This manual is a step by step guide for common features of the Niko Home Control II programming software.  The programming software design and logic have been made even more clear and user friendly. From now on, both the installer and the end user will use the same tool: the installer to program the installation and the end user to make changes. You use the same programming software for an installation with a connected controller or wireless smart hub. This way, we offer smarter solutions that require less programming.

2 A few conceptsThis topic describes a few important concepts in the Niko Home Control programming software II version 2.x.

    2.1 ContentsIn this section:

2.2 Connected controller / Wireless smart hubThe table below shows the difference between an installation with a connected controller and a wireless smart hub.

Installation with Connected controller for Niko Home Control II

Wireless smart hub for Niko Home Control

    What?

Type of wiring Bus wiring Traditional wiring (230V)

Suitable for Installation in new builds and in major renovations

Installation in existing buildings and in smaller renovations

Communication The installed bus controls communicate over the bus wiring with the connected controller for Niko Home Control II in the cabinet.

The connected controls communicate wirelessly with the wireless smart hub for Niko Home Control II.

2.3 Role of the end userThe role of the end user in a Niko Home Control installation is steadily increasing. End users want more control over and flexibility in the installation.

This is taking the pressure off installers, reducing the installation time and the number of interventions after delivery. The installer delivers a working installation with basic functionality. The end user personalises and fine- tunes the installation, taking care of the rest of the programming themselves.

    A few examples:

The installer fits a Digital black. The end user personalises the button themselves using the Niko Home Control app on a smartphone or tablet. The end user links products from partners to their Niko Home Control installation themselves via their personal Niko Home Control page1 and the applicable partner brand's portal site. The installer fits Niko Home Control with a smart hub. The installation functions like a classical installation without any programming work by the installer. The end user can connect the installation to their network and configure it themselves. They can do this using the Niko Home

    ••

When you create a new project(see page 53) in the Niko Home Control II programming software version 2.x, you must choose the installation type:

Connected controllerWireless smart hub for Niko Home Control.

This choice determines which menus, players and (basic or advanced) actions are available in the programming software. You can change your choice later on, but then the entire project will be erased. In the future, both installation types will converge and be able to be used together.

Control app on any smartphone or tablet with active Wi-Fi or with the Niko Home Control II programming software version 2.x.For project construction, the installers deliver a working installation with traditional wiring (stand- alone mode(see page 16)). The end user can fine-tune their own installation.

2.4 ModesA Niko Home Control installation with a wireless smart hub can operate in 3 modes. These modes are determined by the availability of the wireless smart hub and the programming of the connected devices.

Mode Stand-alone mode Connected mode Fallback mode

Conditions There is no wireless smart hub configured.

There is a wireless smart hub configured. The wireless smart hub is reachable by the connected players. The connected players are programmed.

There is a wireless smart hub configured. The wireless smart hub is not reachable by the connected players (out of range, unpowered). The connected players are programmed.

Behaviour The devices will work according to traditional behaviour.

The connected players will work according to their programmed behaviour.

The connected players will fall back to their traditional behaviour.

E.g. The connected single switch switches a lamp on or off.

The connected single switch is programmed as a Standard 'all-off' button. All players within this Standard 'all-off' action will be switched off when the button is pressed.

This connected single switch may well be programmed as a Standard 'all-off' button, but will only switch off a lamp.

    2.5 Integration with partners

2.5.1 Aim of integrationA range of technologies are present in a modern home. These include heating, cooling, ventilation, sun blinds, etc. You yourself are a user of technologies such as your smartphone, multi-room audio, voice control, etc.

Bring all these technologies together and let them communicate with your smart electrical installation to enhance your own comfort, safety and energy-efficiency.

2.5.2 Types of integrationsThe table below shows the 3 possible integrations.

2.10.1 What is a room? You can see a room as a container which comprises all players within that room on the floor plan.

All players that are placed outside the floor plan are put in the room 'Home'.

    You draw rooms:

on top of the different areas of the imported floor plan, ordirectly onto the canvas if you do not have a floor plan.

    ••

2.10.2 Advantages of working with roomsWorking with rooms has the following advantages:

When you move a room on the drawing area, you move all players in that room with it.When you place players in a room on the drawing area, they are automatically added to the room on the touchscreen and in the app. The original name of the player is maintained. When you create a basic action for certain players, this action is automatically assigned to the room where the first output player is located. When you create a new player, this player is automatically added to the last room selected. The icon and name chosen are used on the touchscreen and in the app. The same icon will be used for the same room everywhere. This increases the ease of use on the various devices.

2.10.3 Use of rooms on the touchscreenBy default, the rooms appear on the touchscreen in the order in which they were created.

In the Dashboard > Touchscreen profiles > Organise and edit  menu you can set for each touchscreen profile(see page 62) which rooms and actions must be visible on this touchscreen and in what order.

When you add a player to the drawing area, choose the room first and then add the player. This way, the player will immediately be in the right room.

    ••

2.11.1 What is a basic action? The majority of actions in an installation are simple, e.g. using a control to switch one or more lamps on or off, or controlling a roller shutter with a roller shutter button. We call these actions basic actions.

You can easily create them in a few mouse clicks.

Some basic actions comprise handy parameters, e.g. you can make the light switch off after a certain period of time.

The behaviour of a basic action is pre-defined.

Please also read 'What is a basic action?8'.

    Examples:

a dimmer and a button will follow the pre-defined dimmer behavioura roller shutter and a button will follow the pre-defined roller shutter behaviour

2.11.2 What is an advanced action? An advanced action is a more complex action where a wizard facilitates the process of setting the behaviour and parameters by guiding you through the different steps.

Advanced actions represent the power of Niko Home Control II and offer you the possibility to add value in an easy way. Please also read 'What is an advanced action?'(see page 139).

    Examples:

    presence simulation

    Example:

Closing the roller shutters when it is dark and the advanced action all off has been activated.

The figure below shows the difference between a basic action, an advanced action and a conditional action.

2.12.1 Measure energyYou can measure energy in Niko Home Control in two ways. Using measuring modules in the electrical cabinet or using a connected switching socket outlet:
