Seeing and acting with mercy: that is holiness.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God”

83. This Beatitude speaks of those whose hearts are simple, pure and undefiled, for a heart capable of love admits nothing that might harm, weaken or endanger that love. The Bible uses the heart to describe our real intentions, the things we truly seek and desire, apart from all appearances. “Man sees the appearance, but the Lord looks into the heart” (1Sam 16:7). God wants to speak to our hearts (cf. Hos 2:16); there he desires to write his law (cf. Jer 31:33). In a word, he wants to give us a new heart (cf. Ezek36:26).

84. “Guard your heart with all vigilance” (Prov 4:23). Nothing stained by falsehood has any real worth in the Lord’s eyes. He “flees from deceit, and rises and departs from foolish thoughts” (Wis 1:5). The Father, “who sees in secret” (Mt 6:6), recognizes what is impure and insincere, mere display or appearance, as does the Son, who knows “what is in man” (cf. Jn 2:25).

85. Certainly there can be no love without works of love, but this Beatitude reminds us that the Lord expects a commitment to our brothers and sisters that comes from the heart. For “if I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have no love, I gain nothing” (1 Cor 13:3). In Matthew’s Gospel too, we see that what proceeds from the heart is what defiles a person (cf. 15:18), for from the heart come murder, theft, false witness, and other evil deeds (cf. 15:19). From the heart’s intentions come the desires and the deepest decisions that determine our actions.

86. A heart that loves God and neighbour (cf. Mt 22:36-40), genuinely and not merely in words, is a pure heart; it can see God. In his hymn to charity, Saint Paul says that “now we see in a mirror, dimly” (1 Cor 13:12), but to the extent that truth and love prevail, we will then be able to see “face to face”. Jesus promises that those who are pure in heart “will see God”.

Keeping a heart free of all that tarnishes love: that is holiness.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God”

87. This Beatitude makes us think of the many endless situations of war in our world. Yet we ourselves are often a cause of conflict or at least of misunderstanding. For example, I may hear something about someone and I go off and repeat it. I may even embellish it the second time around and keep spreading it… And the more harm it does, the more satisfaction I seem to derive from it. The world of gossip, inhabited by negative and destructive people, does not bring peace. Such people are really the enemies of peace; in no way are they “blessed”.[73]

88. Peacemakers truly “make” peace; they build peace and friendship in society. To those who sow peace Jesus makes this magnificent promise: “They will be called children of God” (Mt 5:9). He told his disciples that, wherever they went, they were to say: “Peace to this house!” (Lk 10:5). The word of God exhorts every believer to work for peace, “along with all who call upon the Lord with a pure heart” (cf. 2 Tim 2:22), for “the harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace” (Jas 3:18). And if there are times in our community when we question what ought to be done, “let us pursue what makes for peace” (Rom 14:19), for unity is preferable to conflict.[74]

89. It is not easy to “make” this evangelical peace, which excludes no one but embraces even those who are a bit odd, troublesome or difficult, demanding, different, beaten down by life or simply uninterested. It is hard work; it calls for great openness of mind and heart, since it is not about creating “a consensus on paper or a transient peace for a contented minority”,[75] or a project “by a few for the few”.[76] Nor can it attempt to ignore or disregard conflict; instead, it must “face conflict head on, resolve it and make it a link in the chain of a new process”.[77] We need to be artisans of peace, for building peace is a craft that demands serenity creativity, sensitivity and skill.


Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist Though I thought I had toiled in vain, and for nothing, uselessly, spent my strength,

yet my reward is with the Lord.

The God Who Was Revealed in Christmas

Remember Christmas? It was God's answer to human longing, God's response to the centuries of prayers that lay hidden in our groaning, our sighs, our frustrations, and our religious efforts, each of them a plea, mostly silent, for a divine intervention, all of them asking God to come and rid the world of injustice and our hearts of loneliness and heartache.

Like a baby, God does not outgun anyone, out-muscle anyone, threaten anyone, or overpower anyone.

