Marvin Ridge senior soccer player Chelsea Vickers has been an all-star on and off the field for the Mavericks. The daugh-ter of Desmond and Linda Vickers has played on the Varsity squad for all four years of high school. The 18 year-old strik-er plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and she hopes to play club soccer for the Tar Heels. Let’s Go Beyond The Game with Chelsea to learn more. What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“My top three athletic accomplishments include making the Varsity team as a Freshman, scoring 24 goals my Junior year, and receiving All-Conference, All-Region, and All-State honors as a Junior.”

What are your favorite memories playing soccer over the years?“My favorite soccer memories stem from the teammates that I have had the pleasure to play with. My favorite mem-ories include winning City Cup with my U9 team, playing on my dad’s team, travelling around the country with my ECNL team, and winning games with my high school team. I have had the privilege of being a co-captain of the Marvin Ridge soccer team and being able to play with the current team has been one of my favorite memories because they are all so hardworking.”

What is the best part of your game?“The best parts of my game are my speed and composure. I am a relatively fast person who can run past the defenders, whether it’s from a through ball or by taking one of the players on. I am also able to see where other players are running so that I can play a good ball to them. While sometimes I hold onto the ball too long, I can play off of my mistakes quickly. I think my pas-sion plays into it as well, so I push myself harder to try to play my best and either have an assist or score a goal each game.” Is there player you look up to or model your game after?“There is not a specific player that I model my game after, but I definitely look up to my dad as a soccer figure. He played soccer throughout his life and in college. He was one of my soccer coaches so he always pushed me a little harder than my other teammates because he knew what I was capable of. He

is an exceptional player and I look up to him for that rea-son and for all of the support he has given me as I began to grow as a player.”

How well have you performed in the classroom? “I have performed well in the classroom with a class rank of 10 and a 5.08 GPA. I am in a challenging program at my school and I have been on the A/B Honor Roll my Junior and Senior years and the A Honor Roll my Freshman and Sophomore years. I work hard in all of my classes in order to keep my grades up. I am a member of the National French Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and Beta Club.”

How have you been able to balance academics and athletics?“I am in the IB program at my school, so I have a large workload to begin with, and sometimes soccer makes it difficult to work on it. I try to balance my time between playing soccer and doing homework or studying for a test because I know that I am lucky to have the opportunity to do both. There have been times where I’ve had to do my homework on the bus going to a game or stay up late to fin-

ish my homework because I try to excel at both academics and athletics and I never leave anything unfinished. It has been hard at times, but I have been able to keep my grades up by completing all work so that I can have the time to play soccer as well.”

Are you involved in any community service projects?“Yes, I have done over 150 hours of community service over the past two years. My favorite project that I worked on was Cleats for Kids which is an organization that collects gently-used soccer equipment for less fortunate children around the world. With this organization, I set up sports equipment drives around the community, specifically the men’s soccer games, and col-lected cleats, socks, shorts, jerseys, etc, and by the end of the drives, we col-lected over 250 items. It has been a humbling experience working with Cleats for Kids because I have been able to give less fortunate children the opportu-nity to play the sport that has made the greatest impact on my life.”

Marvin Ridge High School Senior Chandler Nikodemski has loved baseball for as long as he can remember. The son of Dean and Julie Niko-demski is now finishing his final season for the Mavericks, who are currently making a run at another 3A State Championship. Especially in his senior season, Chandler has become a vital tool to the team. He currently leads the country in doubles and holds the second highest total for homeruns this season by a high school baseball player in Union County. He has also contributed to the Marvin Ridge baseball team by singing the National Anthem at two home games this season. Let’s go Beyond the Game with Chandler Nikodemski.

When did you begin to play baseball and why?“I started T-Ball at age 4, and started because I was very interested in sports at a young age and showed potential. I immediately fell in love with the sport and wanted to play at the highest level.” What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“Winning the 3A state baseball championships and three football titles and also participating in the AAA High School Home Run Derby.” What are you most proud of over the last two years at Marvin Ridge baseball?“Singing the National Anthem on senior night was my proudest moment. It was a complete surprise for my parents because they had never heard me sing before, and I know how much it meant to them for me to stand on the field in front of all those people and sing to them as a tribute to all my years playing baseball and singing in my high school choir. My dad said to me that it was the best day of his life.” What areas do you think you can help the team excel in during the Mavericks run for another state championship?“Driving in runs and getting into scoring positions is what I am best at, then I play first base when [Jake] Kuchmaner is on the bump. We have such a close knit group of guys, especially the seniors, and I believe our chemistry coming off of last years run has pushed us to do bigger things this year.” Have you made any college plans?“I plan to attend East Carolina in the fall to study Business and Criminology.” How well do you perform in the classroom?“My grades have always been a little more average, but my parents always pushed me to do my best in all areas of my life. I have been on the Honor Roll multiple times in high school, and I was recognized last semester for my “Aca-demic Excellence”. In my junior year I also joined the Music Honors Society to further my interest in music and help add to my college applications.”

    throughout the season.

