WELCOME to White Bear Lake Area High School South Campus. We look forward to a challenging, safe, and
rewarding school year. We are excited this year to bring forward a new building initiative; all 11th & 12th grade students will be receiving a Chromebook laptop this fall as part of our continued technology rollout. While this program is not new to our incoming 11th graders from North, it will be a new experience for our 12th graders and teaching staff.
I hope the rest of your summer is enjoyable and relaxing. While there is no need for any of us to feel a rush to the new school year, I look forward to the start of a rewarding year for our students and their families.

Student Schedule Release Information On August 22, 2016 parents will be able to update their Family Access account and view/print student schedules.
Components parents/students will complete include: ➢ Student/Family and Emergency Information ➢ Health/Immunization Information ➢ Technology and Chromebook Acceptable Use Agreements ➢ Media Release ➢ Ramsey County Library Agreement.
Upon completing the account updates, you will be able to view your student's schedule. This process will only be available in Family Access (parent login), not Student Access (student login). Click here to access the link for the Skyward Family Annual Update & Schedule Release.

Counselors will be available for necessary schedule changes on a first come, first served basis on Wednesday, August 24th from 7:00 11:00 am and in the afternoon from 2:00 6:00 pm (see Schedule Changes below). If you have any questions, please call 6517736222.
Schedule Changes Classes were formed, schedules created, and staff hired and assigned on the basis of last winter’s student course selection. Now that this process is complete, schedule changes are discouraged, and in many cases, not possible. Changes can only be honored if it is educationally best for the student and there is room in the desired course.
Examples of “acceptable” schedule changes include:
➢ Inappropriate course placement ➢ Course prerequisites have not been met ➢ Course has been taken and cannot be repeated for credit ➢ Acceptance to a special program, medical, or administrative action.
Students whose requests fall within these guidelines have the first three days of the semester to request a schedule change. Please be aware that changing your schedule may have an unwanted impact on your transcript. If a course is dropped by the third class day, it is dropped with no record. Courses dropped between the third day and the end of the second week are dropped with a “W” (Withdrawn) and will not impact the GPA. If a course is dropped after the second week of that course, an “NC” (No Credit) will be recorded on the report card for that semester or year, which will reduce the GPA.

Online Parent/Student Communication Resources White Bear Lake Area Schools uses several digital tools for parents to track their child’s course information, attendance, grades, health, emergency contact information, attendance, etc. Schoology is used by teachers to post assignments, class documents and calendar events. Plan on Riding the Bus? Read this! White Bear Lake Area High School South Campus students entering grades 1112 in September, who are eligible for transportation(students who live more than one mile from South Campus), MUST REGISTER for bus service. Students in grades 1112 will NOT be listed for service unless Transportation receives a registration form. To access the form click here.

Parking Information for Students WBLAHS—South Campus students have a variety of parking options. Contract parking is offered each semester in the Main and Gall Lots. Daily parking is available in the Tennis and Gall Lots.
Application Process To apply online for a permit please go to whitebear.feepay.com and select Field Trips, General Fees and More. Payment must be made online when the application is submitted.
Permits will be distributed the first day of school during lunches. All students can drive the first day of school, but parking spots are limited.
Main Lot The Main Lot is located on the south side of the school. Permits cost $100 per semester. Online applications and payments for Semester 1 Main Lot permits will open at 6:00 am on August 8, 2016 and will close on August 19, 2016 at midnight or until sold out. Carpools who apply before the August 19 deadline will be given priority. Carpools who apply after the deadline and all single applications will be addressed in order of submission, subject to availability.
Gall Lot The Gall Lot is located at the west end of the WBLAHS behind McDonalds. A walking path to the school is maintained throughout the year. Permits cost $50 per semester. Online applications and payments for Semester 1 Gall Lot permits will open at 6:00 am on August 8, 2016 and will remain open until sold out.
Daily Parking Daily parking is available for $2/day in the Tennis Lot and $1/day in the Gall Lot. Cash payment is made to the parking attendant each day. The Tennis Lot is located on the west side of the school, adjacent to the tennis courts.
Semester 1 permits and Gall Lot permits will be distributed on the first day of the semester during lunches in the cafeteria. A picture ID (Driver’s License) will be required to pick up your permit.
Receipt of a Semester 1 permit does not guarantee a student will receive a Semester 2 permit. Applications and payments for Semester 2 permits will be accepted January 9 20, 2017. Lifetouch Picture Day Lifetouch will be at the South Campus for Picture Day on Friday, September 9, 2016. Families can purchase photo packages by sending the completed order form and payment with the student on Friday, September 9th. Order forms will be available on the North/South Website under Parent Resources or in the Main Office. Picture Retake Day will be October 14, 2016 at South Campus.