But God's answer didn't exactly meet our expectations even as it surpassed them. What was born with Jesus' birth and what still lay seemingly helpless in mangers all around the world wasn't exactly what the world expected. What the world expected was a superstar, someone with the talent, sharpness, and raw muscle-power to out-gun everything that's bad on this planet, someone charismatic enough to make everyone who opposes him slink away in defeat. God's answer to that: A baby lying helpless in the straw! Why? Why would God choose to be born into the world in this way? Because you can't argue with a baby! Babies don't try to compete, don't stand up to you, don't try to best you in an argument, and don't try to impress you with their answers. Indeed, they can't speak at all. You, on your part, have to coax everything out of them, be it a smile or a word, and that effort, which demands great patience, usually draws out what's best in you. Moreover, you can't push at a baby too hard, it will begin to cry and the session is over. And that is the Savior who was born in Bethlehem, and that is too how God is still basically in the world. Like a baby, God does not outgun anyone, out-muscle anyone, threaten anyone, or overpower anyone. The power of God revealed in Christmas is the power of a baby, nothing more, nothing less: innocence, gentleness, helplessness, a vulnerability that can soften hearts, invite in, have us hush our voices, teach us patience, and call forth what's best in us. We watch our language around a baby in the same way as we watch our language in a church, with good reason. The power of Christmas is like the power of a baby, was that it underwhelmed in such a way so as to eventually overwhelm. There is a greater power than muscle, speed, charism, unstoppable force: if you were to put a baby into a room with the heavy-weight boxing champion of the world, who ultimately would be the stronger? The boxer could kill the baby, but, no doubt, wouldn't, precisely because something inside the baby's powerlessness would overwhelm the boxer. Such is the way of God, the message of Christmas. But we have always been slow to understand this; we want our messiahs to possess more immediate power. And we are in good company here. The messiah that people longed for during all those centuries leading up to Jesus and Bethlehem was precisely conceived of as a human superhero, someone with the earthly muscle to bang heads together and purge the world of evil by morally superior muscles. Even John the Baptist expected the messiah to come with that kind of power. His concern was justice, repentance, asceticism. He warned people of an approaching time of reckoning and expected the longed-for messiah to come precisely as a violent fire, a winnowing fan that would separate the bad from the good and burn up the former with a righteousness that came straight from God. When he heard reports of Jesus gently inviting sinners in rather than casting them off, John was scandalized, that kind of a messiah didn't fit his expectations, or his preaching. That's why Jesus, in sending a response to him, invited John not to be scandalized in him. John hadn't wanted a gentle, vulnerable, peace-preaching messiah. He wanted bad people punished, not converted. But, to his credit, once he saw how Jesus' power worked, he understood, accepted a deeper truth, stepped back in self-effacement, and pointed people in Jesus' direction with the words: he must increase and I must decrease. I'm not even worthy to untie his scandal strap! We too are slow to understand. Like John the Baptist, our impatience for truth and justice makes us want and expect a messiah who comes in earthly terms, all talent and muscle, banging heads together so as to rid the planet of falsehood and evil. We want the kind of messiah we see at the end of every Hollywood thriller, Mother Theresa turned into Sylvester Stallone or Bruce Willis, beating up the bad guys with a violence they can only envy. But that's not the Christmas story, nor the power revealed in it. An infant lying in the straw in Bethlehem didn't outgun anyone. He just lay there, waiting for anyone, good or bad, to come to him, see his helplessness, feel a tug at his or her heart strings, and then gently try to coax a smile or a word out of him. Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, Apostles

On June 29 the Church celebrates the feast day of Sts. Peter & Paul. As early as the year 258, there is evidence of an already lengthy tradition of celebrating the solemnities of both Saint Peter and Saint Paul on the same day. Together, the two saints are the founders of the See of Rome, through their preaching, ministry and martyrdom there. Peter, who was named Simon, was a fisherman of Galilee and was introduced to the Lord Jesus by his brother Andrew, also a fisherman. Jesus gave him the name Cephas (Petrus in Latin), which means ‘Rock,’ because he was to become the rock upon which Christ would build His Church. Peter was a bold follower of the Lord. He was the first to recognize that Jesus was “the Messiah, the Son of the living God,” and eagerly pledged his fidelity until death. In his boldness, he also made many mistakes, however, such as losing faith when walking on water with Christ and betraying the Lord on the night of His passion. Yet despite his human weaknesses, Peter was chosen to shepherd God's flock. The Acts of the Apostles illustrates his role as head of the Church after the Resurrection and Ascension of Christ. Peter led the Apostles as the first Pope and ensured that the disciples kept the true faith. St. Peter spent his last years in Rome, leading the Church through persecution and eventually being martyred in the year 64. He was crucified upside-down at his own request, because he claimed he was not worthy to die as his Lord.

