It has been in existence for over 40 years and has been continually refined along the way to meet industry requirements. The course has been refreshed and refined to ensure it is completely up to date and will deliver more comprehensive knowledge than ever before. This is a result of amalgamating the SAIW Welding and Fabrication course with the IIW IWIP Basic course creating a world-class product.

The amalgamation will see students cover some of the following topics:• ASME VIII visual inspection aspects;• AWS D1.1 Welder Qualifications;• ASME IX Welder Qualifications;• NDT Reports;• Destructive Testing Reports;• WPS Review;

Upon successful completion of the SAIW Welding and Fabrication Inspectors level 1, the student will be issued with the SAIW Welding

and Fabrication Inspectors Level 1 qualification certificate and an internationally recognised and respected IIW IWI Basic Diploma.

Once a student completes their level 1 training, they are free to progress onto the SAIW Welding & Fabrication Inspectors Level 2 course as and when they are ready. The progression will enable students to enhance their curriculum vitae.

ABOUT INTERNATIONAL WELDING INSPECTION PERSONNEL (IWIP)

On completing the course, you will have extensive knowledge of welding and inspection theory and application. The course is presented in modular form similar to IWIP Standard and IWIP Basic i.e. there is a Technology module and an Inspection module that have to be successfully completed in order to attain the IWIP Comprehensive certificate.

Successful IWIP Comprehensive candidates will, amongst other things, be able to manage all Inspection activities; supervise IWIP Basic and IWIP Standard personnel developing and then giving them appropriate (on-the job) instructions; act as technical experts for the inspection function. People holding the IWT or IWE qualifications are exempted from doing the IWIP Comprehensive Technology module but are required to complete the Inspection modules from the IWIP Basic,

IWIP Standard and IWI Comprehensive courses and, on passing, they will have to go through an interview process, which, if they pass, will lead to them attaining the IWIP Comprehensive certificate.

IWI - Comprehensive LevelThe IWIP Comprehensive is the most prestigious and the highest level of the IWIP courses. Candidates who have successfully completed the IWIP Standard course and are in possession of two years’ Welding Inspection experience at the Standard level are eligible for the Comprehensive course.

Please note that any comments, compliments or complaints related to: 1. Training can be forwarded to [email protected] 2. Examination and Certification can be forwarded to [email protected]

In addition, there are many materials for the engineer to utilise including a large range of ferrous alloys ranging from steel alloys through to cast iron as well as non-ferrous alloys. Techniques have also been developed for welding plastics, ceramics and other exotic materials. The Appreciation of Welding course is designed to provide candidates with an overview of welding technology in order to understand welding better and make informed welding related decisions.

With increasing operating stresses and temperatures, use of new materials and innovative designs, engineers are finding it increasingly difficult to contain maintenance and fabrication costs due to their lack of knowledge of welding technology and related sciences. With increased knowledge of welding technology, it has been proven that substantial cost savings are possible.

Personnel in senior positions must have an appreciation of welding technology to ensure that maintenance, fabrication and construction work is being carried out effectively in terms of quality and cost effectiveness.

Welding is a complex subject with many welding processes available ranging from the traditional “stick” welding through to advanced processes such as laser welding.

SAIW has for a long time offered courses that lead to certification as a Competent Person (CP) for In-Service Inspection as well as for Inspector of Pressure Equipment (IPE) certification for all new construction and repairs through the respective SAQCC schemes. A need has now been identified for the certification of Pipeline Inspectors.

This new Piping Inspectors course is based on certification requirements similar to the Competent Person and Inspector of Pressurised Equipment, consisting of a one week theoretical course, followed by an examination. The candidate is then required to gather experience as a pipeline inspector prior to application for certification. It is also a requirement for the Inspector to have comprehensive knowledge of the South African legislation for Pressure Equipment, therefore it is a pre-requisite for the student to have successfully undertaken a Legal Knowledge course on the PER and SANS 347.

Successful candidates will have comprehensive knowledge on the requirements of International Pipeline and Piping Component Inspection standards, including failure mechanisms, safety devices, the requirements for new construction standards, and Inspection techniques followed by objective and supportive report writing.

Among others, the following International standards will be covered API 570, API 571, API 574, API 576, API 579, and ASME B31.3 and ASME B16.5 construction standards.

The South African Pressure Equipment Regulations (PER) requires that new and in service pipelines are categorized and conformity assessed in accordance with SANS 347.

ABOUT COMPETENT PERSONS TRAINING

These courses are also suitable for engineering personnel responsible for in-service inspection requirements according to the Pressure Equipment Regulations (PER). The qualification will ensure that the user’s responsibility in terms of the in-service inspection requirements of the PER are appropriately managed.

Competent persons perform the in-service inspections which are required by the Pressure Equipment Regulations (PER) according to the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Competent persons are required to be certified by the SAQCC CP certification body and it is an essential requirement that the candidates have successfully completed

an approved training course for certification.

Certification is available in two categories – pressure vessels or steam generators. In the case of pressure vessels, there are two basic sub-categories; limited or unlimited. Limited certification is aimed at those personnel working only in the field of inspection of compressor air receivers or small medical autoclaves. Other pressure vessel inspectors working in the industry, including refinery and process industries or power generation industries are required to have unlimited certification.

It is recommended that candidates should have a minimum of Grade 10 or an equivalent qualification and some relevant experience in inspection or operation of pressurised equipment,

however, all candidates will be considered.

Successful candidates will: have a basic knowledge of common welding processes used in steam generator manufacture and repair and the defects that may occur in original manufacture; have gained knowledge and understanding of the defects that arise in service and possible equipment failure mechanisms; have gained knowledge of the suitability of NDT test methods; understand the roles and responsibilities of the USER, the AIA in-service and the competent person inspector in complying with the in-service inspection requirements of the PER; have sufficient technical knowledge to be able to perform in-service inspection of steam generators.

The SAIW Competent Person courses are ideal for persons intending to work as inspectors for an Approved Inspection Authority (AIA) which has in-service inspection included in the scope of its accreditation and approval by the Department of Labour (DoL).

WELDING SYMBOLS COURSE INFORMATION

Welders that work with fabrication drawings must be able to interpret welding symbols to prepare the joint and apply a weld that meets the specifications. Welding inspectors must be able to read and interpret welding plans.

The welding symbol course provides a detailed review of the use of welding symbols in the fabrication environment.

The course covers the use of the European system for welding symbols (ISO 2553) as well as the use of the American system (AWS A2.4).

The course will also deal with the difficulties encountered in engineering design and fabrication workshops with the use of two different systems. Concepts covered in the course include orthographic views, joint types and weld types, basic joint geometry, key terms, and basic rules of welding symbols and non-destructive testing symbols.

The course covers all types of welds including groove welds, fillet welds, plug and slot welds, spot and projection welds, and stud, seam, surfacing, and edge welds.

This course is ideal for all fabrication personnel including welding supervisors, quality controllers and welding inspectors. The course is also ideal for personnel involved in engineering design as well as draughting and detailing personnel.

Welding symbols are used as a pictorial language to convey weld requirements. The weld symbol conveys to the fabricator the position of welds, type of joint to be used, the size of the weld and the amount of weld metal to be deposited.

IIW INTERNATIONAL WELDERCOURSE INFORMATION

The International Institute of Welding (IIW) has developed a training programme for welders where the IIW seeks to achieve harmonisation in the training, examination and qualification testing of welders globally.

The training and assessment is linked to the requirements of ISO 9606, which provides a scheme for qualification testing of welders. Internationally, and specifically in South Africa, industry requires welders with more skill for the sake of flexibility in production.

The International Welder programme provides a combination of comprehensive theoretical knowledge and high practical skills assessed by tests of increasing difficulty including ISO 9606 qualification tests and by theoretical examinations. The programme is presented at three different levels - fillet, plate and pipe welder.

Training times for practical welding vary from person to person; therefore the training times detailed on page 57 are based on previous training experience. It is possible to finish the required modules in a shorter period of time whilst some individuals may require additional training time compared to that indicated in the table on page 69.

Obtaining qualification for experienced welders

Experienced welders may enter the programme at any level. In order to obtain the qualification, the relevant theory training and examination will need to be completed along with all the relevant qualification (including lower levels, ie Module A & B) tests pertaining to the qualification required. Example: If a welder requires the International Pipe Welder qualification (all positions) for TIG welding, the theory modules and examinations (A, B, C & ST – 9 days) would need to be completed and the 5 qualification tests (Fillet,

Plate & Pipe) as detailed opposite. No practical training is necessary if the welder is competent to achieve the required quality standard as detailed in international standards (ISO 9606) for all the required qualification tests. Once an assessment has been undertaken on the welders skill level, an individual training programme can be specified which will be quoted individually.

