals of Goju-ryu exist in the kata.

Goju-ryu Karate is a manifestation within one's own self of the harmonious accord of the universe.

The way of Goju-ryu Karate is to seek the way of virtue.

THE SPECIAL MERITS OF KARATE BY CHOJUN MIYAGI (1934) A large space is not required.

It can be practiced alone.

Its practice does not require much time.

Men and women, young or old, can practice karate; it depends entirely upon one's constitution. Proper kata can be selected and practiced at one's discretion.

One can practice with empty hands or the use of simple equipment can also be employed without much expense.

Training in karate improves one's health. This fact is evident from the physical condition of aged enthusiasts.

Physical and mental unity develops an indomitable spirit.

THE FINAL TEACHING OF MIYAGI CHOJUN SENSEI