He was buried on Vatican hill, and St. Peter's Basilica is built over his tomb. St. Paul was the Apostle of the Gentiles. His letters are included in the writings of the New Testament, and through them we learn much about his life and the faith of the early Church. Before receiving the name Paul, he was Saul, a Jewish pharisee who zealously persecuted Christians in Jerusalem. Scripture records that Saul was present at the martyrdom of St. Stephen. Saul's conversion took place as he was on his way to Damascus to persecute the Christian community there. As he was traveling along the road, he was suddenly surrounded by a great light from heaven. He was blinded and fell off his horse. He then heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” He answered: “Who are you, Lord?” Christ said: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” Saul continued to Damascus, where he was baptized and his sight was restored. He took the name Paul and spent the remainder of his life preaching the Gospel tirelessly to the Gentiles of the Mediterranean world. Paul was imprisoned and taken to Rome, where he was beheaded in the year 67.

He is buried in Rome in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. In a sermon in the year 395, St. Augustine of Hippo said of Sts. Peter and Paul: “Both apostles share the same

Mirar y actuar con misericordia, esto es santidad.

Felices los de corazón limpio, porque ellos verán a Dios

83. Esta bienaventuranza se refiere a quienes tienen un corazón sencillo, puro, sin suciedad, porque un corazón que sabe amar no deja entrar en su vida algo que atente contra ese amor, algo que lo debilite o lo ponga en riesgo. En la Biblia, el corazón son nuestras intenciones verdaderas, lo que realmente buscamos y deseamos, más allá de lo que aparentamos: «El hombre mira las apariencias, pero el Señor mira el corazón» (1 S 16,7). Él busca hablarnos en el corazón (cf. Os 2,16) y allí desea escribir su Ley (cf. Jr 31,33). En definitiva, quiere darnos un corazón nuevo (cf. Ez 36,26).

84. Lo que más hay que cuidar es el corazón (cf. Pr 4,23). Nada manchado por la falsedad tiene un valor real para el Señor. Él «huye de la falsedad, se aleja de los pensamientos vacíos» (Sb 1,5). El Padre, que «ve en lo secreto» (Mt 6,6), reconoce lo que no es limpio, es decir, lo que no es sincero, sino solo cáscara y apariencia, así como el Hijo sabe también «lo que hay dentro de cada hombre» (Jn 2,25).

85. Es cierto que no hay amor sin obras de amor, pero esta bienaventuranza nos recuerda que el Señor espera una entrega al hermano que brote del corazón, ya que «si repartiera todos mis bienes entre los necesitados; si entregara mi cuerpo a las llamas, pero no tengo amor, de nada me serviría» (1 Co 13,3). En el evangelio de Mateo vemos también que lo que viene de dentro del corazón es lo que contamina al hombre (cf. 15,18), porque de allí proceden los asesinatos, el robo, los falsos testimonios, y demás cosas (cf. 15,19). En las intenciones del corazón se originan los deseos y las decisiones más profundas que realmente nos mueven.

86. Cuando el corazón ama a Dios y al prójimo (cf. Mt 22,36-40), cuando esa es su intención verdadera y no palabras vacías, entonces ese corazón es puro y puede ver a Dios. San Pablo, en medio de su himno a la caridad, recuerda que «ahora vemos como en un espejo, confusamente» (1 Co 13,12), pero en la medida que reine de verdad el amor, nos volveremos capaces de ver «cara a cara» (ibíd.). Jesús promete que los de corazón puro «verán a Dios».

Mantener el corazón limpio de todo lo que mancha el amor, esto es santidad.

Felices los que trabajan por la paz, porque ellos serán llamados hijos de Dios

87. Esta bienaventuranza nos hace pensar en las numerosas situaciones de guerra que se repiten. Para nosotros es muy común ser agentes de enfrentamientos o al menos de malentendidos. Por ejemplo, cuando escucho algo de alguien y voy a otro y se lo digo; e incluso hago una segunda versión un poco más amplia y la difundo. Y si logro hacer más daño, parece que me provoca mayor satisfacción. El mundo de las habladurías, hecho por gente que se dedica a criticar y a destruir, no construye la paz. Esa gente más bien es enemiga de la paz y de ningún modo bienaventurada[73].

88. Los pacíficos son fuente de paz, construyen paz y amistad social. A esos que se ocupan de sembrar paz en todas partes, Jesús les hace una promesa hermosa: «Ellos serán llamados hijos de Dios» (Mt 5,9). Él pedía a los discípulos que cuando llegaran a un hogar dijeran: «Paz a esta casa» (Lc 10,5). La Palabra de Dios exhorta a cada creyente para que busque la paz junto con todos (cf. 2 Tm 2,22), porque «el fruto de la justicia se siembra en la paz para quienes trabajan por la paz» (St 3,18). Y si en alguna ocasión en nuestra comunidad tenemos dudas acerca de lo que hay que hacer, «procuremos lo que favorece la paz» (Rm 14,19) porque la unidad es superior al conflicto[74].

89. No es fácil construir esta paz evangélica que no excluye a nadie sino que integra también a los que son algo extraños, a las personas difíciles y complicadas, a los que reclaman atención, a los que son diferentes, a quienes están muy golpeados por la vida, a los que tienen otros intereses. Es duro y requiere una gran amplitud de mente y de corazón, ya que no se trata de «un consenso de escritorio o una efímera paz para una minoría feliz»[75], ni de un proyecto «de unos pocos para unos pocos»[76]. Tampoco pretende ignorar o disimular los conflictos, sino «aceptar sufrir el conflicto, resolverlo y transformarlo en el eslabón de un nuevo proceso»[77]. Se trata de ser artesanos de la paz, porque construir la paz es un arte que requiere serenidad, creatividad, sensibilidad y destreza.

¡Maestro! ¿No te importa que nos estemos hundiendo?

Recibí hace unos meses el siguiente texto: “Un profesor universitario retó a sus alumnos con esta pregunta. ¿Dios creó todo lo que existe? Un estudiante contestó valiente: Sí, lo hizo. ¿Dios creó todo?, preguntó nuevamente el profesor. Sí señor, respondió el joven. El profesor contestó, “Si Dios creó todo, entonces Dios hizo al mal, pues el mal existe, y bajo el precepto de que nuestras obras son un reflejo de nosotros mismos, entonces Dios es malo.” El estudiante se quedó callado ante tal respuesta y el profesor, feliz, se jactaba de haber probado una vez más que la fe era un mito”.

Un simple rayo de luz rasga las tinieblas e ilumina la superficie donde termina el haz de luz.

Otro estudiante levantó su mano y dijo: ¿Puedo hacer una pregunta, profesor? Por supuesto, respondió el profesor. El joven se puso de pie y preguntó: ¿Profesor, existe el frío? ¿Qué pregunta es esa? Por supuesto que existe, ¿acaso usted no ha tenido frío? El muchacho respondió: De hecho, señor, el frío no existe. Según las leyes de la física, lo que consideramos frío, en realidad es la ausencia de calor. “Todo cuerpo u objeto es susceptible de estudio cuando tiene o transmite energía, el calor es lo que hace que dicho cuerpo tenga o transmita energía. El cero absoluto es la ausencia total y absoluta de calor, todos los cuerpos se vuelven inertes, incapaces de reaccionar, pero el frío no existe. Hemos creado ese término para describir cómo nos sentimos si no tenemos calor.” Y, ¿existe la oscuridad? Continuó el estudiante. El profesor respondió: Por supuesto. El estudiante contestó: Nuevamente se equivoca, señor, la oscuridad tampoco existe. La oscuridad es en realidad ausencia de luz. La luz se puede estudiar, la oscuridad no, incluso existe el prisma de Nichols para descomponer la luz blanca en los varios colores en que está compuesta, con sus diferentes longitudes de onda. La oscuridad no. Un simple rayo de luz rasga las tinieblas e ilumina la superficie donde termina el haz de luz. ¿Cómo puede saber cuan oscuro está un espacio determinado? Con base en la cantidad de luz presente en ese espacio, ¿no es así? Oscuridad es un término que el hombre ha desarrollado para describir lo que sucede cuando no hay luz presente. Finalmente, el joven preguntó al profesor: Señor, ¿existe el mal? El profesor respondió: Por supuesto que existe, como lo mencioné al principio, gracias a el vemos violaciones, crímenes y violencia en todo el mundo, esas cosas son del mal. A lo que el estudiante respondió: El mal no existe, señor, o al menos no existe por sí mismo. El mal es simplemente la ausencia de Dios, es, al igual que los casos anteriores un término que el hombre ha creado para describir esa ausencia de Dios. Dios no creó al mal. No es como la fe o el amor, que existen como existen el calor y la luz. El mal es el resultado de que la humanidad no tenga a Dios presente en sus corazones. Es como resulta el frío cuando no hay calor, o la oscuridad cuando no hay luz. Entonces el profesor, después de asentar con la cabeza, se quedó callado. El joven se llamaba Albert Einstein.” La pregunta por el mal está y estará presente frente a nuestra fe vacilante. Los discípulos, ante la tormenta que los amenaza, se acercan a Jesús que duerme en la parte de atrás de la barca, apoyado sobre una almohada y lo despiertan con esta pregunta: “¡Maestro! ¿No te importa que nos estemos hundiendo?” La respuesta de Jesús fue dar una orden al viento para que se calmara. Inmediatamente, confronta a sus discípulos y les pregunta: “¿Por qué tenían tanto miedo? ¿Todavía no tienen fe?.” Eso mismo sentimos que nos pregunta el Señor cuando nos sentimos atenazados por el mal. Pero éste no es más que ausencia de Dios y la mejor forma de atacarlo es dejándonos llenar por esa luz que no conoce ocaso y que nos calienta el corazón.

