While going just 0-4 on the road this season, Cal State L.A. has found suc- cess on their home floor, sporting a 6-2 record at the Eagles Nest. Sonoma State is looking for a bit of redemption over CSULA for knocking the Seawolves out of the NCAA tournament in the first round last season. The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series, 28-6, but SSU is 3-3 in regular season play versus CSULA since 2007. Seawolves Sweep Through Weekend, Upset No. 21 Otters Sonoma State cruised to three straight sweeps last week, topping it off with a dominating performance over then-21st-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday. The Seawolves held their opponents to a .119 hitting percentage, including a .036 output by the Lum- berjack offense on Wednesday. In Saturday’s victory over the Otters, Sonoma State held the former National Player of the Week, Rheann Fall, to just five kills and a negative hitting percentage (-.033), much thanks to the defense of All-American Taylor Krenwinkel. She had 60 digs in nine sets (6.67 d/s), including 25 against Humboldt State. The other SSU All-Amer- ican, Keala Peterson, hammered 33 kills with just six errors in 81 attacks (.333) to lead the high-powered Seawolf offense. Seawolves Against Nationally Ranked Opponents Sonoma State hasn’t had much success against nationally ranked opponents in their history. However, the Seawolves upset then-21st-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay in three straight sets on Saturday evening, the first win over a ranked team since SSU did so last season against then-25th-ranked Chico State (Nov. 6). Since volleyball records began to be kept in 1991, the Seawolves (known as the Cossacks upuntil the 2002 season) are 22-119 against teams ranked in the Top 25 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll. Sonoma State has never beaten a Top Five team in its history (0-30). The Seawolves were 2-4 against ranked teams in 2009 and are 1-2 this season. Tough Losses The four losses suffered by the Seawolves this season have been at the hands of teams that have appeared in the national poll this season. The combined record of Seattle Pacific, Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Bernardino -- three of the four teams that SSU has lost to so far this season -- is 38-4. UC San Diego, who was ranked 11th at the time, is at 7-6. Krenwinkel’s Diggin’ It Junior Taylor Krenwinkel is third in the CCAA in digs per set with 4.91. She has 221 this season as she sits at third on the all-time list for digs in a career with 1,283. She needs 422 to top former SSU student-athlete Taylor Manton for the school record (1,704). The Toros have just eight wins in the past four seasons, compiling an 8-91 record dating back to the start of the 2007 season. The only win of the 2010 season came on Sept. 17 against Cal Poly Pomona, a 3-1 victory. Since then, Cal State Dominguez Hills have won just one set in its last 16 chances. Denise Devine is third in the conference with 3.68 kills per set and fourth in points with 3.95 per set. The Seawolves have a seven match win streak against the Toros and are 19-1 in the last 20 contests against CSUDH (25-5 all-time). 2010 Schedule and Results (9-4 overall, 6-3 ccaa) Date Opponent Time/Result 9/3 DOMINICAN W, 3-0 9/3 BYU-HAWAII W, 3-1 9/4 GRAND CANYON W, 3-0 9/4 SEATTLE PACIFIC L, 0-3 9/10 at Cal State East Bay* L, 1-3 9/11 at #11 UC San Diego* L, 0-3 9/17 at Cal State Stanislaus* W, 3-2 9/18 at Chico State* W, 3-0 9/23 CAL POLY POMONA* W, 3-2 9/25 #5 CSU SAN BERNARDINO* L, 0-3 9/29 HUMBOLDT STATE* W, 3-0 10/1 SAN FRANCISCO STATE* W, 3-0 10/2 #21 CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY* W, 3-0 10/8 at CSU Dominguez Hills* 3:00 pm 10/9 at Cal State L.A.* 1:00 pm 10/15 UC SAN DIEGO* 7:00 pm 10/16 CAL STATE EAST BAY* 7:00 pm 10/22 CHICO STATE* 7:00 pm 10/23 CAL STATE STANISLAUS* 7:00 pm 10/29 at CSU San Bernardino* 7:00 pm 10/30 at Cal Poly Pomona* 1:00 pm 11/3 at Humboldt State* 7:00 pm 11/5 at Cal State Monterey Bay* 7:00 pm 11/6 at San Francisco State* 7:00 pm 11/11 CAL STATE L.A.* 7:00 pm 11/13 CSU DOMINGUEZ HILLS* 7:00 pm *CCAA match; home games in CAPS

Head Coach Bear GrasslHead Coach Bear Grassl returns for his ninth year at the helm of the Sonoma State University volleyball program in 2010. The 2008 CCAA Coach of the Year, Grassl has led the Seawolves to two of the best seasons in school history in ‘08 and ‘09, putting forward a 46-15 record and back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament.

The 2009 Seawolves got out to the best start in program history, winning their first 11 matches on their way to a 23-8 overall record and their highest national ranking ever. Led by a core group of local players and a roster that featured a pair of All-Americans, the Seawolves advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year, where they were upset by Cal State L.A..

The Seawolves burst on to the scene in 2008 when they won 14 of their first 15 matches. As the season went on, Sonoma State stayed close in the CCAA title race but went 9-5 the rest of the season and finished tied for second in the conference (15-5). However, the Seawolves had a stellar home record, going 14-1 on the hardwood of the Seawolf Gym. Sonoma State also appeared in the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament for the first time since 1993 but a first-round loss to conference-foe Chico State knocked the Seawolves out of national title contention.

Grassl took the reigns in 2002 and led the Seawolves to a 15-14 record. He repeated the feat in 2003 (15-14) and then went 14-12 in ‘04. In 2005 and 2006, the Seawolves struggled in the win column playing in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Association with a young squad.

In eight seasons at Sonoma State, Grassl has coached three All-Americans and countless All-Conference All-Region performers. He has also seen his players earn numerous Academic All-District honors in the past few seasons.

A 1991 graduate of Sonoma State, Grassl was head coach at El Molino High School from 1992-2001. During that span, he guided the Lions to six Sonoma County League championships, seven North Coast Section titles, five Northern California championships and one California state championship, in 1999. His career coaching mark at El Molino was an impressive 267-78.

Home Sweet HomeThe Seawolves enjoyed the friendly confines of The Wolves’ Den on their home floor in recent years. During the last three seasons, Sonoma State owns a 32-6 record at home.

National Spotlight on Sonoma StateFor the first time in school history, the Sonoma State volleyball team began the season ranked in the Top 25 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II poll, debuting at No. 21. However, the Seawolves have since dropped out of the Top 25 after a slow start to the 2010 season. SSU spent all but one week ranked in the Top 25 last season and got as high as No. 13 -- the highest ranking in school history.

Follow The Action, LIVE!Can’t make it to The Wolves’ Den to catch the match? The Seawolf Sports Network is making its return to the internet again this season.