Outcomes of training

Upon completion of the course, trainees will be able to demonstrate the required level of skill in accordance with ISO9606 or similar standard (ASME IX) and pass the required theoretical examination. Candidates will be able to produce basic Fillet, Plate and Pipe Welds with the chosen welding process depending on the level of qualification and have a basic understanding of the theory of welding. The graduating welder will be awarded with an IIW Diploma plus a Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ) as per International Standards.

South Africa is in need of high quality welding skills.

EDDY CURRENT TESTING COURSE INFORMATIONEddy current testing (ECT) is an electromagnetic testing method in which electromagnetic induction is utilised to detect any discontinuities. The basic requirement for eddy current testing therefore is that the material being tested or in the case of paint thickness measurement the substrate, should be electrically conductive. Eddy current testing can be regarded as both a surface as well as subsurface testing method since the depth to which the inspection can effectively be performed depends on the frequency of the excitation current, the electrical conductivity as well as magnetic properties of the material being tested.

The presence of magnetic saturation weak magnetic alloys, shielding or focussing nature of the probe as well as the display capabilities extends the technique description. The training course is based on general theory as well as sector specific applications relating, but not limited to, the following standards and specifications:

• ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code - Section V - Subsection A - Article 1 & 8• ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code - Section V - Subsection B - Article 26• ISO 15549 ECT – General principles• ISO 15548 Part 1 ECT – Instrument Characteristics and verification• ISO 15548 Part 2 ECT – Probe Characteristics and verification• ISO 15548 Part 3 ECT – System Characteristics and verification• ISO 17643 ECT – Welds• ISO 2360 ECT - Non-Conductive coatings – Amplitude sensitive equipment • ISO 21968 ECT - Non-Conductive coatings – Phase sensitive equipment• ISO 12718 ECT - Vocabulary

If this sounds like a mouthful, then we invite you to dust off your high school knowledge regarding electrical transformers and attend an ECT course.

The techniques utilised in eddy current testing depends on the sample being tested, i.e. whether it is a surface, tube, bar or other more complex shapes since it dictates the type of probe to be used. Furthermore, the number of frequencies and the inspection mode(s) such as absolute or differential determines the multi- frequency and / or mode technique description.

MAGNETIC PARTICLE TESTING COURSE INFORMATIONMagnetic Testing (MT) refers to a surface and very limited subsurface Non-Destructive Testing method that relies on the magnetic nature of the relevant material being tested, to reveal any discontinuities on the surface or major longitudinal indications just below the surface. The material should therefore allow for magnetic fields to be generated inside or pass through the material, hence the requirement for material is that it should be ferromagnetic which means that the material should have a magnetic permeability much greater than 1.

PENETRANT TESTING COURSE INFORMATION

Penetrant or liquid penetrant testing (PT) refers to a surface type non-destructive testing method that allows a liquid (containing dye to increase visibility) to fill an empty void, which is open to the surface, due to the capillary action of the liquid. Once the excess penetrant is removed from the surface a developer is applied to the surface which allows the penetrant to be absorbed into a contrasting medium (normally white powder) revealing the presence of a discontinuity. Penetrant testing can effectively be applied to any type of material, as long as the discontinuity sought, is open to the surface.

VISUAL TESTING COURSE INFORMATION

Visual testing is the most simple and commonly used NDT methods utilised today. Visual testing is very often the first inspection that is performed on any component or in any environment since you have to observe what you need to inspect and the inspection area. Visual testing is very much a surface inspection method. Visible light (within the 390 – 700nm range of the electromagnetic spectrum) and the interaction of it with a solid surface are used to detect indications that are open to the surface and that is not masked by any foreign material or debris. So effectively, what you can see is what you can detect.

RADIOGRAPHIC TESTING COURSE INFORMATIONRadiographic testing (RT) makes use of electromagnetic waves within the 0.01 to 10 nanometre (X-rays) or the < 0.01 nanometre (Gamma-rays) spectrum. At these ranges, the electromagnetic wave can effectively pass through a solid material, and an image can be created, either on film or electronic detection sensors, of what the internal structure of the material might be.

character, then this is the right NDT method for you. However, please keep in mind you must have a sound knowledge exponents and logarithms. Radiographic techniques depend on the type of wave used, the exposure configuration and the image formation.