Open House September 15, 2016 7:008:30 pm The South Campus Open House is an opportunity for parents to meet teachers and learn about their child’s education. Parents follow their child’s schedule by attending classes during the evening. Teachers will explain course requirements, objectives, content, materials and answer questions.
Open House will begin in your child’s first hour classroom at 7:00 pm Open House Schedule Here you will receive a copy of your student’s schedule as well as a brief Period 1 7:007:15 presentation by your student’s first hour teacher. The evening continues Period 2 7:207:30 with parents attending their student’s classes for 10 minute “mini” class Period 3 7:357:45 periods. The evening will end at approximately 8:30 pm. Student Locks and Lockers Each student will be issued a hall locker which will be printed on their schedule and must secure it with a school issued Master Lock. Students transferring from North Campus will be able to use locks purchased through the school. You may purchase a lock for a $5.00 security deposit by going to our website and selecting online payments, or in the main office anytime during the school year. Students can keep the lock at the end of the school year or return it to the main office for a refund of the $5.00 security deposit. Locks should remain on the lockers at all times during the school year. To support school security, students are reminded to only use the hall locker that is assigned to them. Failure to do so can result in theft of items, or removal of items by school personnel. Students who are unable to access their assigned lockers should report concerns immediately to the main office.

Smartphones in the Classroom Phones in the classroom can be both a benefit and a distraction. Students are expected to “PowerDown” their cell phones during learning hours unless the classroom teacher allows such use. Students can turn their cell phones on during passing time if need be. Electronic devices are vulnerable to theft or damage forwhich the schoolwill not be responsible.

Medications During School Hours Medications should be given at home before or after school if possible. If a student’s health requires medication during school hours, the school will need to have the following:
1. A written statement from the physician stating the name of the child, name of the medication, dosage, the time(s) to be taken, reason, any possible side effects, and the date the medication is to be stopped.
2. A written authorization from a parent/guardian stating permission for your child to receive the medication in school as prescribed by your child’s physician.
3. The medication supplied in a prescription bottle or container properly labeled by a pharmacy or physician. Please ask your pharmacy to provide two prescription bottles or containers at the time you obtain the medication. This will allow you to have a prescription container at home and at school.
School Clothes Shopping? We encourage students to dress modestly for school. Please consider the following text from our student handbook when purchasing clothes to be worn at school: “Low necklines, spaghetti straps, backless tops or halter tops are not allowed. All tops must cover both shoulders and midriffs. Bottoms that are too short, suggestive, reveal underclothes or the lower back area are also inappropriate. Stretch pants/tights may only be worn if a sweatshirt or skirt covers the student’s bottom. If a student does not have appropriate clothing with them, they may be asked to go home or have their parents deliver clothing to them at school.”

