Dear Member,
Our condolences are extended to family and friends of Mr Graham Fry, who
many members would have met during his time as Farm Bailiff for Grove
Farms, Moreton-in-Marsh between 1997 and 2006. He is remembered for his
friendliness and popularity. Sadly, Graham died recently after a short illness
aged just 64.
Plenty of events have taken place since my last newsletter in May, including a
number of major shows as well as our National Show. Spirits have not been
dampened by the challenging weather conditions, and the standard of South
Devons in the show-rings has been generally very strong – well done to all who
show-case the breed for the benefit of all of us! A bit of sunshine is
definitely overdue for the remaining major and local shows – not to mention all
those jobs still to be done at home!
Another highly successful National Show saw almost 100 South Devons
competing, from Yorkshire to Cornwall, and from six of our seven regions.
2
Attendance was strong, and the Society Supper seated 106 South Devon
members and guests who enjoyed an excellent roast beef dinner. A week
previously, the Three Counties’ stewards supper served South Devon beef
supplied by R G Elliott & Son and sponsored by the Society and the Midland
Club. The comments we have received have come from several different
sources, and all said that the beef was excellent, even ‘the best ever tasted.’
Promotion well done!
The Towergate Farm Insurance Young Handler Competition saw seven highly
skilled entrants compete in what were dreadful conditions – pouring rain and
plenty of mud – and all should be congratulated on their fortitude! The overall
winner was Miss Rosalyn Pate from Hall Farm, Beachampton, Buckinghamshire;
and other results are inside.
We are all very grateful to all those members who have lent a hand in the
Society marquee at any of the shows; particularly this year whilst I am
‘physically challenged’.
On the back of shows and sales, membership continues to increase. If you
would like to directly influence the membership numbers by introducing a new
member to the Society for just £10, then all you need to do is to let us have
their contact details and we will do the rest!
A new Sale in the northern region is to be held on Wednesday 7th November
at Skipton. The Sale will be inspected by Duncan Findlay to the same
standard as at Exeter, Stratford and Bristol; and health requirements will
also be the same. It will be conducted by CCM Auctions after a pedigree sale
of Beef Shorthorns who are supported by Morrisons’ traditional beef scheme.
I hope this means an increased knock-on effect for South Devons! There will
be a minimum number of entries to reach in order for the Sale to go ahead;
and schedules will be sent out in good time.
An entry form for the National Herd Competition is included herein, and
there will be a reminder in the next newsletter. Time waits for no man or
beast, so please watch for deadlines!
With my best wishes
Caroline

THE NATIONAL SHOW
THREE COUNTIES SHOW
Judge: Mr W H D Scott, Moreton-in-Marsh, Glos
A tremendous display of South Devon cattle from all over the
country turned out to compete and to demonstrate the breed in the
3rd National Show which was held this year at the Three Counties
Show at Malvern. With just under 100 animals forward, South
Devon entries out-numbered any other breed at the show and made
for some very impressive classes, the largest being 24 two year old
heifers.
For the third year running, National Female Champion went to Mr
Roger Rundle from Newquay in Cornwall, with another smart two
year old heifer, Kestle Tulip 85 by Lumbylaw Leo 2 and out of Kestle
Tulip 47, who then went on to take Breed Champion. Roger also won
best group, best cow and calf on performance and inspection, and
was also awarded the Society’s Track Marshall Trophy for the
exhibitor gaining most points in all the classes.
Reserve Breed Champion and Male Champion was Royal Cornwall
Champion, Hopton Maximus 2, owned and shown by P R & T Eustice
from Newquay, Cornwall. The bull was bought by Phil Eustice at the
Society’s 2011 Spring Sale at Exeter, having been bred and
successfully shown by J G Williams & Son from Craven Arms in
Shropshire.
Best 2009 born calved heifer was A & C Farms’ Trevassack
Mayflower 259, bred by Mr Hugh Lello, Camborne, Cornwall. A & C
Farms from Langham in Rutland also had best intermediate bull with
AI X Mutterton Ashton Bitter, record price breaker at Exeter in
2011 bred by Mr & Mrs Alan Bartley, Cullompton, Devon.
4
Best yearling heifer was Brafferton Stella 38, from Mr Paul
Harrison, Yorkshire. In the older cow class, the award went to
Newquay again, with Mr Terry Warne’s Carzise Pauline 21, bred by
Mr Lionel Pascoe from Hayle, Cornwall. Mr Pascoe won best young
bull with Carzise Bentley 2. SHOW RESULTS

