Following two consecutive 23-win seasons and two appearances in the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship Tournament, expectations are high for the Sonoma State volleyball team. Head Coach Bear Grassl and his Seawolves, however, wouldn’t want it any other way.

The Seawolves finished fourth in the CCAA standings a year ago and were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA tournament after a heartbreaking five-set loss to Cal State L.A. It was the second straight 23-win season for Sonoma State, who finished 23-8 after starting the season with 11 consecutive victories. In 2008, SSU finished tied for second in the conference with a 23-7 record before falling in the opening round of the NCAA tournament to Chico State in three sets.

Entering his ninth season at the helm for Sonoma State, Grassl will return three start-ers, two of which were All-America selections last season. Juniors KealaPeterson and TaylorKrenwinkel had stellar seasons for the Seawolves in 2009, both breaking sophomore records at their respective positions.

Peterson, an outside hitter from Sebastopol who transferred from UC Davis before the start of the season, broke the class record for most kills by a sophomore with 401, topping a record previously held by Christina Shiba (346 in 2001). She led the team with 13 double-doubles and broke another school record for most kills in a three-set match with 25, set on Oct. 9, 2009 against Cal State East Bay. Peterson had a 4.18 kills per set mark last season as well, the 11th best in the nation.

Krenwinkel, a libero from San Diego, broke the sophomore record for most digs in a season with 539, besting the old mark of 479 set by former Seawolf Taylor Manton in 2005. She also eclipsed the 1,000 dig mark in her career with 1,062 becoming just the fourth SSU player to accomplish the feat. Krenwinkel currently has a streak of 39 con-secutive matches with 10 or more digs, dating back to the 2008 season. With 4.81 digs per set in 2009, she led the conference all season long in that category.

Completing one of the nation’s best one-two punches, sophomore AllySather will also return to the Sonoma State lineup in 2010. Sather shattered the previous fresh-man kill record last season with a team-best 442, topping the previous mark of 304 set by former Sonoma State student-athlete Marianne Fox in 2007. Peterson and Sather combined for 843 kills -- 56 percent of the team’s production in that department.

Perhaps the biggest loss in the lineup will be at the setting position in Lindsay Brown. Brown is at the top of several all-time statistical categories including assists (3,619) and service aces (147). She eclipsed the 1,000 assist mark in a season twice in her career, including last season with 1,108 and served up a team-high 45 aces.

Despite the loss of Brown, Ali Walker, and the dynamic blocking duo of Sarah Illing-worth and Rikki Buckshnis, Coach Grassl thinks he has brought in enough talent to continue competing at the highest level.

Two of the Seawolves’ highest profile recruits will come in together after a brilliant run at Petaluma High School. In HayleyRoss and KaitlynDunaway, Grassl has captured two of the Empire’s best senior players. It continues a popular trend of the best local players staying home and playing at Sonoma State. Another newcomer to the team will take the route of Keala Peterson, joining the squad after time at the NCAA Division I level. In fact, there is more in common than just that as junior Lindsay Lytle, a newcomer from Rhode Island, was actu-ally a teammate of Peterson’s at Sebastopol’s Analy High School.

While the Seawolves feel they have constructed an impressive roster, they know the CCAA will be as formidable as ever. Widely regarded as one of the best Division II volleyball conferences in the nation, 2010 should be no different as Cal State San Bernardino, UC San Diego, and Cal State L.A. have reloaded in hopes of capturing not just a conference crown, but a national trophy as well.

The Seawolves were picked fourth in the pre-season coaches poll, coming in just one spot behind perennial national powerhouse, Cal State L.A.. The high pre-season ranking shows that Sonoma has gained the respect of the coaches in the league and that they’ve climbed into the upper echelon.

Four-time defending conference champion and NCAA Division II semi-finalist Cal State San Bernardino received the maximum votes possible and was tabbed as the conference coaches’ pick to capture the CCAA title again this season. The Coyotes received 121 points and 11 first-place votes ahead of UC San Diego, who was picked to finish second, collecting 103 points and one first place vote. Cal State L.A. was third with 98 points, So-noma State grabbed 97 points and Chico State rounded out the top five with 82 points.

Cal Poly Pomona (63) was picked sixth and followed by San Francisco State (61), Cal State East Bay (55) and Cal State Monterey Bay (36). Humboldt State and Cal State Dominguez Hills tied for 10th with 23 points and Cal State Stanislaus was 12th after col-lecting 22 points.