Peanut Sensitivity and Safety Several students at South Campus have severe, life threatening peanut and/or tree nut allergies. Contact with these allergens can result in an anaphylactic reaction (anaphylactic shock). Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that is rapid in onset and may cause death. For the safety of our students we respectfully request the following: Please avoid sending peanuts/tree nuts, peanut/tree butter, foods containing peanut/tree nut or that may contain traces of peanuts/tree nuts to school. When peanuts/tree nuts are consumed by students or adults, their hands, mouth, and other areas of their bodies become contaminated with peanuts/tree nuts oil and residue is easily spread by students and staff as they move about the school (drinking fountains, bus seats, keyboards, school papers, etc). Peanut oil does not come off with hand sanitizer or hand wipes, only soap and water. With student safety in mind, the school district follows procedures that affect all grade levels. Currently, we do not serve peanut products in all grade levels K12. No peanuts, soy butter, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, are available to students of all grade levels and staff in the kitchen, cafeteria serving lines, a la carte lines, and cafeteria areas. We ask students and families to refrain from bringing to school any peanuts or peanut products because of the health risk they pose to students diagnosed with nut allergies. Prepare for Homecoming! Homecoming week is a great American tradition in our schools where belonging and school pride are highlighted. Our Homecoming Committee is planning coronation, themes for each day, and will be selling “Bear Wear.” Our athletic teams will be competing throughout the week, culminating with the varsity football game versus the Woodbury Royals. Come and support our Bears as they “Wipe Out Woodbury” on Friday, October 7, at 7:00 p.m. Other Homecoming activities for the week include:
Monday October 3 Coronation at the South Campus Auditorium @ 7:00 pm Friday October 7 School Spirit Day and Parade in downtown White Bear at 3:30. The Football Game vs. Woodbury Royals is at 7 p.m. and includes a halftime show. Saturday October 8 SemiFormal dance from 8 to 11 pm.
Attendance Procedures Parents/guardians should call the attendance line (6517736211 or 6517736210) before 9:30 am each day a student is absent, unless alternative arrangements have been made. The school’s automated calling system will contact parents of students who have unverified absences at approximately 10:00 am each day. Students who leave the building during the school day must be dismissed through either the Health Office or Attendance Office. Parents/guardians may call the attendance line (6517736210) or send a note to excuse students for appointments during the school day. Notes should be brought to the attendance office when the student arrives at school.
When calling the attendance line, please speak clearly and provide the following information:
➢ Student’s full name and grade (please spell the last name) ➢ Your name and relationship to the student ➢ Phone number where you can be reached during the day ➢ Date of absence and/or time for dismissal and approximate return time for appointments
➢ Reason for absence/dismissal. If the student has flulike symptoms, please include this in your message.

Activities and Absences When students participate in any cocurricular and/or sports activity, they are required to be in attendance at school the entire day of the event, unless it is an excused absence. Students must not incur any unexcused absence (as outlined in the student attendance policy 503) the day after an event if the day is the next consecutive school day of the same week. If an unexcused absence is incurred for the next consecutive school day of the same week, the student will not participate in the next scheduled cocurricular and/or sports event (Board Policy 503).
Tardiness and Consequences Tardiness to class causes a disruption to the educational process and can limit student success. The first five tardies are handled by the teacher, who will give warnings and/or detention; subsequent tardies are referred to administration. Repeated tardies to school may result in loss or suspension of parking privileges.
Requesting Homework When parents are reasonably sure that a student will be absent for three or more consecutive days, they may want to request homework by calling the Attendance Office at 6517736210. It should be ready for pickup after 2:30 p.m. on the next day. If requesting homework on a Friday, the request will not be ready until Monday afternoon. Another option is for a friend or sibling to request assignments directly from teachers.
Discipline Procedures The staff and administration at White Bear Lake Area High School are committed to providing an effective learning environment for all students. Discipline at White Bear High School, in cooperation with the home, is designed to encourage students to develop the selfdiscipline that is necessary to function successfully in school. Our goal is to teach students to have respect for the rights and safety of all individuals within the school and community, as well as respect for public and private property. Student behavior that disrupts class work or invades the rights of others will not be tolerated. A summary of the discipline code appears in the student handbook, which will be distributed to all students during the first week of school. School Board Student Discipline Policy 506
Aware Program AWARE (Academics with Accountability and Restorative Education) provides an alternative educational setting for students who require short or longterm placements for safety, disciplinary or other reasons. AWARE is located adjacent to WBL Transition Plus in Hugo. Transportation to AWARE is provided from all secondary buildings. While attending AWARE, students complete assignments from their current courses and participate in restorative activities. Staff members at AWARE work with students, parents and teachers to ensure a successful transition back to school.
Bullying Bullying includes, but is not limited to, conduct by a student against another student or a group of students that has the effect of harming students, damaging student property, placing a student in reasonable fear of harm to person or property, or creating a hostile or intimidating environment. The school district will act to investigate all complaints of bullying. A student who engages in an act of bullying, reprisal, or false reporting of bullying or permits, condones, or tolerates bullying shall be subject to discipline for that act in accordance with school district policies and procedures.
Detention Students who are assigned detention are encouraged to serve the time with a teacher whenever possible. This allows students to make up assignments, receive individual assistance, and develop positive relationships with staff. Detention assigned by an administrator may also be served in the Main Office, Monday Friday, 7:15 7:45 am or 2:45 3:30 pm