The training course is based on general theory as well as sector specific applications relating, but not limited to, the following standards and specifications:

• ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code - Section V - Subsection A - Article 1 & 2• ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code - Section V - Subsection B - Article 22• ISO 10675 Part 1 & 2 RT - Acceptance levels• ISO 17636-1 RT - X and gamma ray techniques• ISO 19232 Parts 1 to 5 RT – Image quality of radiographs• ISO 11699 Parts 1 & 2 RT – Industrial radiographic films• ISO 5580 RT – Metallic materials using X- or gamma rays

– Basic rules• ISO 5576 RT – Vocabulary

Details of specific codes utilised in the limited (RT 2.Int) as well as derived or advanced techniques courses (RT 2.9) can be found in the relevant training documents.

Therefor radiographic testing is a volumetric testing method effective for finding any discontinuities that exceeds a 2% cross-sectional void or material change in relation to the actual beam orientation.

The energy levels of these very short waves exceed 100eV and put the operator at risk of harmful ionisation radiation which cannot be seen, heard, felt, tasted or smelled. Radiation safety training is there for essential in order to achieve and maintain an ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) exposure rating.

ULTRASONIC TESTING COURSE INFORMATIONUltrasonic testing (UT) method utilise mechanical vibration within the ultrasonic range (> 20kHz) to detect volumetric discontinuities within solid materials.

Also the send-or-receive / send-and-receive capabilities of the sensors are some of the technique parameters together with the scanning methodology used for example the tandem technique.

The training course is based on general theory as well as sector specific applications relating, but not limited to, the following standards and specifications:

• ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code - Section V - Subsection A - Article 1, 4 & 5• ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code - Section V - Subsection B - Article 23• ISO 16810 UT – General Principles• ISO 11666 UT – Acceptance Levels• ISO 17640 UT – Techniques, Testing levels and assessment• ISO 23279 UT – Characterisation of discontinuities in welds• ISO 5577 UT – Vocabulary• ISO 18175 UT – Performance characteristics (no electronic

instruments)• ISO 16827 UT – Characterisation and sizing of discontinuities• ISO 16826 UT – Discontinuities perpendicular to the surface• ISO 16811 UT – Sensitivity and range• ISO 12710 UT – Evaluating electronic characteristics of UT

instruments• ISO 10375 UT – Characterisation of search unit and sound field• ISO 7963 UT – Calibration block No 2• ISO 4992 Parts 1 & 2 UT – Steel castings• ISO 2400 UT – Calibration block No 1

Details of specific codes utilised in the limited (UT 1.WT) as well as derived or advanced techniques courses (UT 2.7; 2.8; 2.9; 2.10 and 2.11) can be found in the relevant training documents.

Both compression and shear waves are used to investigate the internal nature of components while the interaction of waves with linear, planar or volumetric ‘vacancies’ are used to characterise any discontinuities detected.

The sound beam is the primary inspection medium and both the qualification (properties) and quantification (calibration) thereof is essential for the interpretation of signal response. If you enjoy playing pool and have a knack for geometry and trigonometry, then we invite you to attend an ultrasonic testing course. It will change the way that you look at any engineering material or weldment.

Compression and shear wave applications having various angles and frequencies are building blocks for determining the techniques used.

PORTABLE HARDNESS TESTING COURSE INFORMATION

Conventional hardness testers, like Rockwell, Brinell or Vickers machines, require the test piece be brought to the testing device, but this is not always possible.

Portable hardness testing devices have been developed that permit in-situ

hardness measurements thus offering quick and economical supplements to conventional, stationary testing machines.

This three day course will define hardness, conventional methods of hardness testing and various methods of portable hardness testing. Practical

session during the course will give hands on experience on the portable hardness testing machines with various samples ranging from steel, stainless steel, aluminium and plastics.

After the course, the person will be competent to undertake in-situ hardness testing.

The main purpose of hardness testing is to determine the suitability of a material for a given application.

REPLICA METALLOGRAPHY COURSE INFORMATION

In those instances, destructive metallographic tests are unsuitable as further usability of the component is required. Replica metallographic technique is an in-situ, non-destructive technique to reveal the microstructure of components.

The usual method of metallographic investigation involves cutting pieces from the component so that laboratory preparation and examination can be performed. However, in replica metallography, after proper surface preparation through the use of cellulose acetate sheets, the technician makes a copy (for this reason it is called “replica”) of the microstructure of the metal surface, which will be examined

using an optical microscope. The four day course on replica metallography will give an insight into the different types of materials, importance of metallography, and how to do lab metallography and replica metallography. On successful completion of the course, the candidate will be a competent replica technician. Evaluation of the metallographs is undertaken by a qualified metallurgist.

Metallographic inspections play a key role in determining the remaining life assessment, creep life of pressure vessels, pipelines, power plants and in verifying the material and heat treatment of fabricated equipment.
