COACHES SEAWOLVES ‘07 REVIEW HISTORY INFORMATIONINTRO

Last year’s team started slow, but had a great finish (8-3 over their last eleven). How does last season’s second half success help this year’s team?

Grassl: I think it adds confidence. We now are confident that we can beat any team in the conference. We were able to pull out a lot of close wins...a lot of fifth-set victories. Now, we’re a year older and more experienced. Last year’s success also gave us a sense of what works for us. We now know the style of play that works for us and will enable us to have success in 2008.

How does the CCAA shape up in 2008?

Grassl: As always, the CCAA is tough. All of the best teams (San Bernardino, Chico, Pomona, L.A.) return pretty much everyone. It all starts with Cal State San Bernardino...they’re a favorite to win the national championship. All of the top teams have incred-ible depth. I think that the biggest difference in the CCAA is the quality of the lower half. The teams at the bottom of the standings are much more talented than ever before. San Francisco State seems to have really hit the ground running and Stanislaus is much better. There are no nights off in the CCAA.

008 SEASON PREVIEWQ&A WITH HEAD COACH BEAR GRASSL

Kristy Sather and the Seawolves hope to make their first trip to the regionals since ‘93.

What newcomers do you expect to step in and make a difference in 2008?

Grassl: We have a lot of talented newcomers. Ali Walker comes in and should be an anchor for us. She will solidify our ball handling and service reception. Taylor Krenwinkel is going to step right in as our starting libero and Kelsey Dall will also see a lot of time as a defensive specialist.

You lost two of the top defensive players in school history in Taylor Manton and Lillian Harms. How do you go about replacing that duo?

Grassl: They will definitely be tough to replace, but I think we’ve done a nice job filling the holes. We also lost Sarah Hillier, a player who was able to absorb a lot of the jobs that don’t show up in the stats. Ali Walker will fill her role this season. In all we lose five of our six service receivers...Devin Scully is the only returner. The service reception unit is the bedrock of the team, like the offensive line on a football team. With Ali, Taylor, and Kelsey I think we pick up right where we left off last year.

What are some characteristics you’ve seen from this year’s team?

Grassl: From a personality standpoint, they seem fairly peaceful. Strategically we’ve become a low-error, low-risk team. To put in in football terms again, we’re a running team not a passing team. We may be a little slower and more predictable, but we’re sure to get our best swings in. We strive to be as efficient and error free as possible and that’s more important than ever with the new 25-point set (instead of the old mark of 30). The game is too short to give up points. We’ve built a team that is able to stay in a rally. We’re a little smaller, but we have good high ball hitters, especially Kristy Sather, who is one of the top left sides in the conference. Marianne Fox is the kind of player that fits perfectly in our system.

What are your expectations/goals for 2008?

Grassl: We’re not that far off from being a playoff team. We feel that if we are successful in our non-conference schedule, we’ll go to the regionals. The CCAA is really strong this year...five CCAA teams could be among the eight regional qualifiers. If we’d have played better in our non-conference games last year, we might have gone to the regionals.

 SEAWOLVES ‘07 REVIEW HISTORY INFORMATIONINTRO

BEAR GRASSLHead Coach Ed ‘Bear’ Grassl returns for his seventh year at the helm of the Sonoma State University volleyball program.

After a tough a tough start to the 2007 season, the Seawolves found their stride in the second half of the year, going 8-3 over their final 11 games to finish 13-14, 9-9 CCAA. During their strong second half push, the Seawolves knocked off three nationally ranked teams. With many returners, including all-region outside hitter Kristy Sather, the Seawolves look forward to even more success in 2008.

Grassl took the reigns in 2002 and led the Seawolves to a 15-14 record. He repeated the feat in 2003 (15-14) and then went 14-12 in ‘04. In 2005 and 2006, the Seawolves struggled in the win column playing in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Association with a young squad.

In six seasons at Sonoma State, Grassl has coached 12 All-Conference performers and has a 26-17 record against Northern California CCAA opponents (Chico, Stanislaus, SF State, Monterey Bay, Humboldt). He has also seen his players earn three Academic All-District honors in the past two seasons.

A 1991 graduate of Sonoma State, Grassl was head coach at El Molino High School from 1992-2001. During that span, he guided the Lions to six Sonoma County League cham-pionships, seven North Coast Section titles, five Northern California championships and one California state champi-onship, in 1999. His career coaching mark at El Molino was an impressive 267-78.

Terminology Change – “Game” changed to “Set”The term “game” has been changed to “set.” The winner of a match is still decided by the first team to win three sets.

Points Required To Win A Set Changed To 25For each non-deciding set, a team that scores 25 points and has at least a two-point advantage of the opponent wins that set. If the score is tied at 24-24, play continues until one team has a lead of two points. In the fifth set, teams will still play to 15. (Rule 8.2.1, NCAA Volleyball Handbook)

CARSON, Calif- Kristy Sather and Kaylee Aizenstadt each had 11 kills and SSU hit .340 as a team in a 3-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday in Carson. The win leaves the Seawolves at 9-12, 5-7 CCAA while the Toros drop to 2-22, 1-12 CCAA.