The 2010 schedule will kickoff on Sept. 3 when Sonoma State hosts the annual Seawolf Spike, a two-day tournament featuring eight schools, four of which compete in the CCAA. The Seawolves will take on Dominican in their first match of the season at 1:30 p.m. at The Wolves’ Den. Conference play will begin on Sept. 10 when the Seawolves visit Cal State East Bay in Hayward at 7 p.m.

CCAA PREVIEW

Coaches Pick Coyotes To Take CCAAFour-time defending conference champion and NCAA Division II National semi-finalist Cal State San Bernardino received the maximum number of votes possible and was tabbed as the conference coaches’ pick to capture the 2010 California Collegiate Athletic Associa-tion (CCAA) title, it was announced on Monday.

The Coyotes, winners of four straight CCAA titles and seven overall since 2001, totaled 121 points and 11 first-place votes. UC San Diego, which placed second a year ago, fin-ished second in the poll after collecting 103 points and one first-place vote. Cal State L.A. was third with 98 points, Sonoma State was fourth after garnering 97 points and Chico State rounded out the top five with 82 points.

Cal State San Bernardino is coming off one of its finest seasons in program history after recording a 33-2 overall record and advancing to the NCAA National Semifinals where it lost in four sets to eventual national champion Concordia-St. Paul. It marked the second straight season that the Coyotes season ended at the hands of the Golden Bears.

Entering her 20th season at Cal State San Bernardino, head coach Kim Cherniss wel-comes back two first-team All-Americans in senior outside hitter Jane Chafeh and senior setter Sara Hoffman.

First-year UC San Diego head coach Ricci Luyties takes over the reigns for Tom Black, who took the head job at Loyola Marymount, and inherits a talented team that includes honorable mention All-American junior libero Roxanne Brunsting.

The 2010 campaign is slated to begin Thursday, September 2 when Cal State East Bay plays at Alaska Anchorage, and Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State L.A. open play in the CPP/CSULA Labor Day Tournament. CCAA play is slated to commence on Friday, Sep-tember 10 with a full schedule of contests.

Bear GrasslHead Coach

Head Coach Bear Grassl returns for his ninth year at the helm of the Sonoma State University volleyball program in 2010. The 2008 CCAA Coach of the Year, Grassl has led the Seawolves to two of the best sea-sons in school history in ‘08 and ‘09, putting forward a 46-15 record and back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament.

The 2009 Seawolves got out to the best start in pro-gram history, winning their first 11 matches on their way to a 23-8 overall record and their highest national

ranking ever. Led by a core group of local players and a roster that featured a pair of All-Americans, the Seawolves advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year, where they were upset by Cal State L.A..

The Seawolves burst on to the scene in 2008 when they won 14 of their first 15 matches. As the season went on, Sonoma State stayed close in the CCAA title race but went 9-5 the rest of the season and finished tied for second in the confer-ence (15-5). However, the Seawolves had a stellar home record, going 14-1 on the hardwood of the Seawolf Gym. Sonoma State also appeared in the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament for the first time since 1993 but a first-round loss to conference-foe Chico State knocked the Sea-wolves out of national title contention.

Grassl took the reigns in 2002 and led the Sea-wolves to a 15-14 record. He repeated the feat in

2003 (15-14) and then went 14-12 in ‘04. In 2005 and 2006, the Seawolves struggled in the win column playing in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Association with a young squad.

In eight seasons at Sonoma State, Grassl has coached three All-Americans and count-less All-Conference All-Region performers. He has also seen his players earn numerous Academic All-District honors in the past few seasons.

A 1991 graduate of Sonoma State, Grassl was head coach at El Molino High School from 1992-2001. During that span, he guided the Lions to six Sonoma County League championships, seven North Coast Section titles, five Northern California champion-ships and one California state championship, in 1999. His career coaching mark at El Molino was an impressive 267-78.

The CALIFORNIACOLLEGIATEATHLETICASSOCIATION(CCAA) has been one of the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938.

The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, Cal State L.A., Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State.

These institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s CCAA-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition.

CCAA members have won 149 NCAA Championships (101 men, 48 women) which is far and away the most of any Division II conference.

The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 68 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University.

The CCAA underwent a major transformation in 1998 when Sonoma State, along with current members Chico State, Cal State Stanislaus, and San Francisco State joined the conference. Recent additions include Cal State Monterey Bay (2004), Humboldt State (2006), and Cal State East Bay (2009).