The Society’s marquee provided welcome cover from the rain during
the downpours, whilst giving a ringside view. Colour-coordinated,
and showing off new posters and other displays, it also received
recognition from the Three Counties Show judges who gave the
Society Silver Award for show tradestands. Thanks to all those
who entered the cake and photograph competitions for providing
welcome refreshment and a great display in the marquee!
Numerous other thanks are also due, too many to name all, but in
particular I should mention:
Diane Sugden and Keith Fisher for stewarding the South
Devon classes, and for judging the ‘Tidy Lines’ competition
Diane Sugden for providing the flower arrangements
Richard Hartshorn for stewarding the Young Handler
Competition
Stephanie Rowe for judging the cake competition
Eric Beard for judging the photograph competition
Richard Hartshorn and Diane Sugden for providing tea/coffee
in the cattle lines
The Working Group – namely Bob Bostelmann, Richard
Hartshorn, Mark Rushbrooke, Diane Sugden, and Sally
Smallcombe
7
And last, but by no means least:
All our sponsors, and exhibitors without whom there would
have been no show!
The Society Supper, hosted in the Three Counties Members’
Pavilion, was a convivial evening, and a time to relax in the dry after
the busy show ring. It was followed by the presentation of the
awards, including local wine for all the class winners donated by the
SAS Group.

TOWERGATE FARM INSURANCE YOUNG HANDLER
COMPETITION
Judge: Mr W H D Scott, Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire
We are most grateful for the continued support of our sponsors
Towergate Farm Insurance (formerly Lloyd & Whyte) who enable us
to hold this Annual Competition to find a young South Devon
ambassador to represent the breed in an overseas trip to see South
Devons in a very different breeding environment.
Now attached to the National Show, the venue this year was of
course the Three Counties Show at Malvern. The showing conditions
were not at all favourable, with a show ring already churned into mud
from the previous day’s judging, and pouring rain. However, the
8
entrants demonstrated their skills with confidence and
professionalism both in preparing their allotted animals, and in
placing them in judging order. A retreat was made to the marquee
where Mr Scott assessed the reasons given for the judging
decisions, before the result was given to a packed crowd of members
and relatives.

DAVID PHILLIPS MEMORIAL COMPETITION Just a reminder that if you wish to enter this Competition please request
cards from the SDHBS office prior to attending the Show in which you wish
to be judged.
Your card must be handed to the South Devon judge of the classes before judging begins, and you should identify in which class you wish to be judged.
The judge will mark exhibitors with points out of 10, in each of three
sections: exhibitor’s personal presentation; presentation of animal;
competence in handling of animal. The judge will be encouraged to ask
pertinent questions of the entrants.
The judge will be responsible for returning the completed cards to the
SDHBS office as soon as possible after the show, and in any case by 31st
December. The exhibitors’ two highest-scoring shows will count towards the
winning prize of £200, to be presented at the AGM following the year in
which the cattle were shown, together with a Trophy. In the event of a tie,
the prize money will be divided equally between the winners.