Sonoma State started quickly and never looked back in game one, jumping out to a 10-5 lead on a kill by Kaylee Aizenstadt, and then extending its lead to double digits at 26-16 on a Marianne Fox service ace. SSU would win game one, 30-22.

Game two started off competitive with ties at 1-1, 8-8, 10-10 before the Toros took their first lead of the day at 11-10 on a kill by Lauren Wells. A Sarah Hillier kill re-knotted the game on the next play, after which Lindsay Brown stepped back and serviced nine-straight

points, with four coming via kills from Kristy Sather, to give SSU a 20-11 lead. The teams traded sideouts over the next few plays until Marianne Fox serviced the last five points of the game to put the Seawolves up two head-ing into intermission.

Things did not get any better for CSUDH in game three as SSU continued to capitalize on long serving runs by multiple players to quickly dispatch of the Toros and take the match. The Seawolves were led by Aizenstadt’s .647 hitting percentage and 11 kills, with no attacking er-rors on the day. Sather was also in double-fig-ures with 11 kills, while Lillian Harms and Taylor Manton did the job in the back row, picking up 13 and 11 digs, respectively.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Taylor Manton broke Sonoma State’s all-time digs record on Wednesday night in an absolute barn burner at Seawolf Gym. The Seawolves battled back from a two games to none deficit to beat Cal State Monterey Bay, 3-2. The Seawolves, win-ners of five of their last six, improve to 10-12, 6-7 CCAA. The Otters fall to 9-16, 6-7 CCAA.

Manton had 36 digs in the match, giving her 1,590 for her career. The previous record was held by Christine Shiba, who had 1,563 from 2000-2003. In addition to the career record, Manton set a new single-season record in the match. She now has 598 digs this season, surpassing Lillian Harms’ record of 571 set last year. Manton is currently 4th in the nation in assists.

Few would have given the Seawolves much of a chance after falling behind 2-0. CSUMB won game one 30-26, then held on for a 30-27 game two win.

The comeback started in game three when SSU edged the Otters 30-25 behind a .229 hit-ting performance. The Seawolves played their best volleyball of the night in game four, hit-ting at a .380 clip on their way to a 30-18 win.

The decisive game five had more than its share of drama. The Otters went up 8-6 before SSU put four straight on the board, taking the lead at 10-8. SSU pushed the score to 14-11, serv-ing match point. However, three quick points by the Otters drew things even again, at 14.

ARCATA, Calif- The Sonoma State volleyball team picked up their sixth win in their last seven matches with an exciting 3-2 win over Humboldt State on Friday evening in Arcata. The ‘Jacks fall to 8-14, 4-10 CCAA.

It was the second straight match for SSU in which they fell behind two games to none yet came back to win. The Seawolves pulled the feat on Wednesday at home against Cal State Monterey Bay.

HSU won the first two games by scores of 30-28 and 30-24 before the Seawolves got going. SSU squeaked out a 30-28 win in game three, then dominated in a 30-21 win in game four to set up a fifth and deciding frame.

The ‘Jacks led for much of the fifth game and were serving game point at 14-13 before a ser-vice error tied things up. HSU scored the next point and had another match point at 15-14, but a hitting error brought the Seawolves even once again.

After that, the Seawolves got kills from Sarah Hillier and Kristy Sather to put the match away.

LOS ANGELES, Calif- The Sonoma State vol-leyball team closed out the 2007 season on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 loss at the hands of Cal State L.A. at the Eagles Nest in Los Ange-les. The Seawolves finish the season at 13-14, 9-9 CCAA. In the loss, Lindsay Brown and Marianne Fox set school single-season records for assists and service aces, respectively.

The Golden Eagles took Saturday’s match by scores of 30-21, 30-26, 30-25.

The second half of the season was quite a turn around for Sonoma State. Heading in to this weekend, SSU had won six in a row and eight of their last nine games to rebound from a tough 5-11 start to the season. Unfortunately, the losses to UC San Diego on Friday and Cal State L.A. on Saturday ended their hopes of a post-season berth.

Kristy Sather led the Seawolves on Saturday with 15 kills. She finishes the season with 373 kills, the most by a Seawolf since 2002 and the seventh-best mark in school history.

Lindsay Brown led the team in assists in the season finale, as she did in every other match this year, finishing with 29. Her 1,140 assists for the season break the school record, set by Colleen Ferguson (1,116) in 1995.

Taylor Manton led on defense, finishing with 15 more digs to give her 712 for the season. She becomes the first SSU player to surpass the 700-dig plateau in a season (several weeks after becoming the first to reach 600).

Marianne Fox also broke the school’s all-time service ace record with her 53rd of the season. Just a freshman, Fox is also SSU’s all-time fresh-man kills leader with 304.

The California Collegiate Athletic Associa-tion (CCAA) has been one of the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938.

The 11-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Cal State Monterey Bay, Chico State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State, Humboldt State, and Sonoma State.

These institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s CCAA-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition.

CCAA members have won 146 NCAA Champion-ships (98 men, 48 women) which is far and away the most of any Division II conference.

The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 68 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University.