Recordemos algunos de los episodios Bíblicos en los que aparece Pedro. Después del milagro de la multiplicación de los panes, Jesús se retiró a la soledad de un cerro a orar, mientras sus discípulos cruzaban en una barca el lago de Galilea. De improviso vieron a Jesús caminando sobre el agua y según San Mateo Jesús les dijo: “¡Soy yo, no temáis!”. Pedro respondió: “Señor, si eres tú, ordena que yo vaya hasta ti sobre el agua.” Entonces Pedro empezó a caminar confiadamente pero al notar la fuerza del viento titubeó y comenzó a hundirse. Al momento, Jesús lo tomó de la mano y le dijo: “¡Que poca fe! ¿Por qué dudaste?” (Mateo 14:22-31) Pedro siempre figura entre los tres mas allegados a Jesús. Fue elegido con Santiago y Juan, para subir al monte Tabor donde ocurrió la Transfiguración. Aquí contempló la Gloria del Señor y escuchó la proclamación de Dios: “Este es mi Hijo amado, en quien me complazco, escuchadle.” (Mateo 17:1-5) Después bajaron a Jerusalén donde Jesús comenzó a preparar a sus discípulos para el fin de su ministerio en la tierra. Pedro llevó a Jesús aparte y comenzó a reprenderlo porque no quería aceptar un fin tan terrible como la cruz. Al estar todos reunidos en la Última Cena, Pedro declaró su última

lealtad y devoción con estas palabras: “Aunque todos pierdan su confianza, yo no.” E insistió: “Me quedaré contigo aunque tenga que dar la vida.”. Con inmensa tristeza Jesús le contestó: “Te aseguro que esta misma noche, antes que cante el gallo por segunda vez, me negarás tres veces.” Al desenvolverse esta trágica noche se realizó esta profecía. Cuando los soldados llevaron a Jesús a los judíos, Pedro se quedó en el patio y tres veces lo acusaron de ser discípulo de Jesús. El lo negó las tres veces. En aquel mismo momento, cantó el gallo por segunda vez y Pedro empezó a llorar.

Pablo lo sufrió todo por amor a Cristo

Qué es el hombre, cuán grande su nobleza y cuánta su capacidad de virtud lo podemos colegir sobre todo de la persona de Pablo. Cada día se levantaba con una mayor elevación y fervor de espíritu y, frente a los peligros que lo acechaban, era cada vez mayor su empuje, como lo atestiguan sus propias palabras: Olvidándome de lo que queda atrás y lanzándome hacia lo que está por delante; y, al presentir la inminencia de su muerte, invitaba a los demás a compartir su gozo, diciendo: Estad alegres y asociaos a mi alegría; y, al pensar en sus peligros y oprobios, se alegra también dice, escribiendo a los corintios: Vivo contento en

medio de mis debilidades, de los insultos y de las persecuciones; incluso llama a estas cosas armas de justicia, significando con ello que le sirven de gran provecho. Y así, en medio de las asechanzas de sus enemigos, habla en tono triunfal de las victorias alcanzadas sobre los ataques de sus perseguidores y, habiendo sufrido en todas partes azotes, injurias y maldiciones, como quien vuelve victorioso de la batalla, colmado de trofeos, da gracias a Dios, diciendo: Doy gracias a Dios, que siempre nos asocia a la victoria de Cristo. Imbuido de estos sentimientos, se lanzaba a las contradicciones e injurias, que le acarreaba su predicación, con un ardor superior al que nosotros empleamos en la consecución de los honores, deseando la muerte más que nosotros deseamos la vida, la pobreza más que nosotros la riqueza, y el trabajo mucho que muchos otros apetecen el descanso que lo sigue. La única cosa que él temía era ofender a Dios; lo demás le tenía sin cuidado. Por esto mismo, lo único que deseaba era agradar siempre a Dios.