NBA BEEF EXPO Three Counties Showground
24th May 2012
Grateful thanks to all those who helped put together and man the
Society stand at Beef Expo in May – especially Philip Claridge, John
& Robert Hadley, and Malcolm & Thelma Broome for loaning an
excellent display of cattle; and Richard & Diana Wright, Mervyn &
Stephanie Rowe, Chris Page, and Malcolm Perris, for helping with
enquiries on the stand.
Numbers of visitors to the Expo were down on some previous Expo’s,
largely as a result of the rare fine weather, but we were kept busy
with enquiries on the stand for most of the day. A number of
international delegates were welcomed following a very successful
visit the previous day to Matt and Neil Cole’s farm at Princetown,
Dartmoor, to see South Devons and Galloways.
The Expo is one of the most important technical promotional events
of the year, targeting the commercial producer, so it is crucial that
we put on a strong display of pure and cross-breeding cattle. This
year the team comprised Z Colcharton Demetrius, three strong
bulling heifers, three well-grown yearling bulls, a crossbred two-
year old heifer, and a crossbred cow with South Devon calf at foot.
NEW OFFICE SOFTWARE
The updated Breedplan software which runs all our office
administration, called ILR2, is now installed, and is being ‘bedded
down’. Please bear with us whilst we sort out the detailed working
of the system – which will include some customisation for our own
particular needs, and also some teething issues. (We’re not the
Royal Bank of Scotland, thankfully!)
19
You will see a different layout for pedigree certificates which will
include myostatin status where known. It is possible therefore,
that you will receive an invoice for bull registration before you
receive the pedigree certificate in the event that we are awaiting a
laboratory result. But if you need the certificate urgently please
let us know.
There is also a different layout for invoices relating to registrations
and transfers which now itemise the animals concerned.
There is little doubt that the system will greatly favour electronic
transactions, and is already speeding up the processing of
registrations submitted on-line. However, we will still continue to
accommodate paper submissions for as long as is necessary.
In a few months’ time, once everything is working as smoothly as we
can expect it to, a new version of on-line software will be added to
enable members to perform more tasks from their PCs, and more
information will follow in due course.
CLUB DRAWS
The final two draws of the current Club (2011/2012) were made at
the National Show, and the winners each receiving a cheque for
£166.25 were:
Mrs J Rowe, Menheniot, Liskeard, Cornwall
Mr C Phillips, Eastleach, Cirencester, Gloucestershire
The new Club will be launched in July, with tickets available to
purchase at £15 for each number.

POLL GROUP OPEN DAY
Members who are interested in polling are invited to attend this
year’s Poll Group Open Day which is being held by very kind
permission of Richard & Diana Wright, at Oxey Farm, Tilton on the
Hill, Leicestershire, LE7 9DP, on Wednesday 18th July.
Please meet at 12.30 pm for lunch, followed by a farm tour. There
will be a short meeting with tea and cake to finish the afternoon.
If you would like to come please would you let the office know, for
catering purposes.
HELP US TO BUILD THE COMMERCIAL MARKET
Although a pedigree Society, it would be very short-sighted to think
we exist only to look after those wishing to keep a pedigree herd of
South Devons – the ultimate target is to persuade more commercial
beef producers to use South Devons as part of their production
unit, whether to produce suckler replacements or to use as terminal
sires.
It is this market where there is so much potential for expansion,
and why the Society has extended its budget for breed promotion.
But we can only do so much from the office and we urgently need
the help of breeders who are selling animals privately to keep us
informed as to where their sales are made. We can then build a
wider picture and use information (as appropriate) to present show-
cases as examples to the commercial beef producer as to why
he/she should keep South Devons.
22
Obviously the beef marketing schemes set up last year are a great
help to the cause, not only giving outlets for South Devon sired beef
animals but also providing a strong marketing reason for a
commercial unit to acquire a South Devon bull.
Likewise (and I apologise for being repetitive!) we need feedback on
killsheet data to be able to give accurate statistical averages for,
for example, daily live weight gain and carcase grading, to enable us
to build a bigger picture of how the breed is performing. Detail of
sources will be kept confidential.
Please help us to help you, and keep sending us the information
necessary to target the commercial market!
SMITHFIELD FESTIVAL, EAST OF ENGLAND AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM ROGER CLEMENS
“Many South Devon breeders will have a ‘modern’ steer or heifer that is too muscled to breed. We need these animals to give our Society a lot of publicity, and it is not too late to start preparing them for this year’s show.
1 We need to know of breeders who have such animals 2 Assistance can be given if you wish to prepare and show these
cattle 3 There are specialists who show these type of animals and some
would be happy to buy your animal. Primestock exhibitors include: Mr & Mrs Bunkum, Cornwall (01479 342490); M R & R J Rowe, Cornwall (01579 342407); Mr & Mrs Harper, Devon/Cornwall (01409 271376); Mr R Rundle, Cornwall (01637 875798); Mr S Ward, Cornwall (01726 882947); Mr & Mrs Quantick, Devon (01626 366631); Mr A Barrow, Devon (01626 821221); Mr J Ward, Somerset (01373 812414); Mr G R