ISD 624 Sexual Harassment Policy (413) Violence and Harassment Policy 413 speaks to the issue of sexual harassment in the schools. The district strongly disapproves of any form of sexual harassment and will deal swiftly and severely with employees or students found guilty of sexually harassing other employees or students. Sexual harassment can be defined as unwelcome sexual advances, request for sexual favors, sexuallymotivated physical contact or other verbal or physical contact or communication of a sexual nature.
Tobacco Policy All White Bear Lake Area Schools and district property are tobacco free and vapor (ecig) free (policy 419). This includes staff, students and visitors who attend school functions. We need everyone’s cooperation to enforce this policy, especially at our evening events. We appreciate your help.

Internet Use The Media Specialist and teachers provide instruction and guidance on acceptable use of the Internet. All students and their parents are required to sign the Acceptable Use Agreement to be permitted to use district technology. A copy of the Internet Acceptable Use Policy is available in the office and is posted on the district web site. The Internet is a teaching tool and students will be using it to access online reference materials such as encyclopedias, atlases, magazines, and educational sites to complete assignments. The school has WiFi and students are permitted to sign on using their school email addresses. Inappropriate use of the Internet may result in suspension of computer privileges and/or other disciplinary action. Parents may request that their child not use the Internet by notifying the school.
Video Surveillance The staff of White Bear Lake High School’s South Campus makes every effort to maintain a safe learning environment for our students. Please be aware that the South Campus makes use of video monitoring devices throughout the building to aid us in this mission.
Dog Searches To support our efforts to keep our schools safe and drug free, school administrators may use dogs trained to detect contraband, including drugs or weapons, to conduct random searches in student lockers, or common areas of the school buildings and vehicles parked on school grounds. A qualified and authorized trainer and a school administrator shall accompany the dogs. If a dog indicates that contraband, including drugs or weapons, is present on school property, school administrators may conduct a further search.

ACT All juniors in Minnesota public high schools are required to complete a college entrance exam as a requirement for graduation. White Bear Lake Area High School will offer three exams in school on February 28, 2017, the ACT, the Accuplacer, and the ASVAB. All students will take the ACT unless a family requests to take the Accuplacer (required by community colleges including Century College). On February 28, 2017 all juniors will take the ACT exam during the school day. Juniors will follow an adjusted schedule, testing from 7:55 am until approximately 1:00 pm. Students will be released when testing is done. Students who choose to stay at school after testing may work in the cafeteria or media center. Bag lunches will be available in the cafeteria after testing. Buses will follow the regular schedule.
Because the significant security and supervisory responsibilities, all of our staff will be required to be engaged in the administration of the exam, there will be no school on February 28, 2017 for seniors. Seniors who have not taken a college entrance exam
College Entrance Exams All Juniors will take the ACT plus Writing During a previous legislative session the legislature required all Minnesota public schools to administer the ACT plus Writing to all 11th grade students during the school year. Reminder! All fouryear colleges require that students take a college entrance exam (ACT or SAT) and submit their scores to be considered for admission. Seniors who either want to retake a test or who have not yet taken one are encouraged to register for the October test. Juniors are encouraged to take the test in the spring of their
junior year. You can register for the exam online, or you can pick up a registration packet in the College and Career Center. Fee waivers are available to eligible students. To determine which test is needed, contact the college or university directly or ask your counselor for help.