Ending the season by receiving the honor of being named MVP is every athlete’s dream, but for 17-year old Marvin Ridge junior golfer Zack Swanson, it was reality. The son of Chip and Diane, Zack finished with a low scoring average of just over par. From the humble beginnings of learning the game from his father to racking up a long list of accolades, Zack has left quite a mark on the Maverick’s golf program. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about Zack. When did you begin golfing? Why?“I have had a club in my hand ever since I can remember. My father Chip has passed on his love for the game to me and I just hit the ground running. I remember hitting golf balls in front of members at our club even before I

was in kindergarten. The game just came so easy to me and I realized at a young age that I had some potential to be great at it.” What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“One of my top accomplishments would be earn-ing the Sportsmanship Award my freshman year at the State Championship. I was also named to the 2015 North Carolina All-State Team which consists of the top 30 players in the state. Being named All-Conference three years in a row and winning the Southern Carolina Conference Player of the Year my sophomore year would definitely make the list of accomplishments as well.” As you look back on your golf career, what are a couple of memories that really stand out for you?“There is one memory that stands out above them all. I was playing with my dad and grandfather at Hilton Head National the summer before my freshman year. I ended up breaking 70 for the first time ever by shooting 69, beating my dad for the first time (by one shot), and having my first ever eagle. It was a big day in the Swanson household. Even though it was not during a big tournament or high school match, it will remain an important day in my life just because I put all the things together that my dad had taught me and beat him with it.” Do you play any other sports at Marvin Ridge?“I played baseball growing up in Florida and I loved it. I pitched and caught mostly for various teams. I pitched two no-hitters (age 11-12) and received the league MVP at 12-years old during my last year in Little League. These two posi-tions taught me how to deal with adversity and intimidation. They helped me develop an alter ego and learn how to “get in the zone” to where once I stepped out onto the field or the course, I was a different person and I was there to win. Once I got back to the dugout or off the course, I was talking and cracking jokes with my other team mates/players. I have combined both of these traits into my golf game and it helps me stay in the moment and take my game one shot at a time.” What is next for you following high school?“After high school I plan to pursue a Division 1 college golf career and hopefully perform well in both the classroom and on the course. In college,

I plan to study Sports Training/Physical Therapy and after graduating, I’d like to chase my dream of becoming a professional golfer. As one of our great leaders Abe Lincoln once said, “the only way to predict your future is to create it,” so I plan to work hard to do just that.”

How well do you perform in the classroom? “I have received all A’s and B’s my throughout my entire middle/high school career. In the classroom I have a 4.1 weighted GPA and a 3.55 non-weighted GPA while participating in Honors classes.” Do you have any memorable academic moments?“I was nominated by teachers in middle school while living in Florida to attend the Junior Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. in 2011. It was a great experience to be around kids that share some of the same traits and were there to grow their leadership skills. It humbled me to realize how privileged I was to be able to attend such a program with these extraordinary kids from all over the country.”

    “THE LEAGUE OF CHAMPIONS”

The South Charlotte Sports Report and South Charlotte Sports Radio is proud to present our 3rd Annual All-South Baseball Team. The team is composed of players from schools inside the coverage area of The South Charlotte Sports Report and South Charlotte Sports Radio. Input has been asked for and re-ceived from high school baseball coaches and other respected members of the South Charlotte baseball community. Unlike most of the end of the season recognition teams produced by media outlets, The South Charlotte Sports Radio Team has attended over 60 high school baseball games this spring and watched each team and player in the area play multiple games. Players that play multiple positions were eligible to be selected at each position and may be listed at a secondary position or DH to fit into the structure of the All-South Team. As with any recognition team, tough choices had to be made and there are many outstanding players that may not appear on the 2016 All South Baseball Team. We salute all players, coaches and families that worked hard all season to present another great year of baseball inside our community. 2016 All South Baseball Team Award Winners
