What follows is a very full newsletter reporting on all the main events which have recently taken place. If you are a ‘selective reader’ please may I urge you to prioritise the TB issue. At last you have a chance to influence the decision-making process by supporting (or not) the Government’s policy towards control & eradication. The Consultation is open for about another two months and I have taken the liberty of drafting a letter which may be edited by you and sent to DEFRA. Please do take the time to respond personally – it is crucial that there is enough support from the farming community, and that the Consultation is not overwhelmed by people with extreme views! Thank you. On to South Devon matters – reports are included from the four recent sales – two reductions, one dispersal, and the Society’s Autumn Show & Sale.

Membership continues to grow, and it has been a very busy year in the movement of pedigree cattle to newly establishing herds. There have also been some excellent opportunities for breeders to ‘cherry-pick’ the top quality – and pay the top prices. To crown the year’s trading, the breed achieved two new records at the Autumn Sale – 8400 gns for a bull, and 5000 gns for a heifer! If anyone mislaid a crafted ‘V’ thumb top walking stick at the Bristol Sales Centre, please let Clare Smith know, Messrs Kivells, Hallworthy, 01840 261261. Results from the National and the Wessex Herd Competitions are inside. Results from other Competitions will be made known in the next few weeks and will be reported in a future newsletter. Other reports include promotional events – the National Ploughing Championships in Ireland, the Dairy Event at the NEC, and Beef Southwest. Judges met recently at a Seminar in Leicestershire, and issues discussed included how to treat white on the underside of animals in the show-ring – more inside. Statements are enclosed as appropriate, and a list of merchandise as Christmas is not that far away (sorry to remind you). I plan to put together a World Association calendar for 2011 and am in the process of collecting photographs from our fellow associations around the globe. If you have any that you’d like to be considered for inclusion please send electronically or on a CD. On a final note, may we extend our congratulations to South Devon breeder John Hoskin of Maiden Castle Farm, Dorchester, Dorset on being awarded Farmers Weekly Farmer of the Year – a highly prestigious title, and certainly well deserved! My best wishes to you all, Caroline

CONDOLENCES

We are sorry to inform you of the death of Mr John Smith, Scalands Farm, Robertsbridge, East Sussex. John had farmed South Devons since 1974. His son Jeremy writes, he “spent a great deal of his time promoting the breed to a usually cynical listener. He loved my mother and took care of us kids, however we always knew he had another love ... his pedigree herd!”

BREED DESCRIPTION

I have been asked to give a reminder that the South Devon breed description is published in the Journal (p.7 of the current issue), particularly with regard to undesirable characteristics, such as white under-body. Society sales require white to be declared prior to sale and our Veterinary Inspector looks for the presence of white as part of the bull inspection. It has also been a point of issue at some shows, and was discussed at the recent Judges Seminar. Resulting from that Seminar breed judges are advised to use their discretion ‘on the day’ depending on the line-up of cattle they are asked to judge: other features such as conformation and structure are of far greater importance, but the presence of white should be used as a ‘fine-tuning’ tool for placings.

CLUB DRAW

The first Draw of the new Club year was made at the pre-Sale supper at Bristol by Wessex Region Chairman, Charles Phillips.

The winner, who receives a cheque for £186.75, is Mr Bill Kayley

from Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire.

PRIVATE SELLING OF BULLS

It is, unfortunately, a hole in our organisation that we very often lose track of good bulls which are sold to the commercial beef producer and, because the pedigree side is of little interest to the buyer, we do not know where the bulls are working. It would be another arrow to our Breed Promotion bow to follow up these bulls and to see how they and their progeny perform. If you are selling a bull to a non-pedigree buyer please would you take a moment to let us know so that we might follow it up at a later date. Thank you.

SOCIETY INCENTIVE SCHEMES Of particular importance to our growing number of new members, we currently run a number of financial incentives to help you (and us). These are: CREDITS AGAINST REGISTRATION FEE FOR CASUALTIES/NON-BREEDING ANIMALS If you pay the base fee (£30) to register an animal and then find it does not prove its potential as a breeder and goes for slaughter before it reaches 30

months of age, or if it falls as a casualty before that age, you can claim a credit of £30 to your account against that registration fee if you let us know within 4 months of the date of slaughter/casualty by providing written evidence (such as a kill sheet). DISCOUNTS AGAINST REGISTRATIONS FOR HERD HEALTH SCHEMES If you are a member of a CHeCS health scheme (most probably Biobest Herdcare or SAC Premium Cattle Health Scheme) and are taking steps towards screening/eradication for at least Johnes, you can claim a £5 discount against each pedigree registration for a period of two years. DISCOUNT SCHEME FOR TESTING MYOSTATIN STATUS IN FEMALES The cost of testing the first 20 females in your herd is currently half-price - £10 per animal. This is for a limited total number so it’s in your interests to apply as soon as possible. PERFORMANCE RECORDING FINANCIAL INCENTIVE Herds which are new to Breedplan performance recording are not charged a herd fee (currently £120 per year) for the first year, or part year. Charges are restricted to a per cow fee of £3 over and above the first 5 cows in a herd, each year.

NATIONAL SHOW

Richard & Diana Wright have very kindly put together a DVD of the photos they took during this year’s National Show at the Royal Cornwall – different to the one we put together from our official photographer. If you would like a copy please let us know. In 2011 the National Show moves to the Royal Norfolk (29th & 30th June), and we look forward to another celebration of all that’s good about South Devons! South Devon classes will be extended to put on a bigger show, and the Society’s annual Young Handler Competition will be held there. Please mark your calendars and add the Show to your list! Likewise if you have youngsters who will be aged between 16 and 25 please encourage them to enter the Young Handler Competition. We shall be looking for sponsorship to help with the additional costs, and would appreciate any ideas you might have for local or national help.

WINNER’S OPEN DAY Mr & Mrs T J Warhurst, The Ewefields Herd, Green Farm, Sutton under Brailes, Banbury, Oxfordshire

Anyone wishing to spend a very pleasant afternoon in the early Autumn warm sunshine looking at strong, well-fleshed, well-coated South Devons against a backdrop of beautifully unspoilt countryside would not have been disappointed by Jeffrey Warhurst’s Open Day. Some 70 members and guests were treated to a well-organised visit. The farm comprises about 1000 acres of mostly arable land, with 150 acres of pasture. The Ewefields herd currently stands at 43 cows, with some very promising looking in-calf 2 year old heifers which will increase the herd to 60 when they calve down in the Spring. A group of younger heifers run with an Aberdeen Angus bull, to calve at 2 years. The current breeding is heavily influenced by two bulls – Welland Valley Hanbury 4 and Highgate Hayden 7, both of whom have left some lovely youngstock including some Hanbury bulls. Bloodlines on the female side include a variety of well-established names such as Sexton, Edmeston, Wishworthy, Highgate and Waddeton. Bulls are kept entire and finished at about 16 months, and heifers are retained for breeding. The afternoon ended with a sumptuous tea, and words of thanks and congratulations conveyed by Society President, Mike Kettlewell to Jeffrey and Sarah Warhurst, and to their staff and helpers.

EVENT REPORTS

THE DAIRY & LIVESTOCK EVENT NEC, Birmingham The new venue for the RABDF’s Dairy & Livestock event at the NEC offers a great deal of scope for expansion and, judging by the variety of interest from visitors, it will be a good opportunity for us to demonstrate the breed. A big thank-you is extended to Tom Elliott and family for the loan of Z Knightcote Demetrius 4 who behaved impeccably and did a great job of showing off the breed’s temperament, growth and conformation. Another