Fountaine, Bedfordshire (01908 563123); Mr D Farr, Leicestershire (01509 504057); Mr D Irving, Dumfriesshire (01461 500110); Mr J East, Oxfordshire (01869 350267); and Mr P Claridge, Buckinghamshire (01296 730235). This list is by no means complete, and we do need to know more names.
Please telephone Roger Clemens as soon as possible if you can help – 01841 540256. An articulated lorry will travel up from Cornwall on its way to Peterborough for the Show which takes place on 30th November and 1st December, and can pick up on its way. Shared transport may be possible from other areas. We can look after your animal at the show if you need. Thank you” Please also note that the Society offers a financial incentive for
exhibitors at both the Smithfield Festival and at the English
Winter Fair to help with costs.
BRITISH CATTLE BREEDERS CLUB
NEW COMPETITION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
Some of our younger members might be interested in a new
Competition being held by the BCBC, which will be open to all young
people aged under 26.
The Competition will take the form of a multimedia presentation
lasting no more than 10 minutes promoting the breed of choice
(assuredly South Devon!) The winners in each section (beef and
dairy) will give their presentations at the British Cattle Conference
in January 2013 and also receive generous cash prizes.
24
This provides a great opportunity to promote the breed at the
Conference, but also provides the young person with an excellent
opportunity to promote themselves to an audience that includes many
potential employers. Up to six young people in each section will be
shortlisted to make their presentations to the judging panel at the
Conference, so this is also an opportunity for these young people to
attend the Conference for free!
The task is to “design and produce a multimedia presentation to
promote the cattle breed (or crossbreed) of your choice for a
clearly defined, profitable beef or dairy production system”. Marks
will be awarded for presentation skills; use of multimedia; coherence
of arguments; content including genetics, profitability, and
environmental sustainability.
The closing date is Saturday 15th December, and entries should be
submitted on a disk, stick, or by e-mail to BCBC Competition, Lake
Villa, Bradworthy, Holsworthy, Devon, EX22 7SQ, tel 01409 241962,
e-mail [email protected]
HEALTH PLANNING
Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD)
If you are considering entering animals for the Autumn Show & Sale
at Bristol on 2nd October, please remember that they will need to be
tested clear of the BVD antigen or from a CHeCS member herd
that is currently accredited free of BVD; and all animals must be
double vaccinated for BVD.
Council have ruled that if the animal is not from a herd accredited
clear of BVD under CHeCS, the vendor must then display on their
25
penning a certificate proving a BVD antigen negative test, and it is
the vendor’s responsibility to do this. The certificate will need to
be issued by an approved laboratory and show the animal ID, date of
test, and test result, so please ask for your vet’s help.
BVD is a big focus for disease control, particularly in Scotland, and
an important step was taken this year with a requirement for
animals being shown at the Royal Highland Show to have proof of a
clear BVD test. How soon before English and Welsh Shows follow
suit?
New TB Rules
The new TB rules (see the last newsletter) come into effect at the
beginning of July, and exhibitors taking cattle to overnight shows
will be amongst those directly affected.
All cattle from 1 and 2 yearly TB testing areas will be required to
be pre-movement tested for shows if they are staying overnight or
are housed.
Planning for shows and sales will therefore become much more
complicated and herd testing will have to be very carefully arranged
so as not to compromise cattle movements.
