Providence Day School senior field hockey mid-fielder Grayson Buben is closing out an outstanding prep career for the Chargers. The daughter of John and Leslie Buben will head north on I-77 to attend Davidson College next season. Grayson is excited to continue playing the game she loves in addition to chasing an outstanding education at Davidson

The sport of Field Hockey has been growing by leaps and bounds here in Charlotte. Grayson jumped on board at just the right time when she first picked up the sport in seventh grade. With hard work and dedication to improvement, Grayson became a col-lege prospect.

As a midfielder, Grayson carries many responsi-bilities on the field. She shares those with us.

“My main responsibilities are to pass and dis-tribute the ball in the right places to set our offense up for success, creating forward momentum. I have to recover quickly from offense to defense and help keep the other team out of the scoring circle. I also get to take clean hits or make strategic passes on penalty corners.”

Grayson worked hard to become a college pros-pect. She shares how it happened.

“Mostly through attending and performing well at summer college camps, where the coaches get to see and meet you on and off the field over a four or five day stretch. There is great one on one interaction with the coaches and college players at the camps.”

“I also play with Charlotte Ambush Select Team. We travel to tournaments in California, Pennsyl-vania, Virginia, and Florida. We play indoor tour-naments in the Winter and Outdoor tournaments

in Spring, Summer and Fall. The Marvin Ridge Middle School Varsity Volleyball Team has been named the Sonny’s BBQ Team of the Week. The Mavericks completed their regular season undefeated with a 16-0 record. Under the leader-ship of Coach Jo Meewes, this team proved to be another strong and deep volleyball team at Marvin Ridge Middle School.

Charlotte Catholic senior tennis player Lizzy Fiepke has been named the P. Saylor Fence / Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools Good Sport of the Week. The 17 year old daughter of Tom and Julie Fiepke has been playing tennis since the age of ten.

Lizzy is a three-time state qualifier in doubles and two time doubles regional champion for the Cougars. Her tennis play has taught Lizzy to be more confident and balance time between friends, schoolwork, and tennis.

Lizzy carries a 4.52 GPA and is in the top 10% of her class. She is in the National Honor Society and an AP Scholar. Lizzie plans to attend Northwestern University in Illinois or UNC-Chapel Hill next season. Away from school, Lizzy volunteers at the hospital during the summers and tutors kids at Cotswold and Myers Park Traditional Elementary Schools during the school year. AUDREY NELSON LEADS MYERS PARK GOLF TEAM

Myers Park High School junior golfer Audrey Nelson is leading the way for the Mustangs Golf Team. The daughter of Tom and Anna Nelson finished as the runner-up in the Southwestern 4A Championship with a score of 7�. Her top nine hole score has been a ��. Audrey has been play-ing the game since the age of six and is now seeing the rewards of all her hard work on the course and driving range.

Audrey and the members of the Myers Park High School Girl’s Golf Team have won three consecutive team conference championships. This season, Audrey has recorded the lowest score for each match and finished the regular season with a �8 average. She scored All-Conference hon-ors for the third straight season. Audrey has also been the North Carolina Drive, Chip and Putt State Champion in the past.

Inside the classroom, Audrey is an excellent student with a 4.6 grade point average. She is in the International Bac-calaureate Program at Myers Park and also serves as a member of the Myers Park Academic Team.

Away from the classroom and golf course, Audrey plays violin in the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra. They performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City this past summer.

Audrey Nelson is certainly a Student-Athlete to keep an eye on over the next year. Her hard work and dedication to school, golf and the fine arts will carry her on to great success in college and beyond.

Eleven year old Gavin Shrader has been named the Union County Student Athlete of the Week Powered by Huntington Learning Center. The son of Tracey and Christie Shrader plays football for the WCWAA Junior Pee Wee Football Titans. Gavin attends Antioch Elementary where he is a fifth grader. His favorite class in school is Math.

Gavin plays all over the field for his team, spending time at Receiver, Fullback, Linebacker, Cornerback, Quarterback and even Center. He also enjoys playing basketball at WCWAA in the winter.

Gavin’s favorite football memory came when he was playing QB and ran a bootleg to the right side. The other team ran to the left ex-cept for a Cornerback that he outran to score a 76 yard touchdown.

Congratulations to Gavin Shrader for being named the Union County Student Athlete of the Week Powered by Huntington Learning Center.

Breakout Star of the Week “Honoring Student-Athletes Preparing For Future Success”

AShLyN hANSONMyers Park High School Freshman Ashlyn Hanson has been named the Karsey Glass Breakout Star of the Week. The 14 year old daughter of Mark and Tammy Hanson began playing volleyball at age nine after watching her older sister, Alexa, on the court. Ashlyn is a year round volleyball player, also participating on a club volleyball team. Ashlyn plays the position of outside hitter on the court. The position requires Ashlyn to pass the best ball she can to the setter and then quickly get into position, to hit the ball.

Ashlyn is a member of the Mustangs Varsity team and she hopes to one day play college volleyball. She has built a nice resume to date including a trip to the USAV Junior National Championship and playing three years of high level club volleyball.

Inside the classroom, Ashlyn is a straight A student and she is in the IB Program at Myers Park. Ashlyn works hard to strive to be the very best she can be inside and out of school. Congratulations to Ashlyn Hanson for being named the Karsey Glass Breakout Star of the Week.

Ardrey Kell High School senior football quarterback Luke Hefferly has been named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week. The son of David & Robyn Hefferly was named as an All-Conference player last season for the Knights. His top sports memory came in his junior season when he led the Knights to a big win over rival Providence and passed for four touchdowns and ran for another.

Luke works hard to serve as a leader on this team and strives to help the Knights navigate tough situations as any good leader would do. While this season has been challenging for the Knights Luke has kept his spirits and is working hard to help the

team finish the season on a high note.

Inside the classroom, Luke is an excellent student with a 4.8 grade point average. He is a member of the National Honor Society, DECA, Math Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. Luke plans to attend Auburn University to study Engineer-ing next year. Congratulations to Luke Hefferly for being named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week.

SYDNEY GREESONSouth Mecklenburg High School junior cross country and track athlete Sydney Greeson has been named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week. The 16 year old daughter of Ron and Christine Greeson started competing on a running club at South Charlotte Middle School and has now progressed to the level of being a successful high school runner. In addition to cross country Sydney competes in track where she lists a personal best time of 5:57 in the 1600 meter event.

Sydney works hard with her coaches to develop her stride and running form. She continues to push herself during practice

and works hard to not slow down or give in when the run gets tough.

Inside the classroom, Sydney carries a 4.2 grade point average with several AP courses on her schedule. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, Student Government and FCA organization at South Meck. Sydney also enjoys tutoring students at Carmel Middle School. Liam PickettArdrey Kell High School senior football player Liam Pickett has been named the winner of the Shoeless Enterprises Leadership Award. The son of Liam and Marcie Pickett also plays basketball and lacrosse throughout the year. In football, he plays Linebacker, Receiver and Tight End. Liam also plays Midfield in lacrosse and power for-ward in basketball. Liam also carries the honor of holding a second degree black belt in martial arts.

Liam works hard to help his team as a leader and to guide younger players through their develop-ment on and off the field. He often expresses his belief of never giving up no matter how hard a task may be.

Inside the classroom, Liam carries a 4.3 grade point average and has been on the A/B Honor Roll all throughout high school. Liam is planning to attend either UNC-Chapel Hill or the United States Merchant Marine Academy next year.

Boating Without Owning - It’s About TIME!

ChASE FIEdORMarvin Ridge High School junior football player Chase Fiedor has been named the Carefree Boat Club Rising Star of the Week. The 17 year old son of Kent and Janet Fiedor plays offensive guard and defensive tackle for the undefeated Mavericks. Chase has been in the starting lineup for the team since the ninth grade and he is most proud of never missing a snap due to fatigue or injury. Chase is working hard to earn the chance to play college football following high school graduation.

The Mavericks are primed for a deep run in the playoffs this year.

“This will be the second time that I have been involved in the playoffs and they are always a great experience. It’s always exciting to play, because you know the stakes are

a lot higher. The experience is also extremely rewarding, especially if you make it to the championship which has been a goal of our team since the start of the season.”

Inside the classroom, Chase carries a 4.2 grade point average and has earned an academic letter every semester of high school. He is also active with Paws In the Panhandle, an animal shelter. He was inspired to begin to help the shelter and find new homes for dogs after adopting one of his own. Congratulations to Chase Fiedor for being named the Carefree Boat Club Rising Star of the Week.

Ardrey Kell High School senior multi-sport athlete Emma Wiese has been named the Community Hero of the Week. The 17 year daughter of Bill and Doris Wiese participates on the swim, cross country and track teams at Ardrey Kell.

Emma has been a competitive swimmer for many years and as a freshman she went on the hunt for a new fall sport. After settling on cross-country, Emma went to work to become a top runner. Her personal best time has been a 1�:�0. Emma works hard to stay focused in each race and push herself to go faster when she feels she can’t.

Emma has volunteered in excess of 150 hours at Carolinas Medical Center in Pineville and also served as a volunteer at the Room At The Inn through her church. She enjoys giving back to her community and helping others.

Inside the classroom, Emma is an A student and carries a rigorous load of AP and Honors level classes. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Rho Kappa Honor Society and the Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society. Emma hopes to attend UNC-Chapel Hill or NC State next fall. Grayson has always worked hard to achieve academic success. She carries a �.�5 grade point average and is enrolled in three AP classes this year. Grayson is also a member of the National Honor Society. She has been involved in SOS (Students of Service) and volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House since the �th grade.

It’s great to see all the talented field hockey players being discovered here in our community. The South Charlotte Sports Report is very excited for Grayson and we wish her the very best this season and next year at Davidson. Good Luck Grayson!