Page 19: South Devons Newsletter October 2010

demonstration bull (a different breed, of course) quickly learned that his pen was not attached to anything and he was sent home in disgrace after taking one walk too many! We were kept busy during the two days dealing with enquiries from beef producers, dairy farmers looking to change direction, export markets, and others. NBA’S BEEF SOUTHWEST The bi-annual Beef Southwest moved to Exeter Livestock Centre this time, and the Society accepted the invitation to sponsor the event by supplying South Devon beef for the pre-event Supper. Thanks to Mark Thomas for producing the beef, to Phillip Warren for preparing it, and to the catering team in the Stockman’s Restaurant for presenting it – an all-round promotional success! In the Native Yearling Bull competition Richard Harvey took first place with Z Sexton General 23, a very well-grown bull who showed himself very well in the ring, and went on to take overall Reserve Champion. In third place in the Native section was the Harpers’ Bedford Jackpot. Thanks go to Richard Harvey and to Gordon Tully for loaning demonstration cattle for the Society’s promotional stand. There were a number of interesting enquiries during the day which will be followed up. PROMOTIONAL STAND AT THE IRISH PLOUGHING CHAMPIONSHIPS Co. Kildare For the last few years the Society has had a stand at the biggest agricultural event on the Irish calendar. The event has grown enormously, and now accommodates a wide variety of breed and trade stands, as well as being the host for anyone who has an interest in ploughing! This year’s British Pavilion was flooded during the second night when the field could not cope with the volume of rain, and demonstration cattle (no South Devons unfortunately) had to be evacuated. The next day the Showground was little better than a swamp, but the Irish visitors took it all in their stride and came prepared.

Page 20: South Devons Newsletter October 2010

20

The Society’s stand was busy, and although slow, progress can be seen to be made in our strive to establish the breed in Ireland. With semen available at Progressive Genetics (Trewint Henry 1 and Grove Germanicus 13) it has been possible for several beef producers to try the breed, and reports on the first progeny are good. There were also a few enquiries for live animals and we shall endeavour to bring these to fruition.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

SMITHFIELD SHOW It was hugely disappointing to hear of the cancellation of this year’s AgriLIVE Smithfield at Stoneleigh. Another agricultural event loss by the RASE can only lead to further loss of confidence in the future of the Stoneleigh site. However, the announcement just a few days afterwards – that the East of England Winter Stock Festival had invited the Smithfield Club to hold its classes at their show on 12th & 13th November – was a welcome relief for this year. As I write, a consignment of South Devon primestock animals from the South-West is being coordinated to attend the show – fingers crossed that the detail can be arranged. BORDERWAY AGRI-EXPO CARLISLE

A new event for the breed in 2010 is Harrison & Hetherington’s very successful Autumn show, Agri-Expo, on Friday 29th October at Borderway Mart, Carlisle. The Society will have a stand with demonstration cattle. WELSH WINTER FAIR Held at Builth Wells on 29th & 30th November, the Welsh Winter Fair is the main primestock focus for the region. The Society will have a presence, taking a share of the NBA stand alongside other pedigree breed societies.

LOCAL PRIMESTOCK SHOWS Other primestock shows will begin soon, a number of which are being sponsored by the Society. Please support where you can; the primestock sector is the terminal market, after all.

BREEDPLAN SUCKLER REPLACEMENT INDEX The most recent BLUP evaluation (which number-crunches all the performance data submitted in the previous 6 months to make cross-herd and in-herd comparisons) included for the first time a Suckler Replacement Index. This Index is in its South Devon infancy, and will become more of a useful breeding tool as time goes on, and as more directly relevant maternal data is added to the melting pot. It compares with the existing Quality Beef Index by looking more at how the dam performs in producing female replacements as well as beef progeny. Differences between sire rankings in the two Indexes will widen as time goes on and as data increases, giving more indication as to which sires have better potential to produce suckler replacements and which are more suited as terminal sires. As a general guide:

The South Devon Quality Beef Index - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow mated for an example commercial herd targeting the EU market with no marbling requirement. All progeny are assumed to be marketed at around 650-720 kg live weight (360-400 kg carcase weight) at approximately 22 months of age.