National College Fairs The National College Fair will be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center located at 1301 Second Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon and from 5:00 to 8:00 pm and on Wednesday, October 5 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. This is a great opportunity for juniors and seniors to “get to know” schools. More than 350 colleges and universities from across the nation will be represented. The school will coordinate transportation for a limited number of students. Sign up in the Career Center. More information will be sent to seniors through their first hour class.
How to make the most of the College Fair:
➢ Review the list of fair participants before you go so you can research colleges that you really want to learn more about
➢ Compile a list of questions unique to your interests ➢ Map out a strategy—know what schools you want to visit with and where in the convention center they
are located ➢ Bring a notebook, pen, and backpack.
Post Secondary Process for Seniors 1. Take the ACT and/or SAT test if planning to apply to a fouryear school. Community and technical colleges do
not require the ACT or SAT.
2. Obtain the application from individual colleges by phone, mail, or internet.
3. Complete the application. Seniors will be meeting with Ms. Horowicki and Ms. Vavricka for detailed information about the application process. You will receive an email in September with more information. Don’t hesitate to apply online sometimes the application fee is waived! If you do apply online, make sure you either print the counselor page as directed or let your counselor know that you submitted an online application.
Family Access Parents/Guardians can track their students’ progress via Family Access. This outstanding program provides information regarding attendance, discipline, and student progress. Students can monitor identical information via Student Access, teachers update the program weekly. Parents can also update their email address via Family Access. Grade Point Values, GPA, Transcript and Class Rank White Bear Lake Area High School evaluates students on a 4.0 scale with each grade given point values as listed below.
Weighted grades are provided for all Advanced Placement, A = 4.000 points C+ = 2.333 points College in the Schools, and Project Lead the Way courses. A = 3.667 points C = 2.000 points Weighted grades are calculated by multiplying the above point B+ = 3.333 points C = 1.667 points values by 1.25. Student transcripts show both weighted and B = 3.000 points D+ = 1.333 points unweighted GPA and class rank. B = 2.667 points D = 1.000 points D = 0.667 points Our Academic Recognition Policy (599) can be read in its entirety on the district website. For this recognition only weighted grades will be used. Eligible students will work to compete against the criterion for academic honors, rather than each other. An eligible student’s final cumulative, weighted GPA at the end of the second semester of senior year will be used to determine the level of honor on a high school transcript, and for academic recognition at commencement. The three levels of honors to be awarded to eligible students who have acquired academic excellence are:

A current physical must be on file with the District and entered into the FeePay system before families will be able to register a student for any activity that requires this form. Physicals are considered current for 3 years and must not expire during the season for which the registration is being made. Families may check the status of their child’s physical date in Skyward Family Access under Health. Athletic Passes Save Some Money! Students, parents and community members can save by purchasing annual passes for athletic events. Annual passes will be available for purchase at the Student Services office, and at the ticket booths for all home games.

Participation Scholarship The Peter E. Palm Memorial and Honsa Student Activities Funds recognize that involvement in cocurricular activities provides opportunity for students to connect positively with each other and build a positive sense of selfworth. These funds are intended to provide full participation in cocurricular activities for students who may not otherwise have access due to financial need. Funding may include scholarships for student activity fees or for additional costs associated with participation in activities. Call our Athletic office at 6517736206 for more information. Families who wish to apply may request a scholarship application from the activities office at either campus 6517736206 at South Campus or 6516532933 at North Campus. Scholarships applications will be confidential and reviewed only by the Principal(s) and Athletic Director.
Fan Behavior A reminder to all fans of the Sportsmanship Initiative sponsored by the Suburban East Conference….please remember that our high school sporting events are school activities and that they are meant to cultivate an attitude of good sportsmanship among all participants and spectators….remember our goal is intensity and integrity in the stands, as well as on the field, the court, the mat, the gym, the ice, the course, & the pool.
