WOW, THAT WAS FUN, BUT IT SURE DOES HURT NOW

Last Saturday afternoon I

was coaxed out of retirement for an adult softball tourna-ment to help Olde Providence Recreation Association raise money for a lightning detec-tion system. A piece of equip-ment that EVERY youth ath-letic venue should have and abide by. Paying attention to the detection system is just as important as having one. I was recently told about an area athletic association that didn’t close down shop when the system went off and indicated

lightning two miles away. They wanted to finish the game I was told. Wow!Back to the softball tournament. I had a ton of fun, the competitive juices began to

flow, but every time another player went down with a pulled muscle, I would question how smart of an idea it was to be out on the field. Luckily I made it to the end without serious injury. I did learn a few things about this 40 plus year old body. I don’t run as fast as I used to, I have very few reflexes left, I can’t stop as easy when I get going from first to third and I still swing at bad pitches. Trust me, I wasn’t the only one that realized these same facts!

Now as I sit here 48 hours later my thighs are burning, I can hardly lift my legs and my arm hurts! I wouldn’t trade this pain though, it was way to much fun to walk away with the first place trophy and the title of Summer Bash Champion! All the guys on the team were great and I had two great seven year old coaches; Tyler and Tanner!

NEWPOINT LEARNING CENTER Don’t let the summer become a brain drain for your child. Take a look at New Point Learning on page six. My friend Gary Lang has some wonderful programs planned and he also offers ACT/SAT prep classes.

BEYOND THE GAME WITH CARTER MILLER

Thirteen-year-old Carter Miller has achieved a high level of success in his chosen forte, swimming. The eighth grade son of Charlie and Stephanie Miller always ends up on top in both academics and swimming. Carter com-pleted his eighth grade season at Carmel Middle School this week and will head to Myers Park High School next year where he hopes to earn a spot on the varsity swim team. Now lets hop out of the pool with Carter Miller.

How did you begin your career as a swimmer?“My career as a swimmer started with summer league. My little brother wanted to swim so I said what the heck. Then my mom signed me up for swim lessons at

MAC. After that I joined the team and progressed from there.”

Have you made any goals for yourself? How do you plan on achieving those goals?“Lately I have entered in an open water swimming competition and have decided to do the 5K, 3K, and 2K swims. This is going to be a tough challenge and I am going to have to push myself to complete it.”

What are some of your favorite memories of swimming?“Some of my favorite memories are from championship meets. The competitors are fierce and it makes you want to beat them!”

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?“My advice to new swimmers is to just do your best. If you keep at it your oppor-tunities are endless.”

Summer Brain DrainPresented by New Point Learning

Classes at NewPoint Learning Center during the summer can stop the “BRAIN DRAIN,” that most students experience during their break from school. Studies found that summer learning loss equals at least one month of instruction, when chil-dren return to school they test at least one month lower than when they left school in the spring. Learning loss in math is the most serious. On average, students lose ap-proximately 2.6 months of grade level equivalence in math computation skills during the summer. Many parents feel their children want a break during the summer from learning. Research shows just over 50% of the students actually want to be involved in a summer program.

We will start classes on June 14, 2010, offering one hour sessions starting at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 11:30 a.m. each weekday morning. Our classes will feature the subjects of reading, writing, and math. In each class, one teacher will have 4 to 5 students at her table. The cost of each class will be $15.00 per one hour session. Students may attend as many sessions as they choose. We will also have one-on-one tutoring and foreign language classes available.

Reading enrichment and improvement can be accomplished over the summer. Math tutoring can help fill gaps from the past year and introduce next year’s mate-rial during the summer. Students can return to school next fall with a head start and added confidence.

Over the last few years, The South Charlotte Sports Report has hosted over 20 basketball camps. With each camp, we see more and more return cus-tomers. We have surveyed the campers and one re-quest seems to always come to the top, “We want a camp just for girls!” We have heard your request and responded with this exciting camp!

Our basketball camp focuses on the development of basketball fundamentals. Our philosophy on suc-cess in basketball revolves around a building a solid fundamental base. With the girls only camp we are able to focus on basketball instruction as it applies to the female skill-set. Coach Conrad has coached some of the top high school basketball players in the area and will share his knowledge with the younger

players in the community. Each child will receive instruction on shooting,

moving without the ball, dribbling, defense, passing and rebounding. We maintain a low coach to camp-er ratio allowing the campers to get to know all the coaches on a first hand basis. We also strive to keep campers in the same groups with their friends and other players their age. Our camps are designed to place campers in position to succeed inside the camp and beyond.

This Basketball Camp is also designed to give fe-male players of all ages and abilities the chance to experience success on the basketball court! Each player is placed into a position that will allow for maximum enjoyment of their week of basketball camp.

Don’t delay in registering for this camp, we ex-pect a sellout!

“Caring for South Charlotte Athletes and their Families for 20 years”

Bill Whiteside, a top player and senior on the men’s varsity lacrosse team at Myers Park High School, now has a state championship title to celebrate. Bill, the son of Jim and Lydia White-side, is an outstanding attack player who played a huge part in defeating Apex High School in order to bring home the first official state lacrosse championship in North Carolina.

How and when did you get in-volved with playing lacrosse?“My first year playing was in 3rd grade, when I switched from baseball to lacrosse. I played for CYLA (Char-lotte Youth Lacrosse Association). My brother played lacrosse and I was getting bored with baseball and he convinced me to make the switch. Most of my friends were playing lacrosse too.”

What do you like most about lacrosse?“You’re always active and it’s a fast-paced game. Every game is differ-ent. It’s cool to be on the field scoring goals, especially at the Myers Park stadium, hearing the crowd roar.”

What is the highlight of your high school lacrosse career?“The state championship vs. Apex, the stage it was on couldn’t get much better. I had a hat trick.”

What has becoming a sanctioned sport done for lacrosse in North Carolina?“Well, it’s done a lot. Now that it’s sanctioned, kids in middle school don’t just look at Myers Park lacrosse as a club sport and don’t feel like they have to go to a school like Charlotte

Catholic for a real lacrosse team. More kids are getting interested, especially with the state champion-ship.”

What are your future plans? Do you plan to continue playing lacrosse?“I’m going to Alabama this fall and they don’t have a Varsity Lacrosse team, but they have a club team. I’ll definitely play club lacrosse there.”

What advice do you have for someone who wants to get started playing lacrosse?“Buy a goal, start practicing, and find the position you love playing the most. Once you find that position, it can be fun to persevere and work hard to see what you can accomplish. It’s never too late to start playing either.”

Myers Park was not a preseason favorite to win the state cham-pionship this year; how did you and the team pull it off?“Most of us had been playing lacrosse since we were in middle school, many with Coach Gambril’s team, South Charlotte Cyclones. I played at Country Day but the guys from his Cyclones team already had a good

relationship with him. [This season,] we were seniors and we had confi-dence we could get it done, and this had to be the year. We bought into our coach’s system and just believed. Our motto was “STP” (Something To Prove) and it was also on our jer-seys.”

Are there any athletes you look up to and why?“My brother, he played lacrosse and I looked up to him because he was always a harder worker than I was, so I pushed myself more which gave me an edge. He won a state champi-onship at Country Day and made me want one too.”

What do you think are the keys to being a successful attack player?“The keys are finding what you’re good at and practicing that. And finding whatever your special skill set is and using that against the defenders. I was never a big guy, so I had to be quick and fast to get past the defenders. Will Lowe [Myers Park Lacrosse player] is a guy who is strong and has a great shot.”

Dear Participants, Families and Guests,

Thank you for your support of The 2nd Annual Battle of The Border Showcase Games. This event is designed to provide recognition to many of the top travel and showcase baseball and softball players in our region. Thank you for lending your support to this special event.

We are very appreciative of Winthrop University for inviting us onto their lovely campus for our baseball games andNationFordHighSchoolforgrantingususeofoneofthenicesthighschoolfieldsinourregion.

We also want to thank Keith Hawthorne Ford, Champion Sportswear, Wilson and Buca Di Beppo Restaurant for their sponsorship of the event. Please give each of these companies a chance to earn your business.

We also want to thank all the fantastic baseball and softball coaches in our area for helping us identify this out-standing group of deserving players. It’s hard to believe that 8-12 years ago, many of these kids were playing tee ball at a local athletic association. Through hard work and the dedication of parents and coaches, these players have become successful athletes.

We also want to thank our families and friends for all their help in turning this dream into reality. Our goal is to build The Battle of The Border Showcase Games into one of the top events on The East Coast for baseball and softball.

Sit back and enjoy the games! Tripp Roakes Jeff SchaeferSouth Charlotte Sports Report Carolinas Baseball Centerwww.southcharlottesports.com www.cbcbaseball.net

BOBCATS WELCOME FANS TO OPEN HOUSE JUNE 24TH

The success of the Bobcats last season was well documented. From their first postseason appearance to a franchise record for wins to Ger-ald Wallace being named an All-Star, Charlotte’s NBA team seemed to reach a major milestone every month. For local sports fans, this was the kind of season they had been waiting for from Head Coach Larry Brown’s team. But in spite of the tremendous success they achieved on the court, arguably the biggest news of the year happened off the court when NBA legend Michael Jordan purchased a controlling interest in the franchise from team founder Robert L. Johnson.

The greatest player of all time is making a run at greatest owner of all time, and he’s chosen to do it here in the Queen City. At the press conference to announce the purchase back in March, Jordan spoke about how much it meant to come back home to the Carolinas and build a connection between his team and the community. He spoke about turning them into a model franchise by putting a winner on the floor and creating a winning atmosphere in the arena. And in just two months time, he managed to get the Bobcats well on the way to ac-complishing both.

The team has already sold more than 1,000 new season tickets for the coming campaign, but there are still good seats available at Time Warner Cable Arena for 2010-11. With seats stating as low as $10 per game in one of theleague’s finest venues, it’s not hard to understand why tickets are selling fast. But for families who haven’t yet made the commitment to next season, the Bobcats are hosting an Open House on June 24 at 6 P.M. at the arena for fans to check out available seats, meet Gerald Wallace, enjoy free food, drinks, music and interactive games for the kids and watch the 2010 NBA Draft on the big screen. The event is free to the public, so if you’ve been thinking about joining the crowd at Time Warner Cable Arena for another great season on NBA action then make your way to the Open House. I’ll see you there.