Bulls are ranked by their genetic potential for the production of prime steers and heifers for beef production. While growth and carcase EBVs are the main drivers used in compiling this Index, some emphasis is also placed on calving ease direct (CED), which is an estimate of genetic difference between animals’ ability to calve without assistance.

Bulls with a higher South Devon Quality Beef Index will have a greater genetic potential to sire heavier progeny at slaughter age. As there are no maternal traits included in the calculation of the South Devon Quality Beef Index, bulls with a high Index will not necessarily be suitable for breeding heifer replacements.

Page 22: South Devons Newsletter October 2010

22

The South Devon Suckler Replacement Index - Ranks bulls by their genetic potential for the production of female replacements while producing prime steers and excess heifers for beef production. It has emphasis on calving ease and maternal traits while also looking to finish steers for slaughter using a pasture based production system supplemented with extra rations during the finishing phase.

This index is also suitable for using South Devon sires over mixed breed cows where replacement females are sourced from within the herd. There may be some hybrid vigour expressed in the progeny depending on the breed type of the cows used. Therefore you should consider placing extra emphasis on the Calving Ease EBVs (more positive) of the sire to allow for possible heavier birth weights of his calves due to hybrid vigour.

Typical production parameters, prices and costs underlie these selection Indexes. Benefits and costs evaluated include both those for the sale animal from birth to slaughter and average running costs for a typical cow herd. Feed is assumed a limited resource for a large part of the year and any increase in feed requirement is a cost.

SCANNING FOR CARCASE EBVs With the refinement of the Quality Beef Index to evaluate beef production potential it becomes more important to consider extending your data input to include scan measurements for fat, and eye muscle area. These heavily influence the index, and enable more accurate assessments of breeding potential. Scanners must be trained and accredited to Breedplan standards, and the list is regularly updated: England/Wales Jim Barber 01260 273421 or 07973 307687 Adrian Johnson 01347 888665 or 07702 000760 Scotland Gordon Clark 01337 828632 or 07850 885468 Linda McKendrick 01334 840489 or 07803 064452 William Wilson 01292 570629 or 07740 611545

BOVINE TB

The Government has released a consultation document outlining their plans for controlling bovine TB which is summarised as follows: “The Coalition Government has committed, as part of a package of measures, to develop affordable options for a carefully-managed and science-led policy of badger control in areas with high and persistent levels of bovine TB in cattle. Defra is inviting your views on the Government’s planned approach to tackling bovine TB in badgers through this consultation. The incidence rate of bovine TB in cattle has been rising for 25 years with the cost to Government of controlling bovine TB in England at over £63 million in 2009/10 (excludes research and development). These costs are rising year by year so there is a strong case for early effective action to turn this around. Eradicating bovine TB is our long term goal, but additional measures are needed urgently to stop the disease spreading and to start to reverse the rising trend. The farming industry and Government need to work in partnership to achieve this. There is no single solution to tackling bovine TB – we need to use every tool in the toolbox. Scientific evidence indicates that in areas with high incidence of bovine TB in cattle, it will not be possible to eliminate the disease in cattle without addressing the disease in badgers. No other country in the world has successfully tackled bovine TB in cattle without addressing the wildlife reservoir. The overall aim is to put measures in place to control the disease in badgers for areas with a high incidence of bovine TB in cattle. This consultation will be of interest to a wide range of stakeholders: farmers and farming industry, landowners, veterinary industry, wildlife groups, members of the public; non-Government organisations and rural groups.” The full document together with some very useful annexed information can be found at http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/tb-control-measures/index.htm. It includes a list of questions to which your answers and comments are invited – and it is important that as many farmers as possible

respond. Your response can be sent electronically, to [email protected], or by post, to TBBC, Nobel House, 17 Smith Square, London, SW1P 3JR. A list of the questions is enclosed with this newsletter, together with a suggested draft letter for you to amend with your own comments.
