SOFTSTARTRV Installation
Coleman Mach Versions: 1, 3, 3+, 10, 15
Coleman Mach Factory Air Conditioner Diagram May Be Designed
In Four Different Ways
• The dotted outlined box on the left shows a PTCR and start capacitor.
• The right dotted outlined box shows a start relay design.
• The dotted parts inside each block show that those pieces may or may not be installed in either design.
• There could be 2 or 3 capacitors within the electric box.
SoftStartRV Integrates into Coleman Mach 1, 3, 3+, 10, 15 Wiring Diagram
• 5 Color-Coded SoftStartRV Wires
• Look at the right dotted block which shows a start relay design.
• SoftStartRV installs the same way irrespective of the configuration used in your air conditioner.
• Follow the steps in this guide to correctly install SoftStartRV
Open The Air Conditioner Cover
All installation is done inside the cover of the air conditioner on top of the RV.
• NOTE 1 The first step is to turn off power to the RV.
• NOTE 2 The cover is held in place with four screws, two on each end.
• Remove the four screws and remove the cover. Place the cover and screws out of the way so you can safely work on the air conditioner.
1. Install SOFTSTARTRV -Here the RED arrow points to 3 different locations.
2. 5 wires must be pointing down or mounted parallel to the air condition cabinet bottom.
4. YELLOW arrow points to the cover of the electric box. Unscrew cover for access.
Installing the SoftStartRV unit: Clean the surface of the mounting location and the bottom of the enclosure.
Peel tape seal on the back of the unit on the unit and mount the box.
Screws are provided to better secure unit.
Never mount the SoftStartRV in the hot air exhaust from the condenser fan.
Mounting Locations & Electric Panel
Always install SoftStartRV with the wire exit pointing down or parallel to the ground.
Never install SoftStartRV with the wire exit pointing up, as it may collect moisture.
Never mount the SoftStartRV in the hot air exhaust from the condenser fan.
Example Mounting Location For SoftStartRV
• The compressor is shown with red arrow in photo.
• The RED arrow points to the cap over the compressor wiring.
• Do not remove this cap for installation.
• Follow the 3 red, black, and white wires from the Compressor cap to the electric box.
• The wires go through to the electrical box. See YELLOW arrow
Locating The Compressor & 3 Compressor Wires To Electrical Box
SoftStartRV- Routing 5 Wires• Remove the putty from
hole access to the electrical box wire see RED arrow
• Push the 5 SoftStartRV wires through the hole. See YELLOW arrow
• Replace the putty. by molding it around the wires. See RED arrow
• Use the wire zip ties provided to make sure the wires are neat. See YELLOW arrow.

Making The Connections
Recommend you use only end splice connectors for connecting one wire to another
Due to vibration, wire nuts can come off
Use connectors in the install kit provided. Don’t use automotive connectors because they’re are not rated for line voltage.
RED X’s indicate components THAT MUST BE DISCONNECTED & OR REMOVED
NOTE 1 The RED X’s indicate components THAT MUST BE DISCONNECTED & OR REMOVED during installation of SoftStartRV.
NOTE 2 The RED X connection wire must be disconnected and or removed from the C terminal of the Run Capacitor (RUN CAP) See RED arrow points to Run Capacitor
• All air conditioners use a split style run capacitor as shown in the picture.
• Terminal identifiers are usually stamped into the top of the capacitor.
• The “C” terminal or common terminal has several white wires plugged into it. BLUE arrow
• The HERM terminal has one or more red wires connected. RED arrow
• Although not visible, the FAN terminal is also labeled and has a single wire connected
Identifying Run Capacitor Terminals
STEP 1 Locate the WHITE compressor wire on the compressor terminal labeled R see RED arrow
This white wire connects to the C terminal on the Run Capacitor see YELLOW arrow
Note: Some air conditioners have several white wires on the Run Capacitor terminals.
Be sure to follow the white wire from the compressor completely back to the run capacitor
Locate The WHITE Compressor Wire & Follow it to the Run Capacitor Inside Electrical Box
Follow White Compressor Wire To Run Capacitor Terminal C
STEP 1, contd. Follow the white wire from the compressor into the electric box to the top of the run capacitor as indicated by the RED arrow.
STEP 2 Disconnect the white wire from Run Capacitor and Cut off the connector on the end.
End Splice White Compressor Wire To SoftStartRV Blue Wire
STEP 3
Take white compressor & blue SoftStartRV wire see RED arrow
Strip about ½ inch of insulation from the white wire and strip ½” of insulation from the BLUE wire from SoftStartRV.
STEP 3 Twist both wires together and crimp them with an end splice connector see YELLOW arrow
.
End Splice White Compressor Wire To SoftStartRV Blue Wire
STEP 3 contd.
Twist both wires together and crimp them with an end splice connector
This white wire from the compressor was removed from the C terminal of the run capacitor
Connect the white wire to the BLUE wire from the SoftStartRV
SEE RED arrow
Step #3 & #4 Connections Are On The Run Capacitor
STEP 3 contd.Remove white wire from C terminal See YELLOW arrow
Connect the BLUE SOFTSTARTRV wire to the white compressor wire that was removed from the C terminal of the run cap.
STEP 4 Connect the BLACK wire from the SoftStartRV to the C terminal of the Run Capacitor.
See GREEN arrow
RECAP & OVERVIEW Of The SoftStartRV 5 Wire Connections
STEP 1-Connect the BLACK wire from the SoftStartRV to the RUN CAPACITOR See GREEN arrow
STEP 2-Disconnect the WHITE wire from the RUN CAPACITOR See RED arrow
STEP 3- Connect the BLUE wire from the SoftStartRV (using a splice) to the WHITE WIRE from the “R” Terminal of the COMPRESSOR. See YELLOW arrow
STEP 4 - Connect the YELLOW wire from the SoftStartRV to the HERM of the RUN CAPACITOR See PURPLE arrow
RECAP & OVERVIEW Of The SoftStartRV 5 Wire Connections
STEP 5 Connect the RED wire to L3See GREEN arrow
STEP 6 Connect the BROWN wire to the OL (overload) terminal of the Compressor “C”See YELLOW arrow
STEP 7 Disconnect ALL wires to the START CAPACITOR and PTCR.See RED arrows
Check all connections and turn on the power.
Start the Fan first, then the A/C.
.
SOFTSTARTRV BLACK WIRE
Place a female quick-connect terminal on the BLACK wire from SoftStartRV and crimp tightly.
Connect the BLACK wire from SoftStartRV to the run capacitor on the same terminal group as the other white wires on the “C” terminal.
SEE RED ARROW

Close The Air Conditioner Cover
• Replace the four screws, two on each end
• Turn ON the power to the RV
• Turn the breaker for the A/C back on
• Set the thermostat set point to below ambient temperature
• Turn on the fan to low setting
• Turn ON Cooling
